MUD ENGINEERING OVERVIEW

Mud engineering is a sub-specialty of petroleum engineering, which is itself closely related to chemical engineering. The mud engineer (also known as a Drilling Fluid Technician) is an integral part of the process of drilling a new oil well, because specially constructed mud of a particular consistency is used to aid in the removal of drilled material from the wellhead as the drill bit progresses towards the oil reservoir. According to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, mud engineering is such a specialized discipline that most relevant training in the field is done by the company currently employing the prospective mud engineer. Each company engaged in drilling operations has its own methods and so its own requirements for a mud engineer. Because of the specialized training offered, a degree in engineering is not an absolute requirement in order to become a mud engineer, though the technical nature of the mud engineer’s position makes an engineering background highly desirable.

Once the degree is under your belt, apply for a position at a company involved in the drilling of oil wells. Many companies are involved in drilling a new oil well, not just the major energy conglomerates like BP, Exxon, or Shell. These energy majors are concerned with the exploration of new oil reservoirs, getting the oil, refining it, and bringing it to market. Different companies may drill the wells and even own the well structure itself. Once employed at a relevant company, be sure to express an interest in mud engineering operations and the desire to work in mud engineering to supervisors once a reputation for ability and dedication has been established. Few companies like to put an employee through extensive training only to have that employee jump to a different employer. Typically, mud engineers are trained and hired through internal corporate processes. In order to be accepted into a company

GET EDUCATED Although a specific degree in an engineering discipline is not a prerequisite for obtaining training as a mud engineer, it is still almost always necessary to obtain a four year bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. And while an engineering degree may not be an absolute prerequisite due to the specialized training specific to each employer, a knowledge of engineering principles, math and chemistry is essential to success. A degree in a discipline that requires quite a bit of science and mathematics coursework is ideal, due to the technical nature of the work. However, even a technically minded business major can make a successful mud engineer - knowledge of management techniques and project organization can make a mud engineer’s career more successful and lucrative.

For many people, earthquakes cause fear. But Graham Kent isn’t afraid. He studies and learns from earthquakes as a seismologist and director of the Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno. Seismology is the scientific study of earthquakes and related phenomena, such as volcanic eruptions. Earthquakes occur when the tectonic plates that make up the Earth’s crust shift and release energy in the form of waves. These seismic waves, which move through the Earth’s molten core, can cause destruction on the surface by damaging structures, warping roads and bridges, and injuring living things. Graham’s work is about more than just earthquakes, though. Seismologists also apply what they learn from studying the Earth’s structure and other geological events, such as tsunamis, for commercial and other purposes, such as detecting nuclear explosions.

Seismologists often have additional responsibilities, regardless of their focus. In overseeing the lab, for example, Graham manages budgets and completes administrative work. “A lot of what I do involves paperwork, which takes up a large amount of time,” he says.

RESEARCH.

Research seismologists study the internal structure of the Earth and try to determine factors that contribute to or foretell an earthquake. They publish their findings in scientific journals or present them at academic forums—or do both. Their work helps guide engineering and building practices to improve safety wherever earthquakes are common. In addition to conducting their own projects, research seismologists usually teach collegeor graduate-level courses and supervise students’ work. Universities and government entities, such as the U.S. Geological Survey, employ most of these seismologists.

Observation.

Seismologists who focus on observation record and analyze data from the thousands of earthquakes, both big and small, that occur around the world every year.

What they do

Seismologists’ tasks vary, depending on their area of focus. Some seismologists conduct research, for example; others directly observe earthquakes. Still others use their expertise in practical applications. Their work also may combine these Vol. 20 different Issue 1002 areas of focus.

They often work in observatories or analysis centers, which are usually built and supported by universities or national governments. For example, Graham’s laboratory studies all earthquakes that occur in Nevada. The laboratory staff, which includes seismologists and students, maps each earthquake and collects associated data, such as its precise location and magnitude. This information is communicated to relief workers in order to aid residents in the affected area.

Applications.

Instead of studying earthquakes, some seismologists apply their knowledge to commercial or other uses. For example, they may use

sound waves to aid the energy industry in finding oil deep under the Earth’s crust. Seismology also can help detect nuclear explosions. These explosions create seismic waves that can be identified at great distances, so seismologists help monitor whether countries are complying with nuclear test bans.

How they prepare

To become a seismologist, you need specific skills and a graduate degree. Graham suggests also having a range of interests. “You need to be a bit of an explorer, a bit of an engineer,” he says. “It’s important to have a wide toolset and be able to take in all kinds of information and make something useful out of it.”

Skills.

Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are essential for seismologists. Their work often involves collecting and analyzing data to develop solid conclusions. Seismologists should also work well independ e n t l y, s o m e t i m e s with limited information. “There is no sign that says ‘Dig here!’ in our work,” says Graham. “You need to be comfortable striking out on your own and working without specific direction.”

But just because seismologists are self-directed doesn’t mean they work alone. Interpersonal skills are imperative for seismologists, because they are often part of a team that includes other scientists, researchers, and students. And seismologists need good communication skills to write papers, present their work, and speak clearly about complex topics.

Education.

Employment & wages.

How much education prospective seismologists get depends on what they want to do—but they should plan to earn a master’s degree if they want to do fieldwork, says Graham: “To work as a seismologist in the field, a Ph.D. is too much and a bachelor’s degree is not enough.” During fieldwork, seismologists travel to earthquake-prone areas to collect data and physical specimens for lab analysis. Coursework usually includes subjects such as geology, math, and physics. Knowledge of data analysis software is also important. Most seismologists who observe earthquakes or apply their knowledge commercially have a master’s degree in geophysics or a related science. However, some entry-level positions may be available for workers with a bachelor’s degree. Other areas of study, such as engineering, are also acceptable. Seismologists focusing in research or teaching usually need a Ph.D. Conducting fieldwork and getting laboratory experience, such as by using data to create computer simulations of earthquakes, are good ways

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not collect data specific to seismologists. Instead, BLS counts seismologists among geoscientists, a more general category that also includes geologists and oceanographers. In May 2013, there were 34,690 geoscientists, excluding hydrologists and geographers, according to BLS. Their median annual wage was $91,920, compared with a median wage of $35,080 for all workers. Within the occupation of geoscientist, wages vary by industry. For example, the median wage for geoscientists, excluding hydrologists and geographers, in federal, state, and local government was $79,770 in May 2013; the median wage for this occupation in oil and gas extraction was nearly double that: $142,860.

Challenges & rewards.

Among the perks of being a seismologist, says Graham, is working on projects that keep communities safe—sometimes in unexpected ways. For example, Graham’s seismology lab is leading an effort to install potentially life-saving fire cameras on mountaintops in northern California, an outgrowth of seismic monitoring equipment his team set up previously. “The cameras allow firefighters to watch over areas that are difficult to access after lightning storms,” he says. “They can detect forest fires long before they become a threat to people.” But some projects require seismologists to get permits for installing cameras or seismometers, instruments that measure seismic waves and collect other data, on protected federal lands. And that task is sometimes challenging. “We can’t always get permits for what we want to do,” says Graham. “It can really stifle our research.”

Even if permits are available, securing the funding needed for a project can be difficult. Seismologists apply for grants from governments or nonprofit organizations by submitting a description of the project and its costs. But money for these projects is limited, and seismologists compete with other scientific projects for the same funds. Each activity during the Academy also focused on developing vital professional soft skills like teamwork and communication, in order to prepare students for the workplace. Presentations and videos were provided to implement industry-modeled “Lunch and Learn” events to further explore various topics, including: educational options, career pathways, and the skills necessary to obtain careers in manufacturing. The program’s culminating event was a mock Career Fair with representatives from local industries participating as interviewers and mentors. Students presented their resumes and portfolios during conversations with real manufacturers, and students’ families had a first-hand opportunity to witness the effects of positive career guidance.

Also during the program, students were introduced to manufacturing by local industry leaders such as Air Products, who presented a liquid nitrogen ice cream demonstration, and Shell Deer Park and the Port of Houston Authority who provided students a tour of their facilities. Finally, San Jacinto College participated in the students’ final “Lunch and Learn” to discuss educational pathways for the careers they had been exposed to throughout the week. Dream It. Do It. ASK DIANA Q: I am a computer science professor who is moving back into the industry, & interviewing has been interesting. I’ve had about six interviews, & the questions that I have been asked sometimes throw me. It seems apparent that the people interviewing me have a negative opinion about academia & tend to believe that we are not supervised & don’t have deadlines. One person asked me several times if I were able to take direction. Believe me that I get a lot of direction from supervisors! I was surprised by one question that the company asked my recruiter. She told me about it, & I emailed a long response to her. It wasn’t as polished as it would have been if I were sending it directly to the company. I told her that I would send a more professional letter but was surprised to learn she had already forwarded it to them. It was pretty direct, & I would have toned it down a little before sending. On the plus side, that company is supposed to give me an offer on Monday. I tend to not judge my interviewers much during the interview, but after evaluating, I think they would be easy people to get along with & will probably accept the offer. I wonder if the letter helped or hurt. Another question that I have is about the interviewing process when you are using a recruiter. I hear that they try to schedule three candidates to interview for each position. Is it true

that they have two that fit & one that is different & might or might not work? I have been wondering if I am being presented as the odd one because of my teaching background. BTW, I still have interviews scheduled for Monday & Tuesday. -Houston, Texas Reader

A: More than likely some people are intimidated when they interview a professor because they assume that you are smarter than they are!! Hey, that’s what we learned in college. They are concerned that you will seem distant or arrogant or any of a hundred other professor stereotypes. As for the letter, the recruiter made a decision based on her experience, & it looks like it was the right choice. The fact that the letter was direct & frank showed your assertiveness & willingness to do what is necessary to succeed. I’m sure they are pleased with your response if they are preparing an offer to give you on Monday! You need to remember, though, that you are interviewing the company as much as the company is interviewing you. In your field, there are only 1.7 candidates for each position. (I don’t know who that .7 person is!) Take notes, remember how the group interacted, & continuously ask yourself if you feel comfortable with them.

You’re right about the three candidates’ schedule. I don’t think you are the oddball candidate, though. Keep on being assertive about your talents & skills because that’s what the company needs. I’m glad that you are still interviewing because having the recruiter as a liaison makes it harder to know what was actually said. I hope you get the offer on Monday & that you love your new job.

Nearly 20 million tons of cargo has crossed the Port Authority docks since the first of this year through June, Executive Director Roger Guenther announced in his report to the Port Commission today during the regular monthly meeting, the Port Authority said in a news release. Guenther identified loaded container units and steel imports as the key performance drivers responsible for the strong solid growth in cargo.
