What’s so special about $1 million? Dear Dave, I’ve heard you say many times you shouldn’t buy a brand-new car unless you have a net worth of $1 million. What’s so special about a million dollars? Angela Dear Angela, In all honesty, there’s nothing particularly special about a million dollars. A brand-new car will lose about 60 percent of its value in the first four years. So, if you’re going to turn a $30,000 investment into $12,000, you’ve got to have a bunch of money. You’ve got to be in pretty great financial shape in order to absorb the blow. If your entire net worth is $100,000, and you put $30,000 of it into a vehicle that will lose 60 percent of its value, you’re just being financially and mathematically stupid. Your income is your largest and most powerful wealth-building tool. If you’re buying things that go the wrong way in terms of value, you’re not gaining wealth; you’re losing wealth. There’s really nothing special about $1 million. I could have said $2 million or $900,000, but $1 million is easy to remember. Plus, it’s nothing to sneeze at in terms of an individual’s net worth. When you lose a lot, and it’s a small percentage of a lot, you don’t have to worry so much. Dear Tiffany, Yes, it would. I’m not trying to lay a guilt trip on you, kiddo, but you’ll be trashing your mom and dad’s credit if you don’t pay the bills on time. If they co-signed for you, they’ll start getting phone calls, too, if you don’t do the right thing and pay back these loans. The truth is, your mom and dad shouldn’t have co-signed for you in the first place. There’s only one reason lenders want a co-signer, and that’s because they’re afraid the person taking out the loan won’t be able to pay back what’s owed. My goal here isn’t to beat you up, Tiffany. It’s to give you information that you—and your parents—need in order to make different, smarter decisions in the future. We all do dumb things sometimes. In the past, I did some really dumb things with very large numbers attached.

candidates all day long and want to share some advice with them: Be careful about the music on your voice mail. Last week I called a candidate to do a phone interview, and the call went to voice mail. I was blown away by the rap music with the “f” word said over and over and didn’t leave a message. She saw she had missed a call and phoned me. I was polite but told her that I didn’t believe that she was a match for the job. When she asked why, I told her that her music on voice mail was offensive and in bad taste. I told her that she needs to change it while job hunting. Please let other people know that they can ruin their chances for a job with the type of music they choose. Expletives are never acceptable. -Spring, Texas Reader

A: I’ve told them before, but maybe your letter will be a wake-up call. Candidates need to understand that we are looking at the whole person, not just the great answers they use in interviews. Q: I own a couple of small businesses and one of them is so new that it isn’t making money yet. One of the guys who works for that company has been helping out in my office recently

A: I think you should tell him to cowboy up. Does he expect you to print money? Since that’s illegal, he has to earn his own raise. He needs to present a written plan that shows a way to more than double proﬁts in 4 months. Then he needs to get scooting on the plan. He will be paid a commission on all of the new and increased business that he generates and will easily increase his salary to $60K by June if he can meet those criteria. What an ungrateful doofus! Normally I would have chatted with the receptionist a little, but for some reason I just didn’t. After sitting quietly for about 30 minutes, the receptionist got a call and spoke very quietly on the phone. When she was through, she told both of us that the recruiter had just hired someone, and our interviews were cancelled. I was stunned! I was perfectly qualified for the position, and my phone interview went very well. I have thought about this a lot, and I think that the receptionist decided against us – probably because we were not being interactive. She must have thought I was rude. A: Probably not. You are right that the receptionist has a lot of power when a candidate is rude or doesn’t act nice before the interview, but you’re wrong if you think that the recruiter was able to get feedback that quickly. Here’s what I think happened: the recruiter hired someone and was short-sighted and rude. Even though he made a hire, he should have interviewed both of you because he set the appointment with you, and because he never knows

when he’ll need you! Who knows if the last hire will be there in 2 weeks? The receptionist was not trained to be discreet, and she just blurted out what the recruiter said. She should have been more polite. I’m sorry that you’ve let this bother you for so long, because I was very impressed with your manners and behavior when I met you.
