Woodworker Nicole Schillaci - Interviewed by Elka Torpey

What do you do?

I own and operate a custom woodworking shop. We manufacture architectural pieces, such as doors, windows, moldings, trim, and cabinets. Doing custom work means that if someone comes in with a piece of trim that’s 150 years old, we can reproduce it.

Right now I have an entire house’s worth of millwork laid out in my shop. It’s for a new construction that is meant to look like an old Victorian home.

Describe a typical day I might be doing drawings for different custom tooling or figuring out the design by mocking it up. For example, I’ll make part of a piece to figure out how something will go together.

I’ll make a roughcut list of the quantity of material I need, doing calculations to figure out how to maximize it.

I’m also pulling out pieces from my inventory to work with.

How did you prepare for your job?

My training was pretty much in the field, working in the trade.

I first started working in a cabinet and furniture shop in high school.

Then I went to college and started doing bench carpentry work.

I was working alongside master craftspeople and learning from them.

My last job before I opened my own shop was with an architectural millwork company that specializes in historic restoration. We made window sashes, doors, moldings, things like that.

How does your education tie in with your career?

I use math, such as geometry and trigonometry. For the business aspect, communication skills are essential so you can present yourself well and communicate clearly with clients.

HOW MUCH EMERGENCY FUND?

Dear Dave,

I know you talk about having an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses set aside. My husband and I are having a difficult time agreeing on exactly how much we should set aside for emergencies. How do you determine the exact amount?

I’m new to investing, and recently I began putting money into growth stock mutual funds inside a Roth IRA. On my last statement, it said that my investment had grown. Can you explain how it grew?

Matt Dear Matt, In most cases, you’ll have anywhere from 90 to 200 different company’s stocks in a growth stock mutual fund. Over a period of time, some of them will go up and some will go down. If the overall effect is that the group is worth more now than it was before, you made money. The value of that overall group of stocks went up, in other words.

Okay, now pay close attention to what I’m about to say next. I love the fact that you’re investing and thinking about the future. It shows wisdom and maturity to be able to grasp the need for a good financial plan now and in the years ahead. However, I’d advise you to not put any more money into that investment until you understand exactly what it is and how it works.

Talk to your financial advisor immediately, and let him or her know you’re not clear on things. A quality investing professional has the heart of a teacher. Someone like this will take as much time as necessary to better explain your investment, your options, and answer other questions so you can become an informed investor and, over time, make your own wise investing decisions.

Erin Dear Erin, The exact you amount you have in your emergency fund—whether it’s three, four, five, or six months of expenses—is really more about peace of mind than anything else. Still, there are a few practical things to consider.

If you both have very stable jobs, you’d probably be okay saving three or four months of expenses. But if one of you is self-employed, makes most of their money through commissions, or only one of you works outside the home, it would make more sense to have five or six months of expenses set aside.

Of course, you can always compromise while leaving room for growth. There’s nothing wrong starting out with three months of expenses saved, then adding more as time goes by. The main thing is that you’re both in agreement, and you both feel safe with the amount of money in your emergency fund!

In the tough job market we have today, the time it takes to research, apply for jobs, interview and eventually land one takes even longer than it has in the past. In a perfect world, we'd be able to devote 12 hours a day into the job search until we landed that perfect position; but let's be real, that's not possible and it's not healthy either.

That's why it's important to have a game plan for your job searching activities to avoid wasted time, frustration and burnout.

When I first found myself unemployed after college, I was so stressed about finding a job quickly that I devoted myself to constantly being on my computer searching and applying for jobs. Every time I was home, my laptop was open with the objective of looking for jobs. It was the first thing I did in the morning and even when I ate or sat down to watch a movie, I had those career sites open next to me. Soon I began to feel that job searching was the only thing I was really doing, and it quickly became discouraging and draining.

In order to make your time most useful, you should focus your energy on particular tasks each day and organize your time wisely. Set weekly goals for yourself-explore new career websites, make a list of organizations you want to research, find positions you want to apply for, create social networking profiles and network. Unfortunately, you typically have to apply to many job postings before hearing back from one. Try to stay focused and motivated. Keep in mind that you're not only competing with recent grads, you're also competing with professionals of all levels who may have several more years of work experience than you do, so don't be discouraged if you apply to numerous positions without hearing back.

Take your job searching process seriously, but don't let it take over your life. Dedicate time to physical fitness and social activities and never underestimate the importance of developing new skills. Enrolling in a relevant course, taking up a new hobby or learning a foreign language will serve as a constructive use of your time and will also help you to become a more marketable candidate.

Remember to be patient and target your job search to the right positions. Stay positive and persevere!

My best advice is to devote a few hours every day to the job searching process (preferably around the same time each day so you can develop a routine). The rest of the time you can spend improving your skills, taking courses, practicing hobbies, and enjoying your time with family and friends. This way, you'll spend time searching and applying for jobs, but you'll also maintain a healthy balance. It may be hard for you to pull yourself away from job searching after a few hours at first, but it's better to spend focused, productive time job searching rather than long periods of time where you are tired and wasting time. Trust me, in the long-run you'll be much happier and you'll also end up being more productive.

Good questions. I have never been a fan of the sales strong-arm approach where you push for the job and blatantly ask for it at the end. I haven’t seen it work, and it can turn off employers.

There is a much more effective way to end the interview and leave the employer with a strong impression of you.

The 60-second sell is your tool to spark an employer’s interest to close out your interview. This 60-second verbal business card will summarize your skills, abilities and previous experience in a well-thought-out fashion that will immediately make the employer know why they should hire you. The 60-second sell is a proven shortcut to your success. Many career counseling clients have reported it was the best job-search technique they’d ever used. It’s easy to create and easy to implement.

significantly improved because you will be able to do the most important thing necessary to land a job—get the employer to recall you and your abilities.

How Do You Close The Employer?

When the interview is at its end, and you’ve asked your questions, and they have explained what will be next, most people say goodbye. You are not going to do that. Instead, you are going to say, “Thank you for the opportunity to learn about your position. I’m very interested in this job. In closing, let me summarize for you what I bring to the position.” Then you conclude with your verbal business card, what I call the 60-second sell. It is most effective because once you are done saying it, you leave and the employer takes notes and evaluates you as an applicant. The 60-second sell offers your top five selling points for performing the job. Here’s how it works.

Begin With A Five-Point Agenda The five-point agenda is a hiring strategy created to focus on the needs of the employer and the job to be done. The five-point agenda is a predetermined analysis in which you select your five most marketable points and repeatedly illustrate these points throughout the interview process. It is this repetition and reiteration of exactly how you’ll meet her needs that allows the employer to remember something about you. My clients have tested this interview approach with the following results: •

They credited the five-point agenda and the 60-second sell as being the two techniques that secured the job offer.

Job hunters are often amazed to learn that an interviewer can ask you questions for an entire hour and not hear one word you’ve said. He may be bored, frustrated or unimpressed with your image or the first few answers. After interviewing several people, all the candidates begin to blend together.

I experienced this when I hire people, and countless other employers continuously confirm this fact. The five-point agenda quickly captures an employer’s interest because you are continually emphasizing exactly how you can do the job right from the start.

The Formula: Creating Your Strategy Examine your previous experience. Write out the key responsibilities for each job you’ve held. Note any special accomplishments. Zero in on your essential work strengths— those abilities where you excel and are most productive.

Check with your contacts and use your network to get as much background as possible about the employer, the company, and the position’s needs. Many times, your contacts will point out the very aspects that must make up your five-point agenda.

Other times, there will be little information available, and you will need to guess based on your general knowledge about performing the job.

After reviewing the employer’s and position’s needs, determine which of your abilities and which aspects of your experience will be most relevant to the employer. Then create your fivepoint agenda, selecting each point to build a robust picture emphasizing how you can do the best job.

For example, Engineer This major automotive manufacturer required experience in both quality assurance and new product design. The candidate’s five-point agenda was: •

Point 1: Implemented new four-year quality-assurance program that received a national Quality 1 Award.

Point 2: Effectively dealt with employee resistance to quality improvements.

Point 3: Conducted on-site inspections of 37 suppliers to improve the quality of parts received.

Point 4: Five years’ design engineering experience.

•

Point 5: Excellent communication skills when working with both technical and nontechnical staff.

Create Your 60-Second Sell The 60-second sell allows you to summarize your most marketable strengths briefly and concisely. Successful job hunters have found the 60-second sell: •

Was effective in capturing the employer’s attention.

•

Provided excellent, concise answers to tricky questions.

•

Was very easy to use.

•

It was a memorable way to end an interview.

The 60-second sell is a 60-second statement that you customize for each interview, and that summarizes and links together with your five-point agenda. You will want to put the points of your five-point agenda into an order that allows you to present them in the most logical and effective manner. When you link the ideas into sentences, they should be said in 60 seconds or less. Once memorized, this statement will be easy for you to recall and use to close the interview.

To continue with our example: Engineer Using his 60-second sell, this applicant was able to get the job offer. His 60-second sell went something like this: “For my last employer, I implemented a new quality-assurance program for seven plants over four years. We received the Q 1 Award for our efforts. Along the way, I’ve learned to effectively deal with employee resistance to quality improvements through training, selling teamwork concepts,and utilizing a personal empowerment approach. I have evaluated 37 suppliers during on-site inspections to improve the quality of their product— parts that will ultimately become pieces of my company’s final product. My five years in design engineering and my strong communication skills have aided me in my ability to work with a diverse population and solve technical problems. These are the reasons I feel I would make a valuable contribution to your company.”

Summary Both the 60-second sell and the five-point agenda must be customized and created for each interview. They may vary slightly or greatly based on what you determine to be that employer’s most essential needs and your most marketable abilities to meet those needs. These tools allow you to take control of the interview and get the employer to recognize the kind of skills and contributions you will bring to the job and the organization. As you are leaving, you offer the very best reasons why they should hire you when concluding with your 60-second sell.

Continued from page 6 Studying sculpture at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design gave me a more critical eye and taught me how to look at things correctly, such as how to tell when something is out of proportion.

But you don’t really need a degree to do what I do. I went to college because I was interested in art. I had an interest in furniture design, and I thought studying art would help me further that interest. Furniture designing didn’t really go anywhere for me, though.

What inspired you to pursue carpentry?

Wood, to me, is magical; it’s beautiful. Working with wood when I was a kid in my dad’s workshop, I was drawn to the material more than anything. I wanted to try making a career of it.

How do you get projects?

Mostly by word of mouth. My shop regularly works with a handful of contractors and architects. I’ll do the design work, or clients will show me their drawings and say, “Make this.” Or they’ll bring in old wood or pieces of things they want remade.

What do you like most about your job?

There are a lot of things. I love my work, and I’ve always been compensated well for it.

I get to use a variety of different machines and hand tools, like a joiner, table saw, and chisel. But mostly, I like producing something tangible at the end of the day.

What’s your best advice?

Find a mentor. Listen, and take in as much as you can from people who have been doing this kind of work for a long time.

When thinking about where to work, know that, in bigger shops, it’s more like an assembly line. In smaller shops, there may not be as much opportunity to move up the ladder. But be patient. You’ll definitely be learning a lot.
