In my plan, Baby Step 3 is when I advise people to save up three to six months of expenses in a fully loaded emergency fund. This is set aside and not touched for any reason other than a true emergency. It’s not a Bahamas fund or a new living room furniture fund. It’s an emergency fund. It’s not an investment or fun money; it’s insurance. Think of your emergency fund as a protective barrier that keeps you from going into debt or cashing out investments when life throws bad things your way.
No! The reason is you can never be assured that you’re going to pay it off in five years. If you go into it with that mindset, then you’re basically saying you can predict the future will be exactly how you want it to be. That’s pretty naïve. Your future will never be what you think it will be. It’s either going to be better or worse, but your future will never turn out exactly the way you plan for it to be.
How do you decide where to land in the three to six month range of expenses? That depends on how much risk your household has. If there’s only one income in the equation, you have more risk, so you should skew things toward six months. Being self-employed or a commissioned salesperson is also a situation where this would be true. If there are two incomes, and both come from steady, dependable sources, you could fall into the middle of that range or even more toward the three-month side. Make sure your emergency fund is easily accessible too. A simple money market account with check-writing privileges works fine. You want to make sure you can get your money quickly when the need arises! —Dave

If you can’t buy a home with cash, you need the stability of a 15-year, fixed rate mortgage in your life. We’re living in the lowest mortgage interest rate environment in about 50 years. I saw a 3.02 percent 15-year fixed rate mortgage just the other day. For those of you who have not refinanced, if you’re staying in your home or you’re sitting on an adjustable rate, this is a great time to change that. Still, people are sitting around yawning like these kinds of rates are going to be around forever. It’s gone on for a while now, but don’t let that fool you into thinking those kinds of rates are normal. They’re not going to last forever. No, I would never under any circumstances take an adjustable rate mortgage. Was that unclear? I hope not! —Dave

If you’re selling a product or service, the number one question that you need to ask yourself is “What can I do for my customer?” If you can answer this question, and present the answers when you interact with potential clients, you’re as good as gold.
If you want to close inbound sales like the best salesperson ever, follow these tips:
Be Relevant.
Be Knowledgeable.
Before you approach any potential buyer, you need to understand how to be relevant to his or her profession. Make sure that you do your research, and be ready to answer any possible questions that the professionals may have. Dig into his or her own background so you have ground to stand on, and are able to converse with your potential client as though you work next to him or her. Relevancy is a vital tool that should live in any salesman’s toolbox.
This may sound like a given, but you might be surprised to find that many of your competitors are walking into sales calls completely unprepared. Showcase your knowledge by means of being helpful. You may be selling product X, but if your company also manufactures product Y, and the latter sounds like a better fit for your client once you speak to him or her, offer up the alternative suggestion. The client may not buy anything right away, but if you plant the seed of being knowledgeable and helpful, your prospect will likely put you at the top of his or her mind when it’s time for a purchase to be made.
Be a Team-Player. Sure, it looks pretty on a resume, but if you can’t put your teamwork skills into play in the real world, the words you have on paper don’t matter. Keep in mind that other departments and teams in your company have insider knowledge on your clients, too. Work with the marketing folks to learn more about the psychology of your potential client. Be Open to Learning. Nobody wants to be stumped by a potential buyer, but it’s going to happen. Remember that there’s always something to be learned from everyone, and it’s okay not to know an answer. Show that you’re an authority on your subject matter, even when you’re faced with questions that you can’t answer, by handling the opposition with grace. Let the client know that he or she has asked a great question, and that you will check with your

colleagues before committing to an answer. Dig in and find out as much as you can about why your potential client has come up with a question that you weren’t prepared to answer. Why are they asking this question? What would be the optimal answer? How will they use the information you give them to make a purchasing decision. A: It’s
simple: you ha ve to already b e a s k i l l e d w o r k e r. F o r e x a m p l e : they would like for you to be an electrician with certifica tions and a number of years of experience. You couldn’t just sa y tha t you wanted to be a skilled worker and ha ve them g rant you entr y. Skilled workers are ca tegorized as workers who ha ve specific job skills and on-the-job training. In addition, they could have attended a trade school or college to be certified in their field. Welders, mechanics, plumbers, electricians, HVAC technicians, and law enforcement are skilled workers. There are man y, man y job openings f or skilled workers, but man y of the jobs are unfilled because not enough people have been entering these fields. How do I get a job in HR? I truly enjoy your session in the ma gazine. I would like to ha ve your professional opinion on m y resume. However, the opinion is not rela ted on how it is written. It is about my professional profile because I have had many experiences in different areas and my education s t a r t e d w i t h B a c h e l o r ’s I n d u s t r i a l Design (Colombia), follow by an MBA in management for development (Colombia), and I completed my MBA - Human Resources in the US last September. A: You ha ve a lot of experience, but little of it is in HR. It is easy to start as a recruiter or generalist fresh out of college, but companies seldom take chances on people who are totally inexperienced. It might be best for you to contact staffing agencies and professional placement a gencies (headhunters.) There is an element of sales in an y of these positions, and you ha ve to be prepared to learn a lot!! I know that you said that you didn’t want my opinion on the way your resume is written, but here it is anyway. You start with a philosophical statement, and you need to get rid of it. It is g ramma ticall y incorrect with disagreement of subject and verb, and It will turn of f more recruiters than it attracts. We spend about 6 seconds looking at a resume, and tha t one sentence will get you d e l e t e d i n a h u r r y. T h e s u m m a r y is unnecessar y, but if you want to include it, it should be about half as long. It looks like you threw all of your jobs into one ba g and shook i t . Yo u m i g h t t r y s u b m i t t i n g y o u r resume to an agency that places H R p r o f e s s i o n a l s . WAGE PREMIUMS FOR A MASTER’S DEGREE In some occupations, you’re likely to need a master’s degree to qualify for entry-level jobs. In others, a master’s degree may not be required, but having one might lead to advancement or higher pay. This article focuses on several career fields in which workers often earn more with a master’s degree than with abachelor’s degree. These career fields are discussed in the following sections:
Business • Education • Healthcare & Social Service • STEM These areas are discussed in order of the number of degrees conferred, from most to least, according to 2012–13 data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).

Y
ou might want to earn a master’s degree for the potential
increase in earnings it may deliver. But there’s more to going to grad school than the chance for extra income, especially because the payoff varies by occupation. In 2013, the median annual wage for fulltime workers ages 25 and over whose highest level of education was a master’s degree was $68,000, compared with $56,000 for those whose highest level was a bachelor’s degree—a $12,000 a year wage premium. Not all workers earn a premium. In some occupations, workers with a master’s degree earned about the same as, or even less than, those with a bachelor’s degree.

Securities, Securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents had the biggest wage premium of any of these occupations: workers who had a master’s degree earned a wage that was nearly 90 percent higher than that for workers with a bachelor’s degree. Many of these sales agents earned a master’s degree in business administration (MBA), which may be required for highlevel jobs. Other business occupations not shown in the table had wage premiums for a master’s degree, including accountants and auditors, general and operations managers, and human resources workers. However, in some business occupations, having a master’s degree may not pay a premium. Training and development managers with a master’s degree, for example, had a 6percent lower median wage than did these workers with a bachelor’s degree.
EDUCATION More than 1 out of every 5 master’s degrees was awarded in education in 2012–13. And the payoff for these degrees was usually relatively high. (See table 2.) Education administrators had the highest percentage wage premium, with 44 percent higher wages for master’s degree holders than for bachelor’s degree holders. The wage

HEALTHCARE & SOCIAL SERVICE The fast-growing fields of healthcare and social service were common for master’s degree awarded during 2012–13. Many occupations in these fields had wage premiums for a master’s degree. (See table 3) Physician assistants with a master’s degree had a median wage that was 44 percent higher than that of workers with a bachelor’s degree—the biggest wage premium of the occupations in table 3. Prospective workers might want to get a master’s degree anyway, and not just for a higher wage: By 2020, the few remaining bachelor’s degree programs that prepare workers for this occupation will be phased out. Other occupations in this group that are not shown in table 3 had a wage premium for master’s degree holders over bachelor’s degree holders, but the proportion of workers with a master’s degree varied. For example, nearly 80 percent of nurse practitioners and nurse midwives had a master’s degree, while only about 6 percent of these workers had a bachelor’s. In contrast, about 7 percent of clinical laboratory technologists and technicians had a master’s degree, while more than 40 percent had a bachelor’s.
