The 401(k) Option You Should Never Take
By Chris Hogan
There’s a trend among 401(k) participants that keeps me up at night. I hesitate to mention it because if you don’t know about it, that’s one less person who’s losing money. Chances are you’ve heard about it, though. It’s the 401(k) loan. There. I said it. You know about it. Now, let me tell you why it’s such a bad idea. In theory, taking out money from your 401(k) sounds like a great option. Rather than the hassle of going through a bank, you can take money from your investment account as a short-term loan. The interest you pay on that loan goes back into your investment account, so you’re not really losing any money, right? Wrong. And I can prove it. Let’s say you take out $25,000 from your 401(k) for a down payment on a house. After all, you’d rather pay interest to yourself than the bank. You have five years to pay off that $25,000 — $5,000 a year plus interest — so you’d pay $425 a month (or more).
And the story doesn’t end there. You’ll spend the next five years digging yourself out of that hole to get back to your original 401(k) balance — instead of using that time to increase it even more. Let’s say your original 401(k) balance was $50,000. If you take out that loan, you’ll spend five years getting that 401(k) fund back to its original amount. However, if you spent those years adding $425 a month to that $50,000, you’d be nearing $115,000 in the end. Which balance would you rather have after five years — $50,000 or $115,000? I thought so. In my years as a financial coach, I’ve talked to thousands of people about their money. The biggest problem I see is debt. Whether it’s student loans, credit cards, or a 401(k) loan (which is debt, people!), being in the red keeps people from reaching their financial goals. And the only way to stem the tide of debt that has flooded our nation is to change the cultural and individual mind-set surrounding finances. Americans need to understand that a 401(k) loan isn’t the solution to their financial woes. That only puts a person deeper into the quicksand of debt. It’s time that we as a people (and our government) decide to take fiscal responsibility. It’s time that we stop blaming everyone else for our financial struggles, roll up our sleeves, and get to work to change our situation. What does that mean? We need a good dose of our grandparents’ approach to money. They lived on less than they earned. They didn’t take out loans every time they wanted to make a large purchase. They saved up the money until they had enough to buy it — whether it was a car or a washing machine. They understood the value of hard work and took on extra jobs when finances got tight. And they definitely didn’t buy things they didn’t need to impress the neighbors. That’s a relatively new phenomenon—and a dangerous mind-set to have. The total household debt in the United States is roughly $12.8 trillion. Of that, credit card debt accounts for $1 trillion. How can we as a nation expect to prosper if we live beyond our means and hope that someday we’ll magically turn our finances around?
“
In theory, taking out money from your 401(k) sounds like a great option. Rather than the hassle of going through a bank, you can take money from your investment account as a short-term loan. The interest you pay on that loan goes back into your investment account, so you’re not really losing any money, right? Wrong. And I can prove it.
“
What would happen if you left that $25,000 alone for five years instead of using it for the house? Your balance would be $40,000 and change, assuming a 10 percent rate of return. By taking it out, though, you lost $15,000. That’s $15,000 you can never get back because the growth was due to compound interest.
I understand that life happens and some problems cost money to fix. But rather than getting a 401(k) loan to pay for life’s mishaps, why not prepare in advance and put money aside? Then, when Murphy’s Law comes knocking, you already have the money to make it go away. I’d rather be prepared for a crisis than spend time and energy scrambling to fix it. The 401(k) loan is simply a symptom of a much larger cultural problem. But change has to start somewhere. And one place to draw a line in the sand is by deciding that the 401(k) loan is off the table. It’s not an option. Period. Not only does it keep people in debt, but it also robs them of money they could be earning in their investments if they hadn’t taken out the money in the first place.
OCTOBER 12, 2018 no one comes out ahead in that equation! 20And

four tips Graduation season is here. Are you one of those grads who will be celebrating the completion of your degree while simultaneously dreading the inevitable question "What are you doing after graduation?" Do you feel overwhelmed and confused about how to move forward in the work world? Too often, when job seekers look online or ask career professionals for help in clarifying their professional goals, they are given generic assessment tests or referred to job market data or job sites-none of which are that helpful in figuring out what's a good fit for YOU. Here's a different approach--one that begins by tuning in to who you are. If you're willing to put in a bit of reflection time, you will discover that you already know a lot about the qualities you want in your career and in your life. Here are four ways to get started:
Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/expert/Tracy_Fitzpatrick/898759
#1. Observe your aliveness each day. Make notes about what brings you alive even just a little bit. "Aliveness" is your sense of engagement and interest. What piques your curiosity? What draws your attention over the course of each day? What gives you even a small boost of energy because it's fun or interesting? Often, small things in life bring us alive, yet they can easily be ignored if we don't pay attention. Perhaps there's an interesting blog post we read all the way through, a conversation that engages us, a TV show that brings us to tears, an invigorating walk or a calming yoga class. Once you notice what taps your vitality, ask what about this experience has brought you alive and caught your interest. Maybe it is the activity itself--for example, you love to read, be physically active or talk one-onone with other people. Maybe it's the topic-you will watch anything about film making or world history, for instance. Perhaps it's the setting-those quiet times sitting in a café are perfect for you or the people--you get charged by your friend's sense of humor or your teacher's thoughtful questioning. When you imagine your future career, which fields or jobs spark your curiosity and make you want to know more? Look carefully at these day-to-day experiences and after a few days or weeks, you will start noticing patterns. One person is by her 12, creativity--the art project or OCTOBER 2018 22fueled

the new recipe. Another enjoys connecting with others in meaningful conversations. Another finds a sense of belonging as a member of a sports team or the school newspaper. Note to self: these are the activities, processes, environments or topics that engage you! #2. You can reflect about past experiences of aliveness as well. Often, peak moments in your life say a lot about what you really value. Close your eyes and imagine times when life was especially sweet and rewarding. Re-enter those memories with all your senses. Then jot down some notes about what made these experiences so fulfilling. #3. You also want to reflect on your strengths. Make a list of six to eight accomplishments, big or small and in any arena. Ask yourself what it took from you to accomplish each of these. List the skills, character traits and areas of knowledge and experience you tapped in to in order to achieve this result. Dig deeper to go beyond the generalities. For example, if you list "study skills," elaborate on that more. Maybe your study skills include memorization, project planning, synthesizing material or good writing. Go beyond "I'm good with people;" instead, describe how you listen, reflect back what you hear, provide validation and appreciation or empathize. Look back over this list and see which strengths appear multiple times. Do you enjoy using these capacities of yours? There is magic in identifying a strength that you really enjoy using. #4. Finally, reflect on what you yearn for. As you approach graduation, you may be grieving aspects of college or graduate school that have meant the most to you. Does that tell you something about what you yearn for in this next phase of life? Those yearnings can be painful but also full of information about what you wish for. Perhaps you are yearning for more travel like you enjoyed during a semester abroad or for the sense of community you have had in your sorority or on student council. These exercises require that you take some quiet moments to ponder, a practice that goes against the cultural norms of constant doing and always being connected to technology. If you buck that norm for a few moments each day and take time for deliberate reflection, useful discoveries about yourself will emerge in just a few weeks.
A cautionary note: Don't be shocked if you notice a lot of fear and self-doubt when you tune in to yourself. We all have those negative voices constantly yakking in our minds, and that anxious, insecure chatter usually gets louder when we face a big transition. These Inner Critics or Gremlins, as coaches like to call them, can undermine anyone's hopefulness and confidence and thus must be managed if a person is to come across as a capable, secure job applicant. Remember: don't believe everything you think. Usually those negative thoughts grab on to a tiny grain of truth and inflate it until we feel inadequate and worthless, which, of course, we are not. So be discerning by asking yourself what the grain of truth is and what is not true about those critical thoughts. Put the positive insights about yourself together and you have a lot more information about the qualities you seek at work and in life-your values, interests, strengths and wishes. The next step is to follow your curiosity and gather information about those jobs and fields of interest. You will do research and talk to professional contacts. As you proceed, use the tuning-in tools you have become good at to choose a more specific path that could lead to those qualities and then develop a step-by-step plan for getting there. Your goal: to land a job that you believe is a stepping stone to your dream career. Your first job out of school is not likely to fulfill your every dream, but if it puts you on the road to enhancing relevant skills and getting good experience, then you are on your way! Even if you change direction-which, of course many 20-somethings do-as you learn more about yourself and the professional world, you now know how to steer using your own internal compass. Congratulations! Tracy Fitzpatrick is a career and life coach with 15 years' experience, three certifications in coaching and three in personal branding. To learn more, visit http://www.tracyfitzpatrick.com. Each June and January, Tracy offers a live webinar series for soon-to-be and recent college grads and other 20-somethings called Career FIT.

Q: Hello, I have a family member who is an extreme introvert, has problems making friends or having conversations with strangers, doesn’t go out, and can’t fi nd a job even though they have interviewed a few times, I don’t know if it’s because they don’t have a personality or they are just overly shy. They have been looking for a job, and I’ve suggested something where they can work from home and won’t have to deal with people face-to-face. I just don’t understand why they can’t buckle up and deal with people. I’ve even asked if they need therapy or something, but their mom gets mad when I ask and tells me to leave it alone. Ok it makes me mad. I know they are not going to reach out and look for help. I would like to ask you though what kind of jobs, if any, are there that an introvert can do? It just gets to me that it can be so hard for somebody to fi nd a job because they can’t even look people in the eyes. Thank you.
Paid Training & Paid weekly Health, Dental & Vision Insurance Vacation Pay, Sick Pay & 401k
-Houston, Texas Reader A: I think it’s great that you want to help. The problem with giving good advice is that many times people don’t want to change and won’t take ANYONE’S advice. In particular, they won’t take advice from a close friend or relative. People who are less likely to like a lot of attention and interaction are frequently afraid that they are being watched and judged – that’s what an interview is! They can’t just “buckle down,” but there are jobs for every personality A work from home job where you handle customer service or telesales still requires you to interview and be outgoing on the phone. Many work from home jobs are scams. They would have to do some deep research to make sure that the company does not have a bad reputation and is not a fraud. (JobSparx only accepts advertising for real jobs.) Here are a few fi elds that work for introverted people: programming, data mining, truck driver, plumber, artist/crafts person, laboratory assistant, photographer, forester, conservation scientist, author, some graphic designers, etc. You can see that there are a lot of options, and many of them require an artistic talent and further education. They need to fi nd something they love doing and they will get a job. They need to research this further because it’s their life and their decision. Q: I’m a very outgoing person, and sometimes I put my foot in my mouth. I tend to just blurt out comments instead of thinking fi rst. My mother is always telling me to think before I talk. When I’m in an interview, I always answer more than I’m asked. I was asked why I left my last company and told them the whole truth about the boss, and how uncomfortable he made me with remarks and the way he was always touching me. I haven’t heard back from the company, and I assume I blew it. How can I stop doing this?

A: At the risk of sounding like your mother; think before you speak. A good way to do this is to repeat the question that you were asked to make sure that you understand it. That gives you time to think about your answer. On the other hand, you can’t know if your comments about your former boss “blew” the interview. Perhaps they chose someone with more experience.
Minimum of 2 years experience CNA is preferred but experienced caregivers will be considered

Before we dive right in, let me just congratulate you on earning your MBA degree. I know that it took a large effort on your part, possibly a sacrifice on many levels, and was also stressful, fun, exhausting, and fulfilling. Well done! Graduation itself was probably a mix of happiness, relief, and even a little sadness because you were saying goodbye to some good friends. Maybe there was also something else. You knew that many of your classmates had full-time job offers waiting for them in a few weeks or months, while you had/have nothing lined up. This article is for you. I am reaching out to you because I was you six years ago. I graduated from Kenan-Flagler Business School (UNC) with an MBA in marketing and had no job waiting for me after graduation. I was a career switcher (Wall St. to Marketing) and despite many parallels between the two career paths, many recruiters and companies were not seeing the connection and instead were only seeing limited marketing experience on my rĂŠsumĂŠ. Any of this sound familiar? Also, I know the income is needed. You have expenses, possibly including new student loans. I get it. I moved back home after graduation. I certainly don't have advice for every specific situation but what I do know is that you cannot get down on yourself or let negative thoughts creep in and impact your next move. You have a lot of value to add to an organization and now you need to regroup and find a way in. Keep in mind that this may take several months or longer, however if you remain persistent and focused, you will overcome this minor setback. Allow me to offer some advice based on either my personal experience or what I learned in hindsight. I hope they are a help to you.
1. DON'T COMPARE YOURSELF TO YOUR CLASSMATES
46
OCTOBER 12, 2018
You don't know what you don't know. Everyone is in a different situation. For example, some of your classmates got their dream offer, some possibly took an offer and now have a hint of regret, some maybe took the first or only offer presented to them, while others are returning to the companies that they worked at before VOL. 23 ISSUE 1162 business school
because they have to. You don't know everyone's story and it doesn't matter. Your classmates are starting their new journeys and so are you. Wish them well and focus on your next steps.
2. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF
· Exercise at least several times a week · Eat well · Get enough sleep · Get outside · Laugh. Read funny books; watch comedies or stand-up comedy Looking for a new job is stressful and is even more difficult if you're sick. Stay healthy.
3. GET TOGETHER WITH PEOPLE
Reach out to friends, former co-workers, or classmates for coffee or lunch. It's great just to catch up and have a good conversation. Whether they can help you directly is not the point. Meeting with them will very likely give you a boost and make you both feel good.
4. ATTEND NETWORKING EVENTS
Sites like meetup.com and alumni events are a great place to make a new contact or two. You never know where one meeting could lead.
5. ADD VARIETY TO YOUR DAY
Do not spend 8 hours a day just job searching. You'll get burned out. Mix it up to stay motivated... and sane. Take time each day to read the newspaper, different magazines, online articles, books on people or topics that you are interested in. You can get all of this information for free at your public library. It's a great resource. Take advantage of it. Additionally, while I know you just finished 2+ years of classes, there are also tons of online courses available if you want to learn or become more familiar with certain topics.
6. THINK OF WHERE YOU WANT TO GO IN THE LONGER TERM
There's a very good chance that you have an idea of where you want your career to go over the next 5 years or so. Keep that perspective handy and realize that your first job will be a stepping stone to the next opportunity all leading to whatever your larger goal is. Landing a job is not the end game. It's a chapter in your larger book.
7. SET PARAMETERS FOR YOUR JOB SEARCH... BUT BE OPEN TOO
You'll regret taking just any job or the wrong job and you don't want to be in that situation. Focus on where you want to work. VOL. 23 ISSUE 1162
Consider the commute, the hours you're willing to work, what type of organization, what size organization, etc. If an opportunity comes up where you possibly need to make concessions, then you can make them at that time. Additionally, you may have an opportunity that looks interesting but isn't necessarily what you are focusing on. At a minimum, be open to it and assess whether it will help you move toward your professional goals.
8. DO NOT ENDLESSLY APPLY TO COMPANIES THROUGH THEIR ONLINE PORTALS
I made this mistake. Who knows how many hours I wasted filling out and submitting my résumé, cover letter, and other information only to never get a response. Send your résumé and a letter directly to a company that you're interested in via USPS (not email) whether they have a job posted or not. Use LinkedIn to research and send your information to whomever would be potentially looking to hire in the department that you're interested in. Let THAT person then reach out to HR.
8A. YOU NEED ONE GOOD FIT, NOT 100
Don't wait to hear back from companies; keep moving forward. I don't know when many companies started thinking that it's acceptable not to communicate back to candidates, especially after you take the time to interview with them, but it happens far too often and there is one good way to deal with it: Acknowledge that it's the company's loss, not yours, and move on.
9. KEEP PRACTICING YOUR INTERVIEWING SKILLS
It's possible that you'll have gaps of time in between interviews. Make the effort to consistently rehearse answers to common interview questions to stay sharp. You can practice with friends or even by yourself out loud. If you're working with a recruiter, ask him or her to ask you some quick questions so you can answer and get immediate feedback. This will also help take some of the pressure off of you when the next interview comes around... which it will.
10. CONSIDER OTHER APPROACHES This was the turning point for me.
After months of submitting applications to those online portals, I realized that one of the companies that I was interested in kept posting the same jobs over and over on their website. I decided to reach out to the UNC Career Management Center in February of 2012 to ask for an alum who worked at the company. I figured I might as well just get in
touch with someone AT the company instead of hoping a computer liked my résumé. I received the information, reached out right away, and explained my situation to the alum, who was sympathetic. While we were talking, I said to him that I would even consider an internship because in my mind I knew two things: 1) UNC had a strong connection with the company and their summer internship program and 2) I could not hear that I did not have 'enough experience' for a full-time job one more time. I figured the internship would be a no-brainer for them and a decent back up plan for me. Long story short, they wound up offering me the summer internship in April of 2012 which I accepted. That's right. One YEAR after graduating, I was now going to work in the field that I studied for. I was one graduate among 11 current MBA students who were in between their first and second years. I didn't care. This was a win for me. I worked hard that summer, learned as much as I could, and left in August with a résumé that now helped recruiters and companies see the 'connection'. Ridiculous, right? The idea that I was now substantially more marketable because of a 10-week internship was silly. But, that's how many people view it which is why I knew the internship would pay off. A few months later, a recruiter helped me land a job where I remained for 4 years and 2 months. I was fortunate to work at that company because I learned and contributed more there than I would have at a larger company. In the end, this made the whole year after graduating worth it. I ultimately got to where I wanted to be at this point in my career. Remember, you are not at a disadvantage for not having a full-time job at this moment. Your path just looks different – which doesn't matter anyway. (Point #1) Focus on you and realize that you have a ton to offer a deserving organization. Do not let yourself get discouraged and do not let any company or individual make you second guess the reasons that got you to this point. There is no one right way to go about your career. Do what you need to do to set yourself up to keep moving towards whatever your short and long term goals are. I wish you all the best. I work with clients one-on-one. CONSTRUCTION MANAGER (CCM)
DRIVERS WANTED SEEKING OWNERS OF: Pickup Trucks Cargo Vans • MD Trucks
By Robin A Wright Earning a certificate in construction management, and thus earning the title "Certified Construction Manager" (CCM), will establish your expertise in this position. CCM is considered one of the highest standards in this profession, and is the only CM certification that is accredited by the American National Standards Institute. Approximately 2,000 individuals hold this certification in the construction industry. In order to qualify to earn this certification, there are two requirements. The first is 48 months experience as a CM in certain areas as shown by a specific Qualifications Matrix. This matrix includes areas such as project management, cost management, safety management, time management, contract administration, and quality management. Further focus includes pre-design, design, procurement, construction, and post-construction. There are certain focuses in which individuals must have focus. For example, pre-design and construction experience in project management, and design and construction in time management. A full chart should be studied to learn more about this requirement. The project experience is the most important aspect of the whole certification process. Every project must be documented and submitted, along with a 2-4 page explanation of each project. The second requirement asks for one of the following: • an undergraduate or graduate qualifying degree • a 2-year associates degree and four years experience in construction/design • no degree and eight years experience in design/construction

Degrees that will satisfy this condition include architecture, construction science, civil engineering, construction management, construction engineering technology, etc. Universities must also be accredited by the Council for Higher Education and the U.S. Department of Education. Within the exam, test takers will encounter seven different question subjects. Project Management, Cost Management, Time Management, and Safety & Risk Management each involve approximately 15% of the entire exam. Contract Administration will be 19%, while Quality Management is 11%, and Professional Practice is 9%. The exam consists of 200 multiple choice questions, and will take five hours to complete. After earning this certification, individuals must pay a fee of $200 every three years in order to become recertified. CMMs must also provide proof of fulfillment in three areas: involvement in the profession, contribution to the profession, professional development. While this certification may not increase annual salary, the title will enhance an individual's standing and expertise within their field. Since the certification exam contains questions regarding every aspect of the job, earning this title demonstrates advanced construction knowledge. Individuals must display an understanding concerning varying construction and/or design projects, and the processes involved from beginning to completion.
Any person who has experience working in design or construction may be eligible to earn this certification. Exams may be taken at approved testing centers, which are located throughout the country. After earning this title, a construction manager will have gained proOCTOBER 12, 2018 of their valuable knowledge and expertise. 50fessional confi rmation

CLOSE UP SMALL BUSINESS?
SPENDING MONEY IN THE BUDGET?
Dear Dave,
Dear Dave,
I have a small business, and I love what I do. Unfortunately, things haven’t been going well the last several months. On top of that, I’ve committed a lot of money to advertising in the coming year. Recently, I got a great job offer from a company that would pay me twice what I’m making now. What do you think I should do?
We are debt-free except for our home, and we have six months of expenses set aside in our emergency fund. Every time we do our monthly budget, we set aside a small amount of personal spending money for us both. Do you see anything wrong with this?
Hugh
DeAnna Dear DeAnna,
Dear Hugh, If it were me, I’d want to keep my options open. Closing your business would mean giving up all your customers. I’m not sure that’s a good idea when the offer has just been made, and you know so little about the actual job. If you think this new job is something you might like, why not accept the offer and see if you can continue your other work on the weekends? That would help cover some, if not all, of your advertising commitment. Plus, it would keep some money rolling in if the new job doesn’t work out. If you find you like this new job, then you’ve got a great income and something you like doing on weekends that pays. If you keep your business open — even on a small scale — there’s always a chance it will begin to grow again. Who knows? It might give you the opportunity to jump back into it full-time somewhere down the road!
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with having a little fun money calculated into your monthly budget when you’re in good financial shape. The problems start when couples don’t agree on these kinds of things — or worse — when they start hiding stuff and lying to each other about where the money’s going. People either grow together or they grow apart when they get married. When you start hiding things from your spouse you’re essentially keeping separate lives. That’s a bad sign in any marriage, and in many cases, this kind of thing leads to divorce. Having an agreed-upon budget isn’t just telling your money what to do. It’s also an important part of a healthy sharing and communication process between husband and wife! —Dave
