Here’s why you need a will, and how to get one By Chris Hogan We all want to do nice things for our loved ones. We go on family trips and celebrate life's wins together. It's sometimes difficult for us to consider the bad things that can happen in life, but we still have to be prepared. That's why having a will is so important! Not having a will in place leaves room for arguments among your loved ones and anyone else who might pop up wanting a piece of your stuff. That’s not okay! The last thing you want to do is add more stress to their lives after you’re gone. This is your legacy we’re talking about here. Do you want to leave that to chance? Protecting your wealth—and your family—with a will is one of the best gifts you can leave to those you love. And with August being National Make-a-Will Month, there’s no better time to get yours done.

What exactly is a will, and why is it important to have one? Your grieving family members won’t automatically know what you wanted them to do with your money or your stuff—you need to tell them. That’s where your will comes in. A will basically establishes a plan for how your stuff is distributed after you die. It’s your way of saying exactly who gets what and what goes where—and getting it down in writing. According to a recent survey conducted by Ramsey Research, almost three out of four parents with kids (74%) don’t have a will in place. That’s a big problem!

How do you make a will? Yanking out a sheet of paper and scribbling “My family gets all my stuff ” isn’t going to cut it. But making a will really isn’t that hard. And in most cases, you don’t even need to go to an expensive lawyer to get one done.

Here are seven quick steps that will help you create a will that sticks:

Decide what to include in your will. This includes a list of your savings and investment accounts, plus the paperwork for your home and any other real estate you own. You also might want to include valuable possessions, like jewelry or cars.

Select your beneficiaries. Now you’ll get to decide how your stuff is split up and who gets what. Maybe you want half of your assets to go to your surviving spouse while the other half is split evenly between your kids. Whatever it is, get it in writing!

Choose an executor for your will. The executor is the person who will read the will and make sure that your wishes explained in the will are carried out. Continued on page 44

WHY DO I NEED A WILL IF I’M YOUNG? Dear Dave, Why do I need a will if I’m still young and haven’t acquired a lot of wealth? Laura Dear Laura, In a case like yours, you don’t need a complicated will. But you do need an inexpensive, basic will. The larger and more complicated your estate is, the more you’d spend on estate planning and a will in order to ensure everything is properly addressed—and to keep the government’s hands off everything. Let’s say you’re in your early- to mid-twenties and single. You have a car and a bank account, and that’s it. In this kind of scenario, it’s going to be easy to work through your estate. But it’s going to take your parents—or whoever’s left—a whole lot longer to get those few simple transactions taken care of if you don’t have a will in place. The other thing you’ll always want to have in your will package is a healthcare power of attorney directive. This includes things like who’s going to make medical decisions for you if you’re unable to make decisions for yourself. As a part of this, you’d want to fill out the paperwork on whether to disconnect life support systems in the event of a coma. These things aren’t fun to think about, but doing it will take a huge burden off the people you love. And all this becomes even more important if you have children, because the state will step in and decide what happens to them if you don’t. Having these things laid out ahead of time, and sharing them with your family and close friends, is a very thoughtful and mature thing to do for those who would be left behind in the event of your death. KEEP THE HOUSE Dear Dave, My wife and I are on Baby Step 2, and the only debt we have is $90,000 in student loans. We bring home about $90,000 a year. In addition to this, we have almost $60,000 in equity in our home. We also have a toddler, plus another baby on the way. Do you think we should sell the house, and rent for a few years, while using the money from the sale of the house to pay down our student loan debt? Chris Dear Chris, No, I wouldn’t sell your home in this situation. You’re going to be out of debt in a couple of years or so, anyway. You’ll just have to lean into it, and make sure you’re living on a strict, written budget. I’m talking about no vacations, and no eating out. You shouldn’t see the inside of a restaurant unless you’re working there. And the new kid’s crib may have to come from a garage sale, but so what? Mine did, too. Want to know something else? I survived without having a rich kid’s nursery, and so did my kids. There’s a price to be paid anytime you decide to get serious about gaining control of your money and cleaning up a financial mess you’ve made. You’re going to have to work like maniacs and have no lives for a while. That might even mean picking up a part-time job at night or on weekends. You’ve got a tough couple of years ahead of you, but I think it’s worth the tradeoff. Keep your house. —Dave

If your job search appears stalled, take this time to review your resume and your overall professional image. This includes your cover letter, professional social media sites such as Linked-In, and your professional references. While any change may require some retraining or new on the job knowledge, changing careers maybe easier then one would think. Examine what parallel industries or other careers use your same talents. Seek out career counseling and take several career tests to help you determine what industries you maybe unaware of that use your qualifications. A career counselor can help you with this decision and provide you some inside knowledge on specific career fields. If you do not have a career counselor, then you may want think about who in your local area hire professionals with your skills and list all the things you loved about your old job. Then look for jobs that have those same qualities. You can also look at things you disliked about your old job, and look for jobs that do not have those qualities. Take a reputable personally or career test and consider jobs that work for your personality type. Name guardians for your children. If you have young children, you need to decide who will take care of them after you’re gone.

Let everyone know beforehand. Your will shouldn’t be a mystery novel. Do yourself a favor and read your will to your beneficiaries before you’re gone. Taking away the element of surprise could save a lot of headaches for them later on.

Sign your will in front of witnesses. Don’t forget this step! A written will is not valid unless it’s signed and dated by the one writing the will, notarized by a notary public, and signed by two witnesses.

Store your will someplace safe. Make sure you put your will, along with other important documents, someplace that is waterproof, fireproof and accessible for loved ones to find. I personally have a wooden box of folders that contains my will and all related documents, filed nicely in a safe place where my family can easily reach it.
