What they do Art therapists work in different settings with different types of clients. Some, like Raja, are in schools, where they work with students of all ages and meet with them in groups or one-onone. Many others work in medical settings, such as community clinics and psychiatric hospitals, where they may help people who have a physical or mental illness. Still others have their own practice, serving clients with various needs.
OTHER TASKS. Art therapists also do assessments, write treatment plans and summary reports, and discuss a client’s progress with colleagues. Most accredited art therapy programs at colleges and universities require applicants to submit a portfolio of artwork and a transcript of course credits in studio art and psychology. Graduate programs usually include a practicum, which involves observation and practice for course credit. You’ll also need to complete an internship, in which you gain supervised experience working with clients or patients. Licensing varies by state. In some states, these workers become licensed as art therapists. Other states allow people to work as art therapists if they are licensed in another field, such as professional counseling. Professional credentials, including registration and certification, are available from the Art Therapy Credentials Board.

The American Art Therapy Association has about 5,000 members in the United States, and its 2013 survey found that most of these art therapists have an annual salary of between $30,000 and $80,000. Although the association estimates that the number of these workers is increasing, positions might not have the job title of art therapist. “If you’re looking just for art therapy jobs, you might not find too many,” says Raja. “But if you’re looking for community jobs where you can apply what you’ve learned, which for me meant considering licensed professional counselor positions, there are a lot more options.” And, says Raja, no matter what it’s called, this work is rewarding. “I love the relationship I get to build with the students and seeing their excitement,” she says. “That excitement they have makes me want to go to work every day.” Elka Torpey is an economist in the Office of Occupational Statistics and Employment Projections, BLS. She can be reached at torpey. elka@bls.gov.

ASK DIANA Q: I am looking for a sales job, but I have no real experience. My dad and mom are both in sales, and they love it. They talk about their strategies and compare notes all the time. Both of them are very dedicated and ethical, and they make really good money. My personality is just like my dad’s. I know that it’s a hard job, and you have to be organized and enthusiastic, but I’m finding it a hard job to get with no experience. Do you have any advice? -Houston, Texas Reader A: Everyone has to start somewhere. You need to reply to every sales ad that you see and explain that you plan to make a career in sales. You have three huge advantages over most candidates: 1) You know how hard it is and that not everyone is successful. 2) You know that you can make money and aren’t afraid to work hard. 3) You know that just starting in sales requires more dedication and work than almost any other job. Many people who decide to go into sales have some misconceptions that cause them to fail. If they believe that they will be immediately successful and get rich in the first few months, they have some hard knocks ahead. If they think that outside sales gives them an opportunity to
drop off dry cleaning, grab a doughnut, do a little shopping, and enjoy their freedom, that’s a huge fail. I know one salesperson who was actually fired because her boss observed her shopping and trying on clothes when she was supposedly on a sales call. Be sure that the companies that you consider have a base salary (even if it’s small,) are ethical, and want to develop new superstars. Remember that you have to learn everything you can and stick with the job to be successful. Q: A lady at my office makes me so mad. She is constantly spreading gossip about one of the guys who works in the shop. I realize that she doesn’t like him, but OMG! She makes a rude comment every time she sees him, and he looks at her like he’s been kicked. I’ve joked with her about why she doesn’t like him, and she just says that he should never have been hired. He’s not my favorite person, but I don’t see any reason to be so mean. How can I stop this? -Houston, Texas Reader
happening. If they aren’t receptive, tell his supervisor. Be careful, or you’ll be the next victim! Q: I sent my resume to a company and called them two or three times. I’ve also talked with a couple of their employees for a long time at job fairs. I KNOW I am qualified for the job and can’t understand why no one has called me for an interview. I have been trying to get them to hire me for three months! What should I do next? -Dayton, Texas Reader A: Nothing. If they had been interested in hiring you, it would already be a done deal.
If you have any questions about interviewing, hiring, or work, just email Ask Diana. I’d love to hear from you. Due to the volume of response, not every question will appear in the column, but most questions will receive an email response within 2 to 3 days.
A: You can make a pretty substantial bet that she’s talking about everyone behind his or her back. Go to HR and let them know what’s

HOW TO GET NOTICED IN THE WORKPLACE Do you have the nagging feeling that you’re being overlooked at work? You know you’re talented and have ideas that can improve the department, yet no one pays attention to you. It is always easy to get noticed for things you don’t need recognized, such as the trip and fall incident at the water cooler last week. The real question is “How can I be noticed in the workplace for the good things?” Here is the answer to that question with 6 easy to follow tips. BE ON TIME As the old saying goes, “If you’re not early, you’re late”. Get to the building early enough that you can be at your desk and working on time. In administrative positions, people spend up to 20 minutes each day with a prepping routine. Meaning, they boot up their computer, go to the coffee machine, say hi to co-workers, and get mail from their inbox. If you are to be there at 9am, be seated at your desk and working at that time. Supervisors take notice when you’re at work early and are producing what they are paying you for. It shows you care enough to be punctual, and also shows good time management skills.

attitude at work; it will only make people not want to be around you. Even if things may not being going in the most positive direction, have an optimistic demeanor at work. When people ask how your day is, don’t grumble. Give a smile and say, “Great” or “Amazing”. Beware, they may ask why, so be prepared to answer with one to two sentences. In the long run, though people don’t remember what you say, but they’ll remember that you have a smile 90% of the time that they saw you. Get enough sleep, eat well, get some exercise, and meditate so you can reset for the next day. Not only will you think clearer and be happier, but your relationships with everyone will benefit from the positive attitude.
BE A TEAM PLAYER If you want to get ahead, you must be a team player. People love knowing that you can be there to help when the time calls for it. Volunteer to help stuff envelopes, load cars, or even to bring the cake for an in-office celebration. If you’re looking to be promoted, show that you can work well with others in your department. It is a requirement that managers know how to communicate as well as be reliable. Employees who consistently work together know who the office snitch is. Do not be this person and know when not to aid the spread of rumors. Managers know who entertain the gossip and who stay out of it. Just focus on yourself and your work and let the others chit-chat away. By following these tips, you will find that people will start talking to you more, asking your opinion, and requesting your help on team projects. Most Effective Resumes From USAJOBS.GOV
The most effective résumés when applying for federal jobs are those that clearly articulate how an applicant’s skills and experiences align to the selection criteria defined by the job opportunity announcement (JOA). Applicants should always tailor their résumé to the job opportunity to which they are applying. Consider these additional tips in ensuring you’ve created and are using the most effective résumé. Pay Attention to Keywords Whether you’re writing your first résumé or updating an existing one, stop and think about which keywords you need to add based on the Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities required for the position. You could be the most qualified person for the position, but you could be lost in a sea of applicants without the right keywords. A Single Keyword Communicates Multiple Skills and Qualifications When a recruiter reads the keyword “analyst,” he or she might assume you have experience in collecting data, evaluating effectiveness, and researching and developing new processes. Just one keyword can have tremendous power and deliver a huge message. Study Job Opportunity Announcements (JOAs) This is the best way to determine important keywords. Review several JOAs, similar to your ideal position – even those in other geographic areas. You’re looking to find skills, experience, education and other credentials important in that occupation. Focus on the “requirements,” “skills” or “qualifications” sections of job ads, and look for “buzzwords” and desirable credentials for your ideal job. Be Concise Recruiters often receive dozens or even hundreds of applications for certain positions. The first step involves quickly skimming through submissions and eliminating candidates who clearly are not qualified. Look at your résumé and ask: • Can a hiring manager see my main credentials within 10 to 15 seconds? • Does critical information jump off the page? • Do I effectively sell myself on the top quarter of the first page?

The Sales Pitch It is crucial that your résumé effectively sells your credentials. Key selling points need to be prominently displayed at the top of the first page of the résumé and directly address each question asked in the KSA section. For example, if an advanced degree is an important qualification, it shouldn’t be buried at the end of a résumé. Use an Editor’s Eye A résumé doesn’t have to contain every detail
of your work experience. So be judicious. If your college days are far behind you, does it really matter that you pledged a fraternity or delivered pizza? The editing step will be difficult if you are holding on to your past for emotional reasons. Use Numbers to Highlight Your Accomplishments If you were a recruiter looking at a résumé, which of the following entries would impress you more? • Wrote news releases. • Wrote 25 news releases in a three-week period under daily deadlines. Clearly the second statement carries more weight, because it uses numbers to quantify the writer’s accomplishment. It provides context that helps the reader understand the degree of difficulty involved in the task. Numbers are powerful résumé tools that will help your accomplishments draw the attention they deserve from prospective employers. With just a little thought, you can find effective ways to quantify your successes on your résumé. Think Money All organizations are concerned about money. So think about and articulate ways you’ve saved money, earned money, or managed money in your internships, part-time jobs and extracurricular activities. A few possibilities may include: •Identified, researched and recommended a new Internet Service Provider, cutting the company’s online costs by 15 percent. • Wrote prospect letter that has brought in more than $25,000 in donations to date. • Managed a student organization budget of more than $7,000. Think Time “Time is money.” Organizations are constantly looking for ways to save time, perform work more efficiently, and meet internal and external deadlines. So, whatever you can do on your résumé to show that you can save time, make time or manage time will grab the recruiter’s immediate attention. Here are some timeoriented examples: • Assisted with twice-monthly payroll activities, ensuring employees were paid as expected and on time. • Attended high school basketball games, interviewed players and coaches afterward, and composed 750-word articles by an 11 p.m. deadline. • Suggested procedures that decreased average order-processing time from 10 minutes to five minutes.
