Are You Interviewing for a

“Unicorn Job”? Sometimes you have to wonder what employers are thinking when they take forever to decide who to hire. I was recently quoted in a Wall Street Journal article about the Six Month Job Interview. It seems that some employers or hiring managers have become so picky that they seek someone who just doesn’t exist at the price they are willing to pay. One of my clients, Kaitlynn got caught up in this kind of lengthy interview craze with a major retailer. She was a product developer and after 3 interviews that took months to arrange, the employer asked her to create a new product marketing plan for the retailer. She was told she’d present it to the CEO and senior executives. Being at the mercy of the potential employer, she spent weeks creating a new product line. The hiring manager later told her it was among the best they’d seen, but the company had decided after all of this effort to not hire her or anyone else. Unfortunately, this happens. There are companies that will make you jump through all these hoops and take your ideas, but not offer you the job. What really happened in this situation is starting to crop up and become a hiring issue.

By Robin Ryan, Bestselling Author of 60 Seconds & You’re Hired

The employer is really looking for a “Unicorn”. Yes, that lost creature that doesn’t exist. That’s why we call it a “Unicorn Job”. So what is that? That’s a position where the hiring manager is demanding too many things that no one human being can do at the price they are willing to pay.

How do you know if it’s a “Unicorn Job” you are chasing? Here are some clues to consider: 1. The recruiter loves you but he or she can’t quite get you in front of the hiring manager because the employer says you lack….”something” usually industry experience, or management expertise - SOMETHING. 2. After 3 OR 4 interviews, the company wants more face time. Some candidates have gone through 13 interviews with two executives competing for the job and in the end the company said they wanted part of each person and hired no one. 3. The job description encompasses too many specific requirements around industry/technical skills AND numerous soft skills that would be very difficult to find in one person. 4. You’ve met several people and had a few interviews. Then, they want you to do a big time-consuming presentation. 5. It’s taking over 3 MONTHS after the initial interview and the employer has not made a decision.

What do you do if you figure it’s a Unicorn Job?

Start looking for another position to apply to and let this one go. The employer is at fault here. The hiring manager wants a perfect fit person who just doesn’t exist. Best option is for you to actively keep applying elsewhere, so you can land a real job.

HOUSTON NEWS MITSUBISHI HEAVY INDUSTRIES AMERICA RELOCATES HEAD OFFICE TO HOUSTON, TEXAS Further Strengthening Ties with Customers of MHI Group Companies in North America

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and local dignitaries celebrate opening of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America HQ in Houston, Texas (Photo: Business Wire) HOUSTON-- On May 3, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America, Inc. (MHIA), a Group company overseeing the business of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) in North America, commenced full-scale operations at its newly relocated Head Office in Houston, Texas, following a move from its previous base in New York.

Houston is a hub for many of our customers, and this move helps us to better support their businesses. I am confident that MHIA’s new Head Office will take a strong lead in expanding our business in North America and enable the MHI Group to contribute to the economic and social development of Texas and the entire region.”

MHIA held a reception at Rice University today to mark the occasion in the presence of guests including The Honorable Greg Abbott, Governor of Texas.

Texas is home to a high concentration of MHI’s customers in the most robust and growing areas of its business, including environmental systems, chemical plants and compressors. Relocating MHIA’s Head Office to the state will enable more efficient business operations oriented to the local market.

Present at the reception, MHI President & CEO Shunichi Miyanaga offered the following remarks: “I am delighted that we have been able to set up a new base in Houston to better serve our customers and oversee our Group operations in North America. As a city with a heavy concentration of cuttingedge industries, Houston holds great promise as a key driver 46 of America’s MAY 13, 2016economic development long into the future.

Welcoming MHIA to Texas, Governor Abbott commented: “Texas is home to around 1,200 MHI Group employees and we are honored that they have chosen Houston for their U.S. headquarters. In Texas, free enterprise flourishes thanks to our low taxes, reasonable regulations and right-to-work laws, and VOL. 21 ISSUE 1039

I look forward to Texas’ continued growth as a North American hub for global trade and investment.” Bob Harvey, President and CEO of Greater Houston Partnership, who assisted MHIA’s move to Houston and co-hosted today’s event, commented: “The Partnership applauds MHIA’s commitment to growing jobs and investment. As a global trade and manufacturing hub, Houston is well positioned to serve as the location for MHIA’s headquarters.” The decision to shift MHIA’s Head Office from New York to Texas enables the company to focus more on its customer base and bottom line, as a way of achieving MHI Group’s 2015 Medium-Term Business Plan targets as early as possible.

plants of MHI Compressor International Corporation (MCO-I) – the American subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Compressor Corporation (MCO), an MHI Group company – and Mitsubishi Caterpillar Forklift America Inc. (MCFA), the American business unit of Mitsubishi Nichiyu Forklift Co., Ltd. The surrounding area is also home to the Head Office of Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation America, Inc. (MITAC-A) and the sales & service bases of MHIA’s Environmental & Chemical Plant Division and Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Americas, Inc. (MHPSA). MHI’s Oil & Gas Business Development Department also has a base in Houston, meaning the MHI Group as a whole now accounts for 1,200 jobs across the State of Texas. Going forward, MHIA will further strengthen its ties with these various bases. MHIA President & CEO Kenji Ando said: “As we launch operations at our new Head Office, I would like to express our sincere appreciation to the city of Houston, the state of Texas, and everyone who cooperated in making this possible. I hope that in the years ahead, our new Head Office enhances our network in Texas and across North America, supports the expansion of our product businesses, and contributes to this important region’s ongoing development.” MHI has had business dealings in the United States for decades, initially by exporting ships. In the 1960’s the company introduced new products like civil aircraft to the market, and established MHIA as a local subsidiary in Chicago in 1979. The MHIA office moved to New York in 1985 and today, from its new home in Houston, provides corporate functions to local MHI Group subsidiaries in more than 100 locations across 30 states spanning a wide range of businesses including chemical plants, transportation systems, corrugating machinery, machine tools, tire machinery, small business aircraft and more. The U.S. ranks No.1 in terms of MHI Group sales posted by any single country outside Japan. Following the relocation of MHIA’s Head Office to Houston, the company will now set down deeper roots in this important city and undertake business operations more dynamically than ever before.

cases, it’s required. Auctioneers in more than half the States need to be licensed, which usually requires completing a State-approved training program or apprenticeship, having a high school diploma or GED, and passing a written exam and criminal background check.

Norman is an auctioneer in West Point, Nebraska. His fastpaced oratory builds excitement, encourages bids, and lets him sell a large number of items in a short amount of time.

Auctioneers who sell land, houses, or other buildings anywhere in the country must also have a valid real estate license.

How did he learn to speak, and sell, so quickly? Auctioneering school, says Norman, is what taught him the tonguetwisting tricks of the trade. Chanting—the method of speaking auctioneers use—requires clarity, speed, and rhythm. It’s something most auctioneers learn through formal training.

After they’re qualified for the job, some auctioneers take the title of colonel. This practice dates back to the Civil War, when only military colonels were allowed to auction off the spoils of war.

A small number of schools throughout the country offer auctioneering programs. These programs typically last a few weeks to a few months. Students learn breathing and voice techniques and perform practice drills to increase their speed and precision. They might also study subjects such as ethics, public speaking, advertising, and auction law.

Now, as then, almost anything can be sold at auction. Art, machinery and equipment, and livestock are just a few of the items traded in this way. Some auctioneers specialize in one or more types of products; Norman’s specialty is antiques and consignments.

Apprenticeships are another way for auctioneers to hone their skills. By working with an experienced auctioneer, apprentices learn firsthand how the job is done.

Norman has been an auctioneer for 20 years, and he’s learned a lot in the process. But he didn’t always know he wanted auctioneering as a career. “I started off in farming,” he says. “I went to local livestock auctions, and I became interested through that.”

bangs the gavel—indicating a winning bid—and up comes the next item for sale. When not on the auction block, Norman acts as a bid spotter, or ringman. “When we work as ringmen, we’re ‘catching’ the bids,” he says. “If someone’s interested in buying an item, we watch for them to give a signal.” A signal might be a raised paddle or some other sign of acceptance, like a nod. Then Norman brings the bid to the attention of the auctioneer working as the bid caller on the podium. Norman and a colleague take turns spotting or calling bids throughout the auction.

or employment data specifically on auctioneers. But according to the National Auctioneers Association, auctioneers’ earnings vary considerably. Most are paid on commission. For example, they might take home 10 or 15 percent of the total proceeds from an auction. The association also reports that many auctioneers work part time. Norman works full time, although his hours are fewer on days when there isn’t an auction. “I work mostly Monday through Friday,” he says. But like many auctioneers, he also works weekends—and evenings, when necessary. A lot of what Norman and his colleagues do happens before the auction begins. “In our case,” says Norman, “we go to people’s houses and haul stuff in. We also set up the auction.” Moving large items means that Norman sometimes needs physical strength, but not all auctioneers do heavy lifting. Auctioneers are versatile in the work that they do. Some, like Norman, help to set up and pick up after the auction. Others might appraise or repair items, organize pieces by type or price and put them into lots to be sold together, or create a catalog of what’s for sale. Still others might do paperwork or process sales, but Norman says that many auction houses have office staff to perform those clerical tasks. Advertising and marketing are usually a big part of an auctioneer’s job. Identifying and attracting prospective buyers— and sellers—is critical for generating business. During an auction, Norman stands on a podium or raised platform, called an auction block, in front of a crowd of people. He rapidly describes the item or items for sale, and the bidding begins. As higher and higher bids come in from the crowd, Norman acknowledges each in turn, chanting all the while. Down

But to truly understand what it’s like to be an auctioneer, Norman says there’s nothing like firsthand experience. “Go to an auction,” he says. “See how it’s handled and what goes on.” Doing this, he says, will help people decide if it’s the career for them. “It’s a fun job,” says Norman, adding that for him, meeting people is the most interesting part. But dealing with

Norman Abrahams might have something to sell you—but you’ll have to compete to buy it so many people also means being able to control a crowd. In the excitement, noise levels can escalate and distract from the bidding. “People come to the auction and get to visiting,” says Norman. It’s his job to curb conversation, while at the same time creating a fun and energetic atmosphere that draws people into the bidding. Besides, when Norman’s on the block, auction goers need to pay attention. If they don’t, what they want might be going, going…gone!

Grownup Internships: Create Opportunity Where None Exists by Joseph Terach

One of the most creative job search techniques, particularly in a soft job market like the one we’re in, is to offer yourself as an unpaid intern. I’m not talking only to traditional collegeaged experience-seekers; I’m suggesting that you — a seasoned professional — consider leasing yourself for free or for a modest stipend. I can already hear your negative reaction: “I’m not working for free! Are you aware that I’ve led several blue-chip companies and startups over the years? Look at this A-list of clients and ‘companies worked for’ on my resume! Not to mention I was pulling down a hefty six-figure salary only a few months ago! And now I’m expected for work for nothing? Sorry. No can do. I’d rather stay unemployed!” And you may get your wish. The Huffington Post has reported that recent work experience (meaning any former employment held within the last six months) ranks high among the factors m ost likely to net you a new gig. And the longer you’ve been out of work, the harder it is to find another job. And countless studies, including this one from The New York Times, have shown that knowing or getting to know those who work where you want to work is the single best way to land a job there yourself. With this in mind, a grownup internship, as mortifying as it may seem, may provide you with the perfect opportunity to a) get valuable experience now and b) make friends in all the right places. How Does a Grownup Internship Work? In college, your career center or academic department maintained a database of internship opportunities from companies hungry for young talent. The traditional intern was seen as green, raw, and more than willing to pay whatever dues necessary to ensure a future quality of life. In turn, the hiring company promised to provide such innocents with a general overview of its MAY 13, 2016 52 reason for being, along with exposure to its particular working environment.

Fast-forward 20 years. You’re not in college anymore (sigh), and there’s no active and accessible list of internships for you to look up. And here’s the kicker: grownup internships don’t readily exist. It’s up to you to create one. Sound like a lot of work? Well, it is. What lies ahead is no simple task. But keep in mind that the very process of taking time to zero in on the work you want and finding a place where you can do that work goes a long way to ensure you’ll walk away from the internship experience with a new set of skills, plus new contacts who will attest to your abilities, professionalism and entrepreneurial spirit. The Nuts and Bolts The chief benefit of creating your own internship is that it can be whatever and wherever you want it to be. Remember: anything is possible — and negotiable! There are three main steps involved in landing a grownup internship: Step 1: Extensive Research Conduct research to figure out what you want to do and where you want to do it. Locate and talk to people in your desired field, research companies on LinkedIn, read industry trades and company news reports. Find the companies that are doing what you want to do. Who’s investing in the technologies and markets that get you excited? What type of organization feels like the right fit for you? Which companies do you have an “in” with and/or which seem progressive enough to see the value in a non-traditional intern? Try to identify 5 to 10 tier-one companies that most interest you. (A longer list may prove unmanageable.) With a target list of companies in hand, arrange informational interviews with key people at the organizations you’ve identified. Read company press releases and any other intelligence you can get your hands on. Attend job fairs and other events where company reps will be in attendance — then make sure to meet them.

Your job at this stage is to gather as much intelligence as possible to understand the company’s short- and long- term objectives, its strengths and challenges. (Ultimately, you’ll help solve those challenges.) You’ll also want to figure out who the best person is for you to contact. In 95% of cases, it won’t be the HR director, but rather a department head in the area where you’d like to work. A word of caution: When you meet with people inside the company, you’ll want to introduce yourself and your background, ask questions and, when the time is right, present your concept of an internship. Some folks may deem your proposal odd, but that just means you’ve come up with a truly unique solution to get out of your unemployment status. Remember, every new idea received a raised eyebrow at the start. Step 2: The Proposal Now that you know more about the company and the right person to contact, it’s time to write and deliver your proposal. Beginning with an executive summary, a powerful proposal should not only clearly communicate what you want, but also address the company’s need(s) head-on. Your reader should get a crystal-clear picture of how you’ll be spending your time, what it will cost them to bring you on board (in terms of resource and time allocation, physical space and stipend, if any) and what you hope to accomplish that will help the company solve particular problem or take adVOL.a21 ISSUE 1039 vantage of an untapped opportunity.

Make it clear what the payoff will be: With your 10, 20 or 30 years of relevant experience and skills, you can make their business stronger, stretch their dollars further and/or increase revenue. More caution: Make sure the person to whom you send your internship proposal is sufficiently high up in the organization; junior employees may feel threatened and do their best to derail your efforts. Step 3: Cash In The ultimate treasure at the end of the rainbow is, hopefully, a paid position, contingent upon you having sufficiently met the internship goals agreed to by you and your supervisor. In the ideal scenario, your internship proposal would stipulate the specifics of such an arrangement, but in all reality, there will likely be no such guarantee in place. Rather, you’ll need to excel in the internship so much that the employer can’t imagine not hiring you. Still, while there’s no guarantee that you’ll get a job offer following your internship, no one can take away the experience and contacts you’ll make in the process. In Summary A grownup internship holds benefits for all involved. For you, it means new skills, new knowledge and (ideally) a paid gig. For the employer, it will means experienced help, the ability to test-drive a potential employee and the opportunity to save money at a time when companies are reluctant to bring on full-time staff. A grownup internship can be a powerful career move. (Like this thought? Tweet it!) It can have a direct and positive impact on your job prospects and facilitate a career change. As an experienced professional, you will have proven yourself as a valuable entity (more so than a less experienced rival), and you will therefore be in a better position to negotiate successfully for post-internship paid employment or whatever else you’re seeking. Can I Negotiate? Dear Dave, I’ve had a judgment filed against me for an old, unpaid medical bill. The original amount was $2,500, but now it has increased to $3,200. Can I negotiate this with the lawyer? I’ve asked him for a detailed statement of the account several times, but all I’ve gotten is a payment booklet.

payment in full. At this point, you’ve just got to do something to get off the conveyor belt! —Dave

Annuities for Long-Term Retirement? Dear Dave,

Bill

Are annuities good for long-term retirement?

Dear Bill,

Quincy

When it comes to paying off bills or debt, you should always pay what’s owed if you have the money. There’s a moral, as well as legal, responsibility involved. That being said, if you don’t have $3,200, offer him whatever you’ve got — $2,000 or the original $2,500 as a settlement. Make sure he understands that you’re not offering to pay the amount you have on the debt, but that it’s being offered as settlement in full if the debt is cleared.

Dear Quincy,

The reason you haven’t gotten what you’ve asked for so far is you may have been talking to some low-level staffer or paralegal. If you have been talking directly to the lawyer, then he’s probably running a small debt collections or debt lawsuit machine. That means you’re just one of dozens of widgets coming down the line. To you, this is very personal. But to him, you’re just another account. You might have to do something to get his attention and wake him up.

The place for variable annuities might be when you’ve got everything else maxed out and your house is paid off. If you’ve reached that point, you can talk to your advisor about some of the possible benefits of a variable annuity. You can leave a beneficiary on it, so that it passes outside of probate, and you’ve got some principle guarantees and return guarantees that are decent. The returns are a little lower, though, because you’ll get hit with both the annuity fee and the mutual fund fee.

If this is the case, he probably gets a piece of whatever he collects. So, if he gets a third of $2,000 or $2,500 it might make his house payment this month. You could also talk to the hospital administrator, too, and let them know you’ll bring a couple thousand down there today if they’ll accept it as

So, by and large the answer is no for most people, because they don’t have their house paid off and aren’t maxing out all other retirement options. If you’re doing all that, and you want to do something in this area, then I might think about it.

MAY 13, 2016

The short answer is no. There might be a rare exception when I’d use a variable annuity — which is a mutual fund inside of an annuity — but as a rule I don’t use annuities. And I certainly don’t use fixed annuities for anything, because they’re just crap. Basically, they’re a CD with a huge set of fees. It’s just an insurance agent’s product, really.

— Dave

With so many jobs being outsourced, it’s smart to look toward service industries as you plan your next move. For example, while an IT technician overseas may be able to serve U.S. customers, it takes a real person to replace auto glass in cars. We all know that glass breaks, often due to violent weather such as hail storms, auto accidents, vandalism, road debris, and break-ins. In short, there’s always a need for auto glass replacement services and this need requires local technicians skilled in providing these services.

AUTO GLASS TECHNICIAN

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, automotive glass installers and repairers earned a median annual wage of $33,830, or $16.93 per hour, in May 2015 with the top 10 percent of earners reaching $50,080. Job growth is expected to increase 14 percent over the decade from 2012 to 2022.

TRAINING TO BECOME AN AUTO GLASS TECHNICIAN

In general, this occupation doesn’t require a college degree, but it does require specific skills, knowledge, and training. Most auto glass installers learn their trade on the job. This is long-term, continuous training. Because the windshield is part of the car’s safety system (it supports the roof in case of rollover accidents and acts as a barrier, keeping the car’s unrestrained occupants from being ejected in crashes), auto glass technicians must understand and follow all auto glassrelated safety regulations and standards and the appropriate windshield installation procedures. Modern windshields are bonded to the car using urethane adhesives. Adhesive manufacturers often provide training and certification to the technicians working auto glass replacement shops.

there’s always a need for auto glass replacement services and this need requires local technicians skilled in providing these services.

The state of Texas has the highest employment numbers for Glass Repair and Installation Technicians with over 1,510 employess and an hourly mean wage of $17.29 per hour. One third of those employees are in the Houston area. The next highest employment numbers are in the state of California, with 1,150 technicians. The highest mean wage for automotive repair technicians, according 13, 2016 to the BLS is Mississippi, where techs earn 62 MAY about $21 per hour.

If you’re considering becoming an auto glass replacement technician, you can search for a local auto glass replacement company and inquire about entry level positions. If you find a job this way, your employer will provide you with on-the-job training. For example, you’ll likely start as an assistant and work directly with one of the senior technicians on the staff. However, if you have some training and knowledge before applying, you’ll likely land a better job VOL. 21 ISSUE 1039 at a better wage.

CAREERS IN THE AUTO GLASS REPLACEMENT INDUSTRY:

Auto Glass

Replacement Technician

THE AUTO GLASS SAFETY COUNCIL

Additional training, and a national certification program, is available from the Automotive Glass Replacement Safety Standards (ARGSS) Council. The Auto Glass Safety Council provides an Auto Glass Safety Council-Registered training program to assist shops in finding courses that are conducted in compliance with the AGRSS Standard. These courses are an excellent first step toward becoming an accredited auto glass technician, and an accredited Master Auto Glass Technician. The courses are offered through regional training, commissioned by a sponsor. On the job experience and additional training can lead to certifications from the National Glass Association (NGA) and The Auto Glass Safety Council. Because many employers value certification, the certification training and exam fees may be provided by your employer. If you’re looking for a career that’s not likely to be outsourced and that you can start straight out of high school, consider a career as an auto glass technician.
