SHOULD YOU BECOME A SONOGRAPHER OR A MEDICAL ASSISTANT? By Lisa J Parmley. As the title implies, Diagnostic Medical Sonographers or ultrasound technologists assume diagnostic responsibilities as related to assessing sonographic images. Sonographers are highly skilled professionals who are proficient at using specialized ultrasound medical equipment and interpreting the images produced. They must use professional judgment when determining the images needed and while interpreting results. The Medical Assistant does limited clinical duties, as directed by physicians and other healthcare professionals, and a variety of administrative duties. It is a more generalized profession than ultrasound technology.
TYPICAL DUTIES OF THE SONOGRAPHER A Diagnostic Medical Sonographer uses medical equipment that produces high frequency sound waves to create visual images of the body's organs, tissues and systems. Using a transducer that sends regular high frequency sound waves into the body, the ultrasound technologist moves it around the skin over the internal structures to be assessed. The sound waves bounce off the tissues, organs and systems, and the computerized medical equipment constructs an image of the internal structures.

TYPICAL DUTIES OF THE MEDICAL ASSISTANT A Medical Assistant performs a wide range of duties under a physician's direction. The job responsibilities may include office work like insurance billing and clinical work like drawing blood. The range of duties assigned is often dependent on the size of the medical office or the type of medical facility where the Medical Assistant works. Review medical history with the patient and ask patient for description of main reason for medical office visit Record, update and maintain patient information, including the medical history and medical test results Escort patients to medical examination rooms, take vital signs and instruct patient on preparing for the physician's exam Maintain patient examination and treatment rooms and treatment room instruments, ensuring everything is kept clean and orderly Prepare medications and administer as required by physician, including giving shots Collect laboratory specimens as directed by physician, including blood, urine and tissue and ensure specimens are properly stored and documented Assist physician in examination room Operate routine diagnostic medical equipment like an electrocardiogram machine or x-ray equipment Call pharmacies convey prescription drug orders or authorize refills Deliver physician instructions to patients, plan diets, explain medical treatments and necessary advance preparations, and review medications and possible side effects Perform medical office duties like answering the phone, scheduling appointments, completing patient checkin procedures, completing insurance forms and other general duties Track and manage medical supplies inventory Continued on page 44

We’ve both been working full time since our wedding, and we were wondering if we should adjust our emergency fund and retirement investing to accommodate all the upcoming life changes that go along with having a bigger family.
What is your opinion on micro investing apps like Acorns and Betterment? Are these good vehicles for building wealth in the long term, and are there any major drawbacks to these types of services?

Dear Rachel,
I’m not saying there’s anything really wrong with Acorns or Betterment, but they do different things. Acorns is more of an invest pennies, round-up kind of program, where Betterment is kind of a robo-investing deal.
When it comes to an emergency fund, I’d stick with what I recommend in the Baby Steps. A good emergency fund of three to six months of expenses should be fine. If you feel safer leaning toward the six-month side, that’s fine. As far as investing is concerned, that’s Baby Step 4. This means 15 percent of your household income going toward retirement. None of that really changes. Now, with another person in the house, your day-to-day expenses are going to increase. That’ll make it even more important to make sure you’re living on a written monthly budget. What you don’t want to do, is quit your job to come home and be a full-time mom, then find yourselves dipping into the emergency fund. Being a stay-athome mom is fine. It’s a wonderful thing if you can afford it. But if that’s the plan you need to budget accordingly, and practice living on just your husband’s income before you quit your job. Here’s the thing. Micro investing is going to create micro wealth. And the big downside is you’re going to feel like you did something important. The way you end up with money is by investing money. The way you end up with more money is by investing more money. You can argue all you want that using things like these create extra money. Yeah, but not really. The returns are still micro. An app doesn’t make two dollars turn into twenty dollars. It’s okay to use apps like that. I’m not mad at them, and I don’t think they’re a rip-off. What worries me about these kinds of things, in an investing sense, is they give the illusion that you’ve done something significant with your money. —Dave

HOW TO BUDGET FOR CHRISTMAS IN JULY BY RACHEL CRUZE Can you believe Christmas is right around the corner? It seems like we were just celebrating the Fourth of July, and now it’s time for another Christmas season. Okay, don’t get mad and protest that I’m bringing up Christmas too early. Even though the actual holiday is still five months away, it’s not too early to budget for it. One of the most frequent stressors I hear about during the holiday season is overspending. So many people have the best intentions— and they want to give to as many people as possible—but those good intentions often come with a lot of bills in January. If you’re worried about overspending this Christmas, the fix is to do a Christmas budget. Here’s how you make a very simple zero-based Christmas budget: Step 1: Decide how much you can spend on Christmas gifts I’m not talking about throwing Christmas parties or decorating your house. This is just about gifts. Last year, 33% of Americans planned to spend $1,000 on Christmas gifts. Now, depending on your family and money situation, that might be a lot or not nearly enough. But chances are you don’t have that kind of cash just lying around in your bank account, which is why you’ll want to start putting a little bit aside each month starting now. For example, let’s take that number and reduce it a little. Let’s say you budget $600 for Christmas gifts. That’s the total amount of money you plan on spending on your family and friends this holiday season. If you start saving for that this month, you’ll need to set aside $120 per month. That’s if you do all your shopping in December. Step 2: List the people you want to buy for, and how much you plan to spend on each Your Christmas budget might look like this: Kid One: $135, Kid Two: $135, Spouse: $50, Mom: $50, Dad: $50 In-Laws: $100, Sister: $30, Friend: $30, Office Secret Santa: $20 Step 3: Subtract all those numbers from the total amount you’ve budgeted for gifts If you end up with zero, then you’ve perfected a zero-based Christmas budget! Every dollar you’ll spend is attached to someone’s name, just like categories in a normal budget. It’s that simple, and all you really need is a sheet of paper. If you prefer a digital budget, check out EveryDollar. It’s the budgeting app I use. Don’t get too caught up in the specifics of this example. Your situation might be totally different. The main thing is being intentional, proactive, and precise with your spending. And when December comes around, your Christmas shopping experience will be much more merry and bright. You’ll be checking everyone off your budget list, instead of spending first and worrying about the consequences later. Merry Christmas in July, and happy budgeting!

The topic of disclosure can be tricky to navigate. You can read article after article on this topic and still feel that you are not 100% sure of whether or not to disclose your disability to an employer. This article provides an insider's perspective of this decision-making process taken from the point of view of several job seekers who have worked with Resource Partnership to obtain employment. Generally speaking, if you do not need a reasonable accommodation to help you perform the basic duties of your job, you do not need to disclose your disability. The decision to disclose a disability will vary greatly depending upon whether the disability is visible or hidden. With a visible disability, employers in most cases will know that a disability exists as soon as you meet them. The question for these job seekers is, does one acknowledge it in the interview? Or even before the interview, let's say in the cover letter or over the phone? If a disability is hidden, the question then becomes, does one need to disclose this disability and if so, when and how? What do you say and what do you not say?

VISIBLE DISABILITIES Job seekers with visible disabilities working with Resource Partnership are split when it comes to the decision of bringing attention to their disability. For some, the decision is made for them due to building accessibility needs. "I always disclose because I need to make sure that the building I would be working in is accessible to a wheelchair," writes one job seeker. Another job seeker says, "An employer can see that I have a disability. If a remark is made about me using a cane, I don't dwell on it, but keep the conversation on my positive attributes instead." This is a common theme among job seekers with disabilities. Another job seeker states, "The only thing I do not allow during the interview process is to let the interviewer focus on it [disability]. I try to take charge of the interview and tell them how we can mutually benefit by hiring me." The same job seeker continues, "If the employer won't overlook my disability and hire me for my skills, then I'd rather not work for that employer anyway." Finally, one more job seeker with a visible disability states, "Disclosure for me is automatic once I get to the interview. It has been a long time since I have had to worry about disclosure. In some ways, it is one less thing I have to worry about."
HIDDEN DISABILITIES For those with a hidden disability, the process is very different. Interestingly, most of the job seekers who were interviewed regarding the decision to disclose a hidden disability decided to disclose it either during the interview process or within their tenure with their respective employers. One job seeker writes, "The symptoms of my disability are triggered by stress. It is important that I inform my employer so that the proper care is given if needed. I disclose after a one month period so that the employer can realize that I have the ability to perform the needed tasks to get the required work accomplished." Another job seeker writes, "All of my co-workers are disabled also. I disclosed and now have a job that I love and that I had to work really hard for. I feel that it was not just because of my disability, but because I am a hard worker."

WORDS OF WISDOM FROM JOB SEEKERS It may take some time for you to figure out what is best for you to do when it comes to disclosure. It may mean that in interview situations you explore different options before you settle in on what works best for you. Whatever your decision is, be confident in yourself, the skills you have, and your abilities. I leave you now with some selected words of wisdom on this topic from Resource Partnership job seekers... "I never raised the issue at work perhaps because I wanted to be evaluated like everyone else. Nevertheless, one should discuss the issue with an employer if he or she feels it has an impact on an essential job function." "To disclose or not to disclose is up to the individual job seeker. I would say it depends on the job seeker's comfort level and the situation or surrounding circumstances." "If you have a disability that is visible or one that you know could be affected by the work environment, disclose, but make sure you are up front with them, letting them know that you do not want to be treated any different and with the same respect that they would give to the average employee." "One thing I feel strongly about whether you decide to disclose or not is to make sure that you are comfortable with your disability because your confidence of who you are will show in an interview. One must weigh the pros and cons of each situation. It may even change from interview to interview. Just be comfortable with whom you are, and, should you decide to disclose, I feel strongly not to allow that disclosure to be the focus during the interview. Talks of accommodations can always be made after the job offer is in hand." Jennifer Seamans joined the Resource Partnership as an Employment Specialist in January 2004. Diagnostic Medical Sonographers earn twice as much as Medical Assistants. This is according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' May 2012 occupational wages survey. Sonographers earned an average annual wage of $66,360 or $31.90 per hour.

During the same time period, Medical Assistants earned an average annual wage of $30,550 or $14.69 per hour. The average annual wage scale for ultrasound technologists was $44,990 to $91,070. For Medical Assistants it was $21,080 to $41,570.
COMPARING TRAINING REQUIREMENTS Two of the reasons for the salary differential include the fact that Diagnostic Medical Sonographers are trained at a higher skills level because they do diagnostic work, and they must use judgment concerning the number and type of images produced. Most employers now require that sonographers complete a sonography program at a school accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and earn ARDMS registration. According to the American Job Center Network O*Net Online, 47 percent of sonographers have an Associate's degree, 17 percent have a Bachelor's degree, and 19 percent have some college but no degree. Approximately 72 percent of Medical Assistants have some college and no degree, 18 percent have an Associate's degree, and 10 percent have a high school diploma or equivalent. Diagnostic Medical Sonographers may find employment in a variety of healthcare facilities that include hospitals, clinics, physician offices and mobile units. A medical assistant is likely to find employment in medical offices and clinics, or ambulatory care facilities.
