WELCOME

-

Russell Levenston

WELCOME Firstly, I’d like to welcome tonight’s guest’s and BBL newcomers, Leeds Force, to the Sir David Wallace Arena here at the Loughborough University.

Don’t forget following tonight’s game our next home game will be the BBL Cup quarter final-23rd November @ 4pm VS Glasgow Rocks.

There have been lots of announcements this week around the arena, as funding has been confirmed. With all going to plan we should receive planning permission in the next few weeks. It’s an exciting time at the Riders, with both the present and future looking very bright for the club.

This week we saw a draw for the Semi-Final of the BBL and the winners of our quarter final will play Bristol Flyers. The other semi final sees Newcastle Eagles VS Sheffield Sharks and the winners of the semi final games will play to win the BBL Cup at the NIA - Sunday 11th January 2015 @ 3.30pm.

If you have ever fancied working for a professional basketball organisation now’s your chance - last week we announced 2 exciting positions with both full and part time opportunities. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time community manager to join our team. Plus, full and part time vacancies are available for community coaches. If you feel either of these roles could be for you then please send your CV along with a brief covering letter to info@leicesterriders.co.uk.

The atmosphere here at the SDW arena has been phenomenal and is an exciting indication of things to come! So please make some noise and get behind your team. #RidersUp #Hardworkbringssuccess

Coach Rob

ROB PATERNOSTRO

TOGETHER Welcome to Loughborough University and tonight’s BBL League game vs Leeds Force. We had a productive two weeks of practice which gave us a chance to get healthy. Our early season schedule left us a bit banged up so the week without any games came at the right time for players to be able to rest and recover ahead of today’s game. Last time we played I was very impressed with the way we defended, our guys communicated very well and we were committed to defence from start to finish. We also like the way our roster is contributing, our young players have done a nice job so far this season. They continue to be ready to impact the game anyway they can. Have fun at tonight’s game, we appriciate all your support.

Coach Newby pulled together young British talent that will no doubt continue to improve as the season goes on and into the future years of the club. LAMBLE’S RAMBLE Back at it after a weekend off and previous to that a nice win against Bristol. I personally was very pleased with the win against Bristol, they’ve already had some big wins against good teams this season, not to mention their win against Worcester last weekend.

stepping up well to life in the BBL. Unfortunately for them they did lose a ‘big’ player due to injury. Zak Wells their 7foot centre, who was also averaging near to a ‘double double’, sustained a season ending injury, forcing Leeds to change their tactics.

I think our game against Bristol was our best team defensive performance so far this season, keeping them to under 60 points, but I also feel that we still have many improvements to make if we want to replicate our defensive efforts of the last couple of seasons.

We need to approach this game exactly the same way as the Bristol game; Take nothing for granted and continue to play great team defence.

We’ve been working extremely hard in practice over the last two weeks on offensive and defensive strategies and preparing primarily for today’s opponents, Leeds Force.

Thank you again for your continued support so far this season and making Sir David Wallace a great home venue for us so far this season. I look forward to the noise!! #RiderUp #WeRide

Leeds have recruited well this season revolving their team around young British talent who seem to be

THE STAGE IS SET The WBBL kicked off to a huge start at Loughborough University and now the Final’s venue is set. The inaugural Women’s British Basketball League (WBBL) Play-off Final will be played at University of Worcester Arena in April. It promises to be an exciting climax to the maiden WBBL campaign as all ten clubs fight it out to be crowned the last team standing and the first ever WBBL Play-off winners.

“It seemed like something of a nobrainer to go to a fantastic venue with great facilities like the University Arena, which is synonymous with both the BBL and the women’s game,” explained WBBL Chief Operating Officer, Andy Webb. “We saw during the summer that it can be a great backdrop for women’s basketball when we had the pleasure of the Great Britain women’s national team playing their qualifiers at the Arena and successfully making it to a third EuroBasket Women Final Round.

“We have also seen just how popular basketball is in the city through the great work being undertaken by the Wolves. “With the added bonus of being relatively centrally located, all the things should be in place to make it a memorable day and a fitting occasion to mark another historic moment for the women’s game and the WBBL.” April White, University Arena Manager said “We are thrilled to be hosting the first WBBL Play Off Final at the Arena in April. Basketball at the University Arena has proven extremely popular with the people of Worcester since the venue opened, with huge crowds turning out to cheer on the Worcester Wolves, Great Britain’s Men’s and Women’s Teams and many more. We are sure that the city’s sports fans will welcome the opportunity to watch even more top quality sport. The showpiece event will take place on Sunday 26th April and ticket details will be announced shortly. For more information on the WBBL, go to www.wbbl.org.uk or follow @ wbblofficial

THE JOURNEY

CONTINUES J

amell Anderson is known as a worker on the court but for the last three years he has been making a reputation in the classroom as well, studying to finish his University course. The Nottingham native began playing basketball later than you would have expected, but took to the sport quickly and soon became the six foot eight inch forward we see today. Jamell opted to remain in the UK to pursue his basketball dreams and began studying in London whilst playing with the Essex Pirates however was not able to finish the course before the club folded and forced Jamell to move onto new surroundings in Loughborough. Anderson was one of the first players to join the Loughborough Basketball Programme following it’s formation in 2011 and facilitate good experiences for players exaclty like Jamell. Choosing to continue in the sports field that he began his degree in London in Jamell set to work on the practice floor as he tried to break into a ever more successful Leicesster Riders BBL team as well as in the class room to attempt to finish his degree alongside the professional contracts. Jamell did exactly what he arrived in Loughborough to do, finishing his degree, leading Loughborough University to the best finsh in BUCS for 15 year and developing well as a player to break into the starting line up for the regiening BBL Cup Championship side. Upon graduation Jamell had only positive things to say about the staff and the experiences he had been granted at Loughborough College and Loughborough Univeristy. “Studying whilst playing professional basketball can be considered very difficult and at times it really was challenging. Thanks to the support from Loughborough College and Loughborough University staff, it’s just been so much fun even when it was difficult.” Jamell on a

is releasishing the oppertunity to play full time basis folowing his graduatation.

“It’s great to be able to play full time with the Riders. I have some spare time now in which I would have previously been studying. I can now do things like stretch with our trainer Kico after practice and actually enjoy resting. Last year was hectic and I really wasnt able to look after my body as much as I would have like. I get to play the game that I love everyday so it is great.” Jamell turns his focus soley on basketball and having already progressed to being a starter on the team oppentents.

Max Richardson

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT MAX RICHARDSON JOINED THE LOUGHBOROUGH BASKETBALL PROGRAMME THIS SUMMER THROUGH THE ELITE PLAYER PATHWAY AT LOUGHBOROUGH COLLEGE. NOW SETTLED INTO THE SEASON, MAX CAUGHT US UP ON HIS EXPERIENCES SO FAR.

I’m Max Richardson and this is my first year at Loughborough. I am currently in higher education studying a foundation degree in sports science at Loughborough college. I play for the EBL division 2 team Loughborough Student Riders as well playing for the university first team. I was born in Camden, London and we move down to Brighton when I was two, growing up there. For me basketball first started when I was 11, but before that I used to swim three times a week but that got boring because all we would do is swim lengths. The reason I chose Loughborough was because I heard that it had the best programme for individual progression and they support you and help you progress to the next step. When I came to Loughborough I was happy that the players on the team have the same mindset as me. Some of my achievements, I have represented South east region at U15’s, U16’s and I captained the U17s South East region. I was also selected to play for England U17’s and we went to France to play an international tournament. Last year I played for Worthing Thunder men’s D1, with Thunder I started a few game and played with the likes of Kadiri Richards, Bud Johnston and Josh Brown, playing with these guys I feel like I learnt so much from the last few years and I hope that there will only be improvements from here. As well as I feel like it triggered the start of my desire to become professional.

Coach spotlight

Krumesh Patel

COACH SPOTLIGHT Krumesh Patel is entering his second year with the Leicester Riders Basketball programme but he has been around the Leicester Riders for three years. He started with the community project as a community coach and from there moving on work on the Women’s program as Assistant to the first team and Head Coach of the second team. Krumesh Patel has played basketball since he was 14 years old starting at Rushey Mead school. Through his junior career he played and developed with the Leicester Cannons national league program. He further developed his basketball skills and knowledge by attending Beauchamp basketball academy in Leicester working with coach Dave Greenaway. He continued playing basketball when he chose to go to Leeds University to study Sports and Exercise Science. After his Second year he was offered a coaching scholarship to lead the Leeds University Men’s program as Head coach of the program. “Throughout school and college I always enjoyed playing basketball at the highest level. However as a Point Guard I was always told it was important to have a high basketball IQ. This lead to me coaching from a young age so that I had a better understanding of the game. This trend continued when I went to University and found a passion for not only playing but for coaching too” After a great year of community coaching for the Leicester Riders Krumesh moved to work at Rushey Mead School as Teaching Assistant. This was so that he could make the step up and work for the Women’s Programme on a volunteer basis last year. After a great year with the women’s program last year where he assisted the First team win the National Championship and saw his division 2 team finish 2nd in the league he was offered a full time position with the Leicester Riders. This year he has continued to work in the women’s program in the same role but has also been hired to lead the Girls AASE programme at Charnwood College. “I had a exceptional year last year working with the Women’s programme, I learnt so much from Head coach Matthew Harber and this resulted in me developing as a coach. It was a great achievement being part of the coaching team that went on to win the National Championship. Also it was great to learn from Matt and put that into practice with the second team, we had a great group of young girls and ended the year finishing 2nd in Division 2 making the playoffs and also I was grateful to be voted runner up coach of the year in the North” The Leicester born coach will continue in his role this year aiming for more success with the women’s program. He will continue to work hard to develop the women’s program and help offer girls the best place to develop and get better. “I’m hoping to continue improving as a coach. Everyday I am learning and striving to get better. I want to be able to offer girls the best programme in the country, to give the best opportunity to grow and develop so that they can achieve their dreams. I feel really privileged to be given this role and want to make most of the opportunity.”

It’s gotta be the Shoes

“IT’S GOTTA

BE THE SHOES? Leicester Riders continue to be receive superb support from Nike UK for the 2014/15 season. This year Nike have gone to another level with the design work for the BBL players signature shoes. We take time out to break down what makes the shoes so great. Nike have redesigned the KD 6, transforming it to the best Kevin Durant signature model to date. The most noticable feature is that Nike has replaced the foot strap, something that has been missing from the shoe since the KD IV. The strap added an additional support to the mid shoe, allowing great mobility in the foot whilst still feeling secure. Nike have redsigned the traction of the shoe, returning to the the story telling patterns that have featured in a previous models with a narrower cut to allow great traction indoors but maintaining durability. Max Zoom cushioning returns in the heel moving to a smallers 8mm Zoom in the frontfoot maintains flexability and feel in the shoe whilst giving great comfort and support on landing. This year the design features the Riders home colourways, with a black under tone and red fire work design this is the hottest Riders colourway to date. To top off the design a glow in the dark sole has been added to ensure the players are always noticed.
