Logistics By Earl White

A Warehouse Manager's Worth

If I were to tell you that the Warehouse Manager could be the most valuable employee at a company would you be shocked? I'm sure that your immediate reaction is, "Are you kidding?" How could a Warehouse guy, who probably only makes $10.00$15.00 /hr, be the Most Valuable Employee at a company? What about Sales? What about the big wigs that are making the six-figure salaries? Well, if you are in tuned with your position, understand the company, and are staying up to date with related Supply Chain & Logistic information that pertains to your company, this is not hard to imagine. I had the good fortune to work with a variety of different personalities while I was a courier at Federal Express, from the janitor to the CEO. I had the pleasure of meeting a gentleman who very much impressed me.

Although I couldn't see the actual effects at first, I could tell that Mark's responsibilities and functions were changing. Instead of being on the docks, working hard, he was now in an office behind computers, working just as hard. Instead of busting through piles of boxes, I began noticing that his box pile was ever so dramatically decreasing, and becoming spread out throughout the week. When I asked him about this, he smiled and said, "I've been experimenting J.I.T. (just in time management) so that OCTOBER 19, 2018 10with

When the sales staff was invited to Las Vegas to celebrate their company's huge 5 million dollar year, the CEO asked Mark to join. Mark graciously accepted, and upon his trip was presented with the companies Most Valuable Employee award. WOW! For a "Warehouse guy"? That's right! Now can everybody be a Mark? Maybe, or maybe not... But the idea is that you can take a vested interest in your company's business, start diving in and learning more about your supply chain, and you can raise your status within the company, gaining importance by way of production and results, the way Mark did. On last communication, Mark is now helping a Fortune 500 company in a Supply Chain Manager role. The average Supply Chain Manager makes between $94,114 $110,305. He has achieved several SCM certificates, and has developed a staff that truly understands how to get the most out of their supply chain. He has instituted a program that requires his employees to obtain a company-paid certificate, as his belief is that, if he can build character in his people, they in turn will take pride in their duties. He often says, "Run the business as if it were your own, and then and only then, will you make the right decisions, and learn from the wrong ones." He has sought out, and put to use, a Third Party Solution that allows him to utilize Supply Chain Optimization to the utmost. He knows where all of his money is going, and he understands the flow of his inventory.

1 Start asking questions to the various departments; understand the different job duties such as Customer Service, Operations, Sales, and Production. 2 Ask your manager if you can spend a half-hour in a specific department. If your time is that tight, and you only can do this during lunch hour, then do it. Look at it as an investment in your future. Would you rather have a shortened lunch, or no job? 3 If you can take additional supply chain

courses do so, and if your company will reimburse them, by all means take advantage of it.

4 Get the notion out of your head that "I'm just a Warehouse guy". If I had a nickel for every time I would hear this I'd be sipping Mai Tai's with Donald Trump somewhere in the Bahamas. Never forget that you, and your product, are a major contributor to a $240 billion dollar a year industry. 5 Become more than a "Warehouse guy",

build yourself as a valued contributor to your companies success. Remember, within your position, there are endless opportunities to help your company thrive in this economy. When you show this value to your employers, they will see that, not only can they not afford to lose your expertise, but that they will soon need to provide more incentives for you to stay. It's hard to find a solid employee, especially one that can add value to a supply chain.

6 Don't be afraid to challenge the status

quo. Just because a company has been doing things a certain way for X amount of years, don't let that dissaude you from being creative.

7 Last, but not least, apply what you have learned, and don't be afraid to make a mistake.

Earl White is a National Account Manager, with One Stop Logistics a Third Party Logistics company based out of Watsonville, Ca. He has been in Sales for over 15 years and works with many sales reps to help them gain better footing when it comes to the elusive practice of working with clients. He enjoys being able to pass on many of the skills he has learned from Top Salesman in the Industry. Earl has a Masters Degree in Business and is currently pursuing his Supply Chain Degree. He has sold for such great companies as FedEx, Yellow Transportation, and Roadrunner Transportation.

VOL. 23 ISSUE 1163

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/expert/Earl_White/513295

His name was Mark, and he was not your typical "Warehouse Guy". Mark made the effort to learn about his company's business. Not just the typical, "what they make, what they do, or who his customers were..." But Mark new his position well. He had very detailed instructions for the other employees as to how to get the job done in the event he took some time off. He also had a passion for working in the warehouse. Mark read so much about Supply Chain and Logistics that his manager asked him if would he be interested in going after a Supply Chain Certificate. Although there was never promise of a pay raise, Mark became very excited about the opportunity. He looked upon it as a way to broaden his horizons, and become more of an attribute to his company.

I can try to alleviate some of this massive inventory we have on our hands."

7 Ways to start raising your status at your Warehouse job immediately.

6 Key Character Traits of

PEOPLE WHO WIN

WITH MONEY by Rachel Cruze

Meet the Smith family. Both parents work, and they make good money. From the outside, life looks good — a new Tahoe, a big house, and private schools for the kids. But in reality, the Smiths are barely scraping by. With the help of credit cards and car loans, they spend more money than they make, and they’re just one financial emergency away from being in serious trouble. Then, there’s the Williams family. One parent works, and makes decent money, while the other stays at home and takes care of the kids. The Williams family lives on a budget, and even though they still have a lot of student loan debt, they’ve cut the balance in half during the last two years. They have a small emergency fund saved, and they expect to be out of debt completely in two years.

Keeping up with the Joneses? Forget about it! One of the mistakes people make is to fall into the social media comparison game. You pull up Instagram and see beautiful photos from your friend Sarah’s Caribbean cruise. Meanwhile, you haven’t been on vacation in a year because you’re working so hard to get out of debt. But confident people stay focused on their goals and understand that sacrifices are temporary. They know they’ll be able to take that cruise soon enough!

They’re goal-oriented. People who win with money approach goals with incredible passion. Save $1,000? Check. Get out of debt? Check. Build a full emergency fund? Check. For them, setting goals is fun. This isn’t some special skill you’re born with. Anyone can develop the habit of goal-setting, and here are a few basic tips. 1.

Write them down and put them in a visible spot. Seeing your goals written out every day will keep them at the front of your mind. Be specific. Exactly how much debt do you want to pay off each month? How much weight do you want to lose each month? Set a time limit. Where’s your finish line? And, remember, be realistic. You’ll probably need more than a month to get out of debt!

So, what do you think is the difference between the Smiths and the Williamses? Why is one family able to pay off thousands of dollars in debt on a tight budget, while another family barely gets by week after week? Why does one person succeed with money, while another person struggles?

2.

There are dozens of factors, but, many times, it comes down to these key characteristics.

They’re responsible. They get it. They understand in order to get to where they want to be financially, they might have to take a year off from vacation, skip dining out for a few months, or cut back on grocery spending. And honestly, couldn’t we all cut back on grocery spending? When I talk with people about their budgets, food is one of the main areas where people overspend — either at the grocery store or dining out. Responsible people are willing to look at their money situation and make smart choices. I know sometimes “adulting” isn’t fun. But those smaller, “boring” decisions, like budgeting and staying on top of your account balance, can put you in a place to have a lot more fun later. That’s becoming a theme here, isn’t it?

They’re patient. People who win with money are patient. They can delay a short-term pleasure for a long-term gain. In other words, they can walk right by the shoe section without blinking. They know $100 shoes would be nice, but they have higher priorities. That’s because they understand the bigger picture. It’s about retirement and college funds and that beach vacation they’re dreaming about. Believe me, I love the shoe section. But when I stop and pick up a pair of designer shoes in a store, I ask myself if we’ve budgeted for this and if buying that pair of shoes effect our priorities. They’re confident. When you’re in control of

your money, you’re confident. You also don’t care when other people look down their noses at you, because you’re cutting back on lifestyle costs.

20

OCTOBER 19, 2018

3.

vacations are perfectly fine, but someone who wins with money understands all those things by themselves don’t bring happiness. They live their lives with that in mind. That doesn’t mean they’re against owning stuff, or they think wealthy people are somehow “evil,” they just get the fact that money isn’t everything.

They’re willing to sacrifice. They understand budget cuts are just temporary. Five years from now, once they’re out of debt and winning with money, they’ll look back on those sacrifices with a smile. This is a big one, and it works closely with patience and responsibility. Sacrifice can’t happen if you aren’t patient or responsible, because you can’t get past the immediate rush of having something or doing something right now. When it comes to sacrificing with money, you must look past today.

The great thing about these characteristics is you can develop them. Even if you aren’t naturally patient, or you aren’t a big goal setter, you can develop these character traits by working to create new habits in your life. And when these habits turn into character traits, you’ll be well on your way toward winning with money for good! About Rachel Cruze As a #1 New York Times best-selling author and host of The Rachel Cruze Show, Rachel helps people learn the proper ways to handle money and stay out of debt. She’s authored three best-selling books, including Love Your Life, Not Theirs and Smart Money Smart Kids, which she co-wrote with her father, Dave Ramsey. You can follow Cruze on Twitter and Instagram at @RachelCruze and online at rachelcruze.com, youtube.com/rachelcruze or facebook.com/rachelramseycruze.

They aren’t materialistic. They understand that you can have a bunch of stuff without being wealthy, and you can be wealthy without owning a bunch of stuff. Big houses, nice cars, and fancy VOL. 23 ISSUE 1163

6 Common Email Mistakes That Everyone Makes Email has become an essential and invaluable part of everyday work life. That's because emails are fast, easy to use, and less formal than talking on the phone, and they allow users to look back at their previous conversations and recall what was discussed. Like every form of communication, emails also has its ups and downs. Sometimes, a simple mistake can spell major disaster during your email conversation. Here are a few simple, but deadly, mistakes to avoid:

You weren't clear about your request.

Forge ing to "Reply All."

Your email is too long.

When you are emailing to someone directly, and they CC'd someone else on the conversation, they usually expect you to click "Reply All" even if they didn't explicitly say it. This often happens when communicating with recruiters, bosses, managers, and many other people. It can be easy to just click "Reply" and forget about the other names that are CC'd on the message, but those people will miss out on important parts of the conversation. Make it a habit to click "Reply All," even when you are only talking to one person.

Not replying at all.

Some emails require you to reply to them even if you would normally forget to do so. For example, you might receive an email that tells you about an awesome company party that you can't wait to attend. You quickly browse the email and then save the date on your calendar and move onto your next message. What you didn't read was that you were required to reply to the sender in order to confirm your spot so that the planners know how many people are supposed to show up. Always remember to reply when requested.

Replying when you don't need to.

With the above point in mind, you don't always need to reply to all of your messages. Usually, if you receive a request from the other person, you want to confirm that you have understood their directions or that you have read their request. However, the problem comes when you feel the need to reply to absolutely every message in your inbox, no matter how insignificant they may be. It's good to keep on top of your messages, but it is often not worth replying when all you have to say is "yeah," "OK," or "got it." These are shorter than your average text message and will just fill up other people's inboxes. Of course, you should always use your judgment and decide for yourself whether or not those messages are worth replying to.

22

OCTOBER 19, 2018

One bad thing about email is that it takes away the nonverbal cues and signals often found in face-to-face communication, leaving some messages open to interpretation. Tone of voice and other nonverbal elements are simply lost between communicators. Try to be crystal clear in whatever you're saying and don't be afraid to dumb it down, just in case, so that nobody can possibly misinterpret your message. You're not the only one with an inbox that is stuffed to the brim with extraneous messages. All of your co-workers, managers, and friends are also likely sorting through dozens and dozens of different messages. Because everyone has so much work to do, and so little time, you should take into consideration just how long your messages are. Remember that whomever you're sending your message to doesn't have that much free time to spare. On average, people check their inboxes about 36 times a day and only spend about 15 to 20 seconds reading an email. If you try and fit an essay into someone's inbox, chances are that they will never get past the first few sentences. Feel free to chop off some of the extra sentences and other fluff that you don't need.

Using the wrong words.

Not all words were created equally and some words might rub people the wrong way unintentionally. The Muse listed a few different words that you should try avoiding next time you send an email. "Sorry" is one of the words because apologizing, especially when you did nothing wrong, is usually an admission of guilt. Besides, the word "sorry" has become so overused that it has lost its meaning. Another word to avoid is "hopefully" because it sounds far too vague and uncertain. If you were to say "Hopefully, this task won't be a problem," you are basically admitting self-doubt. You should also avoid vague phrases like "kind of" and "sort of." These will make you seem less confident and capable. Try to fix your tone to make yourself seem strong and proud. These items are just a few things that could help make your emails go much more smoothly. Emails can certainly be both a blessing and a curse; it's important to recognize the upsides while trying to avoid the downsides as much as possible. Emails might seem the easiest form of communication to master, it is still a good idea to be cautious and to learn from mistakes as you go along. VOL. 23 ISSUE 1163

Hiring now in Galveston with paid training:

CABLE TECHNICIAN INSTALLER

Q: *Can you please keep me anonymous?* I work as a temp worker, and the boss has said that they don’t think the temp position I am on will last too much longer, but they can’t tell me when the assignment will end. I want to know what the right thing to do is: Should I tell my temp agency that I am going to start posting my resume on job boards b/c the assignment may end soon? I feel like this would be the right thing to do but I am concerned that my agency will say, ‘Well, if you are going to put your resume out there and look for another job, then we need to replace you at this job.’

Paid Training & Paid weekly Health, Dental & Vision Insurance Vacation Pay, Sick Pay & 401k

I don’t want to burn bridges with my agency b/c I may need them in the future. Can you advise me what the right thing to do is in light of my concern? Thank you for your help. -Houston, Texas Reader A: Everyone is anonymous in my column! You need to start looking for a job and circulating your resume right now! If you don’t know when this one will end, you can’t plan the best time to look. I agree that you don’t want to burn bridges, but you also don’t want to be out of work for any length of time. I would not tell them, because they already told you that you need to look. Your boss was giving you a heads-up when she/he told you that it won’t last much longer. She expects you to start looking. When you get an off er, you can give two weeks notice. Normally, they will just release you immediately. However, if they know the project will end sooner than that, they may ask you to stay for the transition. Q: Since we talked, I have started taking Spanish classes and will fi nish the 14 week course; I have reached out to Lone Star College concerning the Fast-Track Work force classes, and am going to WorkForce Solutions on Monday to discuss other options. I found two temporary agencies that, based on their websites and success stores, I feel comfortable in registering with them. I have a question: where do the job functions of volunteer work go on a resume? Is it at the fi rst portion of your work history or under the category of volunteer? Have a great day, Diana!

WHY WORK FOR SURECARE AT HOME?

-Houston, Texas Reader A: Hi! It’s great to hear from you. You have really been busy in your job search. I always admire your proactive attitude: You reach out for every opportunity, and you prepare yourself for them. I wish everyone had your work ethic! You list your volunteer work exactly as you would a job. Your duties are listed under the name of the agency and your title - just as you would for a job. Realize that your position is volunteer, but that you would be paid for the same work if you were at a for-profi t company. Take care!! -If you have any questions about interviewing, hiring, or work, I’d love to hear from you. Due to the volume of response, not every question will appear in the column, but most questions will receive an email response within 2 to 3 days.

References? How To Secure The Strongest References For Your Job Search By Michael M DeSafey

GENERAL

INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR

DRIVERS WANTED SEEKING OWNERS OF: Pickup Trucks Cargo Vans • MD Trucks

Today, one of the most important aspects of a successful job search and obtaining that next career advancement opportunity will most likely come down to your references. Over 90% of all employers make their final hiring decision based on what your references say about you.

REQUIRES: T.W.I.C or T.S.A Certification GPS • Valid Insurance Smartphone • Email

On Demand 24/7 Air Freight and Direct Local/Regional

New employers often check references to find out what type of employee you were, how you worked with others, the quality of your skills and qualifications, as well as, confirm the legitimacy of the information you have provided on your resume. Who you use as a reference is very important to your overall job search and you need to give some serious consideration as to who you want to use as a reference. Most employers like to see your past employers, your superiors, coworkers, or clients as references. The following are four tips that will help make your references much stronger. 1. Never list your references on your resume. The best method for providing references is to wait for an employer to ask for a few references.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/expert/Michael_M_DeSafey/1832732

This request usually occurs after the interview and the employer has some serious interest in hiring you. By providing references at this time it will allow you to strategically select references that will provide the employer the most relevant information about your skills and qualifications, based on the job you are interviewing for. 2. Speak with your references before submitting them to an employer. The worst thing you can do is list an individual as a reference without telling them that you are going to use them as a reference. You want to speak with all your potential references ahead of time. Ask for permission to use them as a reference and make sure they are willing to give you a good reference. 3. Provide them with all the information that they may need to prepare them for what an employer might ask. If a potential employer is planning on calling your references and asking about a specific skill set or qualification; then talk with your reference about that. Refresh their memories about your skills, go over what you want your references to focus on to provide the employer as much relevant information as possible. 4. Always keep in communication with your references. Having particularly strong references that you can use throughout your career is essential. You always want to keep in touch with those individuals, just to check in sometimes, stay in touch and see how they are doing. By keeping the relationship fresh and maintaining the business connection your references will last throughout your career. EMERGENCY FUND IN CASH?

PAY IT OFF!

Dear Dave,

I can’t decide what to do about my car. I owe $8,000 on it, and I have the cash to pay it off with plenty left over. One of my co-workers said I shouldn’t pay it off, because I have a very low interest rate on the loan. What do you think?

Dear Dave,

My wife and I are completely debt-free. We would like to have part of our emergency fund in cash inside a heavy duty safe at home. How should we document this cash in the event of fire or theft? Also, would our homeowners insurance policy cover cash?

Derricka

Will

Dear Derricka,

Dear Will,

What do I think? I think your co-worker is broke. Taking financial advice from broke people is like taking dieting advice from fat people. In other words, it’s dumb.

Typically, homeowners insurance policies have a limit as to how much cash they will cover. I’d advise re-reading your policy, and double checking with your insurance agent just to be sure. When it comes to documenting valuables, I’d suggest making a video or taking photographs. Just to be extra cautious, you could store these in a safe deposit box at your local credit union or bank. Having some cash on hand is never a bad thing. When it comes to the portion of your emergency fund you keep at home, I’d recommend just being reasonable. If you’ve got $10,000 set aside for emergencies, I’m okay with you keeping $5,000 at home in a quality safe. I wouldn’t put all, or even most of it, in a safe, though. Again, just make sure your homeowners policy covers anything you might put in there. A strong, fireproof safe is a must!

Pay off your car, and never borrow money to buy a car again for the rest of your life. If you want to win with money, you have to get out of the land of car payments. The idea that you’re stuck with car payments — that you’re always going to have one — is the mantra of those who’ve given up hope. You are in charge of your life. You are in charge of your financial situation. Don’t be like all those folks out there who whine about stuff like stagnant wages and are unwilling to get up off their stagnant butts to make their lives better. Derricka, pay off your car today. And please, don’t take any more financial advice from broke people! —Dave
