Q: I am still trying to better my skills so that I can fi nd a job where I can succeed and do a great job. Along the same lines, I did speak with two employers on Wednesday so I will see what the outcome of that will be. In speaking with a representative of Northwest Assistance Ministry when I was at Between Jobs Ministry this week, I learned that Microsoft Offi ce classes will be starting in September (based on government income level). I told the gentleman that I may not qualify based on our income level. He asked me if I were working, and I told him no. He then told me to call and make an appointment to see what they can do for me. So I will pray on this as well. Also, the gentleman gave me a contact at NAM who deals with employment so I am call that individual as well. My goal is to study Microsoft Offi ce and practice accuracy and speed in my typing all this month so I can sign up with two temp agencies. I am going to take a Spanish test in September for Spanish lessons, too. The lessons are on Thursdays for 2 hours so that still allows me time to volunteer and focus on my job search. If I am able to start the Microsoft Offi ce classes I will defi nitely inform them of my upcoming Spanish classes as this is part of becoming more marketable for any employer. I am not giving up my volunteer work. I know it is a lot but if I plan it right and keep a schedule I believe I can do this with the aid of my Heavenly Father! The self-employed person who receives a 1099 Tax Form must personally pay those taxes on a quarterly basis. Even though they will more than likely receive more per hour than an actual employee, that evens out when employment taxes are taken into consideration. Beginning in September and October, companies are ramping up their business in preparation for holiday sales. Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and even the post-Christmas sales and returns increase the need for additional workers in many industries between the fall and the New Year. When you start your search for temporary work, look for a position that adds experience to your resume. Any additions that you can add to your list of accomplishments will be a boost. See if the company you want to work for is hiring for part time seasonal help. Even if they are not hiring for the job you ultimately want, it is a great way to get your foot in the door and make a good impression on the management. The impression you leave on your temporary employer can be the key to getting a permanent job with the company. Always treat your temporary job as respectfully as you would a full-time position, and don’t neglect your duties there just because it’s short-term. It can bring long-term benefits! Even if your side job is not in a career field that you want to go into, making and networking with new business connections through work is a boon for any job seeker. You never know how far the good impression you leave will go in finding your dream job.

I have about $36,000 in debt, not including my house. Of that amount, $30,000 is a truck that’s worth about what I owe on it, and the other $6,000 is student loan debt. I make $50,000 a year. I also have 24 EE bonds that were gifted to me that haven’t fully matured. Right now, they’re worth a combined $12,500. Should I cash those in, and use the money to pay off some of my debt, or let them fully mature before cashing them in? Also, are there any tax ramifications from cashing them in?

Everyone needs identity theft protection. Unless you’re one of these folks who have gone completely off the grid, someone out there probably has a few of your numbers. Between sloppiness on the part of consumers, and the massive data breaches that have occurred in the last few years, almost everyone has experienced, or will experience, some sort of identity theft. Unfortunately, this is today’s world.

Dear Patrick, They might be taxed, but it won’t be much to worry about. EE bonds make less than one percent, so you haven’t really earned much. Never buy those things, man. They’re a horrible investment, with an even worse rate of return. I’m glad you’re working out a plan and moving toward getting out of debt. A $30,000 truck doesn’t work with a $50,000 income. So, cash in the bonds immediately, sell the truck, and use some of the money from the EE bonds to pay off the school loans. Then, find yourself a cheap, little truck that will get you around for a few years.
