Dave Says BY DAVE RAMSEY

How Do You Have A Wedding Without Debt? Dear Dave, How do you have a wedding without debt? Lynn

Dear Lynn, Wow, where do I start on this one? I guess the best way is to tell the truth. Honey, that question kind of makes you sound like a little princess. How do you have a wedding without debt? It’s really simple. You have a wedding with the money you have. There’s nothing wrong with small, inexpensive weddings. And once you accept that and start thinking about things from a mature, adult point of view, you’ll start realizing you can scrimp and save and have a really nice, small wedding.

Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money and business. He has authored five New York Times best-selling books, including The Total Money Makeover. The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 8.5 million listeners each week on more than 550 radio stations. Follow Dave on Twitter at @DaveRamsey and on the web at daveramsey.com.

20 Issue 1016 26 Vol. November 27 - December 4, 2015

Lots of people have beautiful, memorable ceremonies and even small receptions for less than $1,000. Sure, you can run out, go into debt and wear an $8,000 wedding dress for a few hours on one day of your life. Or, you can find one that’s much cheaper — even something that’s been worn one time — for a couple hundred dollars. Think that’s tacky? Well, let me tell you what’s even more tacky and dumb — going $15,000 to $20,000 in debt for one day! To h a v e a w e d d i n g w i t h o u t d e b t y o u have to be creative and think within your budget. That means growing up and not throwing a temper tantrum just because you can’t have every little thing you want. Most people don’t have lavish, expensive weddings, and guess what? Years down the road they’re still married, madly in love and laughing and hugging when they

remember the best day of their lives. Please, don’t turn what’s supposed to be a happy occasion into a financial mess that will take years to clean up! —Dave

What To Do With Restricted Stock? Dear Dave, My husband works for a large company and receives restricted stock bonuses of approximately $5,000 each year. We’re not sure exactly how long they’re restricted, and we both wonder if we’re allowed to sell these options? Patty

Dear Patty, You said your husband works for a large company, so my guess is they do this as an employee retention move. That’s why they restrict the stock. They’re trying to get people to stay with the company, and you’ll only be able to sell them after they are no longer restricted. Usually, these kinds of things have a oneor two-year restriction. I doubt they’d put a five-year hold on it, but check with the company to find out the specifics. They can tell him when the stock is free to be sold. If it were me, I wouldn’t hold on to too much of it. I don’t own single stocks. They have too much risk for my taste. Keep a little bit, if you want, but don’t put all or even most of your financial eggs into that one basket! —Dave

Chevron Phillips Chemical Honored at Texas Workforce Conference AUSTIN – Chevron Phillips Chemical Company (Chevron Phillips Chemical) was named the Employer of the Year at the Texas Workforce Commission’s (TWC) 19th Annual Texas Workforce Conference held Nov. 18-20 in Dallas. Chevron Phillips Chemical was nominated by the Workforce Solutions Gulf Coast and chosen as the Employer of the Year from among five exemplary finalists, and out of 26 private-sector employers. All nominees were recognized for contributions to their community’s workforce through innovation and collaboration their local Workforce Solutions network partner. Headquartered in The Woodlands, Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LP (Chevron Phillips Chemical) has eight manufacturing facilities and one research and technology center in Texas. Chevron Phillips Chemical is building its $6 billion U.S. Gulf Coast Petrochemicals Project, which will support 10,000 temporary construction and engineering jobs and 400 long-term jobs in Baytown and Old Ocean. “Through its innovative partnership with local schools and Workforce Solutions, the Chevron Phillips Chemical Company’s powerful, local approach to workforce development supports a highly skilled workforce while creating jobs for their region,” said TWC Chairman Andres Alcantar. “I commend Chevron Phillips Chemical for its leadership and contributions to the Texas economy. I extend my sincere congratulations.” In response to workforce demands spurred by expansion, Chevron Phillips Chemical has made tremendous contributions to workforce development through scholarships, mentorships and internships offered to students of Lee College. The company donated $75,000 to Lee College in Baytown to begin a workforce development scholarship program for students pursuing a two-year degree in Process Technology, Instrumentation Technology or Electrical Technology. The program recently extended to additional community colleges and dual-credit enrolled high school students in East Harris, Chambers, Liberty, Brazoria and Jefferson counties. “I congratulate Chevron Phillips Chemical for their approach to workforce development and the creation of quality local jobs to meet industry needs,” said Commissioner Representing Labor Ronny Congleton. Vol. 20 Issue 1016 Together with its 50 percent owner, Phillips 27 November 27 - December 4, 2015

66, Chevron Phillips Chemical with Sweeny ISD developed a petrochemical academy in Brazoria County in 2014. With an initial combined contribution of $1.6 million, the educational academy allows high school students to take dual-credit technical college-level courses while attending high school. Chevron Phillips Chemical also donated $50,000 in 2014 and in 2015 to sponsor a Junior Achievement Inspire event, a series of all-day career education assemblies. The event is attended by nearly 19,000 eighthgrade students in the Greater Houston area. “Congratulations to Chevron Phillips Chemical for its tremendous contribution to the local workforce,” said Commissioner Representing Employers Ruth R. Hughs. “The collaboration of Chevron Phillips Chemical and local partners exemplifies how employers can make a positive and long lasting impact in their communities.” “It is an honor for Chevron Phillips Chemical to be recognized as the 2015 Texas Workforce Solutions Employer of the Year. Workforce Solutions is a valuable partner who helps us get the message out that there are excellent career opportunities in the chemical industry,” said Chevron Phillips Chemical Vice President of Human Resources Greg Wagner. Additionally, four other exemplary employer finalists for Texas Workforce Solutions Employer of the Year included: • Campbell Soup Supply Company (Campbell) was nominated by Workforce Solutions Northeast Texas (Northeast Texas). Campbell collaborates directly with Northeast Texas through recruitment, job postings, job fair participation, annual industry tours and Skills Development Fund grants. Campbell is more than just a major employer of the Paris community; it encourages volunteerism, growth, and support of the local community through hundreds of volunteer hours and thousands of dollars in donations to local charities. • Embassy Suites by Hilton San Marcos Hotel, Spa & Conference Center (Embassy Suites) was nominated by Workforce Rural Capital Area (Rural Capital Area). From partnerships with local school districts that have spawned the development of curriculum and internship opportunities for students, to a strategic partnership with Rural

Capital Area that has doubled and tripled job fair participation by employers and job seekers, respectively, Embassy Suites is providing career solutions today while developing tomorrow’s workforce. • Lockheed Martin Lufkin Operations (Lockheed Martin) was nominated by Workforce Solutions Deep East Texas (Deep East Texas). Lockheed Martin provides specialized training and career advancement opportunities to its 250 employees, including tuition reimbursement and mentoring. Working with local community colleges and universities, volunteers actively participate in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) outreach by supporting high school and college career fairs and offering STEM presentations to science and engineering departments. • Providence Healthcare Network (Providence) was nominated by Workforce Solutions for the Heart of Texas (Heart of Texas). Providence Healthcare Network (Providence) delivers health care to Central Texans through a compassionate and innovative medical system of 2,397 employees. Providence’s passion and innovative leadership in the Waco community goes beyond job growth and skills training in the health care arena. Additionally, Providence partners with and participates in numerous nonprofit activities in the Waco-area. Each of the 28 local workforce development boards recognized a Local Employer of Excellence at the conference. The award honors an employer that is actively involved with Texas Workforce Solutions and has made a positive impact on employers, workers and the community. Awards also were granted to local workforce development boards that provided outstanding services to Texas employers, workers, job-seekers and local communities. Additionally, monetary awards were given to the boards that were recognized for outstanding performance. Monetary awards will be used to enhance board service programs during the next year. The primary goal of TWC and the workforce boards is to respond to the needs of Texas employers through locally-designed, market-driven workforce development initiatives and services. All employers, workers and job seekers are eligible to take advantage of these services.

Hate your JOB?

Time to Fast Forward your JOB Search! Ken called saying he hated his boss. He needed a new job and fast. Upon further discussion, he’d been spiraling downhill in a dysfunctional situation for two years. He’d finally had enough when he saw a co-worker quickly get promoted landing a great position with a new company. The Society of Human Resources Management states that 19% of people intensely dislike their jobs. So if you are one of these, it’s time to become proactive. The economy has improved & employers actively searching for talented people like you. Employers across the nation hired about FOUR million people last month according to Bureau of Labor Statistics. About 10%, or 400,000 of the new hires earn $100k+ salary. Obviously the jobs are out there if you know where to look.

Let’s get your job search moving. Tap into the hidden Job Market. The “hidden job market” contains 80% of all job openings available but these great jobs go unadvertised. To find these jobs you must track down potential openings and actively follow up on leads. You won’t find much competition for these “unadvertised jobs” so the extra effort to track them down is well worth it. Create an appealing LINKEDIN Profile. Recruiters and HR folks are searching this website to find people like you. Be sure your Profile has a smiling, professional-looking photo. Next, create a headline that lists the job title you want to land, such as Project Manager, Financial Analyst, General Counsel, Nonprofit Executive Director. Now skip posting long boring job descriptions. The trick to get attention is to add some of your top accomplishments and the best results you have achieved in the job. You only need a couple per position. Conduct some job market research. Analyze what job title you seek, and where the best opportunities lie for you. Make a list of at least 20 organizations to investigate for possible openings. To develop your list, use the Internet, business journals, annual reports, trade magazines, association listings, yellow pages, and business directories -- many our found at your local library. Note the company name, address, phone number, website and email of a contact person. Your goal is to reach the hiring manager - your potential boss - not the Human Resources department. Go to the company’s website. Take your newly created list and then go to each company’s website. Look at what they offer: their products, services, or in the case of nonprofit - their mission. Still interested in them? Look for organizational charts, often you can find employee and/or executive names. Investigate, make a phone call of two if necessary but try to uncover the particularly company department head’s name who would likely be your boss, or your boss’s boss. Network. Many jobs are found by obtaining a lead through contacts. Ask family, friends, neighbors, old bosses, colleagues, and college alumni for assistance in tracking down job openings, manager names & potential opportunities in your list of companies. Your objective is to connect with someone inside the company who can provide inside information, and internally pass on your resume or application. If you can’t find someone inside, open the door yourself. Write a terrific self-marketing letter to the manager that would most likely be your boss. Include a short paragraph that concisely outlines your strongest skills & major accomplishments. Mention that you’ll be calling in a few days to learn more about their current needs. Attach your resume. Mail the letter (as in postal mail), not email. Follow up & call, but be prepared to sell yourself on the spot if you reach the potential boss.

the influence, however, will remain on the driver’s record. It is also important to remember that all automobile insurance companies have the right to check your driving record when you apply for insurance, and when the policy is up for renewal. Therefore, not only could a poor driving record cost you a job but it could cost you a great deal of money as well.

M

any people are aware, of course, of how important driving records are in their personal life, but not everyone is aware that those records can often play a critical role in whether or not they land the job they need. The truth is that many employers routinely check the DMV and MVR records of their job candidates, even if the jobs being filled do not require the use of a company vehicle.

charge or for a small fee. It is a good idea to start your search for DMV and MVR records with these government agencies. In addition, there are a number of private agencies that specialize in searching these kinds of records. Some of these companies specialize in doing background checks, while others exist to help private individuals find records and information on other individuals. No matter what their specialty, these private companies can be a good source of information on finding a copy of your own driving record.

These DMV records, driving records, MVR records, motor vehicle records and other records provide employers with a wealth of information not only about the individual’s driving record, but about past brushes with the law in the form of DUI When reviewing your driving arrests and other legal problems. records, keep in mind that the states use a point system in order to keep track of a particular Getting a copy of your own d r i v e r ’ s t r a f f i c v i o l a t i o n s , driving record is important, speeding tickets, DUI arrests t h e r e f o r e , w h e n y o u a r e and in some cases even unpaid searching for a new job. It is important to keep in mind that more and more employers are checking the driving records of those they plan to hire, even if those employees are not being hired for driving positions. Many employers use this step as part of an overall background check, in order to help assess the character and honesty of job applicants. For instance, if the check reveals a DUI arrest that the applicant failed to disclose on his or her job application, the employer may determine that the applicant has lied and refuse to hire that individual. Employers also use this check of driving records to protect themselves against the possibility of lawsuits brought about by the actions of their employees. For instance, if an employee volunteers to transport important paperwork for the boss and is involved in an accident, the company could potentially be liable, especially if it can be proven that no pre-employment background check was completed. For these reasons and more, employers often routinely check DMV records, MVR records, driving records, credit reports and more, so it is important for every would be employee to protect themselves and keep their driving record clean.

ould you like to tour the world? Meet people on the go and keep them safe? Fix some of the world’s largest and most complex machinery? If any of these scenarios sound exciting, a career in air travel might be for you.

and make decisions aboard the plane. An airline pilot might oversee a twin-engine DC-3 on a 100-mile hop, a 4-engine Boeing 747 jet crossing the ocean, or a variety of aircraft in between. Duties. Airline pilots plan each flight with the airline’s flight dispatcher and meteorologist. Pilots brief the crew, check takeoff procedures, ascertain that the plane is operating normally, fly the plane over the designated route, land the plane, and file a trip report at the final destination.

This increase in passengers should lead to lots of jobs for the people who ensure that air travelers arrive safely at their destinations. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects an increase in wage and salary jobs. And most of these air-travel jobs come with an adventurous But there’s much more involved in perk: the chance to fly for free flying. per minute to reach their cruising altitude. The pilot switches on the weather radar and other systems to detect aircraft that might accidentally fly into the flight path. During flight, pilots normally follow designated airways and highways in the skyandmarked on flight maps. Most planes have a Global Positioning System onboard that helps the pilot to navigate. When cruising on a flight path, airline aircraft are usually on autopilot, under the control of an onboard computer. The pilot manages the systems by reporting the plane’s location to air traffic control, keeping an eye on all the engine instruments to ensure that they are within limits, and, if necessary, taking over control of the aircraft from autopilot. On long-distance flights, most aircraft issue routine reminders to help the captain and copilot stay vigilant. But the routine of autopilot is never completely routine. Pilots watch for turbulence on the weather radar screen inside the cockpit and attempt to avoid it. They monitor conditions during the flight and prepare for emergency diversion, if needed. And they plan safe alternative routesand zones that avoid mountainous terrain, for example: in case an unplanned descent becomes necessary. When the plane nears its destination, the pilot checks the weather and other conditions. Unfavorable conditions might require a diversion. Landing is the most critical phase of a flight, and it can be tricky. During the manual landing for large aircraft, the flight crew start to slow down with several quick actions: pulling back on the

throttles; raising another set of controls, known as the spoilers, to disrupt airflow over the wings; and reversing the thrust of the engines while applying the brakes. During autopilot landings, all landing actions are automatic except for selecting reverse thrust and taxiing to the parking bay. Passengers appreciate a smooth landing. Pilots try to oblige by gradually slowing the plane using their skill and experience in operating the controls. But even on autopilot landings, pilots make choices. If the runway is wet, for example, pilots may opt to hit the brakes as soon as possible, choosing a jerky stop over the risk of overshooting the runway. Most airline pilots start their careers as copilots with regional carriers. When they join major airlines, their first positions may be as flight engineers. Flight engineers inspect the aircraft and oversee fueling operations before flight. During the flight, these engineers monitor engine performance, cabin pressurization, air condition ing, and other systems. The position of flight engineer exists only on some large jet planes. Smaller airliners, as well as the newer large aircraft, have only a 2-person flight crew that consists of the pilot and copilot. Most pilots and flight engineers say they love their jobs. They like the thrill of flight and the science of mastering complex instruments. The opportunity to do respected work is another element that draws people to this career: Pilots have ultimate responsibility for the safety of passengers and crew.

Qualifications and training All pilots must have a high school diploma or equivalent. However, most airline pilots have a bachelor’s degree. In fact, some colleges and universities offer FAA-approved flight training. These programs combine flight training with regular college coursework. Pilots learn their flying skills in one of three ways: by attending a flight school approved by the FAA, taking private lessons from

ASK DIANA Q: I have to tell you that some questions tha t are asked in an inter view are seriousl y lame. What difference does it make about where I want to be in the future? Wha t a bout describe yourself? Tha t’s crazy. Am I going t o s a y, “ I w a s b o r n i n a h o s p i t a l i n N e w Jerse y?” How can I get them to actuall y ask important questions? Or can I get them to answer important questions? I am tired of losing out because of their stupid questions. -Houston, Texas Reader A: Grouchy much? You are going to ha ve to drop the attitude and do what is required to get a new job. If you are skillful in an i n t e r v i e w, y o u c a n a c t u a l l y g e t t h e m t o ask the questions you want b y asking good questions yourself. For example: she/he asks you to describe yourself, and you sa y, “Other people tell me tha t I am one of the hardest w o r k i n g p e o p l e t h e y k n o w. I l o v e w o r k i n g and enjoy getting results. Let me ask you, though, is this position a new one or will I b e r e p l a c i n g s o m e o n e ? ” Yo u a n s w e r e d , you asked, & you helped direct the wa y the inter view will go. If you continue believing that you are the smartest person in the room, you will have a harder time finding a job. Most people do not like working with conceited co-workers.

He makes irra tional decisions tha t are not based on experience or research. My two para professionals left: one because she was pregnant, and decided not to work when her son was born. The other left because her husband was being transferred. We are now tr ying to hire, and because I teach special needs classes, there are some qualifica tions tha t you reall y can’t see on pa per and would onl y be a ble t o r e c o g n i z e i n a n i n t e r v i e w. H o w e v e r, t h e Principal has decided tha t he will conduct the interviews by himself, and I won’t be involved in the process. I am livid. I will be the one depending on and working with them, but I won’t ha ve an y input on whether or not the y will be a good fit, and I can work well with them. Is there an ything tha t I can sa y to make him include me? I don’t want to make him mad a t me. -Dallas, Texas Reader

A: He probably realizes that he would have a hard time getting a substitute to take your classes while you inter view, and he may be thinking that it will be more expensive to hire a sub. stay or do a good job. That method assures that he has to go through the same process over and over. Go to him and calmly tell him that, even though he doesn’t know, because he hasn’t visited your classroom this year, it takes a specific type of patient, empathetic, experienced, quick thinking person to fill this slot. You will be able to save interviewing time as you will recognize a good candidate quickly. Explain about the return on investment that hiring the right person the first time will give him. You might ask that it be a two interview process with him vetting the person in the first interview, and then you following up with a more task-oriented interview. Perhaps you could have them spend a morning in your classroom and talk with them afterwards. You would be able to see if they are patient with the kids and if they understand that there are different special needs there. He might be more open to this approach. You must realize, though, that his current attitude shows a boatload of arrogance, and he may not be willing to listen. Good luck.

The Foundation has been instrumental in granting more than $3 million in scholarships to schools around the country, including Midwest Technical Institute, Tulsa Welding School, The Refrigeration School and Universal Technical Institute. One of the most important objectives of the mrW Foundation is to continually provide opportunities for financial aid to help those qualified individuals who are interested in learning a skill and mastering a trade. Toward that goal, we are continually creating a variety of scholarship programs with like-minded institutions and organizations. Each program has it’s own nuances but all are similar in that they intend to further Mike’s “PR Campaign for Hard Work.”
