The Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) program provides temporary benefits to people whose employment or self-employment has been lost or interrupted due to a major disaster. Your best resource for in-depth information is the Texas Workforce Commission (www.twc.state.tx.us), but JobSparx has a general overview for you.

When is DUA available? DUA is only available during the Disaster Assistance Period, which begins with the first Sunday following the date that the major disaster is declared. In our case, the Texas Workforce Commission is accepting applications through September 27, 2017 for Harris County residents. See the list below for other counties and application deadlines. Once you have gone through the application process, you have 3 weeks (21 days) to send in the necessary documents.

I work a temporary or seasonal job. Do I qualify? Yes, but only for the weeks that you would have been employed if the disaster had not occurred.

Do I apply through TWC or FEMA for benefits? DUA is available through the Texas Workforce Commission, not through FEMA. FEMA programs can be applied for through the FEMA website at www.fema.gov.

Do I need to have proof of employment to apply for DUA? Yes. Within 21 days of applying, you will need to supply proof that you were: • •

Working or self-employed at the time of the disaster Scheduled to start work on or after the date of the disaster.

The TWC website states, “If you do not send us proof of em-

ployment by the 21-day deadline, we will stop paying you DUA, and you will have to repay any benefits you received. In some cases,” they state, “we can use information in our system, such as wage records, to prove you were employed at the time of the disaster.”

Hurricane Harvey & Your Car Insurance Claim Hurricane Harvey has left a trail of destruction, one covering two states and affecting millions of people. With scores of lives lost and tens of thousands of homes were damaged or destroyed, the total loss may approach $100 billion. If your car was damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Harvey, your auto insurance might cover your loss.

Hurricane Harvey Car Insurance Tips The method for filing a car insurance claim may vary from insurer to insurer. Contact your insurance company for guidance. The following tips apply to people filing post-hurricane auto insurance claims.

1. Review your policy. If you have access to your auto insurance policy, read it to learn what it covers and what is does not. If the policy was lost or misplaced, but you know the name of your insurer, then contact the insurer to start the process. Contact numbers are published online if they are not readily available elsewhere. Also, claim agents are likely canvassing your area to help policyholders settle. 2. Document the damage. Did a tree fall on your car? Was it flood-damaged by the storm? Take pictures (if possible); your smartphone is an excellent camera and allows you to store photos. Take multiple photos inside and out as well as under the hood and in the trunk or any other out-of-the-way place.

3. Keep records. If you make repairs before the insurance agent arrives, keep your receipts. You need not only document the damage, but the repairs made. Your insurer isn’t likely to pay for repairs without documentation. 4. Maintain a list of contacts. From the first person you talk with at the insurance company and until it issues a check, keep track of the names of everyone along the way. That means recording the time and date of your conversations and what you discussed. 5. Establish text message alerts. Your insurer may keep you abreast

of your claim through a letter, phone call, or email. If offered a text message option, then take it. This alert is of particular importance for displaced individuals who aren’t sure where they’ll live this week or next. For everyone else, you’ll know the current status of your claim.

6. Ask for a rental vehicle. Without a car, life can be tough. The going gets tougher if you can’t afford to rent a vehicle while you’re having yours repaired. Fortunately, your insurer might supply a car until you get yours back. However, keep in mind that the pool of available rental cars may be extremely tight in your area due to tremendous demand. If you can, secure a vehicle from outside the affected area as this may be the fastest way to get one. The recovery process for Hurricane Harvey won’t be measured in weeks or months, but years. As the years following Hurricane Katrina, restoration to much of the area will be gradual. As for your own needs, you can hasten the process by working closely with your insurance agent. Lastly, if you dispute the claim, your insurer may allow you to contest the amount.

Even though I had no experience working in a therapy clinic, I walked in to apply, talked with the owner, and got the job. It wasn’t an easy road! A: The fi rst thing you need to realize is that you have to stand up for yourself. You will not be successful in any career if you don’t understand your own worth!! There are a lot of jobs that don’t require a resume because they simply want you to complete an application. You also can use any volunteer work that you have done to build a resume. Understand that you may need to start in a position that is not perfect so that you can prove yourself in the work environment.
