Once you’ve learned this technique, your interviews will be greatly improved because you will be able to do the most important thing necessary to land a job—tell the employer exactly how you can perform his or her job.
The formula: Creating Your Strategy Examine your previous experience. Write out the major responsibilities for each job you’ve held. Note any special accomplishments. Zero in on your important work strengths— those abilities where you excel and are most productive. Then, check with your contacts and use your network to get as much background as possible about the employer, the company, and the position’s needs. Check the hiring manager’s LinkedIn profile. Go to Glassdoor.com and read reviews of the organization. Many times, your contacts and research will point out the very aspects that must make up your 5 top selling points which I call, the 5 Point Agenda. Other times, there will be little information available and you will need to guess based on your general knowledge about performing the job. After reviewing the position’s needs, determine which of your abilities and which aspects of your experience will be most important to the employer. Then create your 5 Point Agenda, selecting each point to build a solid picture emphasizing how you can do the best job. This is an important step as the 5 Point Agenda is the basis for creating your 60 Second Sell. Before every job interview, you will customize your 5 Point Agenda to reflect the responsibilities of the job as well as the company’s goals and objectives. These five points are your basic building blocks to answer the interviewer’s questions. You’ll want

to emphasize each of these points whenever the opportunity presents itself. The message the employer will hear is that you have the ability to perform and do well in the job—and it will give your prospective boss confidence in hiring you. On top of that, they likely will remember these aspects about you. Here is the sample that Susan, 58, created about her role as a Human Resources Director. The company wanted to find a progressive HR partner to lead its organization. They needed a strategic leader. The client had heard about the position from a friend at an HR conference and wanted to go after the job. Her 5 Point Agenda needed to stress her achievements.
Example: Human Resources Director Point 1: Award-winning human resources leader. Point 2: Providing strategic direction for the organization that was recently named a national best places-to-work company. Point 3: Strong entrepreneurial drive was responsible for delivering new programs, HR systems, and major policy enhancements. Point 4: A strategic and operational business partner working closely with top executives. Point 5: Exceeds goals and expectations.

I’m on Baby Step 2 of your plan, and I’ll be debt-free except for my home by the end of the year. I have a friend who is very irresponsible with his money, and he often asks to “borrow” cash between paychecks. I don’t want to be cruel, but things are getting out of hand with his requests for money.
My wife and I are both 46, and we have two teenagers in middle school. We were told recently that now is the perfect time for us to buy long-term care insurance. How do you feel about this in our situation?
James Dear James, I think you should tell your friend the truth. Let him know you’ve decided to get control of your money, you’re trying to get out of debt, and you simply don’t have cash to spare. Be sure to do it with a kind spirit, but sometimes you’ve got to look at the big picture in these situations. You’re not really helping someone if you participate in their misbehavior and enable bad habits. Sometimes, you have to love someone enough to tell them no. Let your friend know how hard you’re working to get your finances in order, and how it’s making a big difference in your life. Maybe you could offer to show him the steps you’ve taken so far, and let him know he could be successful doing this, too. You might even try to show him how to make a monthly budget, and act as his guide and accountability partner if he’s willing to accept this kind of help. In some cases, helping someone means offering what you know they need instead of what they want. But you’re never really helping someone who’s incompetent with money by simply handing them cash. Thomas Dear Thomas, No, now is not the perfect time for you guys to buy long-term care insurance. Research shows there’s about a one percent chance of folks your age needing long-term care insurance, and I generally don’t recommend insuring against things that have such a miniscule chance of happening. Keep in mind that many factors, such as your current health and family history, could play into your decision of exactly when to buy long-term care insurance. However, I do strongly urge people to find a good long-term care policy no later than age 60. At that point, the chances of something unfortunate happening begin to rise each and every year. You could think of it as a gift to yourself and your family. Nursing home costs are astronomical these days, and care of that sort can deplete your nest egg very quickly! —Dave

The Best Way to Win With Money

One of the seven money habits I often talk about is simply “Make a Plan for Your Money.” It’s so basic, but so many people don’t do it on a regular basis. Another way of saying this—and hang with me here—is you need to make a budget. I know what you’re thinking. Budgeting is so boring! I get that. But, honestly, budgeting gets a bad rap. I’m as much of a free spirit as anyone, so I understand that the thought of sitting down and talking about bills and expenses might sound a little dull. I also understand how a budget might seem very restrictive. But here’s a secret about budgeting: Creating a budget will actually give you freedom with your money. It gives you permission to spend! It’s one of the amazing principles about money I discuss in my book, Love Your Life Not Theirs. When you know where every dollar is going, you’re prepared. You know what’s coming in and what’s going out. When most people start budgeting, they feel like they got a raise. They suddenly “find” money they didn’t realize was there. One great result of this is you’ll be able to start spending without guilt. All your money is accounted for, so you don’t have to worry whether or not your bank account will cover your purchase. No matter what you’ve heard, I promise that making a budget isn’t difficult. First, simply list your monthly household income before the month begins. Next, list all your monthly expenses. This should include all your bills, like rent, utilities, basic clothing needs and food, as well as your groceries, eating out, shopping…everything! Finally, subtract all your expenses from your income. If you’ve assigned every dollar a name, you should have zero. This is a simple zero-based budget. When you’re making your budget, I recommend using a free app called EveryDollar. It’s the best budgeting app out there. It will help you create a plan for your money, while making it easy stay on top of your budget throughout the month. Don’t get discouraged if you mess up a few times. You might need three or four months to get your budget the way you want it. But once you have a plan in place, you’ll be amazed at how much more in control you feel about your money. You’ll experience more freedom, less anxiety, and a better all-around understanding of your financial situation. Here’s my challenge to you: If you’re not living on a monthly budget, give it a try. I bet you’ll see a big difference, and you’ll never go back to a budget-less life again! 30 JULY 5, 2019

1: Your Personal Life Must Be In Order (as much as possible) Prior to looking for a new job, endeavor to put your personal life in order, and be ready to accept whatever it takes to find your new job. You'll require support at home and some quality time in order to find the job you really want. Your job campaign will now become your 'job' for the time being, and should be placed above all other priorities. It's time to make a commitment! Of course I'm not suggesting you ignore your family, but some things will have to be sacrificed. As an example, if you must choose between going to your child's concert or working on your resume, you must go to the concert. However, if the choice is between working on your cover letter or watching Monday Night Football, I'm sure you know what your choice must be.
2: Set Your Target Set the amount of time you intend working on your job search each and every week, and stick to it! Remember, just like a lot of other things in life, you're only going to get out of this as much as you put into it. Spend as much time as it takes to create the perfect cover letter and resume.
3: Start Gathering Facts Now it's time to start gathering facts, figures, and prior career accomplishments. Begin with dates of employment, job descriptions and your responsibilities, major achievements, salary progression, educational background, special skills that make you unique, and include any courses you've undertaken since high school or college. This should include any training or courses provided and paid for by your company. Get all this information down on paper because you'll need it to write your resume, for your cover letter, and for interviews.
4: Create Your Portfolio If an advertising agency is looking for new clients, the first thing they do is show you their portfolio. This will include their achievements, copies of their finest work, and the astounding results achieved through their endeavors. Well, you also are selling a product, and that product is YOU! Imagine that you own a company called 'Me Inc.' - you're the CEO of this company and you must create a product that your customers (in this case we're referring to potential employers) will see great value in and will want to buy. During a job interview, your portfolio will demonstrate and support your abilities. Anything that's not confidential or the property of your previous employers should be kept in your portfolio. People, like marketing personnel, artists, designers, architects and so on will especially see the value in maintaining an up-to-date portfolio. Some of the contents of your portfolio might include letters of success, brochures, catalogues, and include anything else of your creation, such as reports, advertisements, products, and patents. What works really well in a portfolio is successful 'before and after' marketing campaigns. VOL. 24 ISSUE 1199
5: Who Would You Like To Work For? Next, make a list of the companies you believe you'd like to work for. Write down their address and contact information, including the name of the CEO or Manager if you can find it. This information can be found with a little research on the internet but usually a simple search on the company's website with prove sufficient. Lots of local business journals will annually publish a 'Lists' edition of their journal: this will include their top 10 to 25 companies in varying categories, and this could include the largest public and private companies, largest public relations and advertising companies, largest non-profit organizations, and so on. By creating your lists it will help you focus your energies on a smaller group of companies.
6: Get Yourself Organized - and Consider These Next Six Suggestions Get yourself a private cell phone so you're not making calls from your current workplace: get rid of all cute and silly greetings. Have an answering machine at home and ensure your outgoing message is professional. Appearance is very important. Remember - first impressions count! Ensure that you have the right attire for attending interviews. This doesn't mean you need to wear a suit; however your wardrobe should match the industry you're applying to work in. Create a quiet area in your home to devote to your job searching efforts. A home office would be perfect if you have the space. Ensure that your email address is appropriate. Sugary and funny email addresses don't work in a work environment, and certainly won't make a good impression on a potential employer. In all ways you must project the image you want to convey to your employer. Have your references ready. Choose people you trust implicitly. Collect names and their contact details including phone number and email address. You must always ask your references for permission to use them as your reference, then advise them in advance that they may be called in the near future. Be organized! Your organized desk will be your very best friend, particularly when you receive an unexpected call from someone looking to hire. Create a tracking system clearly showing who you have sent resumes to and the job you were applying for. Include as much information for each position as you can. Remember, this is all on you. It's your responsibility to find a job: no-one owes you anything. Put your best effort into this endeavor and sell yourself as a product that people can't do without. You can't depend on family and friends to help you, nor should you. Take the chance; put yourself out there, and be confident that 'your' job is just around the corner.
