Coach Rob

ROB PATERNOSTRO

TROPHY BEGINS Welcome to tonight’s trophy game versus the Leeds Force. This is a knockout competition; you win you move on, you lose you go home. These games are always fun to play in for both players and coaches alike . Last weekend’s game against the Bristol Flyers was a game in which we led from start to finish and played well on both ends of the floor. I was really happy with the way in which we paid attention to detail, especially on the defensive end which saw us hold them to under 60 points. Anytime you do that you know your team is locked in on the defensive end of the floor. This is our third time playing Leeds and each time we have been impressed by the way they are organised , it’s important that we maintain the focus we have played with the last few weeks and pay attention to detail. The crowds here in Loughbourough have been excellent , there is a real buzz about Riders basketball and we are looking forward to an exciting second half of the season. Thanks for your support

All the best Rob Paternostro

The 6ft 8” Forward followed up his 20 points at home against Leeds Force with a staggering 31 points at the Copperbox against London Lions to open 2015.

It’s Rashad’s second year in England after re-signing with the Riders for a second term this summer, having previously played his basketball with Savannah State University in America.

“My aim for this season is to win and have fun,” said Hassan. “I love playing basketball and I want people to know that every time I step on the court.” “This season has been going very well so far. LEICESTER COMMUNITY SPORTS ARENA

SITE WORK BEGINS The Leicester Community Sports Arena project took another important step, with the commencement of site works on the 5th January 2015. The new, state-of-the-art £4.5 million multi-purpose sports arena, which will be based in Charter Street, is being built by a joint venture of Leicester Riders, Leicester City Council and Leicester College. The Arena will be the new home to the Leicester Riders and Leicester Cobras Wheelchair Basketball Teams, but will also be a regional basketball centre of excellence, and serve as a large multi-use sports venue for the College and the local community. Charter Street is formerly part of a gas works, as well as having a variety of industrial uses during it’s nearly 200 years of industrial heritage, and as a result the ground is contaminated. Thus the works to remediate the site are a necessary first stage in the project, and following a number of studies and reviews of options with the Environment Agency and

the City Council, a remediation strategy has been agreed, and contractors appointed. Updated groundwater monitoring measurements will be taken on the 5th January and the clean-up work on site will commence on 6th January 2015.T Kevin Routledge, a Director of Leicester Community Sports Arena Limited, said, “This is a very important and necessary stage in the project, and we are now delighted to get on with the reclamation works. Working on brown field sites involves a number of agencies, particularly as we are located on the Grand Union Canal, and the most thorough examination of all options have been considered.” “We are now delighted to have been given the go-ahead and we can get on with the excavation and clean-up. That will then get the site to a condition that we can get on with the foundations and the building of the arena.”

BARRY LAMBLE

LAMBLE’S RAMBLE I hope you are just as excited as we are to be back in full flow of the season again. So far 2015 has had a good start with three wins out of three, including getting a great win over London in the Copper Box. The only downside of 2015 so far is having the Cup Final already been played but not actually participating. Yes, I’m still a little bitter about that and I didn’t actually watch the game as I couldn’t put my wife through me being miserable on a day off! That is now out of the way though and we are still in contention for three pieces of silverware this season which is a great position to be in. The bid for the next piece of silverware, the Trophy, starts tonight against the much improved Leeds Force. I know we have played them twice so far and have come away with two wins but they continue to improve throughout the season and will come into this game fighting so this will by no means be an easy match up or a walk over.

Leeds are a well coached team with talented group of players that can win games, as they have already proved several times this season and we don’t want this game to be another one of those wins for them. Defensively we have stepped up in recent games keeping teams to low scores and that is what we will continue to do and it is what we have taken immense pride in over the past few seasons. We have plenty of ‘fire power’ on the offensive and even though we have games, or periods of games, where we struggle to get the ball in the basket we always make sure that the other team are not scoring either, as the saying goes; “Offence wins games, defence wins championships”... let us hope that’s true! The atmosphere in Sir David Wallace has been incredible for the last few games and I’ve now come to expect that high standard so I don’t expect anything less tonight. You guys are our sixth man on the court and really do make a difference so please continue to MAKE SOME NOISE!!!

ANDRE ARISSOL

ANDRE ARISSOL

DEVELOPING Leicester Riders and Charnwood College Academy Player Andre Arissol reflected on his recent performances with the England U18 Boys at the Haris Memorial Tournament. England finished third overall in the three day tournament, in a third place place off game in which Arissol led the scoring for the England U18 team with 18 points. Arissol shared his thoughts on the experience of the tournament following the final game. “The Haris tournament was an amazing experience, the level of talent there was so beneficial for myself and the team, coming across different style of play from European basketball to American basketball gave us the challenges we needed judge ourselves as a team.” Arissol returns to Loughborough and Charnwood College this weekend to prepare for the second half of the season with the undefeated U18 and EABL teams. “We are all so pumped for the second half of the season, I think with this dominant run we’ve had we just need to continue to push hard in training so when it comes to competition time it doesn’t phase us. The most thing I’m enjoying about this season so far is the outcome of all the hard work I’m putting in, from last year and the start of this year, a lot of things are falling into place, I’m also enjoying the hard working atmosphere of our team, we’re all on the same page and can’t wait to push this season all the way to the finals.”

MATTHEW HARBER

READY TO GO WBBL Head Coach Matthew Harber returned from the Christmas break to immediately enter the second annual Betty Codona Classic in which a narrow loss to the hosting Sheffield Hatters in the semi-final knocked the team out of the competition.

RM: How was the Betty Codona Classic?

Matthew Harber took time out of the scheduled preparations for the first WBBL game of 2015 to sit down with Riders Magazine.

MH: It was a good way for us to bust out the cobwebs so to speak and I think it’s helped us kick start practices this month. I think it gave us a good chance to see different players in various situations and it has helped to shape our training plans for this month. It was disappointing to lose to Sheffield in the way that we did and we collapsed in the third period, but I know that we will be better as time goes on.

RM: Coach, thanks for taking the time! How have preparations been going ahead of Leeds Beckett on Saturday?

RM: 2014 was a great year for the team and the Women’s programme at the Riders, what is new for the team in 2015?

MH: Our priority right now is to establish rhythm for 2015, so that’s what we want to achieve in the Leeds game. Our priorities will be to establish our game style

MH: We have learnt a lot of lessons in the first half of the season and we are already making adjustments that are going to help us operate better as a team. Our younger

players have learnt a lot of lessons about becoming a senior player and our seniors are working to become more consistent. You can expect us to play a little different at both ends of the floor, but I don’t want to give too much away too soon! Alongside the WBBL, Coach Harber continues to lead the students on the team in the BUCS competition with Loughborough University. Coach Harber led Loughborough to it’s first BUCS Championship in over a decade two seasons ago following a number of additions to the roster in a busy recruiting summer. Since the BUCS Championship season the team has seen a number of high-calibre players graduate to continue lives both within and outside basketball. The new look Loughborough team maintain key players in Maaja Bratka, Georgia Jones and captain Rheanne Bailey and have started the BUCS season well. Coach Harber’s team remain a top the BUCS table with a record of 5-2 with three games remaining on BUCS competition before playoffs begin building to the Championship game at Loughborough. RM: How great is it to host the BUCS Championship game at Loughborough? MH: Really happy that BUCS Finals will be held here in Loughborough. Our team are very proud and sentimental towards the BUCS competition – I think because it is a great representation of the ‘student-athlete’ - and they enjoy representing Loughborough University and Loughborough College. We will be doing everything in our power to be in that final this year. RM: Off the court, how was the time off over the Christmas break for you and the team? MH: It was much needed. The pre-Christmas schedule was tough – we had a lot of games and it takes its toll on your mind and body. The girls benefited a lot from it I think. I had a good break and I always enjoy that time of year and spending time with family. I’m ready to go for this year now! The Leicester Riders Women remain in the running for a great playoff spot in the WBBL and as the young team continues to mature and develop they are certainly one to watch.

Mark Jarram

MARK JARRAM

LOOKING AHEAD Loughborough’s Student Riders team finished the first half of the season with a string of positive performances that Head Coach Mark Jarram was pleased to see. Mid-way through his second season as Head Coach of the Men’s programme at Loughborough University, Coach Jarram checked in with Riders Magazine to discuss how the team is progressing. RM: How has the Christmas break been for you and the team? MJ: It was good. I think we all definitely needed it. That semester is the longest one for the guys on the lead up to the break and with the weather changing and deadlines for school work it can get very demanding. So it’s important that the guys got to escape off campus, have a change of scenery and enjoy some time with their family. It also gave some of the players the opportunity to take care of some niggling injuries and rest; everyone has recharged their batteries and we are now back in the swing of things after our first week of practice. It gave me a good time to reflect and evaluate on the first half of the season, watch a bunch of game tape and think about the direction we want to go and adjustments we need to make here for the second half of the season.

32

RM: What are your goals in the second half of the season for the Student Riders team? MJ: We are definitely trying to keep it really simple this second half of the year. Number one priority is we continue to improve everyday as individuals and a team. We want to become a team that nobody in a league wants to play against and also play a great brand of basketball that will allow us to win the game in front of us. That’s all. We are aiming for a top four finish in the league, which is very competitive this year. If we secure that home court seed for the playoffs it will provide us a good opportunity to progress and keep our season alive. We just want to make sure we are playing in the meaningful games at the end of the year, playing a really great brand of basketball with all the players improving every day. RM: The Loughborough University team continues to compete in the ever competitive BUCS competition. How has the competition been so far this year? MJ: Yeah, the competitive level in this league continues to grow. It’s only helping to create, what many believe, to be one of the most competitive leagues in the country. Our season has been a mixed bag. We’ve struggled with some

LU Basketball consistency in our games which has created maybe not the record we’d want. However, we are not getting to caught up in that as last year was very similar and we just stayed focused on getting better and trying to play our best basketball come playoff time. This year is no different. We will continue improve every week and use the rest of the regular season to be sure we are ready for the knockout stages. RM: A number of the students within the Loughborough College and Loughborough University compete with the Leicester Riders professional team. How has the combination worked for the roster? MJ: I like that we provide players the opportunity to continue their studies. I’m a big believer in what will life after basketball look like for our players. Being able to do masters programmes or even a full undergraduate degree means they are thinking long term. It also means that we obviously get that higher calibre of players. This means not only is the level of basketball better, but also I enjoy the impact these more experienced players can have amongst the younger up and coming players. The opportunity for them to also help the development of their teammates is really cool. Our programme is a good model for how to make studying at a high level whilst playing high level basketball work. And it’s great to see many other BUCS premier teams all linked with professional teams and following the same kind of structure. High level basketball and high level studies is a good combination for their careers. RM: Alongside the experience professional players involved in the Loughborough Basketball Programme, your roster features some very exciting first year players. How have the freshman in the team come along in the first part of the year?

-

MJ: We’ve had great contributions from our freshman so far and I’m really happy with them. I love how quickly they settled in and made an impact right the way. Max Richardson has really impressed me so far, he’s a versatile player that has a motor which many guys simply don’t. He’s a player that coaches love because he just does his job and more when he’s on the court. I’m also really impressed by our freshman PG’s, Kevin and Pak who have come in this year and help add to the competitive environment. Players are fighting for positions and spots on rosters and it keeps everyone challenged and moving forwards. The best thing about the freshman is the are coachable and want to get better, want to learn and improve. That’s a characteristic I love and want to be around every day throughout our programme. RM: This year the BUCS Championship Final will be played in Loughborough, no doubt an exciting event! What would it mean to return to the Final to play in front of the home crowd? MJ: No doubt! I’m pleased that Loughborough has been recognised as a place to host such a prestigious event. And we are absolutely aiming to be playing on that day. Last year was a great achievement to make it and be competing in that championship game, unfortunately the result left a bitter taste and we want to try and go one better this year. It will be tough, I believe this year is very competitive, maybe the most open it has been for some years looking at the regular season results so far. It would mean a lot for our team and our programme to make it back to the final, but we must ensure we take it one game at a time and focus on putting in performances to help us achieve that goal.

PAKADASHE CHINGOMBE

A SHINING EXAMPLE Leicester born Pakadashe Chingombe, more commonly known as Pak, joined the Loughborough Basketball programme this September and although has impressed on court with the Men’s first team it is is off-court commitment that has caught the attention of a lot of people. Riders Magazine caught up with Pak over the Christmas break for a short interview to discuss his time in Loughborough so far. RM: When and how did you start playing basketball? PC: I started playing basketball at the age of 11 after watching the movie Like Mike. RM: Why did you choose to come to Loughborough to study and continuing playing? PC: I chose Loughborough because its close to home and both the education and Basketball are at a high level. RM: How are you finding basketball in Loughborough after your first few months? PC: Basketball in Loughborough has been great so far, there have been ups and down due to being unfamiliar with a new program but I have enjoyed my time here so far and look forward to the future. RM: What are you looking forward to in the second half of the season? PC: I am looking forward to the National League competition I honestly believe that we can finish in the top 4 of the Division 2 League and make a strong run in the play-offs. RM: As well as playing, you coach a lot. How do you find coaching? Why is it important to you? PC: I enjoy coaching because it gives me a chance to pass on everything I have learned to the next generation of players. Coaching is important to me because I believe in passing on knowledge of what I have learned. RM: On top of your main coaching role you give back a lot of time to the club, how important do you feel it is for young players to give back? PC: I believe its important to give back to the club because I personally would not have the opportunities I have if this

Krossover

MICHAEL HANSON-MORRIS

THE KROSSOVER EFFECT Leicester Riders Performance Analyst Michael HansonMorris continues to work with both the BBL and WBBL teams using Krossover. Hanson-Morris shared his thoughts on how Krossover is changing the game at the Riders. With so many back to back games Krossover really adds an extra element to what we can do in the short time between the games. Typically as soon as the game ends I’ll start the tape upload before catching up with the coaching staff about initial observations. I’ll then head back upstairs to input the game information and once the upload is complete around 45 minutes after the final buzzer I’ll then switch off for the night. The time difference back to the United States means the game breakdown will arrive before we tip the next day which allows me to give some more detailed feedback to the coaching staff before we play again which is a near unique advantage. The great example of the benefits of using Krossover would be the Glasgow series for the BBL team. Although it wasn’t ideal playing the same team 4 times in 8 games the level of detail we could go into really allowed us to lock in. The set analysis in particular allowed Coach Rob to look into potential sets to work on during preparation for the next game for both teams. This really excites us as it shows that Krossover will continue to become more and more important as the season progresses in both reflection and preparation. The best thing about Krossover is that is was so easy to become acustomed to. I’m comfortable with the system and the time we have saved in our own game breakdown has allowed me to experiment and hopefully we can take our analysis system up to the next level.
