HOW TO THRIVE

AFTER GETTING FIRED. Getting fired may seem like the worst thing that could possibly happen to you. You’ve got bills to pay and they won’t wait until you find another job. What can make the situation even more challenging is if you don’t have savings that can get you through until you do land another job. The severity of your situation will determine how quickly you will have to hustle to recover from being terminated. Here are some ideas to help you prioritize the tasks you will want to complete in your efforts to earn money again. 1. Contact every connection you have to let them know you are looking for a job. This includes using social networking sites. Don’t be shy about letting others know about your need for work. Someone you know may have some inside information about job openings that are not even being advertised. 2. Contact your local employment agency

possibly give you some career leads. Now is the time to dust off your resume by updating it with relevant and current information. Having a more experienced career professional look over your work may help you create a stronger presentation of yourself.

there. Although unemployment will not pay your full previous salary, it will help to alleviate some of the financial stresses you may be facing in the weeks and months to come.

6. Make a list of all your skills and talents, and consider if there is a way you could sell your skills independently of a job. There may be things you haven’t considered that people need and you know how to do. Be sure to brainstorm as many ideas as you can. Ask your spouse or significant other for help identifying things you do well. Also use the Internet to find low or no start up capital opportunities you could develop quickly to benefit from your skills and knowledge.

There are different kinds of temp agencies, including manual labor, technical, and clerical. Your prior experience and skills will determine which type of agency you choose.

7. Can you babysit neighborhood kids in your home? If you can get enough clientele, this may rival your regular salary, depending upon your occupational background. Research to find out how many kids you can babysit without needing licensure as a daycare.

4. Go to your alma mater career office and

8. See if your local newspaper is in need of a

and then you’d have the rest of the day to hunt for a job. This doesn’t represent a lot of money and certainly won’t be a replacement for your regular salary, but every little bit helps.

delivery person, which is early morning work

10. Don’t forget to assess your current expenditures to see if there is an area that you can make cuts in order to save money. A subscription to magazines, newspapers, and online services is one area that you could consider eliminating. Downgrading on services such as cable and getting a prepaid cell phone can also help cut corners. Combining various chores into one weekly trip can save money on gas as well. Also, when you go to the store, make sure that every item you are purchasing is necessary. It is amazing how much money is wasted by the average family on things they don’t really need.

Now is the time to be especially frugal and financially responsible. Coming from a scenario where there was a regular income, this may at first seem difficult to do. But with a little effort, you can conquer your situation. As they say, there is a silver lining to every cloud. Remember that, and try to look for it. Sometimes great things come from adversity. So keep your head up & persevere. This is the beginning of something new. VOL. 21 ISSUE 1041

You’re A What?

ADMISSIONS CONSULTANT by: Elka Maria Torpey

A

i m i n g f o r t h e I v y L e a g u e? A d m i s s i o n s consultant Derek Meeker can give you advice on how to get in. “There are a lot of myths out there about what school officials are looking f o r i n a n a p p l i c a t i o n ,” s a y s D e r e k , w h o s p e cializes in law school admissions. Part of his job is to steer clients in the right direction &, h o p e f u l l y, i n c r e a s e t h e i r c h a n c e s o f g e t t i n g into a school that’s right for them. He helps with everything from selecting an appropriate school to writing personal statements. An admissions consultant’s work often begins with assessing clients’ strengths & weaknesses & d i s c u s s i n g p o s s i b l e s c h o o l s t o c o n s i d e r. During this initial consultation, Derek covers a f e w b a s i c s . “ I t ’ s s o r t o f a c o u n s e l i n g p r o c e s s ,” says Derek. “I ask them about their personal background, academic interests, jobs that they’ve held. And I help people to identify w h a t ’ s u n i q u e a b o u t t h e m s e l v e s .” One challenge in this work arises when clients’ aspirations outshine their qualifications. “While I get clients from all over the spectrum, the majority want to go to the top schools—those t h a t h a v e a 6 - t o 1 5 - p e r c e n t a c c e p t a n c e r a t e ,” says Derek. “I am very realistic with people. Sometimes, that’s not an easy conversation to h a v e .” Other times, admissions consultants help clients realize how much potential they have. For example, one of Derek’s clients originally hadn’t planned to apply to the most competitive schools. After hearing her story and her background, though, Derek encouraged her

46

MAY 27, 2016

to apply to top-tier schools; he knew that she had an excellent chance of getting accepted anywhere she applied. And he was right: U l t i m a t e l y, t h e w o m a n w a s a c c e p t e d t o o n e o f t h e h i g h e s t r a n k e d l a w s c h o o l s i n t h e c o u n t r y. How much help an admissions consultant provides, & the amount of time spent with a client, vary based on each client’s needs or desires. In addition to helping clients choose schools, these workers frequently offer advice on letters of recommendation, resumes, & essays or personal statements. They might, for example, suggest that a client write about a specific topic, such as overcoming a challenge, to provide the admissions committee with a more complete picture of who he or she really is. Being able to identify good writing—& suggest improvements—is critical for admissions consultants, as is attention to detail. “I love helping people with their writing & with b e c o m i n g b e t t e r w r i t e r s ,” s a y s D e r e k , w h o s e undergraduate degree is in journalism. “It’s not just about helping them get into the best school. I try to give detailed & specific advice that can help my clients even after they get i n t o s c h o o l .” Ta c t & i n t e r p e r s o n a l s k i l l s a r e a l s o e s s e n t i a l f o r a d m i s s i o n s c o n s u l t a n t s . “ Yo u h a v e t o b e a b l e t o r e l a t e t o p e o p l e o p e n l y a n d h o n e s t l y, & n o t b e a b r a s i v e ,” s a y s D e r e k . “ C l i e n t s a r e depending on you for your honest advice. They m i g h t n o t w a n t t o h e a r w h a t y o u h a v e t o s a y, s o y o u h a v e t o b e d i p l o m a t i c .” VOL. 21 ISSUE 1041

Other qualifications of admissions consultants v a r y. S o m e c o n s u l t a n t s , l i k e D e r e k , h a v e previous experience in college admissions. As the former dean of admissions at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Derek once decided which applicants to accept and which to reject. Former admissions workers often have backgrounds in education administration or marketing. Some consultants have experience as guidance counselors or academic advisors. And others may have applied successfully to a top school themselves. Many consultants work for an admissions or educational consulting firm. Others are selfemployed. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics does not collect employment or wage data on admissions consultants. According to the Independent Educational C o n s u l t a n t s A s s o c i a t i o n , h o w e v e r, e x p e r i e n c e d educational consultants, a category that may include admissions consultants, earned an average of $72,000 in 2006. But consultants’ earnings vary based on the number of clients they have and the level of experience they bring to the job. Admissions consultants o f t e n c h a r g e b y t h e h o u r, u p t o a b o u t $ 1 5 0 . Some charge a preset fee, sometimes in the thousands of dollars, to help with a specific issue or for comprehensive help on one or more applications. Although admissions consultants may meet with their clients in person, face-to-face interaction is not necessarily required. Their work can be done through e-mail & over the phone, so their clients can be located almost anywhere. Consultants are often busiest from A u g u s t u n t i l J a n u a r y, w h e n m o s t s t u d e n t s prepare applications. But their day-to-day w o r k l o a d s v a r y . “ I t ’ s u n p r e d i c t a b l e ,” s a y s Derek of his schedule. As a result, some consultants work only part-time. Admissions consultants work with prospective undergraduates and with law, medical, business, and other graduate students. Derek says there is ample work for admissions consultants because there is strong competition to get into good schools—particularly graduate or professional schools. VOL. 21 ISSUE 1041

At his former post, for example, Derek and others on the admissions committee reviewed as many as 6,500 applications for 250 openings. And that was several years ago. “A l l o f t h e t o p s c h o o l s h a v e m o r e t h a n e n o u g h a p p l i c a n t s w h o a r e q u a l i f i e d ,” s a y s D e r e k . S o , he says, prospective students have become increasingly willing to seek help in applying. “A d m i s s i o n s c o n s u l t i n g h a s d e f i n i t e l y b e c o m e m o r e c o m m o n i n t h e l a s t d e c a d e .” M a n y o f D e r e k ’ s c l i e n t s a r e o l d e r, w o r k i n g adults who are interested in returning to school. “I’ve had some really great success s t o r i e s ,” h e s a y s , “ a n d t h o s e c l i e n t s a r e r e a l l y h a p p y .” People seek consultation for a range of reasons. Some applicants struggled academically in high school or as undergraduate students. Others have personal issues that affected their grades or admissions test scores. Still others might have a criminal record and want to know how to handle it on an application. “It’s really rewarding to help someone through the process w h o c o m e s t o y o u a n d i s l o s t ,” h e s a y s . A common problem, says Derek, is that applicants often are so focused on trying to impress the admissions committee that they say only what they think the committee wants t o h e a r. T h i s c a n h u r t a p p l i c a n t s i f t h e y d o n ’ t understand what admissions officers are really l o o k i n g f o r. For example, he says, working the night shift at a fast-food restaurant is just as important to note on your application as a prestigious internship or part-time job at a law firm. And if a teaching assistant is the best judge of your academic work, then that’s the person who should write your letter of recommendation— not necessarily a department chair or a highp r o f i l e f a c u l t y m e m b e r. HIGH PAYING

JOBS

According to the United States Census Bureau, those with a bachelor’s degree earn $51,554 a year on average (as cited in Anas, 2006). The U.S. Department of Labor estimates that elementary and secondary education teachers earn median annual salaries ranging from $45,120 to $49,920, depending upon the grade level that they teach (as cited in Farr & Shatkin, 2009).

With typical teachers’ salaries being slightly below the expected salary for a bachelor’s degree holder, those who teach in elementary or secondary schools may feel that their salaries are too low. Furthermore, with more strict requirements being in place for teachers, many jobs may require a master’s degree, making teachers’ salaries seem even more undesirable. However, those who wish to pursue a career in education should not feel discouraged, as a variety of high-paying jobs exists in the field of education.

Post-Secondary Teachers Those who are interested in education but want to earn substantial income should consider careers as postsecondary teachers. Most positions in universities require instructors to have doctoral degrees, but the typical salaries of post-secondary teachers compensate for the additional required education. Post-secondary instructors who teach courses in the health sciences, for example, enjoy median annual earnings of $80,700, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (as cited in Farr & Shatkin, 2009).

assignments, and grading the work of their students. They may also writebooks or conduct research as a part of their jobs.

Education Administrators Education administrators also enjoy lucrative careers. When employed by elementary or secondary schools, they earn median yearly salaries of $80,580, as indicated by the U.S. Department of Labor (as cited in Farr & Shatkin, 2009). Careers in education administration generally require experience in addition to a degree, and many administrators begin working as teachers and advance within their school building, according to Kate Long, an advanced mathematics teacher at Ashland High School in northeast Ohio. Education administrators are employed by a school district, and they may fulfill the role of a principal, assistant principal, or athletic director. They serve to oversee the academic and extracurricular activities in their school buildings, and they may be involved in disciplining students and contacting their parents when

School Psychologists The U.S. Department of Labor has reported that school psychologists typically earn $62,210 annually (as cited in Farr & Shatkin, 2009). They are required to obtain a doctoral degree to be employed, and they are trained in psychology, counseling, education, and childhood development. In their work, school psychologists may administer personality or intelligence tests to students and interpret their results. They assess students who may display behavioral problems and refer them to other psychologists if necessary. They may also work with teachers and parents to improve student behavior and performance. School psychology, in addition to education administration and post-secondary teaching, provides those interested in education with a lucrative career opportunity. 7STEPS Life

THE

of

TO

LIVING

Your DREAMS

For more than 20 years, I’ve had the honor of helping millions of families take control of their money and stop drowning in debt. It’s been awesome to see so many people change their lives! Early on, however, I noticed a pattern with the people I was counseling and the callers on my radio show. The thought of getting out of debt was overwhelming to them. The pile of debt in front of them seemed too big, and they didn’t know how to start. That’s why I created the Baby Steps. These seven money markers are designed to get you out of debt and show you how to build the kind of wealth you always dreamed of. But taking control of your money doesn’t happen overnight. The Baby Steps are based on the idea that you can accomplish anything if you take it one step at a time.

BABY STEP 1:

Save $1,000 in a Beginner Emergency Fund L i f e h a p p e n s . Tr a n s m i s s i o n s b l o w a n d d r y e r s burn out. An emergency fund takes care of these not-so-happy surprises. Don’t be one of the 60 percent of Americans who can’t cover unexpected expenses. Having $1,000 set aside just for emergencies puts a little buffer between you and the “Check Engine” light on your dashboard.

STEP 2:

Pay off all debt with the Debt Snowball List all your debts except your house from smallest to largest by balance. Make minimum payments on all of them except the smallest one, and attack that one with a vengeance! Put every dollar you can get your hands on toward that smallest debt and get it out of your life for good! O n c e t h e f i r s t o n e i s o u t o f t h e w a y, t a k e t h a t money and add it to the next debt on the list. Keep going all the way down the list, one debt at a time. Every time you pay off one debt, you have more money to throw at the next one. That’s what we call it the Debt Snowball: As the snowball rolls o v e r, i t p i c k s u p m o r e s n o w . B y t h e t i m e y o u g e t near the bottom of your debt list, it starts to look l i k e a n a v a l a n c h e ! Yo u ’ l l b e d e b t - f r e e f a s t e r t h a n you ever thought possible!

STEP 3:

Build a Fully Funded Emergency Fund of 3–6 months of expenses Once you’re out of debt except your house, go

STEP 4:

Invest 15% of household income into retirement With no debt and a big emergency fund, you’ve finally freed up your greatest wealthbuilding tool: your income. So now it’s time to focus on your retirement dream. Once you hit Baby Step 4, I want you to start investing 15% of your income into your 401(k) and Roth IRA.

Insurance for Young Couple

Way to go, guys. I’m proud of you!

Dear Dave,

— Dave

My wife and I are both in our early 20s, we’re debtfree, and we’re just a couple of months away from having a fully loaded emergency fund of six months of expenses. We both also have 401(k) plans at work, and we’re looking forward to starting additional investments later this year. Right now, we’re trying to decide on which life insurance policies to buy. I know you always recommend term insurance, but how long should the coverage last? Would you suggest 15-, 20- or 30-year policies?

How Much House? Dear Dave, Based on your annual income, how do you determine how much house you can afford? Ryan

Anonymous Dear Ryan, Dear Anonymous, Wow, it sounds like you two are starting your lives together on the right foot. Congratulations on being super smart with your money! I recommend 15- or 20-year level term policies, unless you have children. I’m assuming kids are not in the picture, since you didn’t mention any. Then, if you decide to grow your family at some point down the road, I’d advise converting those to 30-year term policies. The idea behind this is you want the insurance to be there to protect everyone in the family until the kids are out on their own and established. In the meantime and in the years after, your continued saving and wealth building will lead you to a place where you and your wife are self-insured.

58

MAY 27, 2016

I always tell folks never get a home loan where the monthly payment is more than a fourth of your take home pay. I’m talking about basing this on a 15-year, fixed-rate mortgage. Twenty-five percent of your monthly take home pay is the absolute most you should have going out the door toward a mortgage payment. I realize that’s a pretty conservative number in most people’s minds. You can actually, technically qualify for almost twice that figure. But I think having that much of your paycheck going toward house payments is pretty dumb. Your shortest, quickest path to wealth is being debt-free. And when most of your money isn’t flying out the door to make payments on stuff, it’s easy to build wealth and increase your level of generosity! —Dave

I got to my interview about 20 minutes earl y, and when I got there, I was g iven an a pplica tion. The inter viewer said tha t her and another lady were just finishing lunch, and the y would be with me soon. I waited and waited for 23 minutes, and then I just picked up my application and left. They ha ven’t even called me to ask me why I left! Ha ve you ever heard of an ything so rude? -Clear Lake, Texas Reader

A:

Ye s , I h a v e . H e r e ’s t h e d e a l : you got there 20 minutes early, and that was right in the middle of their lunch. I don’t know how many other interviews they had already had that morning, but I do know they deserved to eat lunch. They said they would finish their lunch and talk with you, but you left. What I’m sa ying is tha t the y weren’t rude. If you get to an inter view early, expect to wait. If you get there late, expect to leave. They haven’t called you because you left. If you lea ve, you are displa ying the kind of beha vior tha t the y can expect from you.

Education

If you are just starting out, put your education first. You are showing off your stellar GPA and that you are a recent graduate. If you’ve got a master’s degree, that’s a plus. You’ll want your potential employer to know this. Many states now require teachers to have master’s degrees.

Briefly list your experience. Maybe students have won awards or received honors because of your guidance. Perhaps you put in extra time with extra-curricular activities like coaching or producing the school yearbook. Successful lessons, familiarity with the state or common core, or any recognition you’ve received should also be mentioned.

Letters of Recommendation

Obtain two to three letters of recommendation to include with your resume. Having a letter from a current employee of the school or district you are applying to can be helpful. Make sure these letters are written by people who can highlight your strengths. Previous principals or teaching colleagues are good choices.

Electronic Portfolio

While an electronic portfolio is not necessary, it can be helpful and will make you stand out. A website or blog site listed on a resume gives a potential employer a chance to see a multi-media display of who you are and what kind of a teacher you are. A webpage gives you a place to have your philosophy of education, impressive lesson plans, pictures, and examples of student work. You could even have an embedded video of you teaching a class. Using an electronic portfolio will show the principal that you embrace technology and will probably use it in the classroom. A tech-savvy teacher for a tech-saturated world might be just the person your next school is looking for.

Follow-up phone call

Once a position is posted, your resume could find itself in a pile of many other resumes. A simple phone call to the school, expressing your interest or asking about interview times can help bring attention to your resume. When you do call, make sure it is to the actual school to which you are applying, district offices. Speaking to the principal or person in charge of hiring is the person you want to speak to. Teaching Philosophy

Many districts and schools may ask for your teaching philosophy. This is something you should have developed during your educational career and refined and revised as you’ve been teaching. If your philosophy is not requested for an initial application, you may want to include a brief statement in a cover letter. This will give your potential employer an idea of what kind of teacher you are, and if you’d be a good fit for the school. If your philosophy is at odds with the school’s teaching beliefs, don’t customize your educational philosophy to fit theirs. Be honest about your views on teaching. VOL. 21 ISSUE 1041
