By Eugene C. Onyibo

It is impossible to fit into the modern times if one does not go to school. Consequently, education is a necessity, not a luxury. People's attitude to education in contemporary time appears to suggest, in fidelity to Platonism, that it is better to be unborn than to be uneducated. The demand for education in different parts of the world is unarguably on daily increase. People make numerous sacrifices to acquire education. Parents are willing to give all they have in order to see their children through school. Some people travel to foreign countries in order to acquire quality educational training. Acquiring formal education has become one of the greatest priorities in life today. However, despite the wide acceptance formal education has gained all over the world, one of the most significant questions about education that is often not asked is, "What is the relevance of education to practical life?' In other words, to what extent is education helpful in addressing practical life challenges? This question needs to be asked because the expected impacts of education are absent is the life of many educated people. One of the factors that speak very eloquently on this is that education has continuously remained unable to improve the standard of living of numerous graduates.

Education Real LIfe CHAllenges and

I

In contemporary times, almost as a cultural practice, education has been elevated to the level of an initiation rite into the modern world. With the aid of formal educational training, people acquire the skills of reading and writing. It is obvious that literacy, the ability to read and write, has become a requisite for coping with numerous challenges of modern times. As a strategy for ensuring that no child is denied the opportunity of acquiring formal education, not sending a child to school is a criminal offence in some parts of the world, especially in the West. In addition, some governments assist their citizens to acquire formal education by either subsidising the cost or making it available at no cost (at the basic level, at least).

It is imperative to remark that education is a means to an end, but not an end in itself. The implication of this is that education is a process that leads to the making of a product. The process is incomplete without the product. It is the product that gives value to the means. The quality of the process can be inferred from the quality of the product. As a means, education is incomplete without the end of the process. This end is the purpose it (education) is designed to serve (under ideal situation). Let us justify our claim that the expected impacts of education are absent is the life of many educated people by examining a very sensitive aspect of life of educated people, their finances. How many educated people are truly financially successful? Most graduates struggle all through life to make ends meet, but to no avail. There are numerous people who graduated from tertiary institutions (even at the top of the class), but who are far below many people with lower educational training (academic intelligence and scholarly ability) than theirs in the ladder of financial success. Perhaps, financial struggles and crises are worse among educated people. Most educated people struggle all through their working years merely to make ends meet, but to no avail, and end as liabilities during their retirement. The inability of education to assist graduates in managing real life challenges is rooted in the fact that most people are ignorant of the purpose of education. Why do we go to school? Why should people go to school? What is the purpose of education? What is the rationale of education? What are the objectives of education? Why should parents send their children to school? Education is one of the most abused or, rather, misunderstood human experiences. Unless the purpose of education is understood and clarified, the continuity of its abuse (by most people) will remain inevitable. Many people go to school for the wrong reasons. In addition, most parents send their children to school for the wrong reasons. Most people have erroneous conceptions about the objectives of education. Continued from page 22 12 MARCH 29, 2019

Continued from page 12 It is imperative to remark that this problem is rooted in the fact that the major incentive for going to school in the earliest days of its inception in different parts of the world was that it was a ticket to prosperity. This was possible then because employment opportunities abound for educated people then. But things have changed, and very significantly. In most parts of the world today, there is high level of unemployment among educated people. Thus, education does not guarantee financial success anymore. In fact, education has become a major cause of poverty, considering the fact that it has no provision for instilling the knowledge of wealth creation principles in students. It is high time the purpose of education is reconsidered. The idea of going to school in order to acquire certificate should be denounced, if the training will improve the life of educated people. The idea of going to school in order to prepare for gainful employment should also be denounced because there are limited employment opportunities for unlimited graduates. If school prepares graduates for employment, but there are limited employment opportunities for unlimited graduates, it means that school prepares students for unemployment. This is why the conception that school merely prepares students for gainful employment is unacceptable.

The ideal purpose of education is to facilitate an integral development of the human person - the intellectual, moral, physical, social, spiritual, psychical and psychological dimensions of man. Going to school should facilitate the optimum development of all the aspects of the human person. An ideal educational system should not isolate any aspect of man in the training process, nor consider some aspects more important than others. Anything short of this is an aberration, and is unacceptable. Every educational process should be able to assist students to develop their latent potential. Any educational process that does not fulfill this objective is useless. When the mind is developed, it is able to identify and solve problems for humanity and, consequently, be compensated with reward. Money is merely the reward for solving problems. Any graduate who cannot solve problems in the society lacks the capacity for wealth creation. This is a fact most graduates are ignorant of. Education will assist graduates to become happy and fulfilled in life if it is structured to facilitate the optimum development of their minds. If this is done, education will equip graduates with the requisite skills to survive the economic battles and challenges of real life. It is very painful to remark that education has remained unable to serve practical purpose because most of the things the school system teach students are things they do not need to survive in the real life. In other words, most students spend years in school learning things that will not be useful to them when school days are over. The crux of this deficiency in the educational system is that the people who are most concerned in the educational sector are ignorant of its existence.

Despite the fact that the consequences of the deficiencies of the educational system in its present form accounts for the ugly experiences of most graduates in the real life, the government has continuously demonstrated increasing incompetence in addressing this challenge. Consequently, it has become obvious that graduates who conscientiously desire a bright, refreshing and happy life must acquire Supplementary Education on their own before their school training will have the desired effect in their life. It also implies that students should also go beyond what they are taught in the class if they are sincerely passionate about happy in the real world (I.e life after school).

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/6922501

One of the key objectives of education is empowerment. If the educational system is restructured to achieve this purpose, graduates will become assets, but not liabilities, no matter the circumstances. Such an educational process will assist students to create jobs if they are unable to get jobs when they become graduates. As earlier remarked, education is a process, and every process is incomplete without a product. The quality of a product is the most reliable standard for ascertaining the quality of the process that produced it. There is urgent need to restructure the educational system to ensure that that the training it instills in students adequately empowers them to effectively confront life challenges, especially when school days are over.

What do nurses, teachers, and lawyers have in common? They all usually need a license to work in their field. Some may also have certifications. But what are licenses and certifications? How do they differ? Will you need them for your career? If you have questions about licenses and certifications, you’re not alone. And it’s no wonder: the way these terms are used can vary, and requirements might differ from one state, or job, to another. For example, a dietitian in Florida needs a state issued license, but one in New Jersey does not. This article explains what these credentials are and uses data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) to show the occupations in which workers are most likely to have a license or certification. It also highlights BLS growth projections for selected occupations.

vocational nurse

Medical coder

Certification • Awarded by a professional organization or other nongovernmental body Is not legally required in order to work in an occupation • Requires demonstrating competency to do a specific job, often through an examination process. Sometimes, these credentialing terms are used interchangeably. For example, states may refer to the credentials teachers need as certifications. However, BLS would define them as licenses because they are issued by a state government and are legally required for many teaching jobs.

What are licenses and certifications? Licenses and certifications show that a person has the specific knowledge or skill needed to do a job. Typically, you earn these credentials after you’ve completed your education. Sometimes, you become licensed or certified after you’ve gained practical experience, such as through an internship, residency, or time on the job.

Which occupations have workers with these credentials? About 26 percent of employed people in the United States had a license or certification in 2015, according to the BLS Current Population Survey. As chart 1 shows, workers with advanced degrees were most likely to be licensed or certified. For example, more than half of employed people with a master’s, professional, or doctoral degree had one or more of these credentials.

Earning a license or certification involves meeting standards, which often includes passing an exam. Licenses and certifications are usually valid for a limited term and must be renewed periodically. An employer may require either credential.

Licenses and certifications are more common in some occupation groups than in others. Whether you need an occupational license or certification might depend on your state, employer, or the type of work you hope to do.

However, there are a few key differences in the way BLS uses these terms. As shown below, one of the biggest distinctions between these two credentials is that licenses are legally required by the government to work in an occupation; certifications are not.

Licenses In 2015, about 22 percent of employed people had a license. Occupations with the highest percentages of licensed workers include those in healthcare, legal and protective service, community and social services, and personal care and service.

License • Awarded by a governmental licensing agency • Gives legal authority to work in an occupation • Requires meeting predetermined criteria, such as having a degree or passing a state administered exam. 48 MARCH 29, 2019

Healthcare. Nearly three quarters of the 8.8 million workers in healthcare practitioner and technical occupations held a license in 2015. These occupations include physicians, pharmacists, and dental hygienists. And almost half of the 3.5 million workers in healthcare support occupations—a group VOL. 24 ISSUE 1185

Firefighter

that includes psychiatric aides and massage therapists—also had licenses. All states require workers to be licensed in some of these occupations; nearly all states require licensing for workers in other occupations. BLS projects relatively fast job growth for many healthcare occupations, including those that usually require a license. For example, occupational therapy assistants, physical therapist assistants, and nurse practitioners are projected to be among the fastest growing occupations. Education, training, and library. More than half of the 8.9 million workers in education, training, and library occupations held a license in 2015. Most notably, to work in public schools, teachers from preschool through high school need a state issued credential. Some librarians and postsecondary teachers may also need a license, depending on their specialty or state. A few postsecondary teacher occupations, including law and health specialties teachers and nursing instructors, are among the fastest growing ones in this group. These workers either are required to have or may benefit from having a license in the occupation that they are preparing students to enter. For example, nursing instructors might have a nursing license. Legal and protective service. In 2015, about 64 percent of the 1.8 million workers in this group, which includes lawyers and judges, held a license. And about 38 percent of the 3.1 million protective service workers (including firefighters and first line supervisors of police and detectives) had one. Within this group, employment of arbitrators, mediators, and conciliators is projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations between 2014 and 2024. But requirements vary for whether workers in these occupations need a license. Community and social services. About one third of the 2.6 million workers in community and social services occupations, VOL. 24 ISSUEwhich 1185 includes counselors and

social workers, held a license in 2015. Growth is projected to be much faster than the average for many community and social services occupations, including substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors, mental health counselors, health care social workers, and mental health and substance abuse social workers. Personal care and service. More than one quarter of the 5.4 million workers in personal care and service occupations held a license in 2015. Examples include funeral directors, childcare workers, and gaming dealers. Between 2014 and 2024, much faster than average employment growth is projected for personal care aides. Some states require workers to complete training or pass a competency exam to enter this occupation. And skincare specialists, barbers, and hairdressers—occupations in which workers commonly have a license—are projected to have faster than average employment growth. Other licensed occupations. Workers in lots of other occupations may need to get a license. Examples include those in transportation (such as pilots and bus drivers), sales (such as real estate brokers and insurance sales agents), architecture and engineering (such as architects and civil engineers), and business and finance (such as personal financial advisors and accountants). Occupations that have licensure requirements and are projected to have much faster than average growth include clinical, counseling, and school psychologists; electricians; and mechanical insulation workers. Certifications About 3 percent of employed people held a certification but no license in 2015, according to BLS. In addition to the occupation groups described below, other groups—including community and social services and healthcare, mentioned previously—have a relatively high percentage of workers who have a certification but not a license. Computer and math. In 2015, nearly 9 percent of the 4.4 million workers in computer and math occupations had a certification but no license. For example, computer programmers and network and systems administrators might be certified in a specific programming language or in vendor specific products that they use.

TRIBAL EMPLOYMENT TRAINING PROGRAM

BLS projects much faster than average employment growth for actuaries and information security analysts, two occupations that are expected to be in demand as the need to manage risks increases. And faster than average employment growth of database administrators is projected to be fueled by greater data needs of companies.

Tribal Employment & Training Program Looking for Native American Indians, Alaskan Natives or Native Hawaiians needing assistance finding employment or vocational training.

Installation, maintenance, and repair. About 6 percent of the 5 million workers in installation, maintenance, and repair occupations had a certification but not a license in 2015. Electrical power line installers and repairers, automotive body and related repairers, and aircraft and avionics equipment mechanics and technicians are a few examples of occupations in this group in which workers might benefit from being certified.

Must be a member of a U.S. Federally recognized tribe with a supporting document from a Federally recognized Tribe’s Tribal Rolls and Records Office

Employment growth is expected to vary considerably among occupations in this group. Some occupations, such as wind turbine technicians and diesel service technicians and mechanics, are projected to grow much faster or faster than the average. Others, such as telecom technicians or electrical and electronics installers and repairers, are projected to decline.

Wo r k f o r c e I n n o v a t i o n a n d Opportunity Act Section 166, 20 CFR 684.300 (a) (1) An Indian, as determined by a policy of the INA program grantee; (2) Alaska Native; or (3) Native Hawaiian .

Other occupations with certifications. Many other occupations allow workers to demonstrate their expertise through certification. They include those in management (such as industrial production and human resources managers), arts and design (such as graphic and floral designers), media and communications (such as writers and broadcast and sound engineering technicians) and production (such as machinists and assemblers and fabricators). Occupations with certification options and much faster than average projected growth include market research analysts, interpreters and translators, and solar photovoltaic installers. Learn more The Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH) is a great resource for finding out what’s typically needed to enter an occupation—including license or certification requirements. OOH profiles also describe what workers in an occupation do, what they earn, what their job outlook is, and more. For requirements in a specific occupation, check with your state licensing board or prospective employers. PREPARING FOR THE REAL WORLD

the bad guy. Let her mom start the process by explaining that she made a few mistakes in terms of teaching her more about personal responsibility and self-reliance when she was younger. Then, she can begin to lay out the first few rules and expectations.

Dear Dave,

In my mind, there’s nothing wrong with requiring her to get a job within 30 days if she doesn’t already have one. If she needs to go job hunting, make sure she’s out of bed and on the road no later than 8:00 a.m. every morning. During this first phase, looking for work every day should be her job. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to start teaching her about budgeting, saving, and everything else that goes into handling money responsibly during this time, too.

I’m getting married this summer and about to become a stepfather, but my fiancé’s daughter from a previous marriage seems very irresponsible. She’s 20 and lives at home, has trouble holding a job, and she doesn’t really want to work. When she doesn’t have money to make her car payment, she seems to expect her mom to pay it for her. My fiancé and I both agree that she’s been too lenient with her in the past, but she doesn’t want to suddenly pull the rug out from under her. How do you think we should approach this situation? Kendall Dear Kendall, Marriage counselors say you have a good chance of having a successful marriage if you’re in agreement on four things—religion, money, children, and in-laws. So, first things first. I’d strongly suggest you and your fiancé go through pre-marital counseling to make sure you’re on the same page when it comes to handling this and other issues. If you and her mom really want to show her you love her, you’ll make sure she starts learning some character and discipline. And it’s very important that both of you are on the same page and in agreement every step of the way. You might also want to read a book together by Dr. Henry Cloud called “Boundaries.” This is a great book, and it will give you both several ideas for creating a reasonable timeline aimed at teaching her more responsibility. I would advise letting her mom present any changes to her initially. Neither of you wants to create a scenario where you’re viewed as 54 MARCH 29, 2019

Next, phase two might consist of requiring her to help around the house doing chores on her days off, or whenever mom needs a hand. Then, after a month or two of this, phase three might consist of her paying a small amount in rent. Do you see what I’m doing? By stepping up the expectations gradually you’re building a foundation so she’ll have the tools and knowledge to where, in the sixth or seventh month, she’s moving out and taking care of her own responsibilities. Like an adult! —Dave
