5 Secrets Hiring Managers Wish Job Seekers Knew by Ramya

You just got the call you’ve been waiting for. A hiring manager is interested in interviewing you in the next few days. Considering today’s saturated job market, you’re probably beaming with excitement. And, like most job seekers, you’re probably also wondering what to do and say during the interview. Wouldn’t it be helpful to know what hiring managers really think about the hiring process? I caught up with a few seasoned managers who shared these super helpful secrets:

1. WE KNOW ALL ABOUT YOU BEFORE YOU WALK THROUGH THE DOOR In today’s social media-driven world, you shouldn’t be surprised that hiring managers admit to doing Internet searches on candidates before they meet them. In fact, some managers even solicit information about you from people in their network. This helps them become more familiar with who they’re considering hiring. What this means for you Be mindful of the online and offline trails you’re leaving, because they’re easy to find. If a manager searches your name and finds drunken party pictures from Cancun, they’re not going to hire you — no matter how qualified you are (unless you’re applying for a job to get drunk in Cancun). And if a manager gets negative feedback about you from someone in their network, they’ll think twice before they offer you the job. What you can do about it Google yourself and see what comes up. Then view your results through the eyes of a potential employer by asking, “Would I hire someone if I read/watched/viewed this about them?” If your answer is no, work on deleting forum posts, articles, personal websites and/or videos that may be viewed as unfavorable or offensive to potential employers.

2. WE WON’T HIRE YOU IF WE DON’T LIKE YOUR LOOK Thinking about wearing a mini-business skirt, a trendy plunging neckline or painting your nails green? Think again. These are just a few examples of what some hiring managers listed as interview wardrobe don’ts. “We need to revisit the definition of ‘dress for success,’ because a lot of candidates get it wrong,” said one New York-based manager.

40

Vol. 20 Issue 1015 November 20 - November 27, 2015

What this means for you Your look could significantly reduce your chances of getting the job. When dressing for an interview, remember to follow the rules of your specific industry. For example, if you’re interviewing in a conservative industry like law or banking, a plunging neckline or miniskirt isn’t appropriate interview attire. Want the managerial rule of thumb? When in doubt, err on the side of caution. (Yes, this means ditching the green nail polish, too.) What you can do about it Before you go on your next interview, do some research on your potential employer’s dress code. You can start by checking the company website, asking business associates in your LinkedIn network or asking current employees for tips. (For instance, “What is appropriate attire for an interview at your company?”) Again, when in doubt, err on the conservative side.

3. WE’RE TIRED OF HEARING YOU’RE A PERFECTIONIST AND A TEAM PLAYER You know all those interview answers you just memorized? Forget about them! Why? Because hiring managers are sick of hearing the same ol’ generic answers to their questions. They understand that being interviewed isn’t the easiest thing to do. However, they discourage against prepping for interviews through memorization. After all, they don’t want to hire a robot. They want a real (albeit qualified) person who can hold a real conversation — flaws and all. What this means for you Hiring managers really want to get to know you. Granted, they don’t necessarily want to know you watch 9 hours of reality TV on Sundays. But they do want to know you have a unique, likeable personality behind that drycleaned suit and close-to-perfect resume. What you can do about it During your next interview, try to relax and be yourself. I know this is very difficult to do when your dream job’s at stake, but a good place to start is to ditch those interview answers you memorized and attempt to respond to the interviewer’s questions in your own words. Instead of saying “I’m a perfectionist,” for example, tell them about a time when you used your unique skills to perfect a difficult paper, project or proposal. This will certainly help you stand out in a crowded sea of sameness. Continued on page 52

The Power of Gratitude How Giving Thanks Can Help Your Job Search

T

his is the season for giving thanks in many aspects of our lives as we gather with family and friends to overindulge in turkey and all the fixings. If you’re actively seeking a new position or hope to do so in the New Year, it’s also an opportunity to reflect more broadly on your season of thanks. Adding a healthy dose of gratitude to your job search can increase your opportunities for success.

EXPRESSING YOUR THANKS WILL DIFFERENTIATE YOU You’d be surprised by how many people forget the important follow-up factor when interviewing. If you express your appreciation throughout your job search, you’ll continually differentiate yourself from other candidates. But how is a job seeker to do this professionally?

GET IT IN WRITING

Send a handwritten thank you note within 24 hours of an interview or meeting. For timeliness, it’s OK to send a quick email, but that should never replace a handwritten note. Be sure it’s legible and personalized. Mention something you learned or discussed in your meeting. Use your note to show appreciation for the person’s time and insights and to demonstrate your interest and enthusiasm. Managers often have full email inboxes, but they receive few handwritten notes, so you will be remembered.

MIND THEIR TIME Demonstrate appreciation for their consideration. Managers are busy people with competing demands for their time. If they take an hour to interview you or to meet with you for a networking discussion, be

by Lynne Sarikas

sure to demonstrate appreciation for their attention. Show respect for their time by arriving promptly and keeping the discussion to the appropriate time. Be well-prepared and demonstrate your knowledge of the company by having insightful questions ready.

BUT DON’T STOP THERE… Follow-up matters and builds your personal professional brand. The thank you note is step one, but make sure to also demonstrate your professionalism by delivering any requested follow-up items in a timely manner. Become known as someone who does what they say they will do.If you see an article relevant to your recent discussion, forward it with a note. Staying engaged in the process demonstrates interest. The holidays are the perfect time of year to reconnect with family friends and former colleagues, which brings up the topic of networking, as well. Here are a few tips for a game plan that will leave you feeling thankful you took action:

CARDS COUNT People are often more willing to connect at this time of year, and there’s no better way to get back in touch than with an oldfashioned card. If you have any doubt about which holiday someone celebrates, play it safe and send a Thanksgiving card to thank them for their support in the past year. A second option is to send a New Year’s card as you reflect on the past year and the New Year ahead and to thank those who made a difference for you in the past year. Letting someone know that they helped you often makes them even more willing to assist you going forward. And an unexpected note of appreciation can certainly brighten someone’s day.

DON’T OVERLOOK ANY OPPORTUNITY Leverage your connections with family, friends, alums, former colleagues and any others you meet over the holiday season. Use the opportunity to learn what they’ve been doing in the past year and to let them know your plans. People can’t help you with your job search process if they don’t know what you’re seeking. And you never know — they may have valuable contacts they can introduce you to for informational interviews. If a connection pays off, be sure to let the person who introduced you know you had a productive and informative meeting and that you appreciate their support. It might help them think of another contact to share with you.

DO UNTO OTHERS Consider how you can help friends, family and current and former colleagues, as well. It’s not always all about you. You may have connections that would help your contacts. You may have relevant articles to share. To be truly effective, networking is a mutually beneficial relationship. While you’re focused on helping someone else, you may receive significant unexpected benefits. Show your true appreciation by helping others.

DON’T FORGET THE FORMAL FOLLOW-UP Always say thank you and send a handwritten thank you note after a networking meeting or to say thank you for a referral to other valuable resources. Contacts who feel appreciated and respected are much more likely to refer you to additional connections. Finally, it’s also worth noting that managers want to work with positive people. It’s that “attitude of gratitude” that may help open doors. (Click here to tweet this thought.) So think about these other tips for making your search a success and celebrating the spirit of the season:

great team members. Maintaining an attitude of gratitude ensures that you’re showing appreciation to those who support you in your work or your job search. Make the members of your team and those you interact with feel valued and appreciated. Who knows? Someday you might need a favor to support meeting a critical deadline, and people are more likely to help out when they know their efforts are appreciated.

REMEMBER, IT TAKES A VILLAGE Why not start a domino effect of positivity to create a better working environment for your whole team? If you make those around you feel valued and appreciated, you’ll likely have much greater satisfaction in your job, too.

ENVISION SUCCESS TO ACHIEVE IT Finally, have a vision of who you want to be professionally, including the reputation you wish to earn. Develop and demonstrate those critical traits today as you work towards your goals. Whether that goal is success in your current role or landing your dream job, you need a network to support your efforts. Demonstrating gratitude throughout the process will ensure you have support on your journey toward success. How can you demonstrate an attitude of gratitude today?

Demonstrating gratitude... will ensure you have support on your journey toward success.

BE AN EXAMPLE Life is too short to surround yourself with doom and gloom. Positive people make

5 Secrets... Continued from page 40

4. WE DON’T ALWAYS HIRE THE MOST QUALIFIED CANDIDATE

In an ideal world, the most qualified candidates would automatically win hiring managers over. However, this is not always the case. Sometimes the most qualified candidates aren’t what managers are looking for. For instance, someone may have the perfect resume, great credentials, a wealth of experience and all the right answers. Yet if they lack enthusiasm, respect or integrity, they may not get hired. As one hiring manager shared, “If someone lacks the necessary experience, but shows great enthusiasm for the job, I may consider hiring them over someone who’s more qualified.” What this means for you Don’t assume you’ll get hired simply because you meet all the posted job requirements. Hiring managers consider all factors when making a final decision. What you can do about it Identify your weak spots and work on improving them. For instance, if you have a killer resume, amazing experience and great credentials, but you tend to avoid eye contact during interviews, practice making eye contact several days before your next interview. You can start by doing mock interviews with a career development professional or someone you trust. After they “interview” you, ask them to describe the way you come across, then work to get better. Do you slouch? Break eye contact? Ramble? Roll your eyes? Lack enthusiasm? The more you practice, the more prepared you’ll be during the actual interview.

5. WE REALLY WANT YOU TO LIKE US, TOO

Hiring managers appreciate candidates who demonstrate why they love their company. No, I’m not talking about excessive cheesiness. I’m referring to genuinely demonstrating why you’d rather work for them than anyone else.

™ ™

Hiring managers never want to feel like they’re just another company you sent your resume to. Instead, they want to see that you’re genuinely interested in contributing to the growth of the company. If they sense you’re just looking for a paycheck, you won’t get one.

What you can do about it At the risk of sounding painfully obvious, become very familiar with companies before you interview with them. And during your interview, use what you’ve learned to demonstrate why you want to work for a particular company and what you can do to make it better. Otherwise, you run the risk of looking like just another job seeker (and we certainly don’t want that!). About Ramya Ramya is a global career consultant (who’s also referred to as “the Career Nerd”). What this means for you During the interview process, hiring managers want to know you did your “homework.” In other words, they want to see that you took the initiative to research their company, understand its unique challenges and demonstrate how you can help them get better.

1. WAIT ON THE STUFF

Before we talk about budgets, let’s talk about stuff. We love stuff! What we don’t love, however, is the debt that comes along with buying new stuff you can’t afford. Those Italian leather gloves? They’re a fantastic splurge if you have some disposable cash. But if you’re barreling through debt, it’s much more important to stay focused on your debt snowball than on buying hand candy. Sounds obvious when you put it like that, doesn’t it? Delaying pleasure is a sign of maturity. Your diligence and sacrifice now will set you up for plenty of debt-free fun later on.

2. MAKE YOUR PLAN

Instead of giving in to every seasonal whim, make a realistic plan for the months ahead. Do this before Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas arrive — and all the little “must-haves” and “must-dos” along with them. This doesn’t have to be a complicated contract. It’s just a simple agreement of “We are going to spend X amount of dollars for gifts, X amount for potluck-gathering food, and X amount for traveling.” Make sure this amount aligns with your budget for each month. After you and your family decide on a plan for your holiday spending, go ahead and pinky-swear, spit-shake or whatever you must do to establish that you’re committed to seeing it through.

3. STICK WITH IT

Don’t stress if the amount you’ve set aside for these celebrations isn’t as high as you want it to be. Visiting family and giving gifts are fun, but these should be blessings not burdens. So stay strong! As the holidays near, you’ll see others overextending themselves on everything from pumpkin spice drinks to cozy wool coats. And you’ll be tempted to do the same. But ask yourself this: Is it worth it to buy hundreds of dollars’ worth of stuff now, pay for it later, and still be no closer to your goals this time next year? The choice is yours. Make it a good one! Vol. 20 Issue 1015

Volunteer?

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO By: Gord And Gertie Guide

Volunteering is as natural to me as living. You see, I was brought up with the idea that helping others grows me as a person of value and compassion. My parents, however, were very careful to make sure I was developing a strong inner core for myself and not simply using volunteer work to compensate for my own lack of selflove. As they taught me about giving, they would also question why I was volunteering for this or that. Thanks to my parents, I've been a volunteer is some form or other most of my life. I have been blessed with receiving their wonderful philosophy of service. Many of you may not have had this type of mentorship, so let me give you my perspective on volunteering.

REASONS PEOPLE VOLUNTEER Volunteering is important for as many reasons are there are people and needs. 1. Some people volunteer because they just love helping others. Their own joy of giving and making a difference makes them feel valued and valuable to the ones they are serving. They receive back a thousandfold by seeing the impacts created for the people they are helping. 2. Others volunteer because they feel a need to give back to a community that has been good to them and they want to express their gratitude by paying it forward into their community. This is powerful leverage that can build lasting beneficial changes in a viral way. 3. Still others volunteer because it gives them a sense of purpose and meaning to their lives. It's like their contribution to others is fulfilling a critical aspect for their own self-expression in the world. 4. And, of course, many people volunVol. 20 Issue 1015 teer to gain valuable new experience November 20 - November 27, 2015 in a certain field and pay their dues

58

for developing expertise and career advancement opportunities.

5. Last but not least, great volunteers enjoy themselves while giving to others. Long term studies have shown that volunteers live longer, are in better health, have lower rates of depression and less heart disease. The poet John Donne said it best, "No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main..."

SHARE YOUR GIFTS WITH OTHERS Everyone has unique gifts to offer, bar none. When you share your gifts from your heart, you cannot help but feel great! If you don't feel these selfrewards, then you are either volunteering in an area that doesn't fit who you are, or else you've got some deep inner work to complete first. Many of us don't think that we can really make a difference. That's why, if you have a desire to help out, do some research and find an opportunity to try it out. Your very own community will have plenty of opportunities to do so. If you are new at this, it's also a good idea to choose the volunteer leader to whom you feel you can relate to and learn from. The opportunities to make a real difference and impact the lives of others present themselves everyday. The question is, will we take advantage of them or let them pass by like an afternoon breeze? Got a burning question about why it's important to volunteer? "Grandpa Gord" and "Grandma Gertie" put a sensible spin on expert advice, with a little humor thrown into the mix. We cover topics ranging from pets to parenting, careers to hobbies, relationships to lifestyle, finances to food, and everything in between. Visit us at http://www.sensibleguides.com for some simple and straight from the hip advice from people who've been around the block a few times.
