The City of Houston Receives National Recognition for its Summer Jobs Program Thursday, January 22, 2015

Six months after a crowd of staﬀ and interns involved in the City of Houston’s Summer Jobs Program (SJP) gathered at Moody Park to celebrate the culmination of months of hard work with an end of summer graduation ceremony, the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ (USCM) recognized Houston as the National Summer Youth Jobs Challenge Large City award recipient. On January 22, 2015, Mayor Parker received the award on behalf of the City of Houston at the USCM’s 83rd Annual Winter Meeting Plenary Breakfast in Washington, D.C. The USCM National Summer Youth Jobs Challenge is a program that urges mayors from across the nation to create innovative and longlasting partnerships with local businesses and organizations with the hopes of ensuring our youth have a meaningful summer job experience. This past year, the City of Houston launched its SJP, opening its doors to more than 450 youth in the Houston area, ages 16-21,to participate in a unique summer internship opportunity that placed participants in 14 City departments in more than 140 worksites across the city. The program was initiated by a $1.5 million commitment from City Council to establish a youth summer employment initiative and was administered through a partnership with the HoustonGalveston Area Council, Workforce Solutions, SER-Jobs for Progress, Houston Area Urban League, METRO and community volunteers. To participate in the SJP, Houston area youth had to complete a thorough application and go through a multi-level structured interview process. Once selected, interns were required to complete a 40hour job readiness training workshop at the George R. Brown Convention Center that covered topics ranging from ﬁnancial literacy and work etiquette to the importance of diversity and communication in the workplace. As a result of the program, 130 youth opened new bank accounts. “SJP provides tremendous potential for our youth and city, and its investment in our future promotes engaged, inspired and empowered young professionals,” said Mayor Parker. “Participants gained valu-

able knowledge and insight, moral support, contacts, experience and direction, all essential components in their long-term development.” Interns were assigned based on their interests and proximity to work locations to ensure a more successful experience. “Working with the Houston Police Department has and will continue to give me the knowledge that I need to pursue my career. It will also help me become more aware of my surroundings and what I need to do to help others,” said Gabriela Quintanilla, a SJP graduate. This community-based initiative is important because it displays a new standard for creating and maintaining key partnerships in our community to invest in our youth and contributes to the success of our city’s future workforce by exposing youth to real-world work experience. You are meeting a stranger or a few strangers who by virtue of being on the other side of the table have the upper hand. You literally have to present yourself to them. You have to make a good first impression without trying too hard. You have to show your past accomplishments without being too aggressive, too pushy or too desperate. By preparing yourself for a job interview, you will give yourself a positive image and a competitive edge. Here are four quick steps to prepare for your next job interview. PRACTICE GREETING WITH POSITIVE ATTITUDE Greeting seems to be simple. Just say “Hi” and shake your hands. But, if you want to land a job, you better learn how to greet and shake hands properly. The best strategy to enter your interview room is to maintain a positive attitude and a friendly smile. In Eastern culture, it may be rude to look into others’ eyes. However, in Western culture, direct eye contact conveys confidence and acknowledgement. Extend your hand and have a nice firm handshake. Not a hard squeeze on the other person’s hand because it will make the other person feel uncomfortable and awkward. The general rule is to shake hands with a matching level of energy. If your interviewer has high energy, you can shake a little firmer and longer than usual. If your interviewer has low energy, you just have a nice smooth handshake. HIGHLIGHT YOUR MATCHING SKILL SETS Discuss your past work experience or relevant skills that you can apply to this job. Show the interviewer that you are more than your resume on paper. When the interviewer asks a question, answer that question. Don’t beat around the bush. Be open, honest and straight-forward. Don’t talk non-stop, and don’t keep silent for minutes. If you don’t have an answer for a technical question, don’t make up facts and figures to support your points. Tell him that you would love to have an opportunity to find out the answers. ASK INTELLIGENT QUESTIONS THAT ARE RELEVANT Please do not ask silly questions such as the following. Does your company pay for my parking or bus fare? How many vacation days do I get per year? Do you pay for health and dental care? How about day

care for my kids? These questions should be things that you will manage after the employer is giving you a job oﬀer. If you want that job, ﬁnd a way to make it work. Instead, ask intelligent questions that are relevant within 3 months. For example, what are your top priority projects in the next 3 months? Who are the competitors in the marketplace? That job required traveling and was burden leaving my family. Now after just a few months, I’m laid off and back where I started. Should I just cut my losses and go to work as a driver with a friend or continue looking for work? Frustrated in Humble -Humble, Texas Reader A: I understand why you are frustrated!! It may be hard to look for a job while you are working, but you need to keep your options open for the job that you really want. Is this driving position one where you’ll be home every night? If it isn’t, you’ll be missing your family again. Weigh everything carefully, but I would take the driving job while I looked for the perfect job. Good luck. Q: I first found a job as an auto

mechanic, but I just wasn’t cutting the mustard. I knew physical labor was super fatiguing for me, and I didn’t have 100% to give. After 6 months, my boss pointed out that I most certainly was not passionate about fixing cars, and cut me loose. Over the next 2 years or so, I realized I AM passionate about IT, networking, communication, computers, and music. I next built servers for 6 months and left for a piddly insignificant reason. Next I was a parttime woodworking assistant. That was a 40 mile commute but kept me from sinking. I found a closer job at a smallish warehouse, saved some money, but stayed less than a year and left to look for something better. I found my 3rd job as a garage door guy. You can’t spend money you don’t have with them like you can with a credit card, but you’ve still got to budget carefully and give a name to every single penny of your income. Otherwise, you can still overspend. When I made the decision to get intentional with my money, I just used cash. It’s hard to spend it when you don’t have any on you. It’s a tough thing, I know, but you have to make a conscious decision to start living differently. You have to get mad at the things that steal your money a dollar or two at a time, and you have to put your foot down. Try looking at your life as a whole, not a moment at time. All the moments you’re living right now will have either a positive or negative effect on your future. I decided I wanted the greater, long-term good, so I gave up on the short-term stuff.

In your mind, what’s the biggest thing a family can live without when it comes to getting control of your money and living on a budget?

Dear Will, On a regular, day-to-day basis, I think maybe the biggest and best thing you can eliminate is eating out. There are always the shiny things people can do without. Sometimes people sell a fancy car or boat, and get rid of a $600-a-month payment right off the bat. But it’s really not a good idea to be eating out when you’re broke. It really adds up. I love a good restaurant, and I’ve got nothing against the industry. The problem, though, is that lots of people are struggling to pay their bills or set aside something for retirement because they’re eating out all the time. Most folks simply don’t realize how much money they throw away by heading to the drive-through for lunch or going out to dinner “once in a while.” I want people to enjoy life, and a great part of that can be going out and having a meal with your family and friends. But if you’re experiencing financial issues, the only time you should see the inside of a restaurant is if you’re working there! —Dave
