Dave Says BY DAVE RAMSEY

Is Loaning or Giving Helping?

Confirmation of payoff?

Dear Dave,

Dear Dave,

The guy who has been my best friend since g rade school recentl y asked me to loan him $5,000. All I have in savings in $5,000, but I would be willing to give him $1,000. The problem is that while he’s a great friend with a good heart, he’s always getting himself into binds when it comes to money. Do you think I should give him $1,000?

After struggling with it for several years, I finally made the last payment on my Sallie Mae student loans this week. Do you think I should ask for a formal letter stating that it’s officially paid off?

Israel

Congratulations on finally kicking that old woman out of your house! It feels great, doesn’t it?

Dear Israel, If I were in your shoes, and I was going to give this guy a fifth of ever ything I had, I’d want to know it was going to save his life. From what you’ve said, it sounds like he’s just out of control with his money while you’re tr ying to save. That being the case, I’m not sure you’d really be helping him. Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money and business. He has authored five New York Times best-selling books, including The Total Money Makeover. The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 8.5 million listeners each week on more than 550 radio stations. Follow Dave on Twitter at @DaveRamsey and on the web at daveramsey.com.

26

Vol. 20 Issue 1017 December 4 - December 11, 2015

If you want to gift your friend some money, then do it. But there’s no way I’d tell you to give him ever ything you’ve managed to save. And I certainly wouldn’t do it as a loan. Ask yourself if you believe deep down in your heart that giving this guy $1,000 would truly be a blessing to him or if, by doing it, you’d be acting as an enabler and basically just funding more of his stupidity with money. From what you’ve told me, I think there’s a good chance the answer is the latter. And if that’s the case, you can be a much better friend by saying you love him enough to not ruin your friendship. —Dave

Angela Dear Angela,

Sure, it couldn’t hurt anything to write and request formal confirmation that the book on your loans is closed and ever ything is paid in full. You can do this through email so you’ll have a record of contact, or you can send a certified letter, return receipt requested, through the post office. That way, you’ll have a record they signed for it. Following up on paid-off debts is always a good idea, Angela. You don’t want the hassle of possibly having to deal with greedy or incompetent collectors sniffing around three or four years down the road and no way to prove you’re free and clear! —Dave

Handling the Dreaded

by Robin Ryan

“You’re Overqualified”Challenge Seems I continually hear this complaint, “They aren’t hiring me because I’m overqualified.” One man wrote an e-mail to me concerned about this problem: “I have a lot of incredible extracurricular professional activities, publishing expertise, project management experience, board leadership skills, etc. I have an MBA, and am a CPA. All of this info is on my resume because it sets me apart. However, I am concerned that people are viewing me as overqualified for lower level jobs and eliminating me. Yet, the jobs I am truly qualified for are fairly high up because of all of the varied experience. I’m not being considered due to lack of specific industry experience. Help!” So what should you do if you are credentialed with good experience, advanced education, and are looking to get re-employed, and are even willing to take a lower level position? Here are a few tips: DON’T BE TEMPTED TO “DUMB DOWN!” This strategy moves your career backwards. You typically end up frustrated, not hired, or worse -you find a new job you can’t wait to move out of. Most employers today want you working at your ability level since productivity is key to everyone’s success, and they want to retain you past the many months it takes to train you for the job so you can begin to make a contribution to the company. DO SOME SOUL SEARCHING AND SAVVY PREPARATION. Acknowledge that employers are reluctant to hire a person who is overqualified because they think the person is unlikely to be happy, won’t stay long, might want the interviewer’s job, or may expect fast promotion. They may think you aren’t seriously interested in just doing the job for which you are being hired. Nor do employers want someone who is burnt out and who sees their job as an easy paycheck. Sometimes you can be threatening to the interviewer, especially if you are truly suited for the interviewer’s job. Examine why you want the

position. “I need a job!” is not a response that will endear you to them. You must use your communication skills to convince them why a demotion is a good option. You must create a reasonable explanation, such as less travel requirements. DON’T SHOW DESPERATION. You may feel it, but it will work against your getting hired if you show how frantic you are to get a job. Too often an executive says, “I’ll start at any job just to get my foot in the door.” That won’t work – it’s an outdated strategy. Being willing to take any job often makes the interviewer disqualify you. They need a competent person to perform the specific job they are hiring for. You must show not only that you can do it, but also that you want to do it. Stress some key skills that would be a major plus in the position. LOOK HARDER FOR POSITIONS FOR WHICH YOU ARE QUALIFIED. Employers want good fits. Customize every cover letter you write and tweak your resume to match the opportunity. Be sure to address the major needs required and demonstrate results you have achieved in line with the level requested. NETWORK! Ask colleagues, friends, former employees, college alumni, and other contacts for referrals to new people who can help you uncover unadvertised positions. Department of Labor statistics reveal that 63% of all jobs last year were found through contacts so network, network, NETWORK!

I am concerned that people are viewing me as overqualified for lower level jobs and eliminating me. Yet, the jobs I am truly qualified for are fairly high up because of all of the varied experience. I’m not being considered due to lack of specific industry experience. Help!

Advantages of

Schools

Though vocational school is often seen as a less attractive alternative to a traditional college or university, vocational schools offer students many advantages over a traditional four year college or university. Also known as trade schools or technical colleges, vocational schools provide training to teach students the skills and knowledge to succeed in a variety of professions. Some possible professions for vocational school graduates include auto mechanics, carpenters or electricians.

Job Specific Training

Cost

While traditional colleges and universities offer courses of study in a wide range of fields, vocational schools provide training that prepares students for work in a specific career field. This is one significant advantage of vocational schools, as a student will graduate from a vocational school ready to work in the job market. For example, a vocational school may offer courses of study in plumbing, masonry, welding and auto repair, all of which prepare a student for a specific career.

Another advantage of vocational school is that the yearly cost of tuition is generally less than tuition at a college or university. However, a student who attends a vocational school instead of a college or university will also see significant savings due to the shorter length of training. While vocational schools are less expensive than colleges and universities, the costs can be significant. However, most vocational schools do provide students access to government funded and privately funded sources of financial aid.

Job Demand Length Unlike a traditional four year course of study at a college or university, most vocational school programs last from one to two years. In fact, many programs of study allow a student to complete vocational training in less than one year. This shorter period of study is a significant advantage for those students attending a vocational school. By graduating more quickly, a graduate from a vocational school will be earning money in the workforce while those attending a college or university are still in school. The shorter course of study offered by vocational schools is a major advantage for working students who can only attend classes in the evening hours. A part-time student at a college or university may take many years to complete a degree program, while most vocational schools programs are designed students. Vol. 20 for Issuepart-time 1017

44 December 4 - December 11, 2015

Though graduates from a traditional college or university may struggle to land a job after leaving school, many vocational schools place the vast majority of graduates in a position related to the graduate’s field of study immediately upon graduation. This is due to the high demand for qualified workers in many fields that vocational schools provide training for. Many vocational schools also provide students the opportunity to gain working experience while in school. Not only does this allow the student to gain real world skills, but if the student does a good job in the position, the employer may offer the student a job upon graduation.

ightening a bolt might seem simple, but what if that bolt is 1,000 feet underwater? For commercial divers, the ocean floor is an everyday workspace. Despite the exotic location, the jobs they do can be surprisingly familiar.

“Usually we’re construction workers,” says commercial diver Ron Null. “The tasks we do are routine. But it’s not a routine environment.” And that means that even a simple task becomes more complicated. Commercial divers build, repair, and inspect structures that are submerged in liquid. These divers might weld underwater cracks in deep-sea oil rigs, lay the foundation for a bridge piling, inspect pipes in water treatment plants, or rig and remove a 300,000-pound concrete remnant from the bottom of a river.

Because their work is so varied, commercial divers must be able to adapt. “You need to be as flexible as possible,” says Ron. “Some days we are making very sensitive measurements, some days we’re repairing a septic tank, and some days we’re just digging a ditch.”

what order.

Then the divers suit up, put on their helmets or masks, and jump or slide into the water.

Many jobs involve working with engineers to inspect bridges and other structures. “We are the eyes, ears, and hands for engineers,” says Ron. “We inspect for them, measure, and note what we see.” Often, divers carry video cameras so that engineers can watch them as they work.

But whatever they’re doing, divers are usually working wet - in dive suits designed for the type of liquid they’re in and the pressure they’re under.

Divers say that working underwater can be a strange experience. The equipment is bulky. Movement is limited. And conditions are often cold and dark. Because it’s dark, the work is tactile: Workers know where things are by feeling for them. “On the bottom of the ocean floor, you might be surrounded by concrete forms and tools,” says Ron. “But over time, you come to know just where the right wrench is.”

Divers often work in teams, with some divers in the water and others helping from the shore or on a boat. Each day begins with a briefing describing safety issuesVol.and who will do each underwater task and in 20 Issue 1017

While underwater, a diver is in continual communication with helpers and other divers on the surface. These workers watch airhoses, clock time underwater, maintain logs, and give the diver instructions

and assistance. When the diver finishes in the water, he or she usually dries off, warms up, puts away equipment, and then goes to the boat deck to help the next diver. Efficiency is important because div¬ers can spend only a specific amount of time submerged, depending on the water depth and the equipment they are using. Every minute submerged is expensive because of the logistics involved. The best divers are clear thinkers who work quickly and improvise to solve problems. Divers need to adjust gradually to normal atmospheric pressure after a deep dive. This process is called decompression. If the dive is very deep, divers spend hours in a decompres¬sion chamber that gradually reduces the pressure around them.

Most divers are never seriously injured, though, in part because of their training. “If you don’t pay attention, you can get yourself into a dangerous situation,” says Ron. “But the job is not inherently dangerous.” But the absence of danger does not mean that the work is always pleasant. Unlike scuba divers, who swim through beautiful scenery, commercial divers work in debris. And the many divers who work on offshore oil rigs must live aboard ships for months. This time spent away from family is the biggest drawback for most divers. Many divers start out working on oil rigs be¬cause opportunities are plentiful, the pay is good, and the job provides a chance to travel the world. Divers who want more time at home can work inland on dams, bridges, ports, and shipyards.

IAL D IVER Unless these and other safety procedures are followed, divers can suffer from decompression sickness or other illnesses. In some cases, divers must protect themselves from hazardous liquids and heavy equipment.

The difficulties divers face are reflected in their pay. Divers usually earn more than most other construction, installation, and repair workers, and the potential for very high wages is often greater. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, commercial divers who worked as employees earned a median of $22.06 an hour in May 2014, meaning that half of divers earned more than that amount and half earned less. Ten percent of divers earned more than $40.46, and 10 percent earned less than $14.07. Just as in other construction careers, though, pay can be sporadic. “You can work for 9 months straight but then be unemployed for 3,” says Ron. “I tell young divers that they Continued on page 54

Commercial Diver from p. 53

should plan and save for a rainy day.” Despite the financial uncertainty, some divers see a variable schedule as freedom. Most people are attracted to diving by a sense of adventure, as well as by the promise of a well-paying career. “I’ve seen places all over the world that I never would have seen if I hadn’t been a diver,” says Ron. “You can work in Singapore, in Italy, be up in the mountains, or on an island—really, anywhere.” Like most divers, Ron worked as a divers’ helper - or tender - for about 3 years before getting into the water professionally. Now he works as a supervisor and consultant. He plans dives and helps engineers figure out how to use diving to solve problems. But he still dives, too. Anyone can be a diver, Ron says, even if he or she can’t swim well. The most important skill for a diver is to be able to do mechanical work. “Lots of farm kids who learned how to fix their parents’ tractors make very good divers,” he says, “even if they never saw the water.” Knowing a trade, such as welding or ironwork, is also helpful. Nearly all divers go to diving school. Schooling usually lasts a few months and varies in quality. Those schools accredited by the Association of Commercial Diving Educators are often the most comprehensive. Employers suggest looking for schools that offer hands-on experience, low tuition, and job placement assistance. Beyond this training, teamwork is what Ron looks for in new hires. And camaraderie is something he likes best about his work. “There’s always a common goal of achievement,” he says. He gains satisfaction from working together with other divers to see something built. Conditions are sometimes rough, but after 30 years, Ron still loves the work. “During a job, I might be standing on deck in the rain and the wind, after long hours, and thinking, ‘I’ll never do this work again,’” he says. “But a few months later, I’m laughing with the guys who were with me, and I want to get back out there.”

One of the most important objectives of the mrW Foundation is to continually provide opportunities for financial aid to help those qualified individuals who are interested in learning a skill and mastering a trade. Toward that goal, we are continually creating a variety of scholarship programs with like-minded institutions and organizations. Each program has it’s own nuances but all are similar in that they intend to further Mike’s “PR Campaign for Hard Work.”

How TO WRITE a RESUME for the

rom oil drillers and rig workers to support positions like truck drivers and back office personnel, there are literally hundreds of job categories to choose from in the Oil and Gas industry. Those oil and gas field jobs tend to pay above average wages - in some cases providing six-digit incomes even for those without a college degree. That does not mean, however, that those jobs are easy to come by. On the contrary, there is fierce competition for everything from truck driving jobs to careers in petroleum engineering and exploration. That means it is more important than ever before for both experienced oil and gas workers and newcomers to have a great resume. As with any career, a great resume can be the key to success in the oil and gas industry. A great resume should tell potential employers just what sets you apart and makes you

Some parts of the oil and gas resume should be standard, while others should be tailored to the industry itself. Your resume will naturally need to include your full contact information, as well as your name and vital statistics. That information needs to be part of any good resume, no matter what the industry. Other sections of the resume should be focused directly on the needs of the oil and gas industry. Job candidates who already have experience in this unique industry should use the resume to highlight that experience. While many of those popular and well paying oil and gas industry jobs are open to newcomers, company managers often favor more experienced candidates. Highlighting any relevant oil and gas experience in the career section of the resume is a great way to stand out from the crowd and send that resume to the top of the pile. Many workers in the new oil and gas exploration boom have military experience - either in directly related fields or in support positions. That military training can be a real boon to job seekers, and the resume is the perfect place to highlight that experience. That relevant experience can take any number of forms - from an Iraqi veteran who used to guard wells in the war zone to a member of the National Guard who drove trucks and operated heavy equipment around the world. No matter what the experience, it should be highlighted in the

relevant portions of the resume. The education section of the resume provides yet another opportunity to highlight training and experience related to the oil and gas industry. That education does not necessarily have to be a degree in petroleum engineering - it could be as simple as a successfully completed course in environmental science or chemical safety. The key is to show how the training you do have relates to the oil and gas industry. Jobs in the oil and gas industry are among the most lucrative available. Tailoring your resume to the needs of that industry can increase your odds of landing the job and securing your financial future.
