JOB FAIRS:
So many companies, so little time Job fairs offer an opportunity for face-to-face meetings between jobseekers and employers. Visiting these fairs is often an easy way to find good job leads. Healthcare Jobs
That Require Two Years of College or Less
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), many healthcare jobs are expected to grow much faster than average through 2022, making this field an excellent choice for anyone looking for a stable career. You may think you will have to spend years in college to start a career in healthcare, but you can actually enter the field with only a year or two of training. Here, learn about five healthcare careers that require two years of education or less.
Dental Assistants According to the BLS, the field of dental assisting is expected to grow by 25 percent through 2022, and the average dental assistant earns $34,500 per year. One can become a dental assistant after completing a vocational program at a community college or adult education center. Most dental assisting programs can be completed in a year or less. Dental assistants help with organizing dental records, scheduling appointments, taking x-rays, and providing dentists with needed tools during dental procedures.
Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians
BLS data indicate that the typical paramedic or emergency medical technician earns $31,020 per year, and the field is expected to grow by 23 percent. You can start a career as an emergency medical technician with CPR certification and the completion of a one-year career technical program. Paramedics typically must complete additional education or an associate’s degree program.
48
MAY 20, 2016
Workers in this field care for people who are sick or wounded during emergency situations. Paramedics and emergency medical technicians provide medical care after responding to 9-11 calls, and they then transport patients to hospitals where they can receive more comprehensive care. VOL. 21 ISSUE 1040
Licensed Practical Nurses The field of licensed practical nursing is expected to grow by 25 percent, and the average licensed practical nurse earns $41,540 per year, according to the BLS. Entering this field requires the completion of a one-year certificate program at a vocational school or community college. Licensed practical nurses are responsible for tasks such as measuring patients’ weight and blood pressure, changing bandages, assisting patients with dressing and bathing, and completing health records.
Physical Therapy Assistants Physical therapy assistants can expect to earn an average of $39,430 per year, and the field is expected to grow by 41 percent, as reported by the BLS. Physical therapy assistants are required to complete a two-year associate’s degree program at a community college. Working in this field involves assisting physical therapists in caring for patients who are in recovery from an illness or injury. Physical therapy assistants may be responsible for performing clerical duties, recording patients’ progress, and assisting patients with the completion of stretches and other exercises.
Surgical Technologists The BLS has projected that the field of surgical technology will grow by 30 percent though 2022, and BLS data indicate that the typical surgical technologist earns $41,790 per year. Becoming a surgical technologist requires the completion of a certificate program at a community college or vocational school. Some community colleges offer two-year associate’s degree programs in surgical technology. Surgical technologists provide assistance to doctors who are performing surgeries. They are often responsible for readying the operating room for a surgery, sterilizing surgical equipment, washing patients’ incision sites, and providing doctors with needed tools during surgery. Careers in surgical technology and the other fields discussed here are an excellent choice for someone who wants to start a career in healthcare without spending years in college. You can begin a career in any of the fields discussed in this article with as little as one year of post-secondary education. You’re a What?
Exercise Physiologist By Olivia Crosby
Megan Lukenbill helps cardiac patients develop stronger hearts, emphysema patients healthier lungs, and arthritic patients freer movements. As a clinical exercise physiologist at the Kosciusko Community Hospital in Warsaw, Indiana, she uses physical activity to treat people with illnesses. For Megan’s patients, exercise is often the best medicine.
Evaluating patients and prescribing exercises are the first stages of Megan’s work. She also demonstrates the exercises she recommends and explains the purpose of each activity. “Some of the people we help have never exercised before,” Megan says. To be sure they understand her prescription, she teaches each activity one motion at a time.
Patients with heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and a number of other conditions benefit from physical activity. But different activities are good for certain types of patients, and some activities are dangerous for people with particular medical conditions. Exercise physiologists like Megan prescribe exercise programs for each patient, monitor patients while they exercise, and track each person’s progress.
The next phase of a hospital-based exercise program is monitoring patients as they work out. Megan and two other staff members track up to eight patients at a time, making sure they exercise properly. Megan watches a computer screen that shows each patient’s heart rate, blood oxygen level, and blood pressure throughout the regimen. Based on these measurements, she asks patients to increase or decrease their activity. “If patients exercise too much, they risk injury,” says Megan. “For example, if lung patients exercise when they don’t have enough oxygen in the blood, the body will start to break down muscle. But if patients exercise too little, they won’t grow stronger.”
When someone comes to the wellness center at the hospital where she works, Megan first conducts a fitness test to assess his or her physical condition. She usually asks patients to walk on a treadmill after connecting them to an EKG machine, to track heart rate and rhythm; a pulse oximeter, to track the oxygen in the blood; and a blood pressure cuff, to gauge the pressure exerted by the heart in pumping blood throughout the body. Megan also uses weights and other instruments to measure patients’ strength and flexibility. Based on the results of these tests, she prescribes appropriate exercises. In designing activity prescriptions, Megan uses her understanding of how exercise affects the body. For example, when working with patients who have lung disease – which can cause shortness of breath, resulting in decreased oxygen levels – she recommends exercises that don’t deplete too much of the oxygen in the blood. “Larger muscles use more oxygen,” she says. “So when someone with lung disease comes in, we usually start with low-intensity exercises. Sometimes, we recommend an arm cycle instead of a regular bicycle because the muscles in the arms are smaller than the muscles in the legs.” She slowly increases the difficulty of the activity to strengthen lung function. Megan has an abundance of exercises to choose from when prescribing a regimen. She might ask patients with muscle weakness to push against an elastic band to build strength, eventually guiding them to more complex weight equipment. Most of the equipment her patients use is the same as that found in most gyms, but some is specifically designed for clinical patients.
Supervising eight patients at the same time requires concentration. Exercise physiologists stay alert for patient difficulties and are prepared to handle emergencies. They stand ready to assist patients who have heart attacks, fainting spells, allergic reactions or other crises. But it takes more than scientific knowledge and a close eye to practice exercise physiology. An outgoing personality and the ability to inspire and motivate patients are essential to the job. “You have to be good at relating to people and giving them confidence,” Megan says. “People are scared when they start, especially people who have had heart attacks.” Megan reassures and encourages her patients. And one of the best forms of encouragement for exercise patients is their progress reports. Megan plots a patient’s increasing strength on a chart and writes a detailed report describing his or her improving fitness capacity. She shares these reports with her patients and their doctors. Like many exercise physiologists, Megan takes her skills outside the hospital and into the community several times

each month. She conducts health screenings and exercise education classes at local businesses, checking employees’ blood pressure, body composition, and strength and teaching people about the importance of exercise and good nutrition.
And exercise physiology jobs usually require that applicants have CPR certification. Applicants for jobs in most hospitals must have certification in basic life support and basic or advanced cardiac care.
Clinical exercise physiologists like Megan often work in hospitals, physical therapy offices, and sports medicine clinics. Other types of exercise physiologists manage fitness programs for corporations and fitness centers. Some exercise physiologists work in professional athletic training programs, using their knowledge of the effects of exercise to analyze each athlete’s sport and design and exercise program tailored to that sport.
Professional registration and certification increases exercise physiologists’ employment opportunities. Clinical exercise physiologists may register with the American College of Sports Medicine after earning a master’s degree, passing an exam, and gaining at least 12,000 hours of hospital experience. The organization also certifies physiologists as exercise specialists if they have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, pass an exam, and gain at least 600 hours of hospital experience. And the American Society of Exercise Physiologists offers an exercise physiologist certification for workers who have a bachelor’s degree in the field and pass an exam. To keep certification current, exercise physiologists must take continuing education classes.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not collect data on exercise physiologists. But according to industry sources, salaries vary widely, based in part on where exercise physiologists work. Most earn between $20,000 and $45,000 annually; those with doctoral degrees usually earn more. Most exercise physiologists have at least a bachelor’s degree in exercise science or exercise physiology. Among other subjects, they study biology, anatomy and chemistry. Megan also has a master’s degree, as do many exercise physiologists who work in hospitals. Those with doctoral degrees often teach exercise science in colleges and universities and conduct research on the effects of exercise.
VOL. 21 ISSUE 1040
Megan enjoys learning about the latest scientific discoveries in her field, but what she likes best is using those discoveries to achieve results. “People don’t realize the importance of exercise,” she says. “We’ve had patients with congestive heart failure return to normal because of exercise. Not all recoveries are so dramatic, but we always strive to make people healthier and stronger.

It’s Okay To Take Control Dear Dave,
Obviously, this guy has gotten some healing and I’m very proud of you both. Heroin is a big deal and a hard habit to kick. The fact that he has done it this long is awesome!
My husband is a recovering heroin addict. He’s been clean for two years, but I still feel we shouldn’t keep cash in the house or give him unsupervised access to a bank account. He agrees with these precautions, even though he does need a little pocket money from time to time. We’ve also started your plan to try and get control of our finances, so how would you suggest handling a situation like this?
Pause The Debt Snowball
Meghan
Dear Dave,
Dear Meghan,
I’m going through a divorce that’s about to become final in two weeks. I moved in with my parents temporarily while I save up money to get my own place and start over. I make $30,000 a year, and it looks like I’ll have around $43,000 in debt when the divorce is finalized. Should I pause my debt snowball in order to financially get back on my feet again?
First of all, congratulations on his being clean for two years. That’s awesome! The longer he stays clean, the more he’ll begin to normalize his mechanical activities with things like money. I agree with not putting him in charge of large sums of money just yet. However, we work with addicts all the time at my company, and I don’t agree that you can’t have any money in the house when he has been clean for two years. You might not want a big pile of cash lying around, but there’s no reason you can’t run the envelope system out of your purse. I mean, at this point if you can’t trust him to stay out of your purse, then you’ve got other major issues in your marriage. I think you need to be on a debit card and the envelope system. I also think you need to be controlling about 98 percent of the money for now. For what he’s doing, I’d work daily cash allowances and expand that to weekly when you’re comfortable with it. Also, ask for some accountability from him as to where the pocket money goes. Ask him to keep receipts, and turn them in as if he were working for a company and taking a petty cash withdrawal. That holds him accountable for spending it on what he said he was spending it on, and it’s healthy for someone who’s a recovering addict. When someone’s fresh recovering from being an addict, and especially because heroin is so addicting, I probably wouldn’t let him legally have access to the household account for a while
58
longer. He can look at it, and you two can make financial decisions together, but you are in control of it. I wouldn’t want it where he can just reach over and clean out the account if he has a relapse.
MAY 20, 2016
—Dave
Adam Dear Adam, Yeah, that’s what I would do. There are reasons to pause the debt snowball, and one of those can be going through a divorce. Not only are there expenses, but you may end up with payments you don’t even expect. I think the motivation and the heart behind the debt snowball is that you gain momentum and traction, and you do it quickly when you’re in a positive emotional position. You may not have that right now, so I think pressing pause and building up for expenses that may come — plus getting your own place — is a good idea. Just rent the cheapest spot you can as soon as possible. Then, once you get in there and get your life in operational mode again, you’ll be ready to rock on! —Dave

GENERAL JOB FAIR
Interviewing for a new job creates a lot of tension and frustration. In 2014, I asked a room full of candidates about their biggest frustrations while job hunting. Here are some of the questions that I answered.
Q : My whole department was
laid off 3 months ago and have been looking for a new job ever since, and I’m just so frustrated. I know that I was a good worker and my boss said I was a good employee, but he got laid off too. The interviews I’ve had seem to go good, but they never call me back. Whenever I think an interview has been good, I start hoping and thinking that maybe I got the job. All of them tell me that they will get back to me, and then I wait and wait for them to call. The last two interviews went so well that I was sure I got the job and then I never heard from them again. Why do they say they will get back to you if they never mean it at all? I’m just angry. - Houston, Texas Reader A: I think you’re right to be frustrated and angry. I know that you are getting tired of the runaround. I can’t really say why companies treat candidates like that, but it’s wrong. Listen up recruiters and interviewers: If you aren’t going to call or at least send a letter, you need to let the interviewee know. If you don’t keep your word now, when will you? Try to remember how you felt when you were looking for your current job. Did you deserve to be treated with disrespect? Treat them exactly the way that you would want to be treated. If they don’t fit the position, tell them. If you aren’t going to call, don’t say that you will. I always tell everyone that I interview that I will get back to them – and then I do. How hard is that?
the right clothes to interview. I try to dress as well as I can, but nothing I have is good for that. The dress I’m wearing now is not right, and I know it. I can’t afford to go out and buy something because I barely have enough money to support my kids and me. -Houston, Texas Reader
A: There are places where you can go f or help. WorkFaith Connections http://workfaithconnection.org has an 8 day job readiness bootcamp that will totally prepare you for answering tough questions, and will help you get clothing for inter views. Dress for Success also provides interview attire and advice. Don’t tr y to navigate your way through this situation on your own because there is a lot of help out there! Q:
I have a Masters Degree in P s y c h o l o g y, a n d p e o p l e j u s t t e l l me tha t I am overqualified f or their job. I need to find something while I am waiting to get certified so tha t I can work in my field. How do I find a job tha t is short term when I’m constantly being rejected for my educa tion? -Houston, Texas Reader
A:
I think you are being rejected because you immedia tel y announce that you want the job for a short time. No one wants to spend the time and mone y to train you if you are not going to sta y in the position for awhile. If your goal is short term, you need to go to staf fing a gencies and find a short term position. If you don’t ha ve an y marketa ble talents, you will have a hard time finding wha t you want.
If you have any questions about interviewing, hiring, or work, just email Ask Diana. I’d love to hear from you. Due to the volume of response, not ever y question will appear in the column, but most questions will re c e iv e an e m ail re s p o ns e w it h i n 2 t o 3 d ay s .

Your Dream Practitioners of physical therapy tend to share some common traits. If you love to help others and want to dedicate your time to a worthwhile pursuit, then you share those traits as well. A career as a physical therapist can be a great way to gain fulfillment and job satisfaction in a growing field that comes with some substantial perks. Work for physical therapists is abundant in the United States, and there are many options for training in the field. The time is right to turn your passion into your life’s work.
The Nature of Physical Therapy Physical therapists help patients with health problems that make it difficult to move about and/or complete everyday tasks, and those who need to rehabilitate or restore physical function and fitness. This type of work involves constant human contact, sometimes in the way of massage therapy, and typically continual work with the same patient. Such interaction is ideal for organic development of relationshipbuilding skills and social aptitude. Exposure to, and analysis of, human bodies throughout the stages of injury and rehabilitation also reliably reinforce the fundamental knowledge required for physical therapy. Making a career choice of any kind requires consideration of the future of those jobs in the current economy. People will always need help developing, maintaining, and rehabilitating their bodies, and the science of physical therapy will always be a work in progress, needing fresh minds for tomorrow’s solutions.
Physical Therapy Careers in the United States
62
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs for physical therapists in America are abundant and expected to grow 41 percent between 2012 and 2022, and the annual median pay as of 2012 is $79,860. As more information on the rehabilitative benefits of physical therapy come to light, more hospitals and physical training facilities will look to physical therapists to help people progress and recover. People from all walks of life need this kind of help, not just athletes and accident victims, but also military veterans, first responders, and patients with degenerative diseases.

Career
in Physical Therapy • Rehabilitation and Outpatient Clinics rely heavily on physical therapists and their assistants. • Sports Training Facilities have adopted a conscientious approach to developing athletes. A focus on prevention of injuries has become popular among trainers, as well as the rehabilitation of injuries small and large. • Skilled Nursing has become a go-to solution for many patients needing physical therapy at homes, hospitals, and schools. Occupational environments worldwide employ physical therapists for the benefit of hard-working employees.
• Extended Care Facilities employ from many specialized fields, chiefly physical therapy. This may include work with the elderly, people with degenerative conditions, and patients with genetic conditions. • Fitness Centers need physical therapists for both preventative and rehabilitative focused training. This work sometimes involves tutoring, instruction, and the development of personalized physical therapy programs. • Private Practices worldwide hire physical therapists for a number of positions, ranging from massage therapy in casinos, executive offices, and malls, to personal tutoring and instruction. Physical therapist assistant programs abound throughout the U.S., with a wide variety of coursework. Associate degree programs can be completed in as little as 18 months with yearround study; for a more complete education, look for a program that culminates in a bachelor’s degree in health sciences with a concentration in physical therapy. Look for a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education to improve your chances of employment after school. There are many entry-level positions available in this growing field, which means your passion and hard work in physical therapy will almost certainly bear fruit. This line of work can fulfill your desire to help others improve their quality of life and concurrently aid you in growing as a person. If this sounds like what you’ve been looking for, then begin researching schools with physical therapy programs, and you will have effectively taken your first step toward your dream job.
