If your resume is the cake, your cover letter is the icing. Jane Anderson
Cover letter writing is almost as important a skill for a job seeker to learn as resume writing. The cover letter accompanies the resume at all times as the primary support document. Whether you use traditional mail, email, faxing, or another type of electronic submission, this should always be sent with the resume. There are, of course, other tools you’ll use when job seeking. Your cover letter and resume come first of course, followed by follow-up letters, thank-you letters for after the interview, references, and job acceptance letters. If you have good cover letter writing skills, and good resume writing skills, the other written tools should be a snap to compose. Your goal in this is to get the attention of the hiring manager, just as it is with resume writing. The method and format are a little different however. Your resume will cover all, or most of your professional career, and will be from one to two pages. Your cover letter will be a very brief page serving as an introduction to the resume. Cover letter writing style must be direct, to the point, and able to grab the attention of the reader quickly, with a goal of making the reader want to read the attached resume. Many people, when engaged in this type of writing, have a tendency to say too much. Good cover letter writing is short and punchy, and will take two or three key points from the resume and emphasize them. The old adage “tell them what you are going to tell them, tell them, and then tell them what you told them” holds true in both resume writing and cover letter writing. As an example, let’s assume that you are a materials handling manager for a defense contractor, seeking another position. In your line of work the buzz words are MRP, lean manufacturing, ISO 9000, and cost savings. Your writing efforts should reflect these

A: Take a job. There have to be other ways to finance your degree without cheating the system and being unethical.
A: Congratulations! You worked hard and now you are at the brink of a whole new life for yourself. I actually understand why you want to stay at home for a few more months, and you should be able easily to explain it to your parents. (After all, you know them better than I do!!) You want to feel secure in your new company and with your new job before you venture out on your own. HOWEVER, you are going to have to pay to stay where you are now. It might not be as much as you would pay for an apartment, but it has to be substantial enough that it hits you in the pocket. Ask your friends how much money they are paying for rent, utilities, furniture, and incidentals. When you are ready to leave the nest, you will be able to budget more accurately if you have this information.

My wife and I have just started getting on track with our money. We have $2,000 in savings, and the only debt we have is our house and two cars. I work in the oil and gas industry and make about $180,000 a year, but things are pretty volatile right now. We’re upside down on both vehicles, and we owe $39,000 on one and about $48,000 on the other. Under the circumstances, should we go ahead and build a fully funded emergency fund or work on paying off the cars?

This is a good question. It sounds like you guys Kendall have made good progress, but now one of you is running out of steam. That’s okay. Getting out of Dear Kendall, debt and staying out of debt can be a tough road. Are you kidding me? Sell the cars, dude! For one thing, cars go down in value. The second thing is I don’t like debt of any kind. I don’t really like borrowing for a house even, but I tolerate it as long as you use a 15-year, fixed rate mortgage with payments that are no more than a fourth of your take-home pay. I mean, it’s a much larger purchase.
You need to go to Kelly Blue Book’s website right now, and find out what your cars are really worth. Then, put them on the market as a private sale. You’ll get thousands more selling them that way than you will at a dealership. You’ll have to talk to a local credit union or bank for a small loan You can get a great car for $15,000 to $20,000 to cover the difference, plus a little bit more so dollars. Depending on where you live, a good home you guys can get a couple of little beaters to drive for a while. can cost you 10 times that or more. Still, the best way to build wealth and have a highquality financial life is to not be in debt. You’re never going to win with money in the long term if you can’t learn to delay pleasure. That’s the bottom line. Personal finance is about controlling the person you see when you look in the mirror.
But man, you’ve got close to $100,000 in car debt hanging over your heads. That’s a disaster! I want you to take a moment and think about how things would be without these stinking car payments. Your lives would change completely!

The City of Houston will host its third annual citywide Hackathon at the Houston Technology Center on May 16-17. The Hackathon promotes collaboration across government and technology communities, engages Houston’s citizen technologists to improve government and provides a platform for citizens to share innovative ideas with City decision makers. More than 200 software developers, data analysts and other civic-minded innovators developed creative and useful solutions to City and community issues at last year’s Hackathon. “The Hackathon is a great way for Houstonians with technology skills to give back to the community,” said Jeff Reichman, one of the Hackathon organizers. “Our city is responsible for so many things. Whether you are interested in public health, animal control, libraries or potholes, there is a place for you at the Hackathon.” The City and its nonprofit partner, Open Houston, an open data advocacy group, are engaging community members to brainstorm and program potential projects
