An incident investigation is the account and analysis of an incident based on information gathered by a thorough examination of all causal and contributing factors involved. It gets to the root causes of the incident, so similar occurrences can be prevented and future losses in the workplace can be avoided. Investigations are conducted to meet legal compliance, but more importantly to help prevent reoccurrences. Therefore, it is essential to ensure those who are responsible for investigating incidents are properly trained. The objectives of this course will focus on techniques for gathering complete, accurate and objective incident data, how to conduct effective interviews, identifying causal and contributing factors, reporting findings and various tools and techniques for conducting an investigation. Additionally, we will discuss some common mistakes that companies often make when conducting incident investigations and how to avoid them. For more information, or to register, call 409-933-836

In this session, we will discuss strategies and techniques to overcome these misconceptions.

5 money saving tricks for a

HAPPIER HALLOWEEN Courtesy of DaveRamsey.com

We love Halloween. What other night can you dress like a hot dog, and eat all your favorite childhood sweets without having someone judge you? The problem is we may love it a little too much. According to a consumer spending survey, it’s projected that Americans will spend somewhere in the neighborhood of $6.9 billion — that’s “billion” with a “b” — on Halloween this year. That means the average American will spend about $74 on the holiday. If you’re tight on cash, that figure may sound scary. But the good news is it doesn’t have to be. You can buy as little as you like and still have a great time. Try these five simple tricks to stay on budget:

1. the costume games Instead of buying a $40 Ninja Turtles costume for each of your three boys — or sewing some rough-looking versions from scratch — turn it into a family game. Think Project Runway meets Supermarket Sweep. Here’s how it works: Head to the consignment shop or thrift store with your brood and give each child an envelope with five or ten bucks inside. Split into teams to pick out a costume, or find materials to make a custom creation. When time’s up and purchases are made, head home and have the kids dig into their closets for the rest of their getups. Finally, hit the runway, and may the best designer win!

2. d.i.y. decorations Your attic, basement and coat closets are already overflowing with Christmas wreaths and ski gear. Even if you could afford that giant, inflatable cat in a pumpkin, where in the heck would you to put it? Unless you’re reusing decorations from last year, there’s no need to go all out for Halloween.

get the brand-name stuff either. Just buy what you can afford, and when it’s gone, it’s gone. These kids are getting a lot of sugar, so you’re not depriving the latecomers. Early birds get the gummy worms!

4. free fall activities There are heaps of harvest and Halloween festivals this time of year. And they’re usually free! So take advantage of what’s already going on in your church or community, and budget a little extra for any special games, crafts or kiddie rides. And since fair food can add up if you’re not careful, save some cash by packing a picnic and a cozy quilt before you go. Just be sure to budget for a funnel cake while you’re there — it’s a fall festival essential.

5. family traditions Carve out a weekend or two for some quality time together. You don’t necessarily have to paint pumpkins or dress up, but it can be fun to start a few new fall traditions. How about a harvest-themed cooking day? Try caramel apples, pumpkin pie and jack-o-lantern pizzas (use the pepperonis and veggies to make the face). Or have everyone vote for their favorite fall movies, then hunker down on the couch (or maybe under a fort) to snuggle and munch the day away. And if you’d rather be outside, head over to the park for a scavenger hunt and enjoy the scenery while you search. There’s no wrong way to celebrate Halloween. As long as your loved ones are together, laughing and soaking in the blessings of the season, you’ll have a blast — even on a bite-size budget! *To read more money related articles, visit http://www.daveramsey.com/blog.

Instead, take a sunny afternoon trip to your local pumpkin patch, and let each child pick one small pumpkin. Spend the rest of the day walking around the farm or enjoying a hayride. Back at home, carve or paint your pumpkins and display them on the porch with a few homemade signs to welcome your trick-or-treaters. When Halloween’s over, there’s no need for storage!

3. candy portion control Just because you live in a neighborhood that gets carloads of kids every year, that doesn’t mean you have to buy carloads of candy. If you already know you’ll be visited by 50 – 100 princesses and superheroes, skip the gourmet chocolate bars and grab a bulk bag of assorted candy instead. And don’t feel like you have to

5 Ways to Turn Retirement Dreams into Reality

By Chris Hogan

October 21-27 is National Retirement Security Week, and I’m excited that people are waking up to the importance of planning for the future. They know the actions they take now will make or break the golden years. Let’s be honest, though. Building wealth takes time. It’s easy to get distracted by short-term wants, like that fancy new car or fantasy vacation. So how, exactly, do you stay focused on a long-term goal like retirement? Here’s an illustration that might help. Some athletes use visualization as a part of their preparation for competition. They mentally rehearse hitting a shot, defending a goal, running a sprint, or swimming a lap. And then, when the time comes, those athletes take action. They run, jump, swing, race, swim, hit, defend and win. They see the goal in their minds—and then they make it happen. The same principle applies to your retirement savings. You need to visualize what you see yourself doing when you retire—traveling, writing, volunteering, learning, exploring, growing. Once you have that mental picture firmly rooted in your mind, it’s time to take action. You do whatever it takes to make that dream become reality.

Here are five things you can do: 1. Use auto draft. If you participate in your company-sponsored retirement plan—401(k) or 403(b)—you’re already using auto draft. Money goes straight from your paycheck to your retirement fund without you seeing it in your bank account. But that’s not the only option for auto draft. Some employers will also transfer money from your paycheck into an IRA account. You just have to tell your payroll manager how much you want taken out of each check. If that’s not an option, work directly with a brokerage firm to schedule automatic transfers from your checking account into an IRA account. 2. Avoid lifestyle creep. It’s easy to up your standard of living as your salary increases. That’s why you don’t see seasoned lawyers living in the same dump they rented during law school. Here’s the problem, though: If you’re not careful, your new lifestyle can outrun your budget. Yes, you want nice things for you and your family, but don’t get too carried away trying to keep up with the Joneses. They’ll still be paying for their poor money choices long after you’ve retired. 3. Limit celebration spending. I once worked with a couple who had worked hard for eight years to pay off their debt, including their home mortgage. To celebrate their accomplishment, they took out a $100,000 loan to buy a sailboat. That celebration put them right back into debt! It’s okay to celebrate huge milestones like birthdays, anniversaries and graduations—within reason. But that doesn’t mean you should take out a loan so your daughter can drive to college in a cool ride. She can drive an older car you bought with cash. 4. Delay Social Security. Here’s a little-known fact about receiving your Social Security benefits: You don’t have to start taking that money when you hit the full benefit age. If you wait until age 70, you could get up to 132 percent of your Social Security benefits. Let’s say you would be eligible for $1,000 a month at age 67. If you waited until age 70, you could get up to $1,320 a month. I know you could put that extra money to good use.

Whether you’re in your twenties or your sixties, you need to make a few strategic choices that will help you keep your eye on the prize. You need to protect yourself against bad decisions and put yourself in a

Whether you’re in your twenties or your sixties, you need to make a few strategic choices that will help you keep your eye on the prize. You need to protect yourself against bad decisions and put yourself in a position to win.

position to win.

5. Stay connected. Autopilot is great for transatlantic flights, but it’s horrible for investing. You can’t just throw a bunch of money into a retirement account and let it go unmanaged and unchecked for years. You need to meet regularly with an investment professional to review your investments. Over time, you’ll need to adjust your portfolio as the market changes—and as you get closer to retirement. It’s your money, so it’s your responsibility to invest it well. Hear me when I say it’s critical that you visualize your retirement now. Otherwise, you won’t have a goal to chase after. That retirement dream will give you the boost you need when you’re working those extra hours and living a cash-only lifestyle. On the flip side, don’t get so wrapped up in the dream that you forget to keep taking steps forward. You can’t just wish yourself into a great retirement. It takes a great dream—and a lot of hard work!

ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS

ARE IN DEMAND Building a Successful Career as an Electrical Engineer

Electrical Engineers are in demand now more than ever, given the explosions in the areas of energy, information, health, and flight. In order to build a career as an exceptional engineer, a person needs the proper education, skills, and character traits to succeed.

Education

Electrical engineering degrees one can pursue are a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, a Master of Engineering or Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, or a Doctorate of Philosophy in Engineering. Obtaining an accredited Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering Degree requires a person to be accepted into a separate school of engineering. Undergraduate degrees are designed to take four years to complete with a full load of classes each semester.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/expert/Michael_M_DeSafey/1832732

Classes will be heavy in mathematics, physics, computer science, chemistry, statistics and basic engineering. According to Princeton University. "If you enjoy these subjects, then you will find engineering a fascinating and rewarding field of study with many opportunities to solve key engineering problems. Sub areas within the discipline range from the exploration of information and its communication, through the physics of new materials and devices and the circuits made from them, to the algorithms that run on next generation computing platforms."

Skills

An electrical engineer will need most or all of the following skills: •

Ability to use MathCAD, AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, and other computer engineering programs and write code using C or C++ • Proficiency with numerical analysis software: matlab, maple, mathmatica, etc. • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment • Strong skills in mixed signal (analog and digital) circuit design, board layout, noise, grounding, and signal integrity issues • Ability to use circuit simulation tools • Ability to contribute to design reviews and design verification testing and related documentation 22 OCTOBER 19, 2018

By Michael M DeSafey

Specific skills in each industry where electrical engineers are employed will be necessary as well, and can vary greatly from one field to the next.

Character Traits

To be an exceptional engineer, a person needs certain character traits that lend well to the field. Employers seek electrical engineers with a desire to explore and solve problems with tenacity and determination. Knowing they have someone on the job who doesn't give up is an asset to a company. An engineer will also need a willingness to think outside the box and welcome the input of colleagues to the project at hand. A person who is able to work well with others and put their heads together to solve problems will be well respected within their field. Having the ability to see the big picture and how their portion fits into the whole is very important, since an electrical engineer usually focuses on one part of a larger device or project. Finally, a person needs to be methodical and meticulous in recording test results, analysis, and design elements or much time can be lost redoing tests and procedures as well as searching for information. Michael DeSafey is a leading executive recruiter for professionals in the construction, engineering and environmental industries. Hiring now in Galveston with paid training:

CABLE TECHNICIAN INSTALLER

Q: I am over 50 and have been unemployed for the last 9 months with chronic back pain caused by spinal stenosis due to arthritis. I have just fi led for disability, but they say that takes 5-7 months for benefi ts to start; with no guarantee that I will be approved. My savings have been depleted, forcing me to take a job now and work through the pain. My most recent long term job was working for an art gallery which occasionally required light physical exertion but my boss accepted my slow pace due to my loyalty and proven work ethic over 25 years. I have recently become certifi ed to teach art in public school but I will accept almost any job for the sake of income at this point, the less physically taxing of course, the better. Do I keep my mouth shut during the interview and simply hide it as much as possible? Do I mention my chronic pain but underplay it? It has been my lifelong dream to teach one day, because it is my nature to nurture and to lift others. I am currently applying to substitute teach and have been invited to interview for that position. The hiring process takes a few weeks. In my unemployment, I currently take breaks by lying down throughout the day, although I realize I will not have the luxury to do that in a work environment. If I tell prospective employers that I have this condition, I’m afraid they will not want to bother with me when there are so many applicants without these issues. If I don’t divulge this condition it will show up in some aspect of the job eventually, i.e. in my demeanor, or in my inability to bend or need for sitting breaks. That then, juxtaposed against my worsening chronic pain places me in very strange and unique position.

-Houston, Texas Reader A: There really isn’t a right way to interview when you have this kind of health issue. You are never required to divulge that information in your interview. The fact that you are over 50 is an advantage because they don’t want to show age discrimination. If you do choose to tell your interviewer you can be more vague and simply say that you have a bad back and can’t lift very much. That really shouldn’t be an issue in this type of job, though. If you give them the name of the ailment, they will worry more and may hesitate to hire you.

Established Leader in Steel Manufacturing IS HIRING:

The one essential thing you have to do for this interview may seem very diffi cult: you have to project confi dence, capability, and a positive attitude. If you seem grumpy, sad, or negative, you really shouldn’t be around kids! The more that you project that attitude, the easier it will be for you to maintain it.

Guaranteed Overtime! Night Shift Earns an extra $1/hr Competitive Pay & Outstanding Benefits!

Substituting is a good choice too because you don’t have to accept every assignment. If you are feeling particularly bad when you are notifi ed of a class availability, you can decline and ask them to call/text you next time. You wouldn’t want to do that often, though because they would eventually stop calling you. I hope that your disability request comes through sooner than expected, and I wish you great success in landing the substitute job. Let me know how your interview goes tomorrow. -If you have any questions about interviewing, hiring, or work, I’d love to hear from you. Due to the volume of response, not every question will appear in the column, but most questions will receive an email response within 2 to 3 days.

Interview with a ...

Bicycle repairer Interviewed by Kathleen Green Greg Mackenzie Renton, Washington

What is your job? I do bicycle suspension repair and rebuilding. I also do bike repair; you don’t get into the suspension side without doing other bike repairs as well. I’ve worked in many bike shops, and I used to own one, but I’m an employee of a bike shop now. I also do all the ordering, check inventory, stock parts, schedule all the repairs, and whatever else needs to be done on the retail end. But suspension repair is how I brand myself. What does suspension repair involve? Most mountain bikes come with shock absorbers on the fork in front and often in the rear. Those shocks require maintenance, if not rebuilding, at least once a year. They might need a nitrogen charge, for example, or the seals may need maintenance every 6 months or so. It depends on use: how many hours you’re on the bike, how hard you ride, how much dirt or other stuff is in the area you ride, that sort of thing. I got into suspension work when a local distributor, which had a suspension service center, shut down. There was nobody around who really provided that service, so customers were having to send their suspension back to the manufacturer if they needed work on it. I learned what I could, and I had or got the tools I needed, and it took off from there. It just makes things easier for the customer to have service done locally.

How knowledgeable are bicycle owners about maintenance? I have pro racers who know exactly what they want done and will tell me how they want their bike set up. I also have customers who will bring in a bike and say, “I’m not sure if it needs anything done, but I’ve had it for 5 years, so….”

46

OCTOBER 19, 2018

A good part of my job is educating the customer. I use the analogy of an oil change on a car: You don’t technically have to change the oil, but the car will run better and will be less expensive in the long run if you keep up with regular maintenance. I keep spare shocks and forks on hand to use as examples, so I can show a customer how they work.

It sounds like you interact with customers quite a bit. You have to be able to talk to people. You have to be able to explain things clearly and in a way they will understand. If done right, bicycle repair is a very social job. I always say working in retail is kind of like having training in psychology: You see so many types of people, and you have to be able to deal with anyone who comes through the door. You have to make customers feel like they’re heard, pick up cues, and tailor your responses to what they’re saying. Communication is important for being able to help customers better.

What other skills do bicycle repairers need? You use math skills a lot: You have to understand very, very specific measurements. I have to understand fluid volumes and viscosity, and I have to understand and apply a basic knowledge of gas pressure—I’m always having to calculate measurements when information is unavailable. You also need manual dexterity, mechanical aptitude, and attention to detail. And you have to keep good records and know how to use spreadsheets and a computer.

Is bicycling included in your job description? I don’t get to go cycling as much as I’d like. I know I work in a bike shop, but…I work in a bike shop. It’s retail. The shop is open daily, plus weekends and evenings, although I

schedule my 40 hours for Sunday through Thursday. I’m standing almost all the time. There’s also some walking and the occasional test ride. But I’d say I spend 90 percent of my time standing.

What draws people to this occupation? I think it’s people who just really love bikes, and they get into repair. Some people open their own shop, and then maybe the shop fails—but they still love bikes, so they find someplace to work as a mechanic. For a lot of bike-shop people, it’s not so much that we consciously chose to do this; it’s that we never chose to do anything else. Nobody I know ever planned to be a professional bike mechanic. Most of them are overeducated and overqualified for what they do.

Tell me about your background. I rode my bike pretty regularly starting in about middle school, and I got into mountain biking. Bikes fall apart, so I messed around with putting them back together. Then, after I graduated from high school, I got a job in a bike shop. I didn’t really know what I was doing at first, but I kept learning more and more as my responsibilities increased. I went to community college and eventually got a 2-year degree in woodworking. But I’ve been a bike mechanic for 24 years now. In the beginning, it was just some job I had when I was 19. Then I was 24, then 34, then 40. I gave woodworking a try, twice, but I came back to bikes. And at the level I am now, it pays better to be a bike mechanic than a woodworker.

Is certification required for bicycle repairers? I have several certifications, either for specific brands or on specific components, VOL. 23 ISSUE 1163

like disc brakes. But I don’t think those certifications are what make me a professional. At a certain point, I’m going to have seen everything they can show me in a seminar or training because I’ve worked on everything that comes through the door. You have to have practical knowledge, which you get from working with good mentors at different shops and on different kinds of bikes. Everything I need to know, I learned on the job.

What are the biggest challenges for bicycle repairers? There’s a lot that’s great about the Internet, but it presents two major challenges for us. First, it makes everyone an expert. I specialize in a niche service, but I get a lot of customers who are 100 percent sure they’ve done everything right because they watched some video online. And a subset of that group is customers who assume I know exactly what the problem is the minute they walk in, and they don’t think they should have to give the socalled expert 5 minutes to take a look and see what’s going on. Second, it’s changing the industry. People don’t have to physically come into a bike shop anymore; they can find everything they need online. I’ll always have my skill set, but if there are no shops left for people to take their bikes to, what does that mean for the future of repair?

What do you like best about your job? I like problem-solving and that frustrating, awesome feeling that comes from learning something new. I like working with tools and learning about new ones; you can never have enough tools. But the best thing on the job happened about 8 years ago. Some company reps from Japan and Malaysia came to the shop and walked around. Then, one of the reps, an engineer, came over to me—I was the only mechanic at the time, because the shop had recently opened—and said, “We’ve been throughout the United States, and this is the first shop we’ve visited where all of the brakes on all of the bikes are set up correctly, with perfect smoothness.” That’s about the highest praise I could ever hope to get!

What advice do you have for aspiring bicycle repairers? Always know that you will never know everything. If you don’t know the answer, never lie to customers and say that you do. That’s the No. 1 thing people appreciate. VOL. 23 ISSUE 1163

You can always find the answer and get back to them later. There’s not much money in bike repair, and there’s definitely no glamour. But for a small group of people who do it well, it can be a lot of fun. Kathleen Green is an economist in the Office of Occupational Statistics and Employment Projections, BLS. The Five Things To ALWAYS Do When Starting a New Job By Carlton Ryan

Starting a new job is both a major challenge and a fantastic opportunity. While the first few days and weeks can be stressful, they also offer you a chance to set the right tone for your entire future there. Clearly, getting off to a good start is crucial. Here are the five things you should always do when you begin a new job. 1. TALK TO YOUR BOSS. Before jumping into your work, you need to talk with your manager about what exactly is expected of you. Being on the same page as the boss is crucial. Even if you think you know precisely what your new job entails, there will probably be some details that surprise you. As the days pass, keep your boss updated on your progress. Not only do most managers want to keep a closer eye on new employees, but you'll also need their input if you encounter any problems. 2. ASK QUESTIONS. Coworkers, your boss, members of upper management -- ask them all plenty of questions. As the new guy or gal, you're expected to be wondering about lots of things. For at least a few weeks, it will be OK if you ask a ton of questions. Asking questions will also help you form valuable connections with colleagues. As for ideas for improvement and other suggested changes, save them until later; you should just focus on learning at first.

3. BE PUNCTUAL. At the start, you absolutely must be on time. This applies not just to arriving at work, but to project deadlines as well. While later on you may have more leeway to be flexible with scheduling, you shouldn't take any chances at the beginning. Just to be on the safe side, leaving home 10 to 15 minutes early is a good idea (especially if you are unfamiliar with the route). Staying a few minutes late wouldn't hurt, either. Similarly, aim to complete tasks well before they are due. 4. LEARN THE LAY OF THE LAND. Every office has a slightly different culture. Things might not be done in the way you're used to. Even what qualifies as acceptable business attire can vary from one office to another. The best way to learn these unwritten rules is simply to watch how your colleagues behave. For example, observe their interactions with members of upper management. If you pay close attention to how everyone acts, you'll soon learn how to fit in. Soon, no one will even remember you are the newest hire. 5. WORK HARD. This one should be obvious, but in the hubbub and excitement of starting a new job, what you've been hired to do can almost be forgotten. Just remember that starting strong is crucial. If you hit the ground running, pushing yourself hard from the first minute, you'll give yourself positive momentum going forward. By gaining a reputation for being conscientious and industrious, you will win the trust of coworkers and superiors alike. Don't let the opening days at a new job go to waste. This is your big chance to establish a strong foundation for future success at your new post. Simply follow the five rules described above and you'll be on your way to an excellent start. 50 OCTOBER 19, 2018

RETIREMENT OR DEBT?

THE KEY IS SERVING

Dear Dave,

Dear Dave,

Do you think I should lower the amount I’m contributing to my 401(k) so I can pay off my house and my truck?

I just accepted my first job in sales. In your mind, what is the key to becoming an excellent salesperson?

Jamie

Bobbie

Dear Jamie,

Dear Bobbie,

If you’re following my plan, the first thing you should do is set aside a beginner emergency fund of $1,000. That’s Baby Step 1. Next comes Baby Step 2, which means paying off all your debt except for your house. This would include your car. During this time, you should temporarily stop any kind of investing and retirement contributions.

The key to becoming a great salesperson can be summed up in one simple word—serving. I’m not talking about being subservient. I’m talking about always giving 110 percent towards ensuring customers and potential customers are served well. It’s all about being proactive.

Once your mortgage is the only debt you have left, it’s on to Baby Step 3. This means you start saving money and growing your beginner emergency fund into a fully-funded emergency fund of three to six months of expenses. When that’s done, you can attack Baby Step 4—investing 15 percent of your pre-tax income for retirement. In your case, that would mean re-starting the contributions to your 401(k).

Serving means you believe in what you represent, and you’re excited about what you have to offer. It means you’re determined to give people a great experience. If an issue happens to arise, you’ll take care of it quickly and completely. You’ll do this in a way that will make them forget it ever happened.

The rest of the plan goes like this. Baby Step 5 is putting money into your kids’ college funds, if you have kids, while Baby Step 6 is putting everything you can scrape together towards paying off the house early. After that comes the real fun. Baby Step 7 is the point where you build wealth and give like crazy. It may take a little time in some cases, but following these steps will lead you to financial peace!

Really, serving is an attitude. You can pressure people if you want, but that’s going to lead to a dull and frustrating life of one-shot deals. But if you serve people well, you’ll have clients for life and they’ll send their friends and associates your way. Make helping people your first order of business, Bobbie. If you do that, you’ll never have to worry about money! —Dave
