ernen Sie die Schweiz von ihrer schönsten Seite kennen. Schon die Anreise nach Vals ist ein Erlebnis. Von Zürich führt die Autobahn Richtung Chur, voraus die schneebedeckten Gipfel des Glarus, zur Seite zunächst die weissen Segelboote auf dem Zürichsee. Hinter Chur geht es ab von der Autobahn und hinauf ins Hochgebirge, allmählich wechselt die Vegetation von knorrigen Nadelbäumen zu grasbedeckten Matten. Nach nur zwei Stunden Fahrt erreichen wir Vals und tauchen in eine andere Welt ein. Getting to Vals is an experience in itself: Heading out of Zurich, the freeway to Chur first takes you past gleaming white sailboats out on the lake, then on toward the snow-capped peaks of Glarus. After Chur, you leave the freeway and begin a steep ascent. The vegetation gradually morphs from gnarled conifers to a covering of grass. Two hours is all it takes before Vals immerses you in a completely different world. Time itself seems to slow down. Neighbors stand talking at the garden fence. Birds of prey circle sedately. The dull chime of bells can be heard as sheep meander across the meadows. Traditional coarse, granite-faced houses decked out with brightly colored geraniums bear mute testimony to

Ein Aufenthalt im 7132 ist eine Zeitreise, von Mies van der Rohe und Le Corbusier zu Kengo Kuma und Tadao Ando

Die traditionellen, mit Geranien herausgeputzten Häuser mit ihren groben Granit-Fassaden zeugen vom jahrhundertelangen Trotzen der Dorfbewohner gegen die eisigen Winter. Willkommen in Vals, einem Ort mit 1000 Einwohnern, 1000 Schafen, 1000 Gästebetten und legendären Thermalquellen. Auch das berühmte Schweizer Mineralwasser »Valser« sprudelt hier aus dem Boden. Am Rande des Dorfes wirkt das 7132 Hotel zunächst ein wenig wie ein Fremdkörper mit seiner vermeintlich typischen 1970er Jahre Architektur. Doch schon beim Betreten der Halle wird klar, das gehört zum Konzept. Hier wird Architektur lebendig gehalten und man wirft nicht einfach alle paar Jahre die Inneneinrichtung

raus, um sie kurzlebigen Zeitströmungen anzupassen. Nein. Im 7132 wird die Handschrift der Architekten originalgetreu erhalten. Selbstverständlich werden Möbel und Teppiche ersetzt, aber eben durch die genau gleichen Materialien, wie sie der Architekt ursprünglich verwendete. Durch diverse Erweiterungen startet der Gast im 7132 auf eine Entdeckungsreise durch die Baukunst der letzten 60 Jahre. Grosse Namen der Szene haben dem Hotel ihren Stempel aufgedrückt. Der Schweizer Peter Zumthor ist für weite Teile des Hotel und die Therme verantwortlich, dazu später noch mehr. Ein Aufenthalt im 7132 ist eine Zeitreise, von Mies van der Rohe und Le Corbusier zu Kengo Kuma und Tadao Ando, die weitere Räume im Flügel des »House of Architects« gestalteten. the centuries villagers have spent defying the icy winters. Welcome to Vals, a tiny hamlet of 1,000 inhabitants, 1,000 sheep, 1,000 hotel beds and legendary hot springs. The famous Valser mineral water too is retrieved from local wells. At first glance, the 7132 Hotel looks a bit out of place, tacked onto the edge of the village. »Typical '70s architecture« is the first impression. The moment you enter the lobby, however, you understand the method in the madness. Here, in this remote corner of the Alpine republic, architecture is a living thing. People don't throw out their fittings and furnishings every couple of years to keep up with short-lived fads and fashions. Far from it. There is nothing counterfeit – nothing at all – about the architects' signatures as revealed, embodied in the 7132. Carpets and chairs and tables are naturally replaced when they need to be. But they are replaced by exactly the same materials as the creators originally used. A series of extensions takes guests on a journey of discovery through the architectural styles of the past 60 years. Household names in this exalted scene have left their mark on the hotel. Swiss architect Peter Zumthor is responsible for large swathes of the hotel and thermal baths; but more about that later. Staying at the 7132 is like traveling through time, from Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier to Kengo Kuma and Tadao Ando. The latter two have crafted other spaces in the House of Architects wing. Stuccoed rooms sporting more strident hues are equally popular among guests. Three 90-m2 suites fashioned by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma are due to open this August. Bathed in light, the rooms command breathtaking views of the mountainous countryside. The stand-out design feature is the use of quartzite quarried locally in Vals. The luxurious minimalism of the rooms gives each guest a refuge of rest and tranquility. Through the outsized panoramic windows, the raw, rugged mountain scenery is a joy to behold.

In the House of Architects, new rooms by Radao Ando will be unveiled to coincide with the grand opening in July. Their sophisticated design draws on the tradition of Japanese tea houses. Clever, sensitive arrangement and excellent workmanship combine to create a unique spatial experience. In the words of the master himself: »The intimacy of the infinite microcosm in a limited space is a central element of tea house architecture.« The 7132 is equally well endowed in the culinary department. The Aarnhoog was already a snug little gem when it was added to the Fährhaus Collection. An oasis of tranquility and, by Sylt's standards, a decidedly comfy one, nestled in the Keitum countryside that is typical of the island. 48

Die Außenansicht: Reetgedeckter Ziegelbau in zwei Gebäudeteilen. Beide, nachträglich durch einen unterirdischen Gang miteinander verbunden. Darin eingebettet und, in mediterraner Anmutung fast so belassen, wie vor 23 Jahren, eine äußerst großzügige Spa- und Badelandschaft. In zeitloser Zartheit ausgestaltet. Sie könnte ein optisches Zitat aus Goethes Italienischer Reise sein. Doch dreiundzwanzig Jahre nach der Eröffnung des »Aarnhoog« wurde ein erneutes Facelifting des ehemaligen Bauernhofes dringend notwendig. Die erwachsenen Gäste von heute waren damals Kinder. Die Besitzer und die Gastgeber des Schwesterhotels (Fünf Sterne; Gourmet Küche mit zwei Sternen) »Fährhaus« im nahen Munkmarsch haben, in enger Abstimmung mit dem Architektenteam, ein neues Konzept erarbeitet, das auf zwei Ideen basiert: Europäisches Top-Design und trotzdem Gemütlichkeit! Gemeinsam unter einem »Reetdach«. Gut 165 Tage dauerte die innenarchitektonische Schlankheitskur. An deren Ende waren es zwei Suiten weniger. Elf statt dreizehn. Vor allem auch wegen

der längst bindenden baurechtlichen Vorgaben. Die meisten Suiten bieten nun sinnvolle und nützliche Gimmicks, wie Sauna, Infrarotkabinen oder Fitnessgeräte. Dazu modernste Unterhaltungselektronik: LED TV und 300 digitale Radiosender. Der Auftrag zur Sanierung der Architektur und Innenarchitektur wurde – ohne Ausschreibung – im vergangenen Jahr an »Volquardsen Architekten Partnerschaft« in Westerland vergeben. Die alleinige Bauleitung lag bei der design-affinen Architektin Birte Welling-Volquardsen. Und hin und wieder war es stressig: Oft waren geduldige Schlichtungen nötig: »Die Synchronisierung aller Arbeitsschritte der Gewerke war teilweise strapaziös«, betont die inzwischen wieder völlig entspannte Bauleiterin. Der »Aarnhoog« wurde zum Boutiquehotel, blieb das kleine Schmuckstück. Konkurrenzlos zu den anderen Luxushotels auf Sylt. Ein veritabler Spagat, dem Niveau des »Fährhauses« (12 Suiten, 29 Doppelzimmer) gerecht zu werden und andererseits die Intimität eines Wohnzim-

mers schaffen. Der »Aarnhoog« Gast sucht ein kuscheliges Zuhause. Die Vorgaben waren also Gemütlichkeit und Individualität. Der Gast findet sie im Design und der Ausstattung jedes Zimmers wieder. Das Interior Design orientiert sich überzeugend an der Eleganz der 1950er Jahre. Mit warmen Farben, individuell und modern gestalteten Möbeln und Designklassikern. Besonders attraktiv, die Tapetenentwürfe von Elli Popp (alias Katja Behre geb. in Hannover) aus London. Die Designerin hat es bereits als Ausstatterin in die Etagen der europäischen Lu-

xushotellerie geschafft. Die früheren Namen der Suiten wurden beibehalten und weisen thematisch auf die Sylter Inselflora hin: Waldveilchen, Grasnelke oder Strandaster. Die Leitungen für Wasser und Strom mussten saniert werden. Der gesamte Bau war außerdem immer noch zu sehr verschachtelt: 45-Grad-Ecken, Rundungen, Alkoven-Betten. Das Thema Brandschutz ist ebenfalls baurechtlich relevant. Daher dürfen die Keller auch nicht weiter als Aufenthaltsräume genutzt werden.

The two parts of the thatched brick building were later linked by a subterranean passageway. One integral feature, its Mediterranean allure virtually untouched for more than two decades, was a very generously dimensioned spa and bathing area. Timelessly exquisite, it could have been a visual quote from Goethe's Italian travels.

Twenty-three years on from the Aarnhoog's inception, however, the former farmstead was in desperate need of a facelift. Today's grownup guests were still children back when it first opened. The owners of the F채hrhaus sister hotel in nearby Munkmarsch (where five stars grace the hotel and two the gourmet cuisine) worked hand-in-glove with a team of architects to formulate a new two-pronged concept: top

European design that still prizes cozy comfort – all under a single thatched roof. It took 165 days or so to slim the hotel down and get it back in shape. At the end of the process, the Aarnhoog was two suites lighter, down from thirteen to eleven, mainly to ensure compliance with German building law. Most of the suites now boast sensible and useful features such as saunas, infrared cabins and fitness equipment. And all, of course, are fitted with ultra-modern entertainment electronics such as LED TVs and a choice of 300 digital radio channels. The order to revamp both the architecture and the interior design was awarded last year – without invitation to tender – to Volquardsen Architekten Partnerschaft in Westerland. Supervision of the construction project was entrusted exclusively to Birte Welling-Volquardsen. Now utterly relaxed once again, the architect with a pronounced affinity for design readily admits that things got stressful from time to time, repeatedly requiring patient arbitration: »Keeping all the different work steps in synch was sometimes exhausting.« The Aarnhoog is now a boutique hotel, but has lost none of its gem-like sparkle. Meeting

the exacting standards of the Hotel Fährhaus (12 suites, 29 double rooms) while at the same time creating the intimacy of a living room is no mean feat: There really is nothing else quite like it on Sylt. Guests at the Aarnhoog want a home from home where they can curl up by the fireside. »Cozy individuality« was thus the goal now realized to perfection in the design and fittings of every single room. The interior design convincingly revives the elegance of the 1950s: warm hues, modern, individually crafted furnishings and classic designs. One genuine highlight are the wallpaper patterns from London-based Elli Popp (aka Hanover-born Katja Behre), who has already made a name for herself as an outfitter extraordinaire to European luxury hotels. The suites have retained their original names, each of which pick up on local floral themes: Waldveilchen (hedge violet), Grasnelke (thrift) and Strandaster (sea aster). The water pipes and electric wiring had to be overhauled, and the entire building simply had too many nooks and crannies, 45-degree corners, cambered walls and alcove beds. Fire prevention is another important legal concern, as a result of which the rooms in the basement can no longer be used as guest facilities. c c m a g # 2 / 2 01 5

Für Ose Franzen von der »Lichtinsel« ist der »Aarnhoog« ein Schmelztiegel der Europäischen Designkultur. Möbel und Accessoires, Leuchten und Lampen wurden in diesem Sinne ausgewählt. Auch die Nähe zum nordischen Nachbarn spielt eine Rolle. Louis Poulsen, ist Däne und Hersteller von Leuchten von Arne Jacobsen. Die Kupferleuchten von stammen von Catalani & Smith aus Italien. Auch deutsche Top Designer sind vertreten: Wie etwa Axel Meise von Occhio aus München, mit eleganten

und innovativen Lichtkonzepten. Mehr als 400 Lampen und Leuchten wurden neu installiert. Dann der 8. März 2015: Auf den Tag genau acht Monate nach der ganztägigen BemusterungsKlausur, stieß ein man mit einem Schluck Schampus auf die gelungene Wiedergeburt des »Aarnhoog« an. Das mit viel Mut und subtiler Sachkenntnis von Inhaberin Gisela Mankel und dem Bauteam entworfene neue Design sowie der Stil des »Aarnhoog« sollen, so Robert Jopp, erst einmal für mindestens zehn Jahre die Suiten füllen. Vielleicht wird die nächste Generation der Syltgäste neue Ideen, Wünsche und Ansprüche anmelden. Aber bis dahin werden noch viele Sonnentage Sylt erwärmen und ebenso viele Stürme über die Insel hinwegfegen.

The new-look Aarnhoog now only serves breakfast and, in the afternoons, coffee and cakes in the »Stuv«. All other meals are taken at the Fährhaus in Munkmarsch: in the Käpt'n Selmer Stube, at the Mara Sand restaurant for resident guests (overseen by head chef Alexander Klein) or at the Fährhaus gourmet restaurant, where two-star chef Alexandro Pape has been at the helm for many years. A shuttle service runs back and forth between the two establishments. Ose Franzen, a native of the »island of light«, sees the Aarnhoog as a melting pot of European design culture. Furniture and accessories, lamps and lighting have all been consciously chosen with this in mind. The location's close proximity to its Nordic neighbors also clearly has an influence: Louis Poulsen, himself a Dane, makes lamps for Arne Jacobsen. The copper lamps hail from Italian firm Catalani & Smith. Top German designers – such as Axel Meise from Munich-based Occhio – likewise get a piece of the action with their elegant and innovative lighting concepts. More than 400 new lamps and luminaires have been installed. March 8, 2015 – eight months to the day since the blueprints had been reviewed and approved in a full-day, closed-door session – was the big day. Glasses were raised to toast the successful rebirth of the Aarnhoog. According to Robert Jopp, General Manager of the Fährhaus Collection, the new design crafted so courageously and yet so subtley by owner Gisela Mankel and the construction team will remain married to the Aarnhoog's own unmistakable style as the formative influence on the suites for at least the next ten years. Maybe the next generation of visitors to Sylt will register fresh ideas and bring with them new expectations. Yet many a storm will sweep across the island and many a sunny day will bless it with gentle warmth and unique light before that happens.

After studying design with a focus on photography at Professor Hans Pieler’s department at The University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HAWK, Hildesheim, Germany), he has been living and working as a freelance photographer in Berlin since 2005. His visual language is classical and documentary and his photos appear in international magazines and publications. Lately J.W. was working on the illustrated book Lisbon which has been issued in the series of annual editions of the mare Publishing House.

Extensive renovation work supervised as of 2006 by celebrated and courageous French architect Jacques Garcia resolutely atoned for a number of the transgressions of design that had crept in in preceding years, the said demons being cast out in favor of a return to the timeless elegance – and astonishing achievements – of traditional Moroccan crafts. The exquisite arrangement of the public spaces, rooms and suites alike certainly meets the expectations of high-end visitors and can, once again, be a source of pride for the royal city of Marrakech. From both balconies in the extravagant, comfortably appointed suite, one gazes out over the palms in parts of the 300 yearold garden, across the medina and, on a clear day, as far as the Atlas Mountains, whose over 4,000-meter peaks boast a perhaps surprisingly durable snow covering. Sir Winston Churchill, for whom a suite was always reserved, captured this vista in the pictures he painted on his numerous visits to Marrakech. Yet the »Red City« and La Mamounia appealed not only to his inner artist: It was here that he met with c c m a g # 2 / 2 01 5

Die Körper und Seele entspannenden Treatments eines auf 2’500 Quadratmetern sich ausdehnenden Spa werden auch von der bessergestellten Gesellschaft von Marrakesch geschätzt.

Draussen auf dem riesigen Platz schlafen auch die Schlangen, sammeln Kraft für den Stress, dem sie Abend für Abend von lärmenden Menschenmassen mit ihren Blitzlichtern ausgesetzt sind und von dem ewig gleichen Gedudel. Das Durchstreifen der nun fast menschenleeren Souks endet im Nirgendwo. Da helfen auch die in viel zu grosser Höhe angebrachten Richtungs-

Fragt man jene, die dort wohnen oder zumindest dort Handel treiben, ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit gross, in eine dritte Direktion gewiesen zu werden, vor allem dann, wenn sich in dieser Richtung das eigene Geschäft oder das eines Verwandten befindet. Am Abend, wenn das Leben in der Medina so richtig erwacht ist, lässt man sich am besten vom Mahlstrom der Besucher treiben, bis man irgendwo ankommt, von wo aus das mächtige Minarett der im zwölften Jahrhundert von den Almohaden erbauten Koutoubia Moschee sichtbar wird und einem den Weg weist. Der Souk gleicht einem Labyrinth aus Gassen und Gässchen, wo nach Einbruch der Dunkelheit von überall her und aus allen Himmelsrichtungen die Menschen herbeiströmen und es scheint, als ergiesse sich die gesamte Bevölkerung Marrakeschs nun auf die Djemaa el Fna, vorbei an den Orangenpressern, zahllosen Leder- und sonstigen Souvenirbuden, an Ständen mit duftenden Essenzen, Läden voller betäubender Gewürze und immer wieder Lederutensilien (schliesslich ist Marrakesch auch die Stadt der Gerber). Verkäufer in ihren Läden und Lädchen – manche kaum grösser als ein »hole in the wall«, überbieten sich laut und gestenreich bei ihrem Bemühen, die Aufmerksamkeit der vor-

beiziehenden Karawane auf sich und ihre Ware zu lenken. Weisse Dampfwolken schweben über der nächtlichen Djemaa el Fna, hervorgerufen von den zahllosen Garküchen, wo mit klebrigen Speisenkarten wedelnde, lukullische Wunder verheissende Kellner und Animateure die Plätze auf den dicht bei dicht stehenden Bänken, Stühlen und an den Tischen zuweisen; eine Duftwolke aus einheimischen Spezereien vermischt sich mit jener der Essenzen von den Nachbarständen. Berge von Schaf-Hackfleisch verwandeln sich brutzelnd in Töpfen und Pfannen in verlockende Gerichte. Die Begeisterung für Innereien, Tierschädel und ausgelöste Hammelaugen bleibt eher den Einheimischen vorbehalten. Es sind keineswegs nur Kinder, die mit offenem Mund und grossen Augen den Geschichten der bärtigen alten Männer lauschen. Diese verstehen es durchaus, auch die Erwachsenen routiniert in ihren Bann zu ziehen. Von im nächtlichen Zwielicht oder unter blakenden Glühbirnen agierenden Gauklern und Hütchenspielern, den hypnotischen Gebärden der Märchenerzähler und Schlangenbeschwörer in eine Nebenwelt entrückt und umhüllt von allen Wohlgerüchen des Orients schlafwandle ich in Richtung der langen Reihe grüner, silberbeschlagener Pferdekutschen, die nachts in der Altstadt die Taxis ersetzen und von denen mich nun eine durch die frische Nachtluft zurück zum La Mamounia bringt, während ich, noch immer

pear to contradict each other anyway, at times pointing vaguely to a crossroads of tiny alleyways leading in different directions. Having arrived here and asked someone who lives or at least trades in the vicinity, you are more than likely to be pointed in yet another direction – especially if the person you are talking to (or one of their relatives) has a shop down that way… In the evening, when the medina is teeming with life once more, the best thing to do is let the maelstrom of visitors carry you along until you reach somewhere where you can see the imposing minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque, built in the 12th century by the Almohads. A familiar landmark at last! The souk is like a labyrinth of narrow streets and alleys. Once night has fallen, people flock here from all points of the compass as though Marrakech were spilling its entire population onto the Jemaa el Fna. A tidal wave of humanity sweeps past the

orange pressers, past countless leather goods and souvenir stalls, past stands selling aromatic essences and shops full of intoxicating spices, all interspersed with still more leather-made utensils (Marrakech is, after all, the city of the tanners). From their stores and kiosks, some of them little more than a hole in the wall, the traders wave and gesticulate, vying vociferously for the attention of the passing caravan. Clouds of white steam hang over the night-darkened square, byproducts of the innumerable eating houses whose waiters and animateurs, brandishing sticky menu cards and promising Lucullan marvels, harry the hungry toward squashed up benches and cramped tables. Spicy aromas mingle with the essences from the neighboring stands as mountains of minced mutton sizzle and hiss themselves into tempting dishes in a proliferation of pots and pans. Ich entscheide mich für eine lauschige Sitzecke auf der Terrasse, wo ein exzellenter Drink von einem noch exzellenteren Kellner im goldverzierten weissen und offenbar massgeschneiderten Mamounia-Dress gereicht wird, während vor dem geistigen Auge Szenen aus Hitchcocks »The Man who knew too much« ablaufen. 1956 hatte der Grossmeister

It is by no means the children alone who hang wide-eyed and open-mouthed on the bearded old men’s every word: The latter are singularly adept at captivating the grown-ups too. Enveloped in the twilight fragrances of the »African orient« and transported to another plane by the flickering lights, the jugglers and conjurers, the hypnotic movements of the tale-tellers and snake charmers, I sleep-walk my way to the long line of silver-fitted green carriages that substitute for taxis in the old town during the hours of darkness. One such contraption, aided and abetted by the fresh night air, transports me back to a more familiar, reassuring plane at La Mamounia. Well, nearly: Even as the echoing staccato of hoofs on asphalt gradually dies away, more than a vestige of the otherworldly aura lingers on… Thoughts of a nightcap confront me with a tricky decision: The garden terrace? Or a cool live jazz band in the Churchill Bar? I plump for a cozy corner seat on the terrace, where I am served an excellent drink by an even more excellent waiter, immaculately attired in white, gold-trimmed Mamounia dress that is manifestly made to measure. My mind’s eye involuntarily relives scenes from Hitchcock’s »The Man Who Knew Too Much«: In 1956, the master of suspense treated protagonists James Stewart and Doris Day to

Since the start of the 1990s, when the jet set invaded Marrakech in search of a snug little piedà-terre, more than 20,000 traditional riads – as often as not on the verge of dereliction, one has to admit – are said to have been snapped up by Europeans, restored and given a new lease of life as hotels, residences or private palaces. While some complain of a cultural sell-out, others point to the then seemingly inexorable decline of an old town no one could otherwise have afforded to preserve and restore. Yves St. Laurent is still regarded as the pioneer of this trend, though his domicile Majorelle, for all its famous garden, is now only one of many. These days, newly acquired properties are upgraded ever more lavishly, occasionally changing hands between their primarily French, British, German and Swiss owners for astronomical sums of money. At first glance, nothing obvious seems to have changed much in the old town over the past 30 years; fittingly so, perhaps, as the riad tradition is given to concealing its inner beauty behind an inconspicuous façade. Notwithstanding, both Europe’s bohemian contingent and the beatniks who came to Marrakech in the 1960s, seeking to live out the anti-ideals of existentialism (or what they took for it), would today feel c c m a g # 2 / 2 01 5

Aber auch wenn sich auf den ersten Blick die Altstadt in den letzten 30 Jahren gar nicht so augenfällig verändert hat – zu den Eigenschaften eines Riads gehört es auch, die innere Pracht durch eine unauffällige Fassade zu verbergen – der europäischen Bohème, oder den Beatniks, die im Marrakesch der Sechziger Jahre ihren Existenzialismus oder was sie dafür hielten, zu leben versuchte, wäre die »Rote Stadt« mittlerweile ebenso fremd wie den Hippies jener Tage, da der Slogan galt: Haschisch für alle. Manchen war das nicht genug. Dem rebellischen William Burroughs wären in den 50ern Tanger und Marrakesch fast zum Verhängnis geworden. Aus der Distanz des Besuchers und mit grosser Sympathie schreibt Elias Canetti 1968 sein Buch »Die Stimmen von Marrakesch«.

Essaouira – Stadt des Windes Über einen tadellosen Highway gelangt man in zwei Stunden ans Meer. Die Fahrt geht durch eine karge Landschaft, nur wenige Orte liegen an der Strecke und einige tausend endemischer Arganbäume, aus deren Nüssen in kleinen Manufakturen das kostbare Arganöl gewonnen wird. Ziegen sind bis in die Wipfel fast kahlgefressener Bäume geklettert, um auch noch das letzte Grün zu erhaschen. Zielort ist Essaouira, die Stadt des Windes an der Atlantikküste, Fluchtpunkt der Jugend aus Marrakesch, um an den Wochenenden des Hochsommers die dumpfe Hitze der Stadt gegen die frische Brise an den endlosen Stränden der Atlantikküste einzutauschen. Touristisch ist die Stadt ein Juwel: Schneeweiss erstrahlt die Medina schon von weitem, in den schmalen Gassen der Kasbah locken Händler in malerischen Nischen mit allem, was sich an marokkanischer Handwerkskunst vermarkten lässt. Cafés, rauchende Stände mit allem, was die Schatzkammer des Meeres aufzubieten hat, und alles geht in heiterer Gelassenheit vonstatten. Vom Sehnsuchtsort der Hippies in den Sechzigern ist nicht mehr viel zu spüren, doch noch immer wird an Legenden gestrickt, in denen Jimmy Hendrix immer die Hauptrolle spielt.

In den kühlen Morgenstunden empfielt sich auch ein Ausflug ins nahe Atlasgebirge, von Marrakesch aus nur eine knappe Stunde entfernt. Es muss nicht gleich dessen höchster Gipfel, der Jebel Toubkal sein, der auf einer Höhe von 4’167 Metern im ewigen Eis verharrt. Ein Grosswesir soll es zu märchenhaftem Reichtum gebracht haben, den er einigen hohen Beamten der französischen Verwaltung verdankte, drückten diese doch bei seinen zweifelhaften Geschäften beide Augen zu, wofür er sie im Gegenzug immer wieder mit jungen Mädchen und auch Knaben aus den nahen Berberdörfern versorgte. Noch lange danach hatte Marrakesch mit dem sündigen Image zu kämpfen. Mittlerweile ermöglichen strenge Gesetze auch schon mal die öffentliche Verhaftung eines (einfluss-)reichen Nabobs vom Golf.

In the 1950s, the rebellious William Burroughs nearly met his end in Tangiers and Marrakech. With the detachment of the visitor, and with deep affection, Elias Canetti captures this turbulent period in his 1968 book »The Voices of Marrakesh«.

Essaouira – the »wind city« A flawless highway gets you to the sea in two hours. The journey crosses a barren landscape interrupted only by a handful of towns and villages and a few thousand endemic argan trees, from whose nuts small factories extract precious argan oil. In trees they have nearly stripped bare, goats climb as high up as the crown to nibble away the last few bits of edible greenery. I am headed for Essaouira on the Atlantic coast, the summer weekend getaway for young people fleeing the close heat of Marrakech and eager for the fresh breeze and endless beaches of what has become known as »wind city«. For tourists, the city is a treasure trove: The medina gleams a snowy white even from a distance. In the narrow alleys of the kasbah, traders in quaint alcoves woo passers-by with anything and everything that Moroccan crafts can get to market. Cafés rub shoulders with smoke-filled stands boasting all the delicacies of the deep; the atmosphere is jovial and relaxed. Though little is left of the »hippie mecca« of the 1960s, story-tellers are still working and reworking fables and legends in which Jimi Hendrix always plays the lead role. A trip out to the nearby Atlas range, barely an hour from Marrakech, is a good idea in the cool of the morning. It doesn’t have to be Toubkal, the highest peak which, at 4,167 meters, never sheds its icy mantle. Singularly impressive clay architecture unquestionably makes Benhaddou one of the most fascinating Berber villages. With the towers and houses threatening to collapse at any moment, however, craftsmen

and builders are racing against time to restore this unique heritage. It is here, incidentally, that Orson Welles filmed »Sodom and Gomorrah« in the 1950s. Whispered references to the two biblical dens of iniquity will undoubtedly have done the rounds among many of the good citizens of Marrakech during the days of the French protectorate from 1912 to 1956. One grand vizier is said to have obtained fabulous riches from a number of high-ranking French administrative officials: As long as they turned a blind eye to his shady business dealings, he was happy to keep them well stocked with a regular supply of young girls and even boys from the nearby Berber villages. It took Marrakech a long time to shake off this sinful image. Nowadays, strict laws can even lead to the public arrest of a rich (and influential) nabob from the Gulf. c c m a g # 2 / 2 01 5

Palais Namaskar – inmitten eines Märchens aus Scheherazade Auf dem erneuten Weg in die noble Palmeraie wechseln sich Asphaltstrasse und Schotterpiste ab. Nach einer halben Stunde erreicht der eben noch auf Hochglanz polierte Range Rover des Hotels nun mächtig eingestaubt die weitläufige Anlage des Palais Namaskar, die äusserlich und in ihrer Abgeschiedenheit auf den ersten Blick fast an eine Karawanserei in der Wüste erinnert, wären da nicht die üppig blühenden Bougainvilleas, welche die Einfahrt säumen. Bis zur Rezeption im Stil eines privaten Salons ist noch alles ganz unspektakulär. Dann aber steht man staunend inmitten eines Märchens aus der Scheherazade, oder ist es der Palast eines indischen Moguls, oder doch eher eines maurischen Prinzen im Andalusien des 15. Jahrhunderts? Leuchtend grüne Bambus- und Papyrusbüsche auf kleinen Inseln inmitten oder am Rand unzähliger Wasserbecken leiten über zu ornamental verspielten

exuberance of the bougainvilleas lining the driveway, the outward appearance and general isolation of the location would, at first glance, resemble a caravanserai in the desert. Until you reach the reception, arranged like a private salon, everything is fairly unspectacular. Then, without warning, you are suddenly standing in the middle of a tale from Scheherazade. green bamboo trees and papyrus plants set on islands in the middle and around the edges of countless pools blend perfectly with playfully ornamental arched constructions in gleaming white. Some of the latter serve as the building façade while others simply disappear into infinity; still others merely demarcate the terraces of the guest facilities that range in size from villas to veritable palaces, complete with heated pools, open fireplaces, generously dimensioned kitchens and – of course – the services of a cook and butler. While the alignment of the rooms follows the principles of Feng Shui, the fittings and furnishings are decidedly cool and very state-of-the-art. Stone-gray blinds underscore the laid-back elegance. Brown beanbag chairs are an excellent way to lounge in front of the generously dimensioned flat-screen TVs. A voluminous Bang & Olufsen system churns out concert-hall sound quality. Other eye-catching elements include a rosewood bureau, a mini-

bar made of mirror mosaics and chrome, huge baths along the entire outer wall of the suite, a double shower cabin with enough room for a whole family and a back entrance to the delightful garden. Heavy doors with bronze fittings pay tribute to Morocco’s artisanal crafts, in sharp contrast to the modern lightness of the interior. Narrow footpaths lead past part of the wellkept lawn of the golf course, over stone slabs set in the endless reservoir, alongside the elaborate arcades and on to the vast spa oasis. Behind the walls of a grandiose building crowned by a golden dome that glitters and glows in the sunlight, one might expect to find a mosque. Instead, the massive gate swings open on a gourmet restaurant whose outdoor area traces the contour of a sizeable swimming pool as far as the No Mad Bar.

Auch für so erfolgsgewohnte Architekten und Designer wie Nicolas P apamiltiades und Fabrice Bourg muss es für einen Moment wie in einem orientalischen Märchen gewesen sein, als die Wünsche eines leibhaftigen Königs an sie herangetragen wurden. Im Herzen von Marrakesch schufen sie auf dreieinhalb Hektar eine meditative Oase der Ruhe und Transzendenz, in unverfälschter marokkanischer Tradition und in wahrhaft königlicher Noblesse. «Ich bin Epikureer auf die subtilste Weise«, lässt Robert Musil in seinem »Mann ohne Eigenschaften« einen seiner Protagonisten gestehen. Für einen echten Epikureer ist kaum ein Ort besser geeignet, seine Bedürfnisse auszuleben als Marrakesch; auf die subtilsten Jünger dieser Philosophie wartet innerhalb der 12 Kilometer langen Stadtmauer das Royal

LE ROYAL MANSOUR – der schlüssel zu epikureischen Weihen Dahinter Stille, summende Käfer in den Blüten, leises Murmeln der sich durch die ganze Anlage ziehenden Wasserläufe, schattenspendende schmale Gassen zwischen den Riads in landestypischer Ockerfarbe. Man kann sich in der 3,5 Hektar umfassenden Medina des Royal Mansour schnell verlaufen. Äusserlich sehen die meist hinter Palmen verborgenen Riads mit ihren massiven, grünen Eingangstüren und dem geschnitzten Erker alle gleich aus. Innen un-

terscheiden sie sich vor allem nach der Anzahl der Wohn- und Schlafräume, die sich über drei Etagen verteilen. Diskrete Fassaden nach aussen, wie üblich bei Herrenhäusern des Maghreb, innen luxuriös und behaglich. Das reicht als Beschreibung nicht aus, aber allein die Aufzählung der verwendeten Materialien von der Seidentapete im Living Room bis zu den Hölzern der stilechten Möbel würden den Rahmen sprengen; gar nicht zu reden von den überwältigend schönen Mosaiken in perfekter Zellij-Technik, die nicht nur den Patio im Erdgeschoss, von wo der Blick nach oben bis zum offenen Himmel reicht, schmücken. Unter den 1’000 Künstlern und Handwerkern, die für die Realisierung der königlichen Pläne aus allen Landesteilen zusammengesucht wurden, befanden sich die besten unter den selten gewordenen Meistern der TadelaktTechnik, deren Friese und Bordüren an Decken und Wänden sich durch alle Räume ziehen. In dieser Weltgegend spielt sich das familiäre Leben zumindest in den warmen Monaten häufig auf den Dächern der Häuser ab. Dem tragen

auch die Riads im Royal Mansour Rechnung. Unter einer Markise als Sonnenschutz verbirgt sich eine bequeme Lounge auf dem Dach, mit offenem Kamin für die kühlen Monate und einem Plunge Pool für heisse Sommertage, an denen der Weg zum Swimmingpool im Garten zu lang wird. Durch halbhohe Mauern ist der Sichtschutz weitgehend gewahrt, aber hierzulande gilt es ohnehin als ungezogen, sich für das Geschehen auf Nachbardächern zu interessieren. Im Patio auf der unteren Ebene, von feinsten blau-goldenen Kachelmosaiken umgeben, lässt sich der Afternoon Tea oder die köstliche marokkanische Variante mit Bündeln frischer Minze geniessen, umgeben von dem entspannenden leisen Geräusch fliessenden Wassers. Yet even they must, for a fleeting moment, have felt they were part of an oriental fable when a real, live king laid out his wishes before them. LE ROYAL MANSOUR – GATEWAY TO EPICUREAN DELIGHTS Save for the buzz of insects on flowers in bloom and the gentle murmur of the watercourses that criss-cross the entire complex, the world behind the gate is blissfully silent. The typically ochre riads themselves are separated one from the other by pleasantly shady alleyways. It is quite possible to lose your way in this »medina within the medina«. From the outside, the riads with their solid green doors and engraved bays – mostly hidden away behind palm trees in any case – all look the same. Inside, the number of living spaces and bedrooms spread across the three floors is the main difference. Discrete façades concealing cozy interior luxury: thus the time-honored custom for Maghrebian mansions and manors. Merely listing the materials – from the silk wallpapers in the living room to the fine timbers used in the original-style furnishings – would take up far too much space and not even scratch the surface of a fitting description. An open fireplace is also there for the cooler season, as is a plunge pool for those scorching summer days when even strolling to the swimming pool in the garden is too much like hard work. Half-height walls afford a measure of privacy. In these climes, taking an interest on what is going on on neighboring roofs is in any case still very much frowned upon. Afternoon tea – or the delicious Moroccan variety brewed from bundles of fresh mint – is best taken on the downstairs patio, surrounded by the most elaborate blue-and-gold tile mosaics, the serenity underpinned by the relaxing sound of running water. Service is at its best when you don’t notice it – a principle the Royal Mansour takes very literally. Behind the small office on every floor, a door reserved for butlers and housekeepers goes behind the scenes. The hotel’s ministering spirits can approach the riads unseen; and they only ever appear in guests’ private rooms when explicitly summoned to do so by a bell or by telephone – a deferential nod to guests’ right to unrestricted privacy, a right heeded all too seldom even in many luxury hotels. Whenever the guest is »at home« in the riad, the staff are backstage and on standby.

Among the 1,000 artists and craftsmen requisitioned from the farthest reaches of the kingdom to realize the royal plans, the very best of the now-rare tadelakt masters also came, their freezes and edge trimmings now adorning the ceilings and walls in every room.

Open to the skies, the hall is at once a scintillating jewel and the signature icon of the Mansour. Its walls and pillars are covered with mosaics that form artistic ornaments and arabesques from millions of tiny fragments. In the past, such beauty, art and opulence would have been surpassed – if at all, which is unlikely – only in royal palaces. The centerpiece of the hall is a set of ponds arranged in an elaborate geometric sequence, lined on every side by stylish antiques and rare works of artistic crafts.

At least in the warmer months, family life in this part of the world often takes place on the roof of the house – a fact not overlooked in the design of the Royal Mansour’s riads. A canopy

A HARD DAY'S NIGHT OUTSIDE THE MEDINA Neither the El-Badi palace, the Saadian tombs nor Yves St. Laurent’s Jardin Majorelle figured on the itinerary this time around. The days are too short in Marrakech and the nights too long; there is so much to get through. Naomi Campbell, Mick Jagger, Madonna and Isabelle Adjani have all owned homes in Marrakech. Yet while celebrities from around the globe have endowed the city with a glittering, pulsating nightlife, it is still the locals who call the tune, at least in the off-season. The masculine half of the Red City’s jeunesse dorée is not averse to rolling up in canary-yellow Lamborghinis or modest gray Ferraris, naturally escorted by models sporting miniskirts and designer high heels. Yet their epigones too would doubtless be more than willing to have their picture taken in their relentless orbit around international celebrities. Bill Clinton has been seen here, as has Angelina Jolie with Brad Pitt, and Richard Gere too. Megastars such as Elton John have turned Marrakech’s night into day – a feat that is not all that difficult for patrons of the most frequented discos: The likes of the Pascha and Tresor often don’t even open their doors until two in the morning. The starting point for a night on the town, however, is almost always dinner at one of the really »in« restaurants. Giorgio Armani and Tom Cruise are among those who have immortalized themselves at La Trattoria. An absolute must is Le Comptoir Darna, a pulsating split-level restaurant and bar with dimmed-down lighting, Moroccan musicians on the steps in the early evening and excellent belly dance shows as the night wears on.
