The Job Interview:
A TWO WAY DISCUSSION
A
job interview is often viewed as one of the most stressful undertakings in our professional lives. However, the most effective way of minimizing that stress is to view it as simply another sales meeting, the product being you. We don’t realize it, but every day we are selling ourselves, whether it is professionally or personally. The success of these sales is reflected in our relationships with others and our progress within our chosen field. As with any sales meeting, preparation is key, and the second most important thing is belief in your product. The example I’m going to use here is a sales representative from a manufacturer of jams who is selling the individually portioned variety to a hotel. This sales rep knows for a fact that the quality of the product is lacking, and that only a small percentage of fruit is used, making it taste artificial and unpalatable. Knowing this, and not believing in the product, how is he going to sell this product successfully? What may happen is that he is able to sell it on price alone but he certainly won’t get any repeat orders. The exact same principles apply when selling your skills. Let us say that a large casino is looking for a front line person who is able to work under pressure and deal with many difficult clients. You know that perhaps your history of dealing with difficult clients is not all that it should be, and that when the going gets rough you tend to crack. You then try to sell yourself as something you are not, maybe landing the job on looks alone. The end result of this whole scenario will probably be that you resign in a couple of months, really stressed out, or you are asked to leave because you can’t fulfill the core competencies. What a meaningless waste of time and an unattractive addition to your resume.
...you actually do have the power of choice. Rather than jump at the first opportunity, 14 wait a little bit. Vol. 21 Issue 1029 March 4 - March 11, 2016
More importantly for you is the question of whether or not you will be happy working for this organization. Something to remember here is that you actually do have the power of choice. Rather than jump at the first job opportunity, wait a little bit. Your first step before the interview should be finding out about the company. A great way to start is either to Google them or look them up in the trade publications. The first question you need answered is, what sort of organizational structure is it? A huge hotel group will almost certainly be run on a corporate framework, whereas a small family run guest house will be informal. Make note of any marketing campaigns they’ve run or are currently running, as well as any bad press they may have had in the past. Most importantly, take note of their successes because you are going to use this in the interview. Now armed with this knowledge, you are ready to go into the interview. The main body of the interview entails an in-depth discussion of your resume. Always make sure that you offer the most up to date version and that you’re familiar with its contents. Many people have professional writers create their resumes and don’t familiarize themselves with the nuances. A very good guideline is to never reveal too much about your personal life in your resume, as this unnecessary and can be detrimental to your credibility. Once through the main part of the interview, you are generally invited to ask questions. An excellent way to start is by way of a mini introduction showing that you know something of the company. Letting it lead to the first question is a good idea. For example, you can ask, “I have been following the successes of the Welcome Group in the press for a while now, and I’m particularly impressed by the number of service excellence awards that the group has received. This tells me that there is excellent cooperation between your staff members. As a large group, how do you manage to achieve such cohesion?” This will answer several areas of concern such as staff turnover, bonuses or incentive schemes, team building and training. Dave Says BY DAVE RAMSEY
Talk to Mom & Dad Dear Dave, My boyfriend is wondering if he should buy life insurance for his mom and dad. They’re both in their seventies, and they’re no longer married to each other. His mom is disabled and remarried, and she doesn’t have any life insurance coverage. The only coverage his dad may have would be through his employer. He’s afraid he would have to pay funeral expenses if one of them died, and he’s not in good enough shape financially to do that right now. What’s your advice? Cherie
Dear Cherie, If the only insurance his dad may have is furnished through his employer, then yeah, when he stops working he probably won’t have life insurance anymore. It would be fine if he wanted to buy them each a small policy, but it’s going to be ver y expensive at their age. He would have to get them to sign off on it, and they’d also have to be healthy enough to have a policy issued.

Vol. 21 Issue 1029 March 4 - March 11, 2016
This isn’t a good long-term plan, however. As a long-term plan, I’d tell your boyfriend that he needs to build up his own wealth. If he had $15,000 to $20,000 in savings, that’s more than enough to bur y two people. I don’t mean to sound insensitive, but we’re talking about the economics involved in this kind of situation. You can have a nice funeral for as little as $5,000. The other thing I’d do if I were him is I’d have a discussion with mom as to whether or not the stepfather has the funds to handle this sort of thing. When it comes right down to it that would be his responsibility, not the son’s. Then, he should have a similar discussion with his dad. If his dad’s got insurance through work, and the stepdad is ready to pay for his mom’s burial, then I wouldn’t buy insurance on them. They’re covered for the immediate future.
So I wouldn’t do it unless they absolutely don’t have this sort of thing covered. Even then I’d prefer you just cover it with cash, because all we’re talking about is just enough to cover burial costs. Nothing needs to be elaborate. I hope this helps, Cherie! — Dave
Pausing the Baby Steps to celebrate? Dear Dave, My wife and I are in Baby Step 2 of your plan, and we’ve got our twentieth wedding anniversar y coming up in a few months. We had always planned on taking a 10-day luxury trip to celebrate, but now that we’re tr ying to get out of debt it seems pretty unrealistic. Should we pause the Baby Steps and celebrate like we originally planned, or would it be better to concentrate on paying off debt? Don
Dear Don, If it were me, I’d want to pause and celebrate in a smaller way. Then, in a year or two when you’ve reached your goal of being debt-free, you could have a big double celebration — for your anniversar y and for gaining control of your finances. Think about it. Why isn’t the twenty-first, twenty-second or twenty-third anniversary just as big as the twentieth? No reason really. It’s just an arbitrar y milestone we as human beings decided on and created. But you can “undecide” stuff like that anytime you want. If you two, as a couple, are in a g r e e m e n t on that point, then it suddenly becomes easier to delay pleasure in order to win. And trust me, when you agree on things like that, the celebrations become even sweeter!
—Dave

CAREER PLANNING Elka Torpey | January 2015
for High Schoolers PART 3
In the last two issues of JobSparx, we have highlighted planning techniques for high school students as well as those entering college. This advice is universal, and can help anyone who is looking to further their career, or to change positions. This week, education and training options are listed for those in secondary school and beyond.
Train for a career
Career preparation should start in high school, but it shouldn’t end with graduation: Most occupations require some type of training or education after high school. On-the-job training, apprenticeships, certificates, non-degree awards, and various levels of college degrees are typically required for entry-level jobs. Which type of training you need depends on the career you want to pursue. Your high school may offer opportunities for getting career training or college credits before you graduate. And after graduation, your training options expand even more. The closer you get to entering the workforce, the more you’ll want to narrow your choices.
In high school
Getting a solid education is an important foundation for any career. Workers in many occupations use problem-solving, communication, research, and other skills that they first learned in high school. By doing well in classes and taking part in career-training or college-preparation programs, you demonstrate that you’re ready to put these skills into action. Plan and achieve. Make sure your high school course plan prepares you for entering the next phase of training or education in your desired career. To enter an electrician apprenticeship, for example, you may need a year of high school algebra. Your school counselor can help you plan your schedule to ensure that you take the required classes. Employers and postsecondary schools often look to your high school record to gauge how you might perform on the job or in an educational program. And finishing high school shows that you can set goals and follow through. “Starting freshman year, do the absolute best you can in your classes,” says Laura Inscoe, dean of counseling and student services at Wakefield High School in Raleigh, North Carolina. “Start strong and stay strong.” But school counselors also say not to worry too much if your grades aren’t as good as you’d like. “School studies open doors if you do well, but they don’t shut doors if you don’t,” says Danaher. “You might just take a different Vol. 21 Issue 1029 path.”

Career programs. Your high school may offer options for exploring careers while earning credit toward graduation. Some of these options also allow you to earn industry certifications, licensure, or college credit. In her high school, for example, Sours attends a career academy for health and medical sciences. She is learning about healthcare careers and will have a chance to apply some of her skills and knowledge as she continues in the program. By graduation, she’ll have earned both certifications and credits toward an applied nursing degree program at the local community college. Career academies and other types of technical education are available in many schools to provide hands-on career training. Classes in fields such as business and finance, culinary arts, and information technology are designed to prepare you for work or postsecondary school. College prep. If you know your goal is college, school counselors usually recommend taking the most rigorous academic classes your school offers—and those that you can successfully handle. Doing so helps bolster both your college application credentials and your readiness for college-level study. Some college-prep programs, such as Advanced Placement and dual enrollment, may help you get a head start on earning a postsecondary degree. Taking classes in these programs may allow you to waive some college course requirements, either by achieving a high score on exams or by completing a course for both high school and college credit. Admission to college is not based on coursework alone, however. Not all high schools offer advanced academics programs, and not all students take them. You may still have more options than you think, depending on your career goals.
After high school
About two-thirds of high school graduates from the class of 2013 enrolled in college that fall, according to BLS: 42 percent in baccalaureate (4-year) colleges and 24 percent in 2-year schools. Of the remaining one-third of 2013 graduates, who opted not to go to college, 74 percent entered the labor force. College-bound high school graduates may not know it, but BLS data show that wages are usually higher, and unemployment rates lower, for people who continue their education after high school. Associates and bachelors degree programs range from accounting to zoology. But job training and vocational school programs may offer the type of career preparation you need
for the occupation that interests you. Job training. If you get a job or enter the military directly out of high school, you’ll receive training specific to the job. Some employers may even pay for you to get related credentials, such as industry certification. The type and length of on-the-job training you get depends on the occupation. For example, community health workers typically need 1 month or less of experience on the job and informal training, in addition to a high school diploma, to become competent in the occupation. Apprenticeships are a form of job training in which a sponsor, such as an employer, pays a trainee to learn and work in a particular occupation. Some jobs in the military include apprenticeship training, but others involve different types of hands-on learning. Vocational school. Also known as trade or technical schools, vocational schools have programs designed to give you hands-on training in a specific field. Many of these programs lead to non-degree credentials, such as a certificate or diploma. Occupations that you can prepare for at these types of schools include automotive mechanic and emergency medical technician (EMT). Some vocational schools specialize in a certain occupation or career field, such as truck driving, culinary arts, or cosmetology. Others provide a diverse range of programs, such as medical assisting and precision production. Earning a certificate allows you to prepare for a career in a relatively short amount of time: Nearly all certificate programs take fewer than 2 years to complete. For example, you may earn a nursing assistant certificate in less than 1 year. Associates degree. Associates degrees, which may qualify you for occupations such as dental hygienist and funeral services manager, are available through public community colleges and other 2-year schools. But some 4-year schools also offer associate degrees that complement or lead into their bachelor’s degree programs. Earning an associates degree and then transferring to a bachelor’s degree program might make sense if you’re unsure of what you want to study. It also allows you to save money on tuition, because community colleges are usually less expensive than baccalaureate colleges and universities. Bachelor’s degree. If you plan to get a bachelor’s degree, your school counselor can help you with the application processes for colleges and financial aid. But you should also have a plan for why you’re pursuing a degree. A good initial step is to think about what
you might like to major in. If you’ve been considering your career interests throughout high school, declaring a major won’t be difficult. “Your initial undergraduate program should be an outgrowth of your academic strengths in high school,” says Carter. Still not sure what you want to study? Look at some studies. For example, job opportunities and starting salaries vary by college major. (See table.) Data may be helpful in narrowing your choices, but they shouldn’t be the sole determinant of your future. “Don’t let your decision be based on money alone,” says Hartline. “Find something you’re going to love to do.” To keep your options open as you choose a major, school counselors suggest entering a liberal arts program. Take classes in a broad range of subjects to help you figure out what you like best—and where that might lead in your future.
Be flexible—and follow your dream
Everyone’s career path is different, and there is no “right” way to start a career. For example, if you want to postpone your studies to discover your passion, you might decide to take a “gap year” after high school. A gap year gives you a chance to pursue meaningful volunteer, work, or travel experiences. But school counselors recommend that you have a plan to ensure that your time off is productive. Whatever career path you choose, says Schneider, remember that you can change your mind at any time. “There’s always the flexibility to shift course,” he says. “A career is not a life sentence. If at some point you realize, ‘I don’t want to do this,’ back up and ask yourself the same questions again: ‘What am I good at? What do I like to do?’” And have the confidence to work toward your ideal career, school counselors say, even if it seems out of reach. “Put a plan together and go for it,” says Danaher, “even if everyone else says you’re crazy, or you’ll never make it. You may not make the NBA, but you might find a way to work within it doing work you really enjoy.”

Put forth your best you
It may seem early, but even in high school you can start to develop habits that are sure to be appreciated by future employers. “As a student, there are things you can do to get yourself college and work ready,” says career counselor Mark Danaher. For example, he says, students can develop good habits by getting to class on time, taking responsibility for their school work, and emailing a teacher if they’re going to be absent or late. Also, students need to remember to dress and behave appropriately whenever they might be in contact with a potential employer. “You act one way with your friends and another on the jobsite,” says school counseling consultant Julie Hartline. “Mind your demeanor.” This awareness extends to online forums, too. “There are a tremendous amount of positives to social media in terms of networking,” says director of college counseling Michael Carter. “But you have to be really careful.” Employers and college admissions officers often check out applicants online and on social media sites. “They’re looking into your background and want to see who you’re going to be because you may represent a business or institution someday,” says Carter. “Make sure that what you put out there for the world to see is how you want to be seen. Social media is a great tool, but you have to use it responsibly.”

The hospitality industry, by its very nature, is an extremely stressful area, centered exclusively on the customer. Basic confidence in your ability to provide service excellence is of paramount importance, and without that confidence, every customer is going to walk all over you. The next question you need to ask regards the possibility of advancement. Stress your willingness to work towards such goals. This will show that you are not going to be passenger, but an active member of the team. Doing this will also map out for you what the avenues are for advancement, and if they fit in with your career plan.
(Continued from page 14)
You need to make quite clear what your level of responsibility will be and whether or not you feel that you will adequately manage these. Ask questions such as what the reporting structure is, who if anyone will be reporting to you, and what targets are in place on a monthly or yearly basis. Being in the hospitality industry also means that most employees are subject to shift work. Find out if this is the case for your department, and whether they are permanent or rotating. It makes a huge difference to your quality of life if you are on a shift that works well with your personal schedule. You will need to get a general idea on HR policies such as sexual harassment, victimization, maternity leave, compassionate leave and annual leave. Always make absolutely sure that these things would accommodate your personal goals such as having children without loss of income. The above covers the most important aspects that you should know about a company before accepting a job. Never feel obliged to take a job. It could turn out to be a rotten egg for you. Is Culinary School Important for Many aspiring chefs wonder if attending culinary school is really worth the time and expense, when they can easily get on-thejob training for free. Attending a good culinary school can cost $30,000 or more, and it can take up to two years just to get a basic degree.
Additionally, a degree from a prestigious school such as the Culinary Institute of America or Johnson & Wales will give you a very strong foundation. You may not need a culinary school education if you expect to work in smaller restaurants, but if you expect to work at fine dining restaurants under famous chefs, a culinary degree is very important. You may be able to obtain work in fine dining without one, but it will be much harder to do, and you will start out in a lower position working for lower pay. The education will boost your income and your position almost immediately. Getting a formal culinary education may not be for everyone, but if you are serious about a career as a fine dining chef, it is invaluable.
What is a Michelin Star restaurant? The term “Michelin Star” is a hallmark of fine dining quality and restaurants around the world tout their Michelin Star status. I have three questions… Can I ask you three questions? I have attached my resume which shows a gap in my employment since Feb. 2015. I went to the hospital in Feb. and was off the market until I started looking again seriously in January 2016. 1) My background is in administrative support work--ever ything from data entry to executive assistant. Should I add temp jobs that are not in that field on my resume just for the sake of closing the employment gap? Or should I keep my resume as-is and wait for a job that is equal to or better than my past positions to show I am progressing? 2) Should I mention the reason behind the working ga p, i.e., the hospital situation, on a cover letter and if so, can you give an example of how to introduce that subject in the opening paragraph, which I suppose is where it should go? 3) When I attend job fairs, should I mention that I have a trespassing misdemeanor when I talk with employers who invite me to interview? I’ve attended 3 so far, and I didn’t know if I should just wait for the interview so they could see me and hear my experience first, or if I should tell them up front and weed out serious takers. You have to go through a lot to prep for an interview: print resumes, fill out applications, etc., not to mention time and money to go to the interview. I have a nice way of mentioning about the misdemeanor that really helps how it comes across, so talking about it will not be a problem; I just don’t know if/when to mention it at a career fair. -Houston, Texas Reader It’s a good resume! I wouldn’t explain the work gap in relation to your hospital stay until you actually meet with them. Employment gaps are not as bad as one might assume. Don’t try to “fix” it unless you just say that you have been working temp jobs for x number of months. Mention that you © Copyright 2016 JobSparx Magazine
are anxious to get back into your field. If they speak with you over the phone, and ask you about the gap, don’t elaborate a lot. They are very careful not to talk with you about personal health issues, and you don’t need to give much information. Be sure to say that the issue has been totally resolved, and you are looking forward to moving forward. Don’t mention it in a cover letter because they will need to discard your resume immediately. Yo u r 3 r d q u e s t i o n i s a b o u t t h e m i s d e m e a n o r. N O . Yo u m a y h a v e to interview ten times to find the best job, and you won’t interview at all if you present yourself as a problem immediately. Employers are not looking for problems: we are looking for solutions! By giving too much information, you certainly are weeding out employers. ANOTHER
INDUSTRY? Here’s How You Make It Work
Sometimes, you can find yourself yearning for a job that you really shouldn’t think of because you don’t have the right kind of experience. What should you do then – be practical and go after something that’s more your field? The answer is – you should find a way to make it work. Even if a job advertisement does sound like you’d be a stretch for it, there are ways to make the hiring managers see that you could be a great fit. You just need to follow the plan outlined in the steps Vol. 21 Issue 1029 that follow.
62 March 4 - March 11, 2016
FIND ANOTHER WAY TO LOOK AT YOUR EXPERIENCE When you find yourself aiming for a job that’s a stretch, it is important to learn to view your experience with a little imagination. Instead of simply associating your experience with the industry you’ve acquired it in you can try to study the specific kinds of experience you’ve had to see how it might transfer to other industries. Successful career hoppers know that many kinds of jobs require the same kinds of skills. They learn along the way how to tell which skills might transfer the best to a new industry. If you are looking for a position as supervisor at a taxicab company, you don’t want to overlook the supervisory experience you’ve had at a restaurant, for instance.
CREATE AN EXPERIENCE SUMMARY When you have accurately identified the skills that can transfer from your previous career to your next one, it’s time to flaunt it. You should create a summary of all the experience you’ve had in the key areas that the job advertisement requires. Placed at the head of your resume, your summary should help focus the hiring manager’s attention on how you can be a great fit.
MAKE YOUR RESUME ENTIRELY ABOUT WHAT YOU HAVE ACHIEVED SO FAR Many job applicants make the mistake of beating about the bush when they write their resume. They don’t realize that resumes need to be as succinct and scientifically to-the-point as an advertisement does. Just as an advertiser tries to make his product seem as appealing for its relevance to the consumer’s needs as possible in the 20 seconds he has, the resume of the savvy job applicant condenses everything he can do so that he can show the buyer (the employer) how he can be satisfy the needs of his company. Resumes typically get no more time from the hiring manager that the typical ad spot on TV does. This principle borrowed from advertising is even more relevant to applicants crossing over into a new industry. To focus the hiring manager’s attention on what you can do rather than where you come from, you need to talk facts and figures more than anything else. Think long and hard about what exactly you have done in your career so far that could make you attractive asset to company you are applying to. Perhaps you helped your company save money by resolving a dispute with a distributor or a client. You could have saved the company money by finding a way to wrap meetings up more quickly. Whatever numbers you can lay out, that’s all you should do on your resume.
FIND A CONTACT Networking has always been important to finding a great job. This is only truer today with LinkedIn and the other networking possibilities that are available. Businesses often don’t even advertise their positions now – they merely tap their employees or search on LinkedIn themselves. The key to moving to a new industry today is to have a great network of professional friends in that industry who can introduce you to their hiring manager. This is the best way to approach a new job in a new industry.
