When you are out of town we pay for lodging and give you $25.00 per-diem a day. Experience is not a qualification for this job; however you will be required to complete a 40 hr Hazwoper course. After completion of our Hazwoper course you will start on the job training, your hourly training rate will be based on experience. I moved here in January in the hope I could ﬁnd some work of any kind. Ive been unemployed since 09 and havent had more than 10 interviews since the company i worked for shut the doors. I also have a multitude of skills from real estate ,hvac&r ,maintenance, delivery driver, to being a blaster for a mine company. So far no luck. Ive been cross country multiple times now searching for work and Ive noticed a horrible kind of trend in the way companies select candidates for open positions. They mostly seem concerned with “internet applications” and the infamous “emailed resume”. What happened to the HR actually talking with you face to face? They act like they are afraid to talk to you and that its an unpardonable sin to bring your resume in person. I know they say its in the name of progress but i say they are loosing out on some of the best tallent out there! I know im old school in the way i do things but if it were me doing the HR’s job, I want to look the person in

the eye and shake thier hand. I want to know whom I’m dealing with. Is it just me or have things got WAY to complicated for our own good? Thanks for listening. -Houston, Texas Reader Welcome to Houston. You know, I see your point about all of the online apps and emailed resumes. I realize that companies don’t always respond to every email or application. One of the reasons that I believe there must be a better way to recruit is the tendency to dehumanize the procedure. Everyone needs to remember that the candidate is a living, breathing human who more than likely wishes that he/ she were not looking for a job! On the other hand, sometimes the volume of response dictates the procedure that is implemented. Think about how impossible it would be to meet every candidate when they are recruiting for three or 4 positions. In addition there are more candidates for each position than there used to be. That means that recruiters are overworked and underappreciated. You cannot take a resume in and expect someone

to sit down and review it while talking with you. The company would have to hire 50 recruiters to take care of all the extra work. You need to spend some time reviewing your resume, matching your skills and talents to the ad, making sure that you present yourself well in your emailed resume, and spell checking anything you send. Have someone help you write an email that doesn’t contain misspelled words and grammatical mistakes. Dear Dave,

We keep getting offers in the mail from a law ﬁrm that offers to protest the assessed value of our home for property tax purposes. They say that we’ll pay them nothing if they can’t save us money, but if they do the fee is 50 percent of the property tax savings. Do you think it’s ethical to dispute these ﬁndings, and are these services legitimate?

The job I have currently is about to be phased out, and I’m looking at two other offers. The pay for both is the same. One is short-term, nine months to a year, and it has a per diem so I wouldn’t have to move. The other job would last much longer, but I’d have to move and that would throw me about $3,500 further into debt. This company acts like it doesn’t want to help with the moving expenses, but I think I’d like the job better. What do you think I should do?

Kristen Dear Kristen, There’s no real problem with this, so long as there are no up-front fees. The real question, though, is whether your assessment is accurate. First, there would have be some kind of basis for the protest – like if your assessment is really out of line compared to similar homes in the neighborhood. Usually, they aren’t assessed at 100 percent. But if you discovered that a comparable home was assessed at 73 percent and yours was based on 82 percent, then you’d have both an ethical and legal right to protest the assessment. I think one of two things will happen. If you talk to this firm, you’re either going to ﬁnd out that there’s something going on with the tax base that makes them think they can actually reduce the numbers, or they’re going to try and hit you with a “processing fee” or some other kind of garbage.

Michael Dear Michael, I’d move. And I’d also try to negotiate the heck out of this company and get them to foot some of the bill for the move. If you’re valuable enough, and they like you enough to want you on their team, then I’d use that as a negotiating point before accepting the position. Tell them that you really want the job and you’re excited about it, but the only thing holding you back is $3,500 in moving costs. You never know until you ask. And at that point they may see the wisdom of kicking in some cash to make it easier for you to decide! —Dave
