Vol. 20 Issue 1010 October 16 - October 23, 2015
AUSTIN (October 9) – Texas Governor Greg Abbott addressed the importance of veterans education and introduced an accelerated Veterans Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) through a partnership with the Texas Workforce Commission’s (TWC) College Credit for Heroes program, which has been successful in helping military veterans secure college credit for their military experience and re-enter the workforce. “The new Veteran Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center is the future of education, offering online access, competency-based evaluation and credit for previous education and training,” said Governor Abbott. “This accelerated 12-month degree program recognizes the value of veterans’ experience, knowledge and skills. If the rigorous training that military medics and corpsmen receive meets the standard of the U.S. Military, it should be good enough for Texas.” Speakers also included TWC Chairman Andres Alcantar, Texas Tech University (TTU) System Chancellor Robert L. Duncan and President of TTUHSC Dr. Tedd L. Mitchell.’ The College Credit for Heroes program has grown to include a network of 42 universities and community college partners who have developed curriculum or who honor credit awards for individuals with military service. Recently added partnership programs include a first-of-its kind partnership with TTU that creates a bachelor of nursing program for participating veterans and additional programs that further expand College Credit for Heroes to locations
throughout Texas These collaborations will increase the number of veterans and service members who can benefit from the accelerated educational programs for indemand occupations such as pharmacy technologist, emergency medical technician, medical assisting, dental assisting and registered nurse. “It takes a certain type of individual to make sacrifices on behalf of this country to protect our interests and our way of life,” said TWC Chairman Andres Alcantar. “These highly-trained individuals have gained incredible skills and knowledge that align favorably with the needs of Texas employers. We are committed to making our heroes transition to the civilian world successful, and this College Credit for Heroes program is doing just that.” The TTUHSC has developed an accelerated Veteran Bachelor of Science in Nursing (VBSN) degree in which wellqualified veterans can earn their Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree in less than one year. One unique and innovative aspect to this program is that veterans can participate in the program and receive their VBSN from locations throughout the state through online coursework and a network of participating hospitals. More information can be found on the TTUHSC website. About College Credit for Heroes College Credit for Heroes was launched in 2011 using $3 million in Workforce Investment Act (WIA) funds. The program was authorized during the 82nd legislative session under Senate Bill 1736. Phase II of the program began in 2012 expanding to other regions of the state and continuing the development of acceleration curricula for veterans. To view the results of College Credit for Heroes Phase I & II, visit TWC’s College Credit for Heroes (http://www.texasworkforce.org/ccfh). For more information on workforce programs available for Texas veterans, visit TWC’s Just for Veterans: http://vets.texasworkforce.org/

GET REAL With Real Estate Agent Shauna Ellsworth
hauna Ellsworth has been a realtor in the North Houston area for the last 5 months. Previously, she was an office manager / project manager for a local home builder, and would go out to the houses and check on the subcontractors, as well as schedule the subcontractors to do the work. JobSparx sat down with Shauna and talked with her about her career change and goals.
Do you think that the knowledge you gained at the home builder helped you in your new career? Definitely. I know how houses are built from the ground up. So when I go to show people houses, I can tell them how this or that might work, or this might be bad in your house because it doesn’t look right. I have a better understanding of the inspection process as well, and how that will work for my client.
What does your job look like on a day to day basis? There is a lot of phone work. I contact sales leads, then show houses. I get my leads through advertising on Zillow, and people call me. I also network. At first I called everyone I knew, and sent them a letter explaining my new job, and asked them to refer me to their friends and colleagues who were in the market for a new home.
What is your favorite part of the job? I love the freedom to be able to set my own schedule. So if I have something I need to do with my kids, I can arrange my work around it.
50
Vol. 20 Issue 1010 October 16 - October 23, 2015
So, what made you decide to become a Realtor? I was a Realtor for a while in Kansas. While there, my husband was deployed, and I had to put my career on the back burner to run his business while he was away. We also moved a lot with the military, so this was an opportunity when I worked for the home builder, he suggested I get my license. It was good to have some experience. I still work part time for the builder, and have been working as a real estate agent ever since earning my license.
What advice do you have for someone wanting to go into Real Estate? Study hard. It’s very important to study and understand the courses that you take to get your real estate license. There is a lot of legal information that you just don’t realize goes along with real estate.
What about where to take real estate courses? Are there places to avoid? Not that I am aware of. I studied my courses online, and I took almost a year to get my license because I was working at the time , so that was a way I could do both. But if you want to do it quickly, you can just go to a school that is in town. It’s not really expensive to get your real estate license. If you are doing it online, it’s the least expensive. If you attend the local school, it’s a little more expensive. I was also able to get a military discount.
To learn more about what it takes to become a Real Estate Agent in the state of Texas, visit the Texas Real Estate Commission online at www.trec.state.tx.us
Where would you like to be five years from now? Ultimately, I would like to be a home builder. I really enjoy the building side of real estate. Seeing something go from the ground to finished product is amazing to me. I can also take pride in saying, “Hey, I built that!” We are thinking about moving when our kids are grown, and I will need to start all over again in another state. Real estate laws are different in each state. However, some states are reciprocating states while some are not. (A reciprocating state is one that will recognize and grant licenses to real estate licensees from other states. These agreements vary from state to state. Some states recognize licenses from all other states, while some only have license reciprocity with a few neighboring states.) The state we would like to move to will look at the courses I have taken here in Texas as well as the hours that I have, and if it is similar to theirs, they will transfer it. No matter what their decision is, I will still need to take a 30 hour law course for that state. The Texas Real Estate test it is very stringent and difficult, but because I passed that, going to another state will be a breeze. You really have to stick with it. It’s not going to do you any good if you are not 100% committed. It’s not something you can say, “I will work tomorrow and take today off.” You have to work on it every single day. Sales is a hard career.
What do you need to do to achieve your goals? I just need to continue my education, and learn more about building. For now, I am just getting my required hours. Once you become a Realtor you still have another 60 hours of classes to complete within the first 2 years of having your license. I am still working on those 60 hours. Then, I want to start taking classes through the Greater Houston Builders Association. I would like to be my own broker/builder. You will be held legally liable if you get into a deal were you may have missed something. You need to really know the rules and the laws in your state. In Texas, you have to be an agent for 4 years before you can take the broker courses to make sure you know and understand the state laws. It’s all about education. The smarter you are, the better you can help your clients.
Ideal work environment I like being out. I don’t mind having a mobile office at all. I like to be showing homes, and just outside. My smart phone is my office, and I can always find a location with internet access, and am able to scan and send contracts with it.
Salary history I don’t have a lot of salary history yet in Texas, but it all depends on how much you work. It’s all commission based. I have been a Texas Realtor for five months, and will have my first closing next week. My second closing is the week after that. It continues to build up the more you work and get to know people. I could have a closing every month now because I have built it up so much. The time I put into it shows in the commissions I make.
What is your greatest achievement outside of work? My family. I have 9 kids and 9 grandkids, and love spending time with them. It’s the main reason I am spending so much Vol. 20 Issue 1010 16 - October 23, 2015 time now building up my career in thisOctober field.

UH Hilton Hospitality Industry Archives Showcased in Spielberg Thriller ‘Bridge of Spies’ By Marisa Ramirez | October 12, 2015
The Cold-War era story depicted in the new Steven Spielberg movie “Bridge of Spies,” also showcases the resources of the University of Houston Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management. The movie’s artistic director consulted with Professor Mark Young, director of the college’s Massad Family Research Center and Hospitality Industry Archives, for help in their depiction of the Berlin Hilton Hotel, which played a significant role in the spy exchange. “They wanted to underscore how important the Berlin Hotel was in those negotiations, so I applaud their desire to get it right,” Young said. “They asked about the hotel’s décor and the uniforms of the employees, which reflected the German culture. I shared images and postcards from our archive and gave them some of the history of the hotel.” The movie stars actor Tom Hanks as the

drama “Mad Men,” which featured a story arc on famed hotelier Conrad N. Hilton, and the short-lived series “Pan Am.”
Young says the Berlin Hilton differed from other Hilton hotels of that day in that its design was understated compared to the Hollywood splash of the Beverly Hilton and the flying carpet design of the porte-cochére at the Hilton Istanbul.
Established in 1989, the Hospitality Industry Archives include more than 3,000 linear feet of material, much of it devoted to the history of Hilton Hotels. The archives include memorabilia, advertising, publications and reports for other hospitality companies, such as Marriott International, Howard Johnson, Walt Disney and Brinker International, and contain the personal and corporate papers of Conrad, Barron and Eric Hilton.
“The rubble and destruction from World War II was still very visible all around them,” he said. “Hilton intentionally opted not to give it a very luxurious design. It was very sleek and modern, but understated, so as not to insult the Berliners.” Young has been a resource for other productions such as the Ron Howard film “Rush,” which detailed the real-life story of Formula One drivers. He also was consulted for the Emmy award-winning television

How to look without for a job Saying So by Kevin Kermes
A coaching client came to me with an opportunity that appeared to be wrapped in a problem. Christine was a financial services executive who had been downsized as a result of crashing markets.
See It In Action Knowing which companies she was interested in, Christine’s plan was to approach each using this technique:
Her opportunity? To attend a trade show that the top companies for whom she’d like to work would be attending.
Christine: Hi there. Christine X. You know, every time I see you guys in the press, your Morningstar rating just keeps climbing.
Her problem? As she put it: “Kevin, if I go around just handing out resumes, I’m going to feel like I have an enormous ‘L’ on my forehead.”
Company Rep: Yeah, it’s been a tough year, but our managers keep doing well in spite of it. I’m John, by the way. Who are you with, Christine?
So, here’s what we did.
Christine: I was with Citi, but was RIFed [reduced in force] a few months back. I decided to come down here and check out what’s going on in the industry.
Your New Approach First, there are more problems with attending an event like this with a ream of resumes in hand than feeling like a loser. While mindset is of the utmost of importance, even if you felt good about handing out your paper, the technique is littered with landmines in this instance. Primarily because the people working those booths at trade shows aren’t initially motivated to help find you a job (although, as you will see, you can get them there). Frankly, they’re probably just happy to still have their jobs (definitely the case in financial services). So your approach needs to be much more strategic. We started by talking about the companies that would be there that Christine wanted to approach. This was pretty easy, since there was a list. Next, we determined which of the product lines or specialties in those companies suited her best (annuities, mutual funds, etc.). Then, we identified who the keynote speakers were at the trade show for each of these product types and what the focus of their presentation was going to be. Finally, armed with all this information, Christine researched some interesting articles that paralleled these topics—some agreeing, some disagreeing, some that were one-offs. With all this homework done, we then formulated a plan—one that involved networking Vol. 20 Issue 1010 - October 23,ever 2015 saying “Are you this tradeOctober show16without hiring?”
54
Company Rep: I see. (starting to retract, expecting the “Are you hiring?” question) Christine: John, are you planning on going to the talk being put on by Dave Y about mutual funds? Company Rep: (surprised he didn’t get hit up about hiring) I’m going to try, but I’m not sure if I have to man the booth or not. It looks pretty interesting. Christine: It does. If you don’t get a chance to go, I’d be happy to share my notes. But I was also reading a recent article in Barron’s by James Z about mutual fund regulation. I’m not sure if Dave Y is going to get into that. James raised some great points. Did you read his article?
Why This Works (And Sets You Apart) Christine’s approach in the example above was all about networking—establishing rapport and beginning to work through the cycle of “know, like, trust.” After the trade show, she will follow up with John via email and, if he’s open to networking, begin seeing who he knows and how he can help her. After all, in the spirit of “give to get,” she has begun the process by sharing information with him that he found valuable. What this also does is position her to better understand what John’s company needs and how she does (or doesn’t) fit into the picture. She can then navigate more effectively towards the best opportunities for her, knowing where her skills fit and are needed versus giving some blanket elevator pitch that isn’t targeted towards the ideal job she’s seeking.
Interested in learning more about Kevin’s One-on-One Coaching Program? Company Rep: No, I didn’t, but it sounds inter- Email us at info@careerattraction.com esting. About Kevin Kermes Christine: It was. I’d be glad to email it to you. Kevin Kermes is an Entrepreneur, Author and Speaker. He served as an Infantry Officer Here’s my business card. Let’s trade, and I’ll and later, worked as a Headhunter where be sure to send it off once I get back home. he directed more than 1,000 searches. DIANA Q: I was in sales at a company that supplies valves to the oil industry. Two weeks ago, our department was let go. We took inbound calls from clients and made sure their shipments were handled. I’ve been applying for sales jobs, but none of them pay what I was making, and they have commissions. I want to know how much I’ll make every month. I asked one recruiter how often they give raises, and she acted like I was asking a stupid question. How can I find out upfront how the company pays? I don’t want to make cold calls to prospects. - Houston, Texas Reader A: Carefully read the ad before applying. The problem is not that you are getting the wrong answers; the problem is that you are applying to the wrong jobs. I’m sure it took a special person to handle your previous job and that you had to be trained in a lot of technical details. It’s been traditional to divide salespeople into two categories: Hunters and Farmers. A Hunter is usually thought of as someone who can prospect and generate leads and close deals. A sales Farmer typically means someone like you who can manage and grow existing accounts. Most
Hunter types have to retain their clients and build relationships, but they don’t mind picking up the phone and making cold calls. Farming sales usually have a nice base and very little commission or bonus structure. The reverse is true with the Hunter model: they usually have a smaller base with excellent bonuses or commissions. Usually they make more than individuals who are handling existing business because they grow the company by growing their client base. When you ask about frequent raises, it is confusing to companies with excellent commissions. It takes different personalities to perform either job, and you need to make sure that the job for which you apply is like the job you had before, or you need to change direction and learn to be more of a Hunter. Read more at http://info.theladders.com/career-advice/ hunter-farmer-job-search. Q: I interviewed with a company about a year ago and really loved the people who interviewed me. I don’t know why I wasn’t hired because the interview seemed to go really good. I want to interview again and see if maybe they can change their mind. Do you think that’s a good idea?
-Magnolia, Texas Reader A: No. If your experience and skills had met their criteria, you would be employed! Set your sights on a job that more closely matches your experience. Q: I keep getting turned down for jobs because I live further outside Houston. I worked in the Galleria area for two years, and understand that I will have to make the effort. What can I say to convince them? -Dayton, Texas Reader A: Not much. Try saying that you understand that the drive is the price you pay for enjoying a more rural lifestyle. Good luck. If you have any questions about interviewing, hiring, or work, just email Ask Diana. I’d love to hear from you. Due to the volume of response, not ever y question will appear in the column, but most questions will receive an email response within 2 to 3 day s.

felt ashamed about how ugly it got and didn’t want to tell anybody.
Dear Dave,
Not counting your house, you’ve got about $125,000 in debt. You’ve got to look at all this with a $100,000 income and say, “What is the fastest way to clean up this dadgum mess?” T h a t ’s g o i n g t o m e a n b e a n s a n d rice, rice and beans. That means a scorched-earth lifestyle and living on a budget, which also means you’re not going out to eat, not going on vacations, and you’re going to start selling so much stuff that the kids think they’re next.
I’ve spent most of my marriage not being a good husband and not being involved in our family finances. After being introduced to one of your prog rams a t work, I realized how irresponsible I had been and went home to apologize and tell my wife about it. During this conversation I learned that we have about $80,000 in debt I didn’t know about, plus $45,000 in debt on a new car and motorcycle I did know about. We also have a mortgage on our home. My wife apologized for making a mess of things, but it wasn’t all her fault. She wasn’t sneaking around spending and taking out debt, she just made mistakes and was afraid to tell me. Together, we make about $100,000 a year. Can you help us? — Curtis Dear Curtis,

I’m really glad you’ve made the decision to man up. That’s a big step in the right direction for you and your marriage. To me, what you described is a lot different than her completely lying, hiding stuff, and actively having a financial affair — so to speak — on the side. You weren’t plugged in and she wasn’t doing a good job, but she didn’t have anyone to talk to about it. Things got worse, then she probably
I’d probably sell the car and the motorcycle. Get into a couple of basic cars, and spend about two years of crazy intensity getting debt free except for your home. You can clean this up that fast, but you’re going to have no life during that time. The two of you have some relationship work to do also. It sounds like you’ve already started on that with you owning your part and her owning hers. The thing is not to blame. From this point forward you need to sit down together and make all of your decisions — financial and otherwise — together. Trust me, if you’re both willing, you can heal the math problem, the debt problem and the marriage problem all at the same time. It will be an amazing thing! — Dave

The mikeroweWORKS Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes hard work, supports the skilled trades, and challenges the persistent belief that a four-year degree is automatically the best path to take. The Foundation awards scholarships to men and women who have demonstrated an interest in and an aptitude for mastering a specific trade. Our focus is on supporting the specific skilled trades that help close the country’s skills gap and those that represent the significant bulk of our unfilled jobs. The Foundation has been instrumental in granting more than $3 million in scholarships to schools around the country, including Midwest Technical Institute, Tulsa Welding School, The Refrigeration School and Universal Technical Institute. One of the most important objectives of the mrW Foundation is to continually provide opportunities for financial aid to help those qualified individuals who are interested in learning a skill and mastering a trade. Toward that goal, we are continually creating a variety of scholarship programs with like-minded institutions and organizations. Each program has it’s own nuances but all are similar in that they intend to further Mike’s “PR Campaign for Hard Work.”
Insider’s Look at Job Interviewing
By Robin Ryan author of “60 Seconds & You’re Hired!”
When you go into a job interview are you ready to answer the hard questions? Think so? Most people believe that and then they get there and they don’t get hired. They make a mistake which typically comes from how they answer the questions. It makes me wonder how much time people actually prepare before they face the employer. For example:
2
1
Have you written out answers to the potential questions you are likely to get asked? It’s a terrific technique I advise my clients to do to help them improve before they go into an interview.
4
3
Did you research the company and the job? Have you gone on LinkedIn and reviewed the hiring manager’s profile? You can learn a lot and its important info you want to know before you meet face-to-face.
Is your interview outfit a contemporary suit? Does it fit well and make you look terrific? Knowing you look your best will add to your self-confidence.
Are you armed with your 5 Point Agenda and your 60 Second Sell? These tools are essential to excel in the interview.
5
Are you ready for the salary questions? Do you know what your skills are worth in today’s market place and exactly what you should expect to be paid? If not, try looking at Payscale.com to learn the answer.
According to Glassdoor, here are some of the tricky questions that you would have been asked recently if you went for an interview at Apple. Keep in mind that many companies like to ask these kinds of hard questions. “What are your failures, and how have you learned from them?” “Describe an interesting problem and how you solved it.” “Have you ever disagreed with a manager’s decision, and how did you approach the disagreement? Give a specific example and explain how you rectified this disagreement, what the final outcome was, and how that individual would describe you today.” “Tell me something that you have done in your life which you are particularly proud of.” “Describe yourself, what excites you?” “If we hired you, what do you want to work on?” “Why should we hire you?” “Are you creative? What’s something creative that you can think of?” “Describe a humbling experience.” “What’s more important, fixing the customer’s problem or creating a good customer experience?” “Show me (role play) how you would show a customer you’re willing to help them by only using your voice.”
It was Apple after all, which means they would been asked some curve ball questions: “How many children are born every day?” “When you walk in the Apple Store as a customer, what do you notice about the store/how do you feel when you first walk in?” “You have a 100 coins lying flat on a table, each with a head side and a tail side. 10 of them are heads up, 90 are tails up. You can’t feel, see or in any other way find out which side is up. Split the coins into two piles such that there are the same number of heads in each pile.” “There are three boxes, one contains only apples, one contains only oranges, and one contains both apples and oranges. The boxes have been incorrectly labeled such that no label identifies the actual contents of the box it labels. Opening just one box, and without looking in the box, you take out one piece of fruit. By looking at the fruit, how can you immediately label all of the boxes correctly?” “If you have 2 eggs, and you want to figure out what’s the highest floor from which you can drop the egg without breaking it, how would you do it? What’s the optimal solution?”
Preparation is the key to being ready and excelling in any job interview. So are you ready to go in and do your best to impress an employer?
