Show Time for the World’s Best

SUPERYACHTS WORDS BY REBECCA WHITLOCKE

In the nautical world, yacht shows unlock the potential to think strategically and almost e veryone agrees that today more than ever, the superyacht sector needs as much help as it can get. Now into its 29th edition, Monaco Yacht Show has redefined the norm by uniting key players employed in the yachting industry and opening up new markets so exhibitors can help customers relish the simple pleasures of yachting. The show is unique in the sense that each year 125 of the world’s finest vessels are displayed, 40 or so of those unveiled are world premieres.

YACHT CHARTER WORDS BY REBECCA WHITLOCKE

While most of us are content with earthly pleasures, some are looking to the ocean for memorable experiences. The personal touch given with yacht charters means clients are opting to arrive by sea rather than land, in search of unforgettable destinations to drop anchor.

Is chartering a yacht elitist? It’s certainly regarded as opulent; however, media focuses attention on 50m+ yachts and lesser on the sub 50m boats. There’s an aura of pertinence that the industry creates a breath of fresh air – to ignite a passion for yachting lifestyle, excite customers to discover destinations afar and forge opportunities. Doors can be opened for the next generation of clients to charter or purchase, with there being over 9000 yachts available to charter globally in the 25 to 50m size bracket. As a result, the charter market can be reimagined whereby Monaco Yacht Show’s influence for anyone hoping to discover the world of yacht charters means it’s the place to be for unrivalled attention to detail and authentic luxury, regardless of vessel size.

As a man who knows what he wants, Tracy Maitland invested his 14 years of experience as a superyacht owner into creating one of Benetti’s best Crystal 140: the 38.1-metre superyacht Skyler. MISSION WORDS BY LAURA ROSE NICHOLLS

The highly anticipated addition to the growing Tankoa fleet was never going to be a solo mission. The 72-metre superyacht Solo was born after her experienced owner sought the help of an expert team, some of whom have continued to follow him around the world on board this superyacht powerhouse. This important synergy between the owner and his team helped move Solo off the drawing board onto the water.

While on a dive accompanied by © Rodolphe Holler

Lady E’s knowledgeable crew, guests will learn about the marine life they are encountering beneath the surface and learn about the environment. For instance, one of the biggest enemies of the coral in Thailand, where Lady E has recently begun cruising, is Crown-of-Thorns starfish, which eats hard corals. Studies have shown that one starfish can decimate up to six square metres of living coral reef per year. That’s not to say yachts are left off the hook when it comes to protecting reefs. Mr Niphon Phongsuwan of the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources based in Phuket, runs the Thailand chapter of Green Fins, an organisation which encourages divers, snor kelers and yachtsmen to take care of the reefs while they are out enjoying nature. He has been working since 2001 to fund and help find therapeutic solutions for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a condition that afflicted his son Paul, who passed away in 2016 at the age of 21. In this interview, Luc talks about the success of Only Watch, advances in the fight against Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and his vision for the future.

What is the key to your success?

100% of fundraising is paid for research. Explain to us your method. LP: Only Watch’s organization costs never exceed 1%, and this balance is often paid by sponsors. The pitch to watchmakers and partners is straight forward: If you agree to participate in Only Watch, it means no fees, commissions, or costs paid by the charity, a full commitment in the search for excel lence, and no signed contracts. It’s like the old days when a person’s word and their altruistic attitudes were enough. And that approach works to this day.

How do you prepare for the future? What is your vision and goals for Only Watch? LP: Only Watch is both strong and fragile. Since there are no signed contracts, there’s no obligation to be part of it. So, after each event I must be the first one “possessed” with new energy, which encou rages our participants and partners to continue their involvement with enthusiasm. For instance, in 2017, I proposed that the watchmakers, in addition to the unique watches they offered, linked their cultural heritage with a unique experience. Half of them followed up on this idea and offered dinners in magical venues, VIP invitations to a spin in a vintage Formula One car, fashion shows, art festivals, yacht shows, charity galas and film festivals. These unfor gettable experiences events bring new energy to the event and attract more participants.

MONACO YACHT SUMMIT Who you gonna call?

For three years, the Monaco Yacht Summit has been connecting potential yacht owners, charterers and their advisors with industry experts to discuss different aspects of superyachting in a relaxed and informal setting. This September a selection of panellists will deliver new topics on the routes to ownership, building and charter at the Summit, but let’s go back to one of the discussions that raised the widest interest and curiosity from the audience last year: Superyacht Myth-Busting! Charlie Birkett, Dirk De Jong, Richard Lambert and Charles Dence* were our myth-busters at the 2018 edition.

- MYTH 1 You require a Broker if buying or building a yacht? Representing the brokerage corner, Richard Lambert outlined his point of view that brokers can play a useful role in helping clients select and undertake a yacht purchase or new construction project. Richard qualified his response by highlighting what he believed the role of a ‘good broker’ entails and the key traits that clients should look for when choosing who to help guide them. Top of his list was that brokers should

58

MYS SUMMER MAGAZINE – ISSUE 2019

deliver clients comprehensive market intelligence including recent trends and specific opportunities, as well as detailed knowledge of the individual yachts and the context surrounding them. Second was the importance of brokers having an established network and reputation with key industry players such as clients, shipyards, captains, crew and other service providers.

Dirk De Jong echoed Richard’s senti ment: “a good broker supports clients in narrowing down options and becoming confident to take a particular course of action, whether the purchase of an existing yacht or choosing the new build route”. Speaking from a shipyard point of view, Dirk also highlighted that “a broker can be helpful to guide clients and their teams as to what is realistic or achievable, as well as to manage client

expectations for requests that might be a step too far.“

- MYTH 2 Building a yacht costs US$1 million a metre? “This is a myth” stated Dirk. He went on to explain that there are too many variables involved in the construction of a new yacht for this often mentioned ‘rule’ to be realistic. Dirk clarified further by pointing out that the length of the yacht itself is not the only useful dimension. The width, height and therefore overall volume will also have an impact on the pricing of a project. More importantly inputs such as raw materials, labour, technical specifica tion, exterior and interior design, build quality and the standard of fit-out and finishes can significantly alter the overall cost of a new build. Charlie Birkett confirmed Dirk’s view and added that “there maybe a ‘sweet spot’ where a price per metre calculation appears to match the length and overall cost of a new build project, however this does not prove the rule. As the superyacht sector is dealing with the construction of yachts from around 30m in length to well over 100m, any perceived direct relationship between the build price and length of a yacht very quickly becomes disconnected”.

- MYTH 3 Yachts cost 10% of their value to operate? “This is also a myth” stated Charlie from a yacht management perspective, ad ding “there are multiple factors that will influence the creation of an annual

MONACO YACHT SUMMIT 24 SEPTEMBER 2019 Since 2016, the annual Monaco Yacht Summit seeks to inform and educate yachting clients in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Attended by pre-qualified individuals, their representatives, family offices and private investors, the Summit includes a series of informative panel discussions with expertise drawn from across the superyacht industry. Organised by the Monaco Yacht Show on the eve of the show itself, the Summit is now in its fourth year and has established itself as a key event for end-user clients and their advisors looking to enter or understand better the world of yachting. udget and affect the actual running b costs in practice”. The delegates heard that the value of a yacht is not really a useful starting point from which to base running cost calculations. Value can vary significant ly depending on the size, age, build quality, maintenance history, overall condition and also the circumstances in which the yacht was purchased. Wider market trends are also likely to have an impact on the value of a yacht. Charlie explained that “crew costs are generally the largest component of an annual budget”. Further influences include the number of seasons, itine rary, whether the yacht is available for

charter and the owners preference for level of service. Richard pointed out that there will be a difference in operational costs between routine maintenance and a yacht that requires a more thorough refit. Similarly, any necessary repairs will naturally impact annual expenditure. Charlie summarised by stating that “although the ‘10% rule’ is not so helpful in practice, there is enough collective experience of operating yachts over the longer term across the industry to accurately calculate annual running costs for an individual yacht.”

MYS SUMMER MAGAZINE – ISSUE 2019

59

“Value can vary significantly depending on the size, age, build quality, maintenance history, overall condition and also the circumstances in which the yacht was purchased.“

- MYTH 4 Charter yachts make a profit? From a charter perspective, Richard explained “in general terms some yachts may generate more charter income than annual expenditure in a given year. How ever if looked at over the longer term once maintenance and refits such as repainting a yacht are factored in, this will likely eat into revenue.”

In line with the Monaco Yacht Summit objectives to provide a series of infor mative and educational discussions for the future generation of charterers and owners, the panel of experts is drawn from superyacht brokerage, operational management and yacht construction backgrounds.

He also mentioned that the ability of a yacht to generate charter revenue will also depend on the Owners motivation to put charter usage above their own use in terms of availability and bookings. Therefore his advice to clients is to consider that “a best case scenario” is for a yacht to cover annual running costs with charter activity.

* Richard Lambert (Head of Sales, B urgess),

Charlie further clarified that “although making a yacht available for charter might cover costs, it is unlikely to include the generation of significant income to offset the capital expenditure of the yacht purchase itself”.

There is no shortage of international boat shows, but there is only one Monaco Yacht Show. PORTO MONTENEGRO Previously a historic naval base, Porto Monte negro’s reincarnation as the Mediterranean’s leading luxury yacht homeport and marina village has made it the fastest selling development in the region. With 450 berths, the marina is complemented by 7 luxury, private residences, the five-star Regent Hotel & Residences, and numerous sports and leisure facilities. The village attracts a vibrant year-round international crowd, with an events scene that extends to exclusive parties, cocktail evenings, leisure activities and social soirées, iconic shows and concerts in the Synchro events and performance space, along with conferences, exhibitions and cultural events. Accompanied by a busy retail village hosting designer boutiques and global fashion brands, there’s also a waterfront promenade of restaurants, cafés and bars. Not forgetting the Porto Montenegro Yacht Club, which features an iconic 64m infinity pool, and offers a generous selection of sporting and sailing facilities alongside an innovative Beach and adjacent Beach Gym.  portomontenegro.com

PORTS OF/DE TOULON The Ports of Toulon have been improving their services for the yachting sector these last years. The Port Authority’s on-going program of refurbishment of deep-water berths for vessels with LOA up to 300 m attracts new shipyards, suppliers and service suppliers for superyachts. In 2019, the 7th yard of Monaco Marine was launched. The berths located in the southern side of the bay were made ISPS-compliant which has enabled new customers to find the new amenities of Ports of Toulon. This program will move forward in 2019-2020 with new more qualitative berths. In addition to this, wintering and easy refuelling are some of the key assets of Toulon Bay.  ports-tpm.fr

MONACO YACHT SHOW Set in the iconic Port Hercules in the principality of Monaco, the Monaco Yacht Show represents the pinnacle of luxury. Each year, the MYS curates the exhibition of 125+ extraordinary one-off superyachts built by the world’s most respected shipyards and welcomes leaders from the yachting industry. In September, the yachting industry turns its focus exclusively to the MYS where forty or so new launches are annually unveiled in a worldwide debut. 580 exhibiting companies and partners participate in the growing success of the MYS. Monaco provides the ultimate showcase for industry influencers from the most reputable superyacht builders, award winning yacht designers, luxury suppliers, influential brokerage houses to the most sought-after water toys, prestige cars, helicopter and private jet manufacturers. The MYS is the premiere luxury event worldwide where visitors can discover the greatest aspects of superyachting against the glamorous back drop of Monaco. Since 1991, the MYS has gratefully benefitted from the recognition and the support of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco.
