Brief 12 — The Faculty
Background
Brief
The Faculty is a platform for which talented, up and coming DJ’s can showcase their work on the rest of the Youtube world. Currently, the Boiler Room has simply gotten too big and is no longer accessible to younger DJ’s who already have a following and have played at festivals but need that step up.
Create an appropriate logotype to suit ‘The Faculty’s’ underground identity. The logotype must work in black and white. It should be distinctly different to ‘Boiler Room’, the leading competitor.
The Faculty invites circa 100-200 people to a venue, no phones, no cameras just them and the DJ’s at hand. We plan to tour the UK going to Newcastle, Bristol and Manchester to bring young talent together and Leeds is definitely on the cards. Ultimately, we hope to rival the Boiler Room in that there are plenty of up and coming hidden talent in various countries just waiting to be discovered. The Faculty will showcase a variety of genres of music, techno, house, progressive house and disco etc. But we are keen to keep the ‘underground’ image going. We will not be showcasing chart toppers etc. So the colours we are looking for are probably just black and white. Nothing confusing. Simplicity really is at the heart of this.
Audience Students & Young Professionals. Mandatory Requirements A high-res logotype, in black and white. A Facebook Cover Photo.

Analyzing The Existing Characters
Working From Semi-Bold To Regular
Above you can see the character set that was completed before the start of 3rd year, all in Semi-Bold. I was pleased with these characters, and decided there was very little to change about them (apart from the metrics).
Although this is a non-standard way of working, my initial inspiration were display typefaces that were found in bold or thicker weights. After researching into the difference in weight, I found that Bold fonts tend to be 700 (of any measurement) in stem thickness, whilst Regular should be 400. My Semi-Bold was in between at 550, so the Regular was created at 400. Previously I had classified the Semi-Bold as Bold, so this helped creating a better definition.

Creating Something Unique
Ligatures
The logotype was created entirely from scratch. To create something quite ‘hard hitting’, no curves were used to construct it’s form. Instead, curves were corners with 45 degree corners added to slightly soften the form. I also decided to curve these edges, as I felt they were still to heavy.
igatures were added for ‘Th’ and ‘ty, to give the logotype more personality.

Facebook Profile In Use

Collateral For the Facebook page, all that was asked for was the logo previously designed as an image for a profile picture, and the same for a cover photo. I tried to push the idea of creating something different, but the client explained they wanted the page set up as soon as possible, and didn’t have time for anything extra.

Logo In Use

The First Event Here you see the launch event - with the logo in use. It was used behind the DJ, and also added to projected videos. You can see corners were added to the logotype. These were requested by the client as a secondary logo for the events, representing being enclosed within a space at the event.
