DO WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO, SO YOU CAN DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO QUESTION: I have a degree in nutrition science, but for the last 10 years I’ve worked as the food service manager in a hospital. I’m really burned out in this job, but I still want to help people. Ideally, I’d like to pursue an internship that would allow me to become a registered dietician, then open my own practice. However, the idea of having my own business terrifies me. My mom and dad run a small business, and they barely break even. Can you help me with these feelings?
There are two things you need to consider when thinking about your dream job. One is how much it will cost in terms of dollars and cents. The other is how much time it will take. I would encourage you not to take on debt to make this happen, but some thorough research in these two areas might go a long way in making you a little less fearful. Knowledge is power, and a detailed plan is essential for success. Think about this, too. I’m sure you have connections in your current job that would be very beneficial in your dream job. Talk to some of the doctors at the hospital. Tell them your dream. Some of them may be willing to refer patients or offer advice in other areas. Once you’ve crunched some numbers, and your dream has progressed to the point where you have a practical plan, start your business slowly on the side. Then, be patient while it grows to the point where you can make the jump to full-time!
ATTITUDE IS OFTEN A CHOICE QUESTION: I’m a dentist, and I own a successful practice that is debt-free. I have a great office manager and staff, and I love what I do, but I can’t stop thinking about losing team members to other practices and keeping the business successful. I feel stressed out all the time, and I’m starting to develop health issues as a result. Recently, I received an offer with another practice. It pays less than I make now, but it offers more benefits and much more time off. What do you think I should do?

ANSWER: It’s normal to have a certain amount of trepidation about opening a small business. But don’t let fear alone – whether it’s the fear of failure, or the fear of being more successful than your parents – overwhelm you and dictate your decisions.
ANSWER: I’m not a doctor, but it sounds like you’re suffering from two things — comparison and worry. You just told me you have a great office manager and staff, you’re doing work you love, and you have no debt on your business. Outside forces should not be dragging you down, man. Life is good! I think it’s your mindset, not your business or career, that needs a change. And this kind of thing starts with gratitude. Stop comparing yourself to everyone else. What does winning look like in your reality? What makes you feel happy and satisfied? What is your definition of success? Perhaps you could sit down and talk to a close friend or even a professional counselor. Often, an unbiased opinion can make us realize things that had gotten lost in the hectic, day-to-day grind. Q: Salutations, I have a bunch of questions about what to actually put on a resume. I’ll just start listing things.
PAID TRAINING!
1. I technically still work occasionally at the same company where I’ve worked since I was 16. My offi cial last day if you can call it that, was before I went off to college, but I still work there when needed. Since there were two companies, but one owner, how do I say that? 2. I did technically start going to Community College in August of 2016 but all of my credits were for a diff erent degree. In August of 2017, I decided I wanted to revert to a Latin degree. I do have close to 60 college credits but only about 30 can be applied to either degree. I think it would look bad to say I’ve been going to community college for 2 years, and I’m anticipating my associates in another year.

3. Should I have my high school stuff on there? I want to say I completed a years worth of fi ling in a week but I don’t know how. I also had to go into QuickBooks for the temp agency and input into everyone’s fi le why they were terminated. I feel like since that is quantifi able it would be nice to put on my resume; however I don’t know how to say that unless I copy and paste this entire explanation. 5. Some things on my work experience such as “Helped coordinate and schedule delivery route” were not done regularly. I was asked me to ride along with the Distribution Manager to see where he went and to write down what time he got to a certain place and how many magazines he delivered. I don’t know if it’s something I should put on my resume since I didn’t do it as often as I did other things. 6. I would also regularly go with the Distribution Manager and write how many magazines were left in a specifi c spot and how many we would put in and try to determine what the best amount of magazines to deliver to certain places. I don’t know how to say that on a resume. Sort of like #4. 7. I don’t know if I should have my “Skills” listed how I do or if I should have that many I think that is everything I have questions about. Some industrial designers focus on a particular product category. For example, some design medical equipment or work on consumer electronics products, such as computers and smart phones. Other designers develop ideas for other products such as new bicycles, furniture, house-

My family in Indiana says I should buy a cheap property there, then fix it up and sell it to get the money I need. I’m not sure how I feel about this idea. What do you think? Adam
I got laid off a couple of months ago, and I’m behind on the payments for a rental property. I found a full-time job recently, but it doesn’t provide enough income to cover my other bills and the mortgage on this property. The other day, I received an offer from someone who is willing to buy it for what’s owed on the property. I’m not sure that’s the best thing, because I owe $70,000 and it’s worth around $150,000. What do you think?

I think you’d be smart to back away from their idea. Your family loves you and wants to help, but this is a bad plan. Fixing and flipping properties is a hands-on business. There’s no way I’d try something like that from 700 miles away. It would be a nightmare!

When you take on that kind of work you need to oversee every single step of the process. You’re also keeping an eye on the help you hire to make sure they’re doing things right. Think about this, too. You can’t just find a house and expect to get a good deal. Professionals who flip houses for a living often look at dozens of different properties to buy just one. It’s not an easy way to make money, and it’s not something I would advise doing from a distance. I know it can take a while to save up cash for a down payment on a home. But don’t let a case of house fever push you into making a bad financial decision. Have you considered getting a part-time job for a while to bring in some extra cash?
You’ve got one thing right. You definitely need to get rid of the rental property. I’m not sure I’d jump at the offer you just received, but if I were in your shoes I’d slash the price way below value and sell the place. Right now you’re broke, and you’re still trying to play real estate investor. That’s not a good plan. I’d put a price tag of $100,000 on it, so you can move it fast and still see some equity in the deal. But sell it today! By doing this, you’ll have a nice chunk of cash in your pocket, and you can get something of a financial fresh start — one that includes living on a written, monthly budget and staying out of debt! —Dave
