MONACO YACHT SHOW The Managing Director’s Letter Experience. It would be tempting to believe that this was just a personal affair, defined by what each person feels or has learned from practical experience. But – whatever you do, whoever you are – you grow up with other people. And this applies equally to the new superyacht clientele: this is the wealthy millennium generation, the forty-year-olds who now prefer to share extraordinary and unforgettable experiences with their family and friends. They are never alone: this is the epicurean generation that loves and shares, that “likes” and clicks on hearts (page 20). A clientele composed of neophytes whose varied lifestyles foreground the quest for immediate, out-of-the-ordinary emotions. Yachting offers these experiences along with the ultimate in luxury. High-tech on-board s ystems, luxury tenders and nautical leisure accessories are now the deciding factors in the choice of a yacht to hire and are presented in our dossier on the Tenders & Toys exhibition launched two years ago (pages 82, 88). These multimillionaires have not necessarily been steeped in the yachting culture that generally comes from a family background, and they will rely on the expert advice of yacht brokers when they hire a boat for their next vacation or plan the construction of their future floating palace (page 26). On the eve of the 28th Monaco Yacht Show they can also attend the 3rd Monaco Yacht Summit which is specifically designed to present them with the keys to superyachting (page 50). By definition experience also means knowledge acquired by practice. The building of a superyacht is a real challenge in which the experience of all the crafts involved is the guarantee of a truly superb result. A 70m yacht represents 500,000 hours of work: research, technological development, naval engineering and craftsmanship. On page 52, we present a foretaste of some of the forty superyachts launched this year, the jewels of the fleet of 120 superyachts that will be unveiled in Monaco in September. On September 26th, future charterers and owners will meet with leading yachting experts and visit the finest luxury vessels – a prelude to their first experience of the superyachting lifestyle.

STAIR CASE by Frances and Michael Howorth

to SUPERYACHT Ownership

The pathway to owning a large superyacht has often been described as a staircase or a ladder. Each rung or step, is an a dvancement on the last as a yacht gets traded in or sold to make way for another larger and grander yacht.

ostly, yacht owners start at the bottom of the ladder and climb up moving through owning production yachts towards the eventual goal of overseeing their own custom build. Some owners are lucky enough to jump onto the ladder in the middle having pur chased superyachts on the brokerage market, but generally very few get to the top in one quick leap. Yet that is exactly what the owner of Atomic did! It was not until she walked down the dock and saw the yacht gift wrapped in a huge red ribbon complete with bow did she realise she was the proud owner of a 45-metre superyacht. Sunrise Yachts built Atomic during 2014 at Antalya in Turkey at the behest of the lady’s

loving husband. Working hand in glove with the shipyard and a very accommodating Captain, the owner secretly created the ultimate birthday gift for his wife who never suspected a thing. It is said that the husband concealed his visits to the shipyard as business trips and his phone calls to the Captain where made on trips to the supermarket. His wife later remarked that she was puzzled at the time as to why so much milk was being drunk in her household and why her husband so frequently volunteered to go out to buy more down at the local grocery store. It later transpired, that was the only way he could speak to his Captain and learn of the yachts build progress.

Not all superyacht owners are that lucky, and the question for many would be owners is how do you even begin to contemplate superyacht ownership and how do you find the right ladder to climb. For many, boat ownership is something inherited in childhood. Small children grow up enjoying the boating business on a yacht owned by their parents. The holiday on board and play with the yachts water toys and the die is cast. One day they too will own their own yacht and in turn will take their own children on holidays afloat. Owners find their way to the ladder in various ways. Some have been dinghy sailors while others have gone fishing off the beach in a rib. Other owners admit to walking the docks in the marinas of the Cote d’Azure

and being struck with boat envy after seeing others enjoy using their craft in the warm Mediterranean waters. Others have no idea they are even interested in boats when the sudden desire to own one hits them. We know of one owner who was very much in love with the idea of owning very fast motorcars. When that passion pushed him towards the Grand Prix circuit he was doing fine until he encountered the Monaco Grand Prix. There he admits to being blown away the moment he stepped on board his very first superyacht which was being used at the time as a viewing and hospitality platform during the practises and the race itself. It was while he was standing on the aft deck sipping champagne that he was introduced to a well-known

yacht broker based in the principality who during the conversation let slip that he was acting for the owner of the very yacht they were standing on. By the time the motor racing was finished there was some negotiations and within a month the motor racing aficionado had become a superyacht owner and remains one to this very day. The bug that infects those who have a desire to own a yacht can take a quick and dramatic effect as happened during the Grand Prix but in other owners the condition can take longer to become apparent. We know of one family who were serial charter guests choosing a different yacht each holiday and enjoying a different cruising location

each time. After some years of doing this they started to repeat charter with the same Captain even though he moved from yacht to yacht. The family found they liked his style of yacht management and chose to follow him when he changed yachts. As the family grew and the Patriarch became more successful in business so the frequency of chartering grew alongside it. One evening sitting on deck of a 50-metre yacht with an after-dinner digestive in hand, the Captain said he would be moving away from this yacht now that her owner had put her on the market. That remark set off a chain reaction, which ended up with the charter guests buying the yacht and retaining the services of their favourite Captain. As a team

they are still together even though the latest yacht is 80 metres. With the family expanding as offspring marry and grand children become a focus the yacht gets used more and more and is proving to be a much more savvy investment then the continual use of charter yachts. Perhaps one of the best ways to get a foot onto a rung in the ladder is to visit the Monaco Yacht Show. We have visited the show each year for the last 19 of its 28-year existence and find it a fascinating place to see

yachts and meet people in the industry. At last year’s show, we met a gentleman who confessed to being confused and bewildered by so may elements of the superyacht industry. Having profitably sold his successful business he was in the market for a very much larger yacht than his production motorboat of 19 metres and he had come to the show to get a new perspective on what the market offered. As we talked with him we realised how well suited the show is to people

who want to know more about buying and owning a superyacht. Here potential owners can walk the docks and view craft of every shape size and use potential. It was while talking to him that he used the words to describe the show as a staircase to superyacht ownership. We thought at the time that could be a great title for a magazine article and we will be back at this year’s show seeking more inspiration. See you there! u

How do we attract a new wave of superyacht owners? All eyes are on emerging UHNWIs, and the yachting industry is busy engaging with the priorities of millennials in the hope they will take to the water like the previous generation did.

T

he European owner of 49-metre M/Y Aurora, which p remiered at last year’s Monaco Yacht Show, is Rossinavi’s youngest client to date. In his early 30s, he wanted a yacht that represented his millennial mindset: fast performance, dynamic design and a flexible layout. Prompted by the growing number of young UHNWIs, last year the Italian shipyard partnered with the International University of Monaco (IUM) to research the likes and dislikes of the emerging millennial market. “We’ve been looking at millennials to understand how they spend their

leisure time and how that transfers to the yachting lifestyle,” says Federico Rossi, COO of the family-run ship yard. “For a full-custom builder like us, it’s a fascinating market that goes beyond the bare statistics to emerge from our research.” Technology, innovation and the environment were just some of the priorities to emerge from the s tudy, which Rossinavi factored into a series of superyacht concepts specifically aimed at younger owners. One of these concepts, the Mark 48, was created by David J. Weiss, a young American designer who took inspi-

ration from the design language of science fiction and—more specifica lly—the futuristic flying suit worn by Ironman in the Marvel movies. “It stands to reason that younger owners are going to appreciate adventure and sports more than mahogany and cigars,” says David. “It’s a question of priorities, and luxurious comfort is less important to them than owning something new and surprising.” For wealthy, self-made millennials still growing their business interests, yachting is an occasional pastime rather than an enduring passion.

Hotlab is the Milan-based design studio behind the innovative s tyling of the new Arcadia Sherpa XL, a pocket superyacht aimed at entry- level owners. With a client portfolio that includes at least three owners aged under 40, studio partner Antonio Romano points out that for all of them a yacht is only part of their fast-moving lifestyles. “They don’t think of a yacht as an end in itself, but as a sort of floating piedà-terre for attending events like the Monaco Grand Prix or the Cannes Film Festival,” says Antonio. “They’re not interested in huge cabins, but they are into water sports and lots of exterior space for entertaining large groups of friends. They might spend a weekend on board in Sardinia, go back to work, and then join the boat the following weekend in Ibiza. It’s a different concept from the traditional two-week cruise in the summer.”

With the focus on open-air socialising, water sports, gyms and spas, formal dining rooms and salons— already something of an anachronism on yachts—will be even less relevant in the future. This shift in how yachts are used is driving designers to look afresh at conventional general arrangements. The 82m Pentagramma concept by Luca Vallebona, another young Italian designer, is an illustration of this reappraisal in action. Instead of putting the helipad on the foredeck, which features a full-beam pool instead, the heli-ops have been relocated to the sundeck. Guests can disembark from the helicopter and be ushered into the semi-covered ‘loggia’ a half-deck below, from where they can also access the gym and sauna on the bridge deck. Another unusual solution is the stairway leading directly from the

lower deck guest accommodation to the main deck beach club. It means guests can step out of their cabins and can go straight outside without having to first reconnoitre corridors and lifts—in fact, the lowrise Pentagramma has been designed without elevators with younger clients in mind. “There’s a lot of talk about blurring the barrier between exterior and interior on yachts,” says Luca. “In most cases, this usually just means putting in bigger windows or sliding glass doors, but that’s only half the battle: you also have to provide better circulation flow between the inside and outside on different deck levels.” But there is a risk involved in designing yachts for a specific demographic. Defining what distinguishes one generation from another is not an exact science and grouping millennials into a single homogenous group is unlikely to result in solutions that suit everyone.

This much became clear at the Superyacht Design Symposium organised by Boat International earlier this year during a debate among millennials whose p arents own large yachts. Sebastien V ibe-Petersen, who co-owns the 54m Perini Navi sailing yacht Parsifal III with his father, maintained that hybrid propulsion is essential for attracting younger owners. But Alex Gibbs, whose family owned the Sunseeker Predator 115 Elysium, believes that lithium ion batteries are a stopgap technology and argued for “a bigger push in all industries towards a better solution.” Another generalisation is that millennials value life experiences more than material possessions. They will still want the use of super yachts, but will be less interested in owning the asset. In fact, they may even see ownership as a restriction.

The 6,450 nm Falcon 8X has the quietest cabin of any business jet. That means more comfort and greater productivity on long, demanding journeys. Add to that uninterrupted connectivity and access to virtually any two points on the globe, and you have a business jet that exceeds expectations. Fly farther. Achieve more.

“We are going to see a time when the traditional idea of yacht ownership starts to follow the same path as car-sharing services: more convenient than a traditional taxi, and a real alternative to owning a car,” says Erwin Bamps, CEO of Dubai-based Gulf Craft. “There are huge challenges ahead, but also huge opportunities for those companies that find the right balance in the evolving market.” Fractional ownership is not a new concept, but has enjoyed only limited success in the yachting world. Penny Hammond-Smith, a business development consultant based in Monaco, worked with Rossinavi to coordinate the IUM’s research project as part of its course in luxury management. She warns against over- emphasising the ‘sharing’ b ehaviour of Millennials. “Sure, they’re going to do things differently and we will have to re-package the product, but I don’t believe the yachts will change that much and I don’t see the ownership concept going away anytime soon,” says Penny. “Eventually they will want their own product like the rest of us. Things change, but human nature stays the same.” ‘Re-packaging’ the product further involves how the industry commu-

nicates and interacts with the emerging market. In the past, owners were typically introduced to designers or shipyards at boat shows or via yacht brokers. Today, first contact is more often made directly through social media channels. “It’s a much more immediate and personal form of communication, for them and us,” says Hotlab’s Antonio Romano. “From our point of view, seeing their photos on Facebook means we can get a pretty good idea of their interests and tastes before we even meet them. It makes understanding their needs or preferences that much quicker and easier.” Social media and messaging apps are also affecting the way yacht brokers do business with owners. David Seal is a broker with Northrop & Johnson and an active vlogger. Most of his business leads, especially amongst younger clients, come from his YouTube channel. “Just the other day I was thinking I don’t get as many emails as I used to,” says David. “But then I realised I have more and more clients who contact me through direct messaging on Facebook or with Whatsapp—and they expect an immediate response.” The average age of superyacht owners is decreasing, but whether

millennials will fill the generation gap remains to be seen. Merijn de Waard is the founder and director of the Superyacht Company, which has complied a database of more than 4,800 yachts over 30 metres in length. Research is ongoing, but his records show that self-made owners under the age of 40 make up only a tiny fraction of the total. “This is not surprising when you think that they’re still busy with their businesses and owning a superyacht is not yet a priority,” says Merijn. “The important thing is that they charter yachts, and the industry has to be very clear about what it costs to run a yacht. In some cases, you can buy a large yacht relatively cheaply, but the running and maintenance costs over a period of five years can be much higher than the initial purchase price.” The charter sector is strong and getting stronger, which suggests that prospective owners appreciate the yachting lifestyle and are checking out the market, possibly as a preamble to buying. In the meantime, it’s worth remembering that in 1988 when Donald Trump acquired 86-metre Nabila and renamed her Trump Princess, he was just 42 years old. u

THE ANATOMY OF A

by Risa Merl

YACHT BROKER Let us settle this debate once and for all. What exactly does a yacht broker add to your chartering or yacht buying e xperience?

MYS SUMMER MAGAZ I NE • I SSUE 201 8 2 7

There are some out there who might question or underestimate the value of working with a yacht b roker. After all, anytime you part with money it can be tempting to try to cut costs. But we also know that cutting costs often means cutting corners, which only costs you more money in the long run. A yacht broker should possess a particular set of skills and qualities that will make them indispensable to their client during the yacht buying or chartering experience. Here’s just a few of the traits to look for in your ideal broker: Knows lots about yachts Most yacht brokers get into the field because they are highly passionate about yachts. They either grew up sailing, worked on yachts as crew themselves or both. While previous experience working on yachts isn’t mandatory to being a world-class broker, it can certainly give them an edge in understanding the inner workings of crew, yacht design and an owner’s preferences.

Captain and crew whisperer During a yacht charter, brokers work behind the scenes as the intermediary between captain and crew to ensure every detail of the trip meets your exacting requirements. If there is a particular request – or any concert arise during the trip – a quality broker is the one to make sure everything goes smoothly.

Travel guide A broker will have a good understanding of the cruising grounds where their clients want to go. They should be able to give you basic details and hidden secrets about the most popular destinations. Beyond this, they will present ideas for new itineraries that are off the beaten path or suggest places to try in shoulder seasons, where you can enjoy wonderful places but save money before the crowd rush in. Seaworthy A broker won’t just be there on the business end, they can either personally accompany you – or set you up with the right people – to attend the yacht’s sea trials and surveys to make sure that everything is in order. Your broker will delve deep into the technical muck that is a survey so you don’t have to, renegotiating

2 8 M Y S S U M M ER M AGA ZINE • ISSU E 2 018

do your deal making means that the yacht’s owners are paid 50 per cent on the first day of the charter and the remaining 50 per cent at the end of the charter. This gives the broker room to negotiate on your behalf if the charter is not up to snuff.

the deal if necessary. They are your eyes, ears and sea legs for the entire affair. Value added Brokers will also give you itinerary and logistical advice on where to start or end your itinerary that can help you save money on VAT (value added tax). Starting or ending your trip in different ports can make a big impact on reducing VAT, which will affect the overall price of the charter. Legal eagles There are many steps involved in buying a yacht, and many rules involved in chartering that differ wildly by country and cruising grounds. Your yacht brokers stay up to date on this legalese so you don’t have to, making everything as simple as possible so your only job is to enjoy your time on board. Yacht tailors A charter or sales broker makes it their job to get to understand their client’s unique tastes and preferences. This allows a broker to tailor

their advice to their client’s specific preferences and personal needs, finding them the right yacht to charter or buy. It’s a skill a website simply cannot replicate. Honest opinions When it comes to chartering, you’d never have the time to scope out every yacht you might want to charter in person – and you’d never want to make such a big decision based on photos on the internet alone. This is where a skilled broker whose honest opinion you can trust comes into play. Charter brokers travel to yacht shows all over the world, go on board all the latest yachts for charter, get to know the captains and crew and sample the chef’s cooking. They do all this so they can give their client’s their objective, honest opinion and quickly find you the right boat, every time. Deal maker Part of a broker’s job is to negotiate the best rate for their charter client. In a “direct” situation, without a third party to do this, it isn’t nearly as easy. Likewise, having a broker

Network advantage When you work with a sales broker, you aren’t just tapping into this one person’s knowledge, but you are gaining access to their vast network. Sales brokers will be plugged in with contacts in the top shipyards, the best designers as well as other brokers, so whether you are designing a new build or buying a preowned yacht, they can find you the perfect team and ensure you get the best deal. Likewise, if you’re instead buying a marina slip as an investment, a sales broker can help you find the ideal location for your yacht. Market pro Just like you wouldn’t try to buy or sell a home without a local realtor who knows the area and the comparable prices, you wouldn’t buy or sell a yacht without an expert broker who knows the state of the industry. Superyacht sales brokers have a deep understanding of market values, pricing and trends, and they utilise this knowledge to help their clients set the right price and get the best deals. Worst case scenario saviour At the end of the day a yacht is moving object filled with many other moving parts, and as much we try to avoid it, sometimes things do go wrong. A broker who is calm under pressure and proactive at solving problems is invaluable if unfortunate situations do occur. They deal with the headaches while you keep enjoying your holiday. u

OWNERSHIP THROUGH THE EYES OF SERKAN BORANCILI By Gemma Fottles

Purchasing his first superyacht, the 30.9m Azimut Goga Migoga, in 2010 upon the launch of his digital marketplace business which was later sold to eBay, Turkish entrepreneur Serkan Borancili has spent the past eight years living out his yachting dreams. Selling Goga Migoga after a couple of years of learning exactly what he wants out of his next superyacht, it was in 2013 that Borancili set eyes on Alumercia. The 37.7m Heesen-built yacht was ideal, he says, but

with a good refit project, she would be perfect - and substantially more valuable. 100 days later, Borancili and his family were cruising the waters of the Mediterranean in perfect style. Selling Alumercia in January this year following her exhibition of the 2016 Monaco Yacht Show, now, he’s looking for something bigger and better than ever before... and has some words of a dvice for those in the same game.

MYS SUMMER MAGAZ I NE • I SSUE 201 8 3 3

“Disruption is in every industry, and that is what drives innovation and change (…). We want more sophisticated yachts than ever, and to do that, we need younger owners with fresh ideas.”

Gemma Fottles: Was 30m the most suitable size for your first superyacht? Serkan Borancili: I’ve always been connected with yachting - my father actually built six Turkish gulets in the early 90s. I also worked on our yachts in the summer time while we were chartering them. 30 metres is usually not a starting point for yachting as people tend to go smaller first, but for me, it was the right decision. After cruising with Goga Migoga for two years, I realised that a planning yacht would not allow me to do all the things I wanted to do with the yacht. Yacht ownership requires a steep learning curve. But learning from Goga Migoga, I made a deep dive into the world of displacement yachts and started exploring!

The refit of Alumercia was an interesting project, taking just 100 days to complete. Was it an enjoyable process? I was looking for a displacement yacht for over a year before I finally saw Alumercia on display at the 2013 Monaco Yacht Show. I met Marnix Hoekstra - Creative Director at Vripack, who designed Alumercia. I told him my thoughts for a refit. He said if I could get the refit done to a high standard, the value of Alumercia would soar. I agreed, and we started the project together following the purchase soon after. It was a very stressful but incredibly enjoyable journey. There were more than 50 men working on her day and night. We were seeing progress right before our eyes, like a time lapse movie! In our case, the stars

were aligned. I studied architecture myself, my captain is a very experienced guy in refit projects, and we had Vripack on our side. It can be a much more intense refit process, so we were lucky. What are the benefits of owning a yacht in terms of spending quality time with family? You see so many places together and you don’t pack! Everybody is kind of captured on board for that small p eriod of time, in a good way. You eat together, you talk together, you visit beautiful places together. It’s priceless. I’ve woken up in the middle of the night on the yacht before, and found my family still on the bridge, excited for the next day and making plans. It’s fantastic to be so connected.

34 M Y S S U M M ER M AGA ZINE • ISSU E 2 018

What are some of the most special cruising moments you have experienced on board? I have many great memories. Cruising into Venice was special. Everybody was on the sun deck and we were all excited and sharing photos - what a day! Crossing the Corinth canal also was impressive. When I told my mom that it was a man-made canal from the 1800s, she actually started crying she was so amazed. Oh and of course, I have some memories from partying and cruising on the Messina Passage... It was an incredible night! Are you currently in search of a yacht? Yes, I’m looking for a bigger yacht in the 40-50 metre range. When you can get more family and friends on board, the joy of yachting only increases. As the yacht goes bigger it also becomes more stable and more spacious. Everyone can have more privacy and the most important part is, you can spend more time on board without ever wanting to get off! What advice do you have for first time buyers? I always look for pedigree, layout and capabilities! But it’s all about your ‘program’. What do you want to do? How much time can you spend on board in a year, and where do you want to cruise? Do you want to charter? Stay in the Med, head to the fjords? These answers determine what you really want in your next yacht, and should be at the forefront of anybody’s decision making process. What makes you go for a brokerage yacht over a new build project? New builds are always exciting and it’s definitely in my future plans. Building from scratch takes a minimum of 3 years and if you’re not experienced in yachting… well, I wouldn’t dare do it without expe-

rience. Brokerage is much better in terms of getting experience in the yachting world, and of course for your budget. There is a lot of talk regarding the younger generation steering away from yachting. What do you think? I have lot to say on this. Disruption is in every industry, and that is what drives innovation and change. We see disruptors in the car industry, communication sectors, accommodation, transportation everywhere. So why not yachting? We want more sophisticated yachts than ever, and to do that, we need younger owners with fresh ideas. I mean, you wouldn’t expect them to build yachts similar to those being built 20 years ago: we need more eco-friendly yachts, more unique designs, and vessels with improved capabilities. The younger genera tion can deliver that and should be encouraged to do so. We first met you at the Monaco Yacht Show, where Alumercia was on display. What is the significance of the Monaco Yacht Show to you? Let’s be honest: Monaco and the Monaco Yacht Show is the sacred land for yachting by all means. If you’re selling/buying a yacht above 35 metres, your destination is the Monaco Yacht Show. There’s no doubt. I found my yacht there and also sold my yacht there. This small country is so m agical for the yacht owners, and I believe this relationship will continue for many decades. u

PATRICK PRUNIAUX, CEO OF

ULYSSE NARDIN The motto of this venerable watchmaking business founded in Switzerland over 170 years ago is: “The captain’s brand”. And the new captain of this brand is a young “officer” who has always set a steady course towards lifestyle solutions. Let’s set sail with him …

P

atrick Pruniaux is only 45 but his career would fill the lives of many people, with three different professions, all pursued with the same passion. From France where he began his studies (MBA at HEC Paris) to the USA (graduate of Stanford Business School), Africa, the UK, Ireland and of course Switzerland where he is based today, he has had to cross several oceans, sail the seven seas and surf over many lakes to reach Ulysse Nardin, an almost inevitable port of call for an athlete and sailor who has always been fascinated by watchmaking. And yet this is not the field in which he began his career. His first job was the result of a chance meeting in a train on the way to London just after the end of his military service. So, it was almost – but perhaps not entirely – by chance that at the age of 25 the young graduate joined the Diageo group (Guinness) and set out

for Africa and an extraordinary professional and human adventure that was to last three years. A wonderful start for this born globe-trotter with his gift for command and human relations. A switch to marketing for the same company in the USA (Chicago) was an interesting change but no doubt offered less scope. An adventurer always lurking behind the manager So, it was only natural that he should be tempted by the siren-song of a headhunter and join the Wine & Spirits division of the LVMH group, in Miami. It was a logical move: “The group itself was attractive and the brands (including Moët & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot and Hennessy) even more so,” he explains. “And South America was really tempting.” The adventurer was always lurking behind the manager. And the young head of this new market quickly became the managing director. He was of course

very much in his element: complex brand management in a market ripe for conquest, an enormous variety of people and situations to cope with, not to mention the crisis of 2001 and the difficult economic environment. Patrick Pruniaux had plenty on his plate – the sort of situation he revels in. Linking his passion for luxury watchmaking with his interest in sport by becoming International Export Manager for Tag Heuer was an almost obvious next step. But he didn’t make the move straight away, taking time out first to obtain a European MBA: it’s always better to be well prepared! He occupied several functions in the Swiss firm, notably International Export Manager in 2005and VP Sales between 2010 and 2014, in charge of growth, retail optimization, and client experience and innovation. He was also a member of the executive committee of LVMH Watches and Jewelry and was responsible for coordinating

sales strategy between the different watch and jewelry brands in the group. The Sirens were more and more interested in this leader and his accomplished track record, and he heeded the “Appeal of Apple”. “A legendary company! Its ability to switch from one world to another first of all, its size, its expertise, its challenges (launch of the Apple Watch): everything was sensational. I love radical changes: I was spoilt, in both the general and specific senses, during those three exceptional years.” He has now been with Ulysse Nardin for a year. No need for a telescope for a backward gaze: he prefers to look for new horizons. Why did he choose this mythical firm? “Its real potential for development, the possibility of w orking with a new team … I was won over right from the start,” he says. “Ulysse Nardin

An Odyssee without borders is a company that breeds enthusiasm,” he adds. And when it comes to enthusiasm he himself shows the way. “I had hardly started in the new job when I came to the Monaco Yacht Show, with which we are a partner. Our two worlds are in perfect harmony. Ulysse Nardin feeds on its history and is keen to show that it was and remains the favorite brand for sailors on account of its accuracy, backed up in particular by decades of partnership with the world’s greatest navies, including the US Navy. Yachting is the modern expression of these demanding standards, ones that we share.”

Ulysse Nardin is part of the worldwide luxury group Kering, with its roll-call of names that are legends in the fields of fashion, leather goods, jewelry and watchmaking: Gucci, Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen, Brioni, Christopher Kane, Tomas Maier, Boucheron, Pomellato, Dodo, Qeelin, Girard-Perregaux, ... and its new CEO is already in osmosis, placing creation at the heart of his strategy. “In the coming months one of our existing collections will be completely updated,” he concludes. In time for the next Monaco Yacht Show? u

Together for a sustainable Ocean Presided by H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco, the second Monte-Carlo Gala for the Global Ocean will take place on Wednesday September 26th 2018 – on the opening day of the Monaco Yacht Show – in the presence of international artists and philanthropists committed for the protection of the Ocean, today particularly threatened by human activity.

his exclusive event is organised by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and Mr Milutin Gatsby, Global Fundraising Chairman, with the support of the Monaco Yacht Show, the Oceanographic Institute, Yacht Club de Monaco, Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer and the Monaco Private Label, in order to support the Foundation’s m arine conservation initiatives. On the program of this prestigious evening on the Terraces of the Opera of Monaco: red carpet, cocktail reception, dinner prepared by a Michelin-star Chef and performances by international artists. An exceptional auction will punctuate the Monte-Carlo Gala, filled with once-in-a-lifetime experiences, collectibles and memorabilia, and a selection of fine art from some of the world’s most important artists. The Monte-Carlo Gala aims at meeting the challenge of a sustainable Ocean, for the next generations and for our Planet’s future. This year again, proceeds from the auction will support the Foundation’s initiatives dedicated to a sustainable Ocean: the development of marine protected areas, the protection of threatened marine species, the mitigation of the impact of climate change and acidification on the Ocean, the promotion of innovation and the fight against plastic pollution. Many international artists supported the inaugural Monte-Carlo Gala, which took place in September 2017: Leonardo DiCaprio, Adrien Brody, Goldie Hawn, Andy Garcia, Eva Longoria, Madonna, Joe Pesci, Martin Scorsese, Tobey Maguire, Nelly Furtado, Enric Sala, Robin Thicke, Lior Suchard and Olga Kurlyenko.

Help save an Ocean under pressure… Playing a key role in climate regulation, the Ocean represents more than 70 % of the planet’s surface, producing 50 % of the oxygen we breathe and absorbing 25 % of the carbon dioxide released in the atmosphere. Yet, overfishing and illegal fishing, the temperature rise and the increasing pollutions jeopardize its balance. The first edition of the Monte-Carlo Gala for the Global Ocean enabled the Foundation to raise 14 m illion USD to provide a multi-annual support to its marine conservation projects worldwide, through 8 priority programs. Fighting against plastic pollution Plastic pollution is indeed one of the biggest environmental challenges for our future. With its partners, the Foundation has taken action in order to change production and consumption patterns, through the “Beyond Plastic Med” task force, which has just launched its second call to micro-initiatives leading to supporting 25 projects in 12 different countries.   Developing the Mediterranean Trust Fund for Marine Protected Areas Developing Marine Protected Areas is another important field of action of the Foundation, not only to preserve marine ecosystems but also to contribute to their valorization by assuring the sustainable economic development of local communities. Between 2017 and 2018 the Foundation gave its support to 15 different projects, from the Mediterranean to Mozambia, Cambodia and the Antarctic Ross Sea.

Conserving marine species facing a risk of extinction Marine Protected Areas are home of endangered species whom conservation is another priority of the Foundation. By maintaining its partnership with the WWF Greece on the island of Gyaros, the Foundation strengthens its commitment for the preservation of the monk seal. A project has been launched to study the genetics of the animal. Blue fin tuna is an emblematic successful action of the Foundation who worked to prevent its ecological extinction. Now time has come to assure a transition to a strategy of restoring to a strategy of sustainable management in the long term. Expanding marine protected areas in the Polar Regions The Poles are the first areas to bear witness to global warming. The Foundation has decided to act on several fronts to gain a better understanding and try to curb this major upheaval that is particularly notable in the Polar Regions. The rise in temperature makes the Arctic more accessible for economic activities but also more vulnerable to its negative impacts. As part of its educational programmes, the Foundation continues to support “Students On Ice” an initiative that offers students the opportunity to take part in an educational expedition in the Arctic to come into contact with the realities of this region. Mitigating ocean’s acidification Every day, over one quarter of the CO2 released by human activities is absorbed by the oceans, thereby reducing the amount of this gas in the atmosphere. However, increasing emissions of carbon dioxide leads to

warming the water and reducing its pH: the oceans are becoming more acidic. This phenomenon intensifies insidiously, and its effects are increasingly being felt by marine biodiversity. Over time, acidification could have disastrous effects on the entire marine e cosystem, with direct repercussions on humanity from the point of view of the economy and health. Aware of the threats facing the future of humanity and our oceans, the Foundation represents the views of scientists and NGOs at the highest political level. Supporting Innovations to challenge marine threats The Foundation encourages the development of new technologies to help protect the environment. One particular case is the project organised jointly with the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP): the WCRP FPA2 Polar Challenge.

A prize will be awarded to the first team to complete the challenge of sailing for more than 2,000 km under sea ice, in the Arctic or Antarctic, in an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) such as an “underwater glider”, f ollowing a given route and performing regular temperature and salinity observations between the surface and depths of up to 1,000 m. The Foundation helps support the Argo International network (involving 35 countries), which currently operates a global array of almost 4,000 free-drifting profiling floats, robots in all the oceans measuring the temperature and salinity of the upper 2,000 m of the oceans. These data are used in real time by operational centres that forecast sea conditions and make it possible to calculate the ocean’s capacity for storing heat and to understand the climate. As a new project, the Foundation, in collaboration with the Oxford

Martin School, will implement a satellite-based surveillance study that will examine the response of a high seas tuna fishery, and the behaviour of this fishery in response to observation. This study is a breakthrough in fishing monitoring while also g enerating an important reflexion on the gaps in the jurisdiction of high seas (representing 55% of our globe’s surface). u

MONACO YACHT

SHOW SEPTEMBER 26TH - 29TH, 2018

For the last 28 years, the Principality of Monaco has hosted the world’s largest international superyacht meeting in its emblematic Port Hercules. In September, the Monaco Yacht Show will again welcome private owners and future purchasers or charterers of yachts who can discover the 120 superyachts displayed in the water.

A

mong the 2018 collection of luxury yachts, 40 brandnew models will be unveiled by leading shipyards, as is the case every year. While the final decision to exhibit a yacht always remains with the owners, their agents and representatives work closely with the organisers of the show to offer the finest showcase of superyachts available for sale or purchase.

“The Monaco Yacht Show has a world wide reputation for the exceptional quality of the collection of superyachts on d isplay each year, averaging close to 50 metres overall. About 50% of the yachts exhibited are less than two years old,” explains Gaëlle Tallarida, General Manager of the Show, b efore stressing that “We work in coordination with participating yacht brokers and shipyards in the interest first and foremost of the individual visitor,

whether owner or future client. And to help new clients who come to discover yachting, the MYS has a duty to offer them the best possible experience, with the supreme quality of the yachts on display, whether on the quays or in the water, as one of the leading criteria.” A tailor-made program of visits is specially reserved for private super yacht clients invited by MYS exhibitors and organisers. Experience offers exclusive services enabling guests to make the most of the show and take their first steps in the confidential world of luxury yachting. In particular, the program includes participation in the 3rd edition of the Monaco Yacht Summit and an invitation to the Opening Ceremony of the 28th Monaco Yacht Show (see inserts). Optimised distribution of exhibition areas The MYS exhibition will extend once again over almost the whole of the Port Hercules and will also benefit from the restructuring by the Principality of Monaco of the Quai des États-Unis, giving priority to the presence of naval architects, shipyards and brokers on the quays right next to their yachts on display in the water. Visitors will also find a new line of superyachts at right-angles to the Quai des États-Unis, replacing the former floating pontoon connected to the Central T. The reorganisation of the display in the water is backed up by a new thematic orientation of the various exhibition zones, as ever with the aim of making the experience of future yacht buyers even more enjoyable.

THE MYS ART PAVILION

“The 580 exhibitors present in Monaco cover the whole range of specialties required to build a yacht from A to Z.”

A NEW EXHIBITION AT THE MONACO YACHT SHOW In September visitors to the show will discover a brand-new space dedicated to art in the MYS. Adjacent to the Starboard exhibition lounge and the Car Deck on the Quai Antoine Ier, the Art Pavilion will present a collection of works of art and sculptures. Collectors and art fans can meet ten gallery owners and their artists who will come to present their works. Art Pavilion - Quai Antoine Ier Free access for all MYS participants on presentation of a valid badge. 10 a.m. – 6.30 p.m.

Future owners – accompanied by their captains – or their representatives are more and more closely involved in the building of their yachts, and they can visit the exhibition tents to look for the latest in hi-tech equipment (Darse Sud) or the objects and furnishings presented by prestige luxury goods firms and craftsmen (Parvis Piscine). The Quai Jarlan will host part of the display of luxury tenders, since the Tenders & Toys zone launched in 2017 and devoted to yacht tenders and nautical leisure accessories will occupy more space on the Quai Antoine Ier. The Car Deck, an exhibition of a selection of prestige vehicles, and the Starboard, a Lounge and exhibition area housing the Art Pavilion, a brand-new space in the Show devoted to art (see insert), complete the theme of the superyachting lifestyle on Quai Antoine Ier.

Inaugurated at last year’s MYS, the Starboard is the show’s new lounge bar where visitors can meet for lunch or simply benefit from a m oment of relaxation during the day, with pastries and refreshments. The news kiosk in the lounge offers visitors free access to the main yachting and lifestyle magazines that are MYS partners. The modern styling of the Starboard, created by French interior designer Roche Bobois, blends perfectly with the superyacht lifestyle environment of the MYS on Quai Antoine Ier with the prestige automobile presen tations on the Car Deck, the luxury tenders and nautical leisure acces-

ome Eastern European fairytales teach kids that the most important thing in a dish is salt. Literally, it means something relatively small that makes a huge difference. That is so true for the water toys aboard a superyacht. Regardless of what is the size and specifications of the mothership, owners and guests tend to spend most of their time at anchor. Guests want to have fun and now tend to spend more time in beach clubs near the water instead of staying at sundeck. This is when the garage become the big player. Tenders are the key element of superb holidays on board a superyacht. Even more, they are lifestyle changers. They help get to secluded harbors thanks to the shallow draft, ride from the super yacht to the port and back with speed and in style, and even receive a pure splash of emotions by pressing the accelerator and going full speed

ahead of the wind. And, most importantly, they mirror the strong personality of the owner. “I strongly disagree with the industry that looks at a tender only as a technical part of a superyacht”, comments Carlo Nuvolari of the renowned Venetian design studio Nuvolari Lenard that is responsible for iconic projects like the 106m Black Pearl or the 82m Alfa Nero. “Yachts get bigger and many of them can’t fit in harbors and have to stay outside far away in the sea at anchor. In this case, a stylish, c ustom-made tender with the same family feeling as the main boat is the perfect way for an owner to show off. The focus shifted on great tenders around 10 years ago and it keeps growing. That is why tenders are crucial now.” Currently one of the main trends of the superyacht industry is the production of explorer vessels. Architecture of those yachts is

eveloped around the extensive use d of toys and tenders. Philippe Briand – leader in true explorer yacht design, one of the most awarded d esigners ever, refers: “For us this term does not cover the essence of the nature of those tenders, submarines, cars and so on. We are talking about equipment creating the possibility to go over sea, into the deepest oceans, through the dunes. They are all expedition gears. As architects of the “mother” vessel, we are always very involved in the logistics, launch, carry and recovery of what are toys, with a long work process behind this argument. Owners may have different priorities like diving, fi shing, swimming, exploration, sports. As the result, the tenders are specialized and customized because the requirements are so special: open, limousine, hard bottom, fast, submarine, etc.” The Monaco Yacht Show introduced a dedicated area for the tenders and toys last year. The market of these

products is currently highly competitive – in terms of both players and models. It keeps climbing in parallel with the superyacht market. “Today owners have a huge selection of tenders to choose from, it’s as big now as the automotive industry”, underlines the great Tommaso Spadolini, who celebrates his 40th anniversary as a yacht designer this year. Every year more than a thousand of tenders of various types hit the w ater and so do a number of new innovative toys. Some custom tenders’ price may reach five million euro (source: Superyacht Report, Tender issue 2017). The estimated cumulative size of this business is over a couple of billions of euro a year. Launched for the first time in 2017, the new zone, located on Quai Antoine Ier, featured many exciting exhibitors both on the land and in the water. Thanks to the new

extended Tenders & Toys zone, the Monaco Yacht Show is now offering a complete superyacht lifestyle environment in an ultra-luxury spot. There are already over two dozens of confirmed participants and the number will certainly increase during the summer and closer to the event. “It was our response to the yachting industry’s goal to attract a new, younger, superyacht clientele”, said Managing Director of the MYS Gaëlle Tallarida. “Entertainment is one of the leading criteria in the selection of a yacht to buy or charter with the new generation of superyacht enthusiasts”.

Indeed, tenders are not just a fun extension of the main superyacht. They give younger clientele a chance to enter the much-desired super yacht niche. The presented toys were equally stunning. Among them innovative paddle-boards, private submarines, helicopters, an electric surfboard, the very first autonomous diving drone and a flying car (MYS 2017). Toys give the opportunity to do some sports outside that’s why you can also find exciting sports equipment as the latest minimalistic design canoe. u

ast chase-boats, latest sport tenders, full carbon e-bikes, inflatables and even a remotely operated underwater vessel are among the top water accessories that will make the tender exhibition at Quai Jarlan and the dedicated Tenders & Toys area “must visit playgrounds” of the Monaco Yacht Show 2018. High-end water toys have always been part of the MYS and it stresses out the importance of this complementary exhibition aside the large yachts on display.

One of the Quai Jarlan stars will be the innovative Turkish boutique brand Mazu Yachts. After the company’s sales record during last 2017 MYS – the yard will premier the “muscular” Mazu 52 Hard Top - built in carbon composite with a top speed of 37 knots. The highlights of the dedicated Tenders & Toys area are obviously limo tenders that attract current and future superyacht owners. This fast cruising tender is customized to match the mothership’s exterior styling, its tones

This provides stability and an unmatched sea worthiness due to the foils that function as shock absorbers. On the other hand, Naumatec will show its new creation, the E-Tender 460, the very first full electric boat for the Italian brand. The tender has a 20hp engine and up to 4-hour range in the economic mode. In addition, the Swedish company XShore will unveil its eElectric 8000 open boat that mixes classical and contemporary Scandinavian design. For their very first participation, the Italian boatbuilder Cranchi will unveil the new E26 Classic model, project developed with the designer Christian Grande. The E26 can be a large yacht tender and also a versatile solution for day cruising. Of course, boats are important, but they are not the only attractive point of the MYS 2018 – Tenders & Toys area as it features the largest possible array of water toys that every superyacht owner dreams of in one luxurious place. HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco “With the money raised together with Only Watch in the past decade, we have changed the face of research on this matter. […] We are getting closer to changing the lives of thousands of children, teenagers and young adults around the world. We might not all be researchers, but I think we all have collectively the power to change things for generations to come. I am very honoured and happy to have supported this project since the beginning, as I know many of you have, and I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart.” Luc Pettavino, Founder/Organizer of Only Watch “All together we have won many battles: The battle of altruism and empathy The battle of beauty and research of excellence The battle of awareness for research on Duchenne muscular dystrophy Now, let’s continue pushing hard, and win the battle to cure this disease.” John Reardon, international head of Christie’s watch department “Only Watch is not about one person, one auction house, one brand or even one industry. MONACO YACHT SHOW The Monaco Yacht Show is the world leader event in superyachting. Set in September in the iconic Port Hercules, the MYS represents the pinnacle of the superyacht lifestyle against the glamorous backdrop of Monaco since 1991. Every year, the world’s most respected shipyards display 120 extraordinary one-off superyachts and megayachts, of which 40 new launches are annually unveiled in a worldwide debut. For four days, yacht owners, future superyacht purchasers or charterers, decision- makers in the yachting and luxury industries attend the Monaco Yacht Show to participate in one of the most influential business networks on Earth. On docks, the MYS curates the showcase of a selection of 580 leading companies in the industry: from the most reputable superyacht builders and nautical suppliers, top yacht designers, luxury manufactures and the best brokerage houses to the most sought- after tenders and water toys, prestige cars, helicopter and private jet manufacturers. The Monaco Yacht Show is an event by Informa and gratefully benefits from the recognition and the support of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco.
