JOY TO THE WHIRL ’Tis the season for gifting, and a new set of wheels for yourself isn’t a bad present at all. To help you along are our review pages this month: there’s the jolly Mazda 2 cover car, the cheap and good Geely MK, the go-anywheredo-anything Land Rover Freelander 2, the versatile Volvo V70 and the capable MercedesBenz C-Class in two flavours, either plain vanilla C180 (yum) or triple chocolate C350 (yummy!). We also offer an Earthquake in the form of a 600bhp Cayenne Turbo mod job (page 58), which should satisfy those with a huge hunger for power. If your need for speed is more prosaic, do check out the other mod job (page 66) in this issue, a ‘Van-borghini Doblo’ with the works. Also check out Alan Smithee’s entertaining exposé of the misguided hiring practices in local car companies (page 30) and Yang Quan Fa’s delightfully defensive piece on driving during Christmas (page 28). And in the spirit of giving, our In Gear section (page 54) highlights a couple of nice gift ideas to make your Christmas even merrier. Last but not least, read our Tech-Know take (page 50) on the sixth NUS racecar being built for next year’s Formula SAE international competition. The driven Mechanical Engineering undergrads putting the vehicle together are Singapore’s Adrian Neweys and Patrick Heads, and we should encourage and celebrate their endeavour.

A Singaporean F1 driver, foreign talent or otherwise, is still a pipe dream, but Singaporeans working as F1 team engineers are perfectly plausible. On a more sombre note, the local motoring mag industry recently lost a compatriot. Jacqueline Lim, one-time editor of Torque who had a passion for automotive writing and fast Japanese cars, passed away from a rare chronic illness. Read Lynn Tan’s heartfelt tribute (page 32) to this special friend of ours. If life is just a highway, then each of us is just a car. And we never motor alone, thanks to friends and family driving alongside or riding shotgun on this long road trip known as life. But every once in a while, because of circumstances beyond his or her control, a beloved co-driver has to take the filter lane and make a permanent pit stop. Jacq, goodbye and godspeed, our memories of you shall remain in our rear view mirror forever.

ROAD BLOG I read somewhere, online of course, that one new weblog launches into cyberspace every second. This equates to a whopping 3600 brand-new blogs per hour or more than 80,000 new blogs per day. Stubborn detractors call it a fad growing nowhere fast, but the fact remains that the World Wide Web is the today and tomorrow of modern media, be it local, regional or international. Analogue is so yesterday, digital is the future. Carma has a token website, I know, but frankly it’s running on empty, with about as much enthusiasm and expert advice about cars as a two-bit JB workshop nestled among coconut trees. Why don’t the Carma team just blog instead? Not only the editors and writers, which would be predictable, but also the ‘pit crew’ like the designers and salespeople. Bring netizens behind the scenes of your magazine production, take us beyond the plain printed word, throw in your coolest unpublished pictures, share your thoughts/dreams/nightmares in the world of cars, and do it all Singapore-style. In other words, complain till the cows come home, always be angsty and watch what you blog about the PAP ‘garment’! Gary Wang

SEE THE LIGHT Singapore has some of the world’s most userfriendly roads, highways and byways. Singapore also has the world’s most efficient and enlightened traffic management systems, even though they can be quite authoritarian at times. Thankfully, I’m one of the lucky motorists still safe from the tyranny of rush hour expressway ERP, ha. Anyway, I want to say that our roads are at best half as smooth-flowing as they should be, simply because daydreaming drivers take too long to clear traffic junctions. Green is go, so just go! Step on it! Stop wasting my precious time on the road! If these stupid drivers want to daydream when they are driving, they are welcome to do so, but far away from my car please, preferably at another junction on the other side of the island. NO VAN FOR THIS MAN I was happily flipping through the October issue of Carma, indulging in all the juicy bits about the happenings in the local scene as well as the insightful and wellpenned car reviews, when I chanced upon something out of the ordinary. A review of the Volkswagen Caddy, a commercial vehicle! What in the world is a van doing in my favourite car magazine?! No doubt it comes equipped with a great gearbox and all, but this still doesn’t warrant a two-pager. With reference to the title, I’d rather that this ‘Cad’ be kept in the bag. Nonetheless, a great effort from the creative team at Carma. It’s looking better and better with every issue. Do keep up the good work, you have yourself an earnest fan here.

My first car was an Elantra in 1995 and I’ve been faithful to the Hyundai brand ever since. Not only because I like their honest-to-goodness designs, but also because my first proper job after polytechnic was with Lucky Goldstar! I’ve changed jobs and cars several times since then, but my ride has always been a trusty Hyundai, with my current one being the Avante. It’s my favourite by far, thanks to its Japanese-like quality and Continental-like driving behaviour. Now for my happy problem. I was promoted recently and my new salary allows me to upgrade my ride, but I’m torn between the sunroofed Santa Fe and the Azera. Can you help me break the deadlock? Marcus Pang

K IS OK My dad runs a watch shop in town and we travel to Japan once or twice a year to meet his suppliers there. Every time we’re there, I notice the massive popularity of Japanese k-cars, which I think are perfect for Singapore. Small, practical, affordable, fuel-efficient and gentle on the environment, these sub-660cc runabouts are just the ticket for our cramped and congested city. Their cuteness is a bonus. LTA should make k-cars popular here once and for all by giving their buyers tax breaks, insurance incentives and a special discount off the prevailing Category A COE. In the meantime, I’ll stick to my Honda Jazz. Dave Koo

Well, Marcus, the Azera would be a more natural progression from the Avante, both being saloons. The seven-seater Santa Fe is more spacious and more versatile than the Azera, that’s for sure, and its 4x4 drivetrain is on standby for any off-road adventure you might partake in. The Azera is definitely smoother and more comfortable than the Santa Fe in all driving conditions, and it has a stronger aura of luxury to boot. It’s ultimately up to you to decide between the two choices, bearing in mind the Azera’s additional road tax and $9k bigger price tag. It’s a tidy sum that can buy a nice and big Samsung plasma TV complete with a home theatre system, you know.

GET CREATIVE IN THE CAR I think our homegrown Creative Technology is doing a decent job in the digital music arena, which is why I bought a Zen instead of a predictable iPod. And their Sound Blaster continues to set the pace, alongside a capable array of speaker systems and headphones. Which makes me wonder why Creative hasn’t entered the in-car entertainment segment, the last bastion of affordable audio technology still untouched by the genius of Mr Sim. I’m sure the ICE industry has enough technical challenges and potential rewards to make Creative’s foray worthwhile in the long run. Seed money won’t be a problem at all – just use some of that US$100 million Apple paid Creative to settle their legal tussle last year! Steve Wong

THE FINE ART OF CAR DESIGN D

aimler AG, in partnership with the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), recently hosted a very special workshop that focused on the unique discipline of automotive design. The history of MercedesBenz cars stretches further back in time than any car manufacturer in existence today, so the workshop is appropriately titled “Design With A Heritage”. NAFA was privileged to have the presence of Professor Peter Pfeiffer, Daimler AG’s highly experienced Vice-President of Design, during the workshop sessions and Singapore’s Education Minister Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam at the opening ceremony. The workshop provided an insight into the complex synergy of art, ergonomics, engineering and philosophy that creates a new model of a car. Among the exhibits within the confines of NAFA’s Gallery 1 and 2 were fascinating styling sketches, 1/4-scale fully finished clay models (that you wished you could take home) and one clay model that was still being shaped. Early in the

10

conception of a new car model, manufacturers build reduced-scale mock-ups from clay based on design sketches, in order to view the concept in three dimensions. To Daimler AG, the well-attended four-day event was important to showcase the Mercedes design philosophy and for Professor Pfeiffer’s team to interact with Singaporean design students, media and Mercedes owners. To the rest of us, it was a significant episode that could initiate a strong emphasis on the education of creativity and design. Daimler SEA’s president Dr Rainer Thiel is the main impetus behind this programme and he hopes that this will springboard further collaboration between the car company and the local design institutes. The world’s oldest automaker establishing a design centre in a small and young city-state sounds like a great idea.

8 WONDER A

udi’s first mid-engined supercar was launched with much fanfare last month. The R8 was unveiled to the media at the National Museum together with three Audi Racing Legends, said to have inspired the design and engineering of the advanced Audi flagship. The three racing cars – the R8 Le Mans Prototype, the Auto Union Type C grand prix car and the Rallye Quattro A2 – feature genes and DNA which have made their way into the R8 in the showroom. The Le Mans racer, for example, features the R8’s FSI engine technology, while the quattro four-wheel drive system on the road car is a direct descendant of the rally car’s. In a

rare public display, the Racing Legends together with the new supercar were driven along Orchard Road from the Marriot Hotel to the National Museum, where they were displayed for a week. Audi factory driver and ex-Toyota F1 pilot Allan McNish drove the multiple Le Manswinning R8 on the demonstration run. A crew of Audi motorsports technicians provided critical support. The Rallye Quattro was the car that changed the face of rallying in the early 80s. Without it, iconic cars like the Evo and WRX would never have been conceived. The R8 supercar for the streets was first shown as a concept called the Le

Mans quattro at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show. The production version retains the overall styling of the prototype with minimal detail changes. It features the RS4’s brilliant, high-revving V8, with the 4.2-litre unit making 420bhp and taking the R8 to 100km/h from rest in 4.6 seconds. Top speed is a mind-blowing 301km/h where permissible. Priced at just under half a million dollars in Singapore, the R8 will give Lamborghini and Ferrari a serious run for their money. All 10 R8s allocated for the local launch have been sold and more than half of the 44 units coming here next year are already spoken for.

FACELIFTED SAABS ARRIVE I

ntroduced in Singapore just a few months after its debut in Sweden, the renewed 9-3 range is said to sport 2158 improvements, with the most obvious being the striking new front end inspired by Saab’s award-winning Aero X concept car. Mechanically the cars are largely unchanged and they continue to be offered in three different bodystyles – saloon, convertible

and SportCombi, Saab-speak for station-wagon. The engine options are a turbo 2-litre in three states of tune (150bhp, 175bhp or 210bhp Aero) and a 255bhp 2.8-litre turbo V6. The V6-powered 9-3s are sold on an indent basis, with a waiting period of around three months between order placement and arrival of the car. The model year 2008 9-3s were launched by Trans Eurokars

chairman Mr Karsono Kwee and Saab Asia Pacific regional director Mr Stephen Nicholls, with the Swedish ambassador to Singapore also gracing the event.

VOLKSWAGEN TO BRIGHTEN THEIR CHRISTMAS

I

n the spirit of giving back to the local community, the German automaker will work with one selected children’s charity to fulfil the Christmas wishes of its underprivileged kids, using a special Wish Tree at Volkswagen Centre Singapore. Customers who purchase any Volkswagen car from the dealership during this holiday month will be given the opportunity to pick one child’s Christmas wish from the Wish Tree at the showroom. Volkswagen will then purchase the gift and present it to the children collectively on 21st December. The company will honour every single wish on the Wish Tree regardless of vehicle sales, so every child will ultimately have his or her wish granted under this unique project. Customers can visit Volkswagen Centre at 247 Alexandra Road or log on to www.vw.com.sg for more information about this worthwhile initiative.

he Straits Times (ST) School Pocket Money Fund helps more than 7500 schoolchildren annually by giving them monthly allowances; hence every cent of donation from individuals and corporate organisations is much needed. It is with this in mind that Eddie Loo, the Managing Director of CarTimes Automobile Pte Ltd, decided that his company will ‘adopt’ the ST School Pocket Money Fund as its sole beneficiary for its CarTimes Charity Motor Show. To raise funds, Eddie promised that $100 would be donated for every car sold during the duration of the show (9th to 11th November), and his staff will also be going around with donation boxes to appeal to the public to give generously to this worthy cause.

■ Eddie Loo, MD of CarTimes, welcoming the guests at the show’s opening.

16

To entice the throngs of showgoers that visited the show at Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza, CarTimes displayed a wide assortment of new cars, including the latest Subaru Impreza (CarTimes is an authorised Subaru dealer), Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X and Honda Civic Type R. Also taking pride of place were a selection of pre-owned cars, including a Volvo XC90, BMW 730i and Audi A6 Avant. All in all, CarTimes sold more than 50 cars over the three days, and to further sweeten the deal for these car buyers, each and every one of them walked away with a sure-win prize, and up for grabs were goodies including one 42-inch and two 32-inch LCD television sets.

Every new, car owner was also given an allnew DRIVE privilege card which entitles them to special promotions on car products and services, and discounts at select shops and vendors; some of which were present at the show. These include V-KOOL, Innovasia and Gen Concept, and in keeping with the charitable theme of the show, they willingly agreed to donate $10 for each purchase made at the show. Carma and ST701, SPH’s latest on-line classifieds which showcased their car section, were roped in by CarTimes as Official Magazine and Event Sponsor respectively, and they were joined by a host of other companies in putting on a great carnival atmosphere for the thousands of people that visited the show.

Australian Wine Index gave away Australian wine every night to two lucky winners and they also sponsored wine for the show’s opening night event called “Cars Under The Stars”. Gen Concept, an expert in the field of decals, showcased a gorgeous, customised Lamborghini, while V-KOOL presented their solar control films and Innovasia displayed their GPS latest GPS systems. Last but not least, Maybank was the Exclusive Bank Partner, and their staff was on hand to promote their attractive car financing packages and privileges.

efore I expound on how practical the new 2 is, let me just say that from a styling perspective, this new baby Mazda is my current favourite among today’s superminis. Racy and curvy, the car is designed to befriend the wind and to make air resistance its sworn enemy, especially in bodykitted R guise as tested here. Okay, I have said my piece, which I am sure will be eloquently elaborated on by my co-editors. Speaking of curvy, the new 2 dash is one of the nicest I have ever laid my eyes on. With nary an angled edge, the dashboard’s curviness clearly follows the swoopy exterior styling. The plastic surfaces may feel rather hard, but they at least look durable and their dark finish complements the rest of the cabin well. All controls are concentrated neatly in the centre section and fall within easy reach of the driver. There are no controls on the left and right of the dash, which then gradually curves forward (away from the occupants), thus creating a feeling of roominess up front. This feeling of liberated space is accentuated by

the car’s beltline, which dives down low, thereby affording an excellent front view as well as superb side and lateral visibility. That said, the rear windows are a tad small, but there is still ample glass area for looking around. Seating-wise, the new 2 is more suited to a two-plus-two adult configuration, although I must add that the competitive 933mm of rear legroom ensures that rear passengers won’t feel the least bit cramped, even on a long drive. The driver can adjust his (or her) seat forwards and rearwards by up to 250mm, upwards and downwards by up to 55mm, while the steering wheel has a tilt adjustment range of 50mm. This means that anyone, short or tall, can find a suitable driving position that gives good all-round vision and ensures easy manoeuvring of the car. Boot space, by the way, is slightly less than the previous model’s (250 litres versus 270), but the split rear seatback offers some cargocarrying versatility and the tailgate release is now electric. Other significant equipment on the high-spec R-Grade 2 include six airbags, a nifty six-disc MP3 head-unit with integral aux input, 16-inch alloy wheels with 195/45 R16 tyres (versus the V-Grade’s 185/55 R15s) and strong anti-lock brakes.

esigning a compact car has never been easy. Customers may buy an ugly big car simply because of its size, but a less-than-handsome small hatch is destined for the Hall of Failure, unless it happens to cost no more than pocket change. And because we pay so much for our cars in Singapore compared to the rest of the world, we expect our rides – whether big or small – to give us plenty more in return, from good looks and driveability to comfort and practicality. The new Mazda 2 costs a lot more than pocket change for sure, but for something just over $60k, the development team has managed to give buyers a bit of everything – a sporty and dynamic exterior, a functional and friendly interior, enjoyable driving and excellent fuel economy. For starters, the styling of Mazda’s latest Zoom-Zoom B-car embodies many design traits characteristic of the Japanese. Be it architecture, furniture, product or automotive design, the Japanese are known for their simple clean lines free from frivolous ornamentation. Think Tadao Ando, Muji and Issey Miyake and you see what I mean. Similarly for Mazda, the

outlook of the new 2 is driven by a desire for the design to form an expression of carefully-considered beauty, one that is “exquisite and dynamic” and has a global appeal. The result is an exterior that is straightforward, yet athletic and dynamic, juxtaposing sharp contours with gentle curves. The Sports Appearance Package (SAP) version we tested comes with a kit comprising front bumper, grille, side skirts and rear spoiler, creating an even sportier image. Compared to its predecessor which was more wagon-like, this third generation 2 has evolved into more of a sports compact that will appeal strongly to the newcomer’s targeted demographic of young singles and pre-family couples. The interior reflects the same design style as the exterior. It is uncluttered and clean, stylish and wellmade, with special attention devoted to the shaping of individual elements to create an impression of sportiness and spaciousness. Mazda could have inadvertently created a girl’s car, but thankfully the new 2 has turned out to be a unisex supermini with universal driving appeal.

Y

ou know those road diversions necessitated by excavations for railway tunnels? Where drivers slow down to a crawl and ‘tip-toe’ through, eventually causing a tailback for several kilometres? Yes? Well, this is not about annoying drivers. Neither is this about traffic inconveniences. This is about how one night our Mazda 2, when preyed on by a big 4.3-litre V8 luxo-sedan, shot through a narrow series of uneven, off-cambered, sinuous bends of a roadworks diversion and disappeared out of

sight of its predator. It steered, turned, gripped tenaciously and zig-zagged over varying surfaces with an agility and nimbleness that would have had the other driver feeling quite envious. And very embarrassed. The Mazda was a sheer delight that night. This is the first thing you notice about the new 2 – it is easy and enjoyable to drive slow or fast. Forget about 0-100km/h time, top speed or in-gear acceleration figures, because this car is not (and does not pretend to be) a performance hatch. Yet it is able to deliver ample doses of that unquantifiable quality we call “driving pleasure”. The 1498cc four-cylinder engine offers 103bhp at 6000rpm and 137Nm at 4000rpm – both decent, if not exceptional figures – transmitted to the front wheels via a four-speed automatic gearbox. The 16-valve twin-cam engine is eager to respond to the throttle and, combined with an easy-revving nature, will provide sufficient acceleration when called for, even if it does

24 Carma December‘07

20-29Main event.indd 24

get vocal once past 4000rpm. Surprisingly high overall gearing means it cruises with little fuss, the engine spinning at just over 2600rpm at 100km/h. The Mazda’s performance won’t give you an outright adrenalin rush, but you tend to wonder why you and your 2 are usually first off the traffic lights. It has got to do with something called inertia – the greater the mass, the greater the force required to change the object’s state of rest or motion. The little Mazda has a claimed mass of 980kg, which puts it in the company of some old stars such as the Mk 1 Golf GTi, the Alfasud and even its own ancestor, the 1981 Mazda 323 GT – all sub-tonne cars with power outputs ranging between 85 and 110bhp and all (if you were ever lucky enough to try them then) setting new standards in small car dynamics. The new Mazda 2, however, sports the benefits of 21st century technology. Optimising the Macpherson struts in the front and a torsion beam at the rear is a lightweight but heavily-engineered monocoque bodyshell. Instead of using thicker (heavier) material where strength or stiffness is required, the Mazda’s body is constructed from a variety of high-tensile steel alloys. The tensile strength of any material is the ability to withstand forces that cause twist, bending or shear. Using high-tensile

power is common these days, but the big difference in the Mazda is that you would never guess it is electric. It exhibits none of the lifelessness typical of such systems and maintains consistent feedback and weight. Mazda claims that its painstaking efforts at paring weight have been meticulous and thorough, with every detail coming under scrutiny for slimming-down wherever possible without making any compromises in strength or safety. It seems neodymium was chosen for the door speakers rather than the usual cobalt because it is 17 percent lighter! While it may seem small or negligible, the overall sum of each gram lost from individual elements is significant enough. Let us hope this is the start of a new trend in small car design, especially since the price of fuel appears to head no other direction than north. A lighter vehicle, after all, is more fuel-efficient too. So the good-looking new Mazda 2 is good news for the small car buyer. Just as we were beginning to believe that car manufacturers had forgotten how to build compact, inexpensive cars with a genuine fun factor in the equation, this Mazda comes along to remind us otherwise – thanks in no small part to the mass factor.

The Mazda’s performance won’t give you an outright adrenalin rush, but you tend to wonder why you and your 2 are usually first off the traffic lights… steel in parts of the chassis and body which are subjected to forces from suspension movements (or accident collisions for that matter) means that sections of the structural members can be fewer and slimmer and hence lighter overall. The 2’s high body rigidity is the first reason why it rides and handles brilliantly, the second is its low weight. Yes, there is noticeable roll but it refuses to understeer, turns in crisply and switches from side to side in one fluid motion (low inertia, remember?). Rack and pinion steering is assisted by electric power. This of course is another of several weight-saving features in the Mazda – the compact, relatively light motor replaces the chunky hydraulic pump, high-pressure hoses and slave unit in the rack. No big deal you say, since electric

ack in the early 1990s, Mazda had the 121 Revue, the great-grandparent of the new 2. Looking like a cool cross between a metallic blob and a bowler hat, Mazda’s groundbreaking jellybean on wheels was a supermini styled as innovatively as the Autozam AZ-1 supercar-in-miniature, the MX-3 pocket V6 coupe and the Jaguar-esque 929 Sentia. These brave Mazda models symbolised the rolling good times back then in Japan. When the bubble economy burst and Mazda was bailed out by Ford, the 121 had to play it safe and it thus became the dull Demio in 1996. The 2002 replacement model ditched the well-liked “121” name in favour of “2” and sports plenty of positive attributes, but dynamic design isn’t one of them.

GEARBOX 4-speed automatic 0-100KM/H 12.5sec The latest 2007 Mazda 2, like its immediate predecessor, offers many good points (covered earlier by my fellow editors), but this time they include a strikingly attractive design that proudly reverses the ‘growing’ trend of modern superminis typified by the French. Smaller, sexier, lighter yet tighter than before, the new 2 is all curves and verve, with daily practicality and point-to-point driveability as the icing on this slice of cake. With today’s compact cars generally capable but predictable, the design-driven new 2 is a little breath of fresh air. Like the classic 121 Revue, Mazda’s lithe newcomer breaks the mould boldly and beautifully.

PARRY CHRISTMAS This writer prepares to defend himself against the onslaught of December 25th

O

ne has gotta love Christmas. It’s one of those things that’s everything to everyone; and if that makes it, as it does to me, “nothing”, then I’m still a little hard put to hate it. Hate nothing, rant at nothing. It brings to mind the classic Greek tale of Odysseus and the monster Cyclops. The wily Odysseus had introduced his own name as “Nobody” before blinding the wretched creature for eating his crew, and one can imagine the confusion the monster’s cousins (could be friends, I can’t remember) must have felt as a blinded Cyclops screamed, “Nobody has blinded me!”… “Who’s done this to you?”… “Nobody!!” A rare slapstick moment in classical Greek literature, if not for Cyclops’s punctured eyeball spouting monster blood! That said, despite its nothingness, Christmas is truly special in the sense that nothingness is no barrier to its being a right royal pain, an annual annoyance of monumental proportions. I can say that without breaking any laws, right? I don’t mean any disrespect to people who, for whatever reason (religious, retail, etc),

observe this age-old festival. We value traditions at least as much as old trees, and would refrain from chopping the latter even if they’re blocking traffic, on account of their having existed for a long time. It just ain’t the same to chop one old tree and then plant a few saplings to take its place. But back on Christmas… Taking a macro view, the Christmas season is like the world has caught a fever. Suddenly, churches are crowded, the malls even more so; air traffic, trains, indeed every mode of public transport is packed to bursting as everyone decides to go home or holiday at the same time. The system is horrendously overloaded, and security itself becomes a nagging concern that no one really wants to talk about. No one wants to be accused of being a wet blanket. Speaking of wet, if memory serves me correctly, the tsunami that wiped off hundreds of thousands of lives happened around this time of the year too. And what about the roads? Frankly, it gives me the damn jitters. This ferocious need to celebrate and have a merry time, this climate of

Carma December‘07

manufactured goodwill (does any other festival, folk or religious, come close for sentimentality?) – I have never seen that translated into better road manners or more instances of giving way, say, on filtering. Indeed, Christmas and the jolly season just mean more drunks behind the wheel! Really, if you’ve got no pressing need to be outdoors, stay home. To free yourself and loved ones from the tyranny of reruns, rent some videos a few days in advance, preferably some series or other. So I’ll admit it, I just hate Christmas, it’s just too giddy for my liking. And I like it even less this year. The drunks will be there, the vehicular and people jams too, and the littered streets, disorderly behaviour and sweaty throngs – some things just don’t change. But this year, as the world pays obeisance to Credit (it’s a religious thing for a relative minority, a retail experience for most others), Christmas has also found a new turkey – the one being carved by the erection (is this grammatically correct?) of more ERP gantries, which will be turned on for longer, levying higher ERP charges, and fuel prices pegged to encourage love and goodwill towards the environment. Merry Christmas? Sure, for oilmen.

This ferocious need to celebrate and have a merry time isn’t translated into better road manners or more instances of giving way…

SELLING ICE CREAM Thinking of getting into the local car industry? The less qualified you are, the better your chances!

f you need some legal advice, you would probably want to speak with someone who went to law school and not the ice cream man. Yet, when it comes to cars, the industry is full of ‘ice cream sellers’ being paid big bucks to tell us which cars are best and what flavours they should come in. From CEOs to marketing managers to sales executives on the showroom floor, the car industry is chock-full of folks without the slightest interest in cars. Whenever I am introduced to a new manager from a car company, I ask them what they did before they landed this job. The increasingly common response these days seems to be “I used to be in IT”, or “I used to sell mattresses”, or “This is my first job”. No one can blame the latter, of course, as we all have to start from somewhere, but this school leaver is responsible for deciding which options your next car should come with and her (trust me, it’s always a “her”) pay package includes a $100k executive car – that is, if she has a driving licence in the first place. Here’s the other travesty in the car trade – some of these executives can’t drive. That’s like buying meat from a vegetarian butcher. Meanwhile, yours truly has devoted the last decade of his life to knowing the ins and outs of the local car trade to add to a lifetime of reading car magazines and finding out everything there is to know about every car on this island and beyond. My reviews have sold countless cars and made these car companies untold millions. Dealers say they value my insights, but talk is cheap. I would still struggle to make payments for a car they wouldn’t let their pantry auntie drive. It seems that a lifetime of car knowledge or experience doesn’t qualify you for a job in the motor trade – it disqualifies you. Instead, motoring journalists with a wealth of experience are turned into human search engines. I’ve lost track of the number of times that a manager has called asking if they should introduce a new model and how they should price or spec it. And what do I get for imparting my invaluable knowledge? Usually it’s a free lunch and a fake iPod shuffle.

From CEOs to marketing managers to sales executives on the showroom floor, the car industry is chock-full of folks without the slightest interest in cars…

To be fair, the company that gave the terrible ‘Apple’ didn’t ask me for advice. If they did, I would tell them that at least their direct competitor gave out a real iPod shuffle the year before their mystery car was launched. Selling cars might be just a job to these folks, but the car-buying public relies on dealers to offer them the best cars their budgets will allow. With a substantial chunk of their household income devoted to the family vehicle, these

people have every right to an informed decision. Fortunately, there are publications like Carma and Torque that the public can and do depend on whenever they need expert automotive advice. Unfortunately, many dealers don’t seem to appreciate this contribution and prefer to support lifestyle magazines that have as much informative value as Yangtze Cinema has artistic merit. The dynamics of local publishing are

simple – advertising equals support, and a lack of support from car companies translates directly to a loss in revenue for the magazines that eventually pay our salaries. So while our reviews enable ‘ice cream sellers’ to drive bigger and better company cars, poor motoring journalists like me will continue to get around in jalopies.

“I AM DANCING AGAIN…”

It was cars that made our acquaintance, writing that brought us closer together, and it is through these that I seek closure for a recent loss

32

“Y

ou’re the kind of friend… I’ll keep forever and ever… And I’ll probably never find another friend who I will deem worthy such a pretty card…” These are the sweetest words that I have ever received from anyone, but these words speak more about the author than the recipient. They can only come from someone who is sensitive, caring and thoughtful and who is such a friend herself. In theory, forever means eternity, but in reality, forever lasts only as long as one lifetime, and a lifetime is only as long as what God grants us. I recently lost one of my closest friends – one-time Torque editor Jacqueline Lim – to Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM), a rare lung disease characterised by an unusual type of muscle cell that invades the tissue of the lungs, including the airways, and blood and lymph vessels. It is a progressive disease which, over time, leads to increasingly impaired lung function. It was a long and difficult 12-year battle with LAM, one that she fought with utmost strength and courage until the very end. She relentlessly researched on, and tried various alternative treatments, endured all the nasty side effects and pain, always having faith and being optimistic that they would help improve her condition. Friends and family fought alongside her, but instead of us sustaining her, on the contrary, it was her resilience and fighting spirit that kept us going. And we all believed that a good person like her deserved a miracle. We first met during our second year at university. It was cars that brought us together,

and more specifically, Alfa Romeos. She was driving a GTV then, and I, a Spider. I returned to the carpark after lecture to find a note from her on my windscreen. She was putting together a motorsports committee for the varsity’s motoring club and asked if I might be interested to join her. I have gotten a few notes on my windscreens from strangers before and I have never bothered to respond to any on them. But surprisingly, I did in this case, and that was to be the start of the deepest, closest and most special friendship that I have ever shared with anyone. I have friends whom I have known for much longer than I have known her. Some are close friends, others merely acquaintances, but none like the friendship that she and I shared. Our friendship started with cars, and it was this mutual passion that made us click. We organised events for the motoring club together, and we went marshalling for carpark races at Kallang. My one regret was never getting the opportunity to form an all-ladies team with her and take part in a carpark rally. I am sure she would have loved it too. And it was not just cars. We both loved reading, although we have quite different tastes in books; we both have a habit of treasuring and ‘stockpiling’ beautiful and meaningful cards for when the occasion arises; I am just a dog lover, but she had a soft spot not only for dogs, but towards all animals. What I will always remember about her is her love for the people and animals around her. Despite her deteriorating condition in recent years, despite struggling with her breathing

difficulties, her limited mobility and multiple food and drug allergies, she remained the sensitive and thoughtful person that she has always been. I remember once when we were having tea, a stray dog came into the cafe. It had a collar on but it looked lost, and she was so determined on helping the dog that she even contemplated walking the entire length of Holland Road in the hope of bumping into its owner, despite her own physical difficulties. She was a volunteer for Action for Dogs, a volunteer at Samaritans of Singapore counselling people in need, and she was also a great source of comfort and a pillar of strength for many friends and relatives who were going through rough patches. She was the one who introduced me to motoring journalism. I have always loved writing and have been involved in various other genres and publications before, but it was through her that I first started writing for car magazines. She used to comment that unlike for me, where writing excites and thrills and I cannot wait to get started on every story, for her, writing stressed her out as she would constantly dwell and ponder over the story that she was writing, even in her sleep. But that was only because she was such a perfectionist and was very exacting with her own work. It was also writing that brought us closer during the advanced stages of her illness. We both admit to not being very good over the telephone, and some things are not easy to share face-to-face. So we exchanged lengthy emails and SMS-es on a daily basis when she was home-bound and it was through these writings that we shared our deepest and most private thoughts and feelings, which I will always cherish. It was the written word that brought our friendship to the next level, and it is through writing this tribute that I seek closure. Unexplainable things can happen to us when we grieve. When I lost my grandmother who was a devout Christian, a big chunk of my faith went with her; when my pet dog Trofeo passed away a week before my semester paper, I locked myself up in my room and studied so hard that I made Dean’s List. Her passing shall be a constant reminder for me to treasure my loved ones and not take them for granted, and to live life to the fullest by not procrastinating on doing the things that you have always wanted to do. There are things that remind me of her everyday. Watching Ugly Betty on television, I am reminded of how much she used to love watching it; putting a book back on the shelf, I catch a glimpse of a book that she bought me for Christmas; and I am using the very lipstick that she gave me only a few months ago. The strangest thing happened to me yesterday afternoon. I received a call from the confectionary shop where I bought her birthday cake last year, reminding me of her upcoming birthday and asking if I would like to order her a

Jacqueline Lim Rae Fern 20/11/77-31/10/07

cake this year. Choking back the tears, all I could say was, “It won’t be necessary this year…” We will always remember her in our own special way, and we shall remind ourselves about the miracle that did eventually come, although not in the way that we had hoped. She is in a better place now, no longer suffering or in pain, doing the things that she has always loved doing or wanted to do but could not, like travelling, driving and racing. And she can dance again. If only we can see her now. I did not believe this before, but something happened today, and now I do. For us to hold on is to be selfish. We have to let go. As her mum puts it, she is an angel sent by God to touch our lives, to teach us to love one another, to love life and to treasure each and every day that we have. Her work is now done, and she has gone to a place where she can finally stop doing things for others, and enjoy doing things for herself. To Jac, friends forever.

emember the Soluna of yore? Cheap, poorly equipped and pretty ugly, the Thaibuilt budget saloon was a dubious product in no-man’s-land between the darkest bargain basement and the nearest flea market. The latest China sedan you see here is far removed from the Soluna, of course, but it does bring to mind the Soluna’s successor, the original Vios. The new MK even looks like that car, especially around the doors and pillars. Interestingly, the wheelbase is just 2mm more than the old Vios’s and the height is exactly the same at 1435mm. That’s where the similarity ends though, for the MK is noticeably longer

from bumper to bumper, sports prettier tail-lamp clusters and its headlights look larger than life, complete with turn signal lamps nicely nestled inside and a neat pair of fog lamps below. By sub$50k budget car standards, the MK’s front end is unusually big and dramatic. This is further proof of how the Chinese have mastered the deceptive art of “a nice nose”, which is also evident on the CK and every Chery except the A168. Examined more closely, the MK exterior makes a better impression than that of the CK. The paint job is smoother and almost lustrous, the shut lines appear tighter, and the bodywork – unlike the CK – doesn’t shudder when a door or

the boot is slammed shut. In view of the MK’s marginally higher market positioning vis-à-vis the $4k cheaper CK, it comes with speedy eight-spoke alloy rims, classy chrome door handles and trendy wing mirror indicator-repeaters. The MK cockpit is obviously influenced by the old Vios, particularly the centre console and the centrally-mounted instrumentation. Sadly, Geely was less successful in reverse-engineering Toyota’s legendary build quality, with the MK interior blighted by a flimsy dash-top compartment, poor finish in places and quite a few exposed nuts and screws. On a more positive note, the MK cabin is roomy for averagesized people and it has a useful variety of storage points to take care of the usual motoring clutter, including a sizeable glovebox, two seatback pockets, four small doorbins and even a utility shelf under the steering column. There is plenty of load space in the 60/40 split-fold boot and the lid opens to reveal a proper, practical aperture compared to the CK’s ridiculously restrictive boot opening. Despite its station in life, the MK boasts a few touches of luxury likely to surprise and delight the motorist driving on a shoestring. The handy remote fob attached to the key, for example, looks good and offers convenient locking/unlocking from a distance. The instrument meters are equipped with thoughtful three-stage illumination, the centre console switchgear is really well-lit at night and the front seatbelts are adjustable for height. Leather seats are a local cost option, but the standard fabric from the factory is frankly quite plush and it goes well with the firm cushioning. Last but not least, taking a leaf out of the Swedish book on safety,

Geely has equipped the MK with hazard lights which are automatically activated when any door is opened while the engine is running. The 1.5-litre 94bhp unit, shared with the smaller and lighter CK, has to work harder in the MK to get a move on. Acceleration from standstill to expressway speeds is glacial and overtaking needs some advance planning, but you soon learn to work together with the car to make the most of its limited performance. The trick is to keep the momentum up and the braking down to a minimum, the latter without crashing into anything of course. Keeping the engine on the boil would be easier if the clutch actuation were lighter and the manual gearbox less industrial in its shift quality, by the way. Also keeping our hands busier than normal are the far-off indicator stalks. The driving ergonomics are otherwise acceptable, with a straightforward layout of controls and an adequate range of adjustment for the driver’s seat, seatbelt and steering. The MK’s ride is reasonably refined, with the best aspect being the remarkably low wind noise at speed. Compared to the CK, the MK is more comfortable over all road conditions and a little less willing to change direction fast. As for outright handling, the MK is naturally nothing special, but it remains stable and predictable regardless of weather or driver, with anti-lock brakes and an airbag on standby just in case. In other words, the MK is a daily runabout you can depend on in the cut and thrust of traffic.

Despite its station in life, the MK boasts a few touches of luxury likely to surprise and delight the motorist driving on a shoestring…

Like the CK, the newer MK stretches your motoring dollar not only at the point of purchase but also down the road, thanks to high fuel efficiency (nearly 16 kilometres per litre is claimed), low maintenance costs (Geely’s spare parts are said to be cheap and plentiful), inexpensive motor insurance and free roadside recovery in Malaysia. This Chinese cure for your transport woes is available in six different colours, with Geely the automotive acupuncturist offering the MK needle in Regal Yellow, Gilden Green, Midnight Blue, Brocade Silver, Pearl Black or our testcar’s impressive Imperial Red.

GUERILLA

WELFARE Suburban assault has a tough new weapon in the latest Land Rover Freelander 2, which is designed to take the rough with the smooth

S

ingapore is a garden city with endless greenery and surprising tracts of unspoilt countryside. Our Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, believe it or not, has more species of trees than the whole of North America. Ultimately, however, our little tropical island is a concrete jungle where there are as many buildings as there are trees and roads take up as much precious land area as housing. On those roads are all manner of drivers, many of them incompetent and inconsiderate, which is why the sports-utility animal thrives here. Tall, tough and trusty, it’s a survival tool in suicidal traffic. Now Land Rover, the undisputed British master of 4x4 motoring, is offering the latest weapon in urban assault – something compact yet chunky and packed with firepower, rather like an SAS submachine gun. Indeed, the new Freelander 2 (let’s call it F2) is one of the best weapons on wheels you can tout in city traffic today. Size-wise, the latest Landie is actually 20mm shorter than the Honda CR-V from nose to tail

38

and has a mere 40mm longer wheelbase, but the much wider wheel tracks, higher roofline and fiercely upright edges make the F2 look like a bigger vehicle. Select design elements from the storming Range Rover Sport (grille and front fender vents) and the Discovery 3 (door pillars and handles) confirm the F2 as a stout member of the outdoorsy family. A choice of 11 exterior colours, including two poser shades called Rimini Red and Tambora Flame, wrap up the F2’s handsome design. Under that signature clamshell bonnet beats a transversely-mounted 3.2-litre straight-six also employed in the Volvo XC range. In line with the F2’s paramilitary mission on paper, Land Rover engineers have modified the engine and its ancillaries to make them highly resistant to mud, dust, sand, water and possibly a biological attack too. And the oil supply system is designed to cope with the sharp tilt angles off-road that the car is capable of. Unsurprisingly, like most modern SUVs, the F2 is seldom far away from civilization and

its paved roads, where its driving civility and on-board amenities feel right at home. The peaky, free-revving six-cylinder works well with the smooth, responsive six-speed automatic, and the ride is refined apart from an underlying firmness and noticeable tyre patter, especially when slowing down. The steering, with 2.6 quick turns lock to lock, is geared for urban response rather than agricultural adventure, while the commanding driving position, generous ground clearance and beefy “All Weather” Wrangler tyres allow the F2 to dominate suburbia without breaking a sweat. It’s a practical vehicle too, thanks to decent cabin space and built-in flexibility in the form of 60/40 split rear seats and a reversible boot floor cover with carpet on one side and a mush-proof surface on the other. Cargo capacity is 755 litres standard and 1670 litres expanded, enough in either case for most intents and purposes. The dual-zone auto air-conditioning is effective, the leather upholstery is comfortable and the Alpine nine-speaker hi-fi system, complete with extra

Land Rover engineers have modified the engine and its ancillaries to make them highly resistant to mud, dust, sand, water and possibly a biological attack too… controls and headphone jacks for backseat audio addicts, is a powerful delight. The best kit on board the F2 is Terrain Response, Land Rover’s tried and trusted proprietary 4x4 system for city slickers. More than five decades of Land Rover expertise and experience in off-roading are packed into a straightforward rotary controller, whose interface is both bomb-proof and baboon-proof. Simply select any of the four modes (general driving, grass/gravel/snow, mud/ruts, desert/sand) and carry on, confident that Terrain Response will adjust everything accordingly to make it a walk in the park for you – everything except the feng shui in the vehicle’s vicinity. Unluckily for us, the driver’s power window on our F2 test-car conked out, but fortunately for Land Rover, the rest of the car is built better

than that. Compared to the previous Freelander, the F2 feels significantly tighter and has superior switchgear, the most impressive of which are the nicely-rubberised plastic knobs for the audio and air-con panels. Even the key and the owner’s handbook are more substantial than before, with the manual almost encyclopedic in its size and weight. In safety terms, the F2 might be twice the car that its predecessor was, thanks to the strong monocoque body, sturdy safety cell, an array of on-road/off-road electronic driving aids and no less than seven airbags as standard. Land Rover’s new suburban assault vehicle is a veritable Swiss Army knife for guerilla drivers who love to command and conquer wherever they roam, or at least enjoy beating smaller cars into submission on the road.

The previous V70 appears ‘cleaner’ and lower-slung, whereas its successor looks shapelier and more substantial, the latter validated by the car’s greater size. The length of the body has increased by 115mm to 4825mm and the wheelbase has stretched 55mm to reach 2815mm, benefitting both interior space and exterior real estate. Activate that power-operated tailgate to reveal a boot that sets the class standard in design and dimensions. The outright volume can be varied easily from 555 litres to a whopping 1580 litres, thanks to a flexible 40/20/40 splitfold backseat combo, and the luggage area

is thoughtfully equipped with multi-function aluminium rails, moveable anchorage points, built-in securing eyelets, cargo netting and a tonneau cover to maximise the car’s loadlugging potential. Specify a pair of roof bars plus a hardy floor mat and your wagon workhorse is all ready to roll. The horsepower in this case comes from a 2.5-litre 20-valve five-cylinder boosted by a light-pressure turbo. The unit’s useful 200bhp and 300Nm are spread neatly across the rev range, with the ample pull at the low end making it feel like a well-sorted naturallyaspirated 3-litre. That likeable five-pot burble, by the way, continues to be an aural pleasure like few other engine notes. Transmission duties are handled by a six-speed automatic with Geartronic override, which shifts smoothly and responsively on the go but suffers from a thump or two when stepping down as the car comes to a stop.

SUMMARY VOLVO V70 2.5T (A) PRICE $168,000 including COE The V70’s performance is impressive for a big, heavy estate. Initial acceleration and mid-range overtaking are both performed well in the local context, and it handles like a hatchback three-quarters its size, helped by accurate and well-weighted steering. It even offers three different levels of servo assistance, selectable via the dashboard’s car set-up menu, with the medium setting being suitable for most people. The same people will also be impressed by the V70’s quiet ride and comfortable leather chairs, while the driver will delight in the solid hi-fi system, the idiotproof Bluetooth phone connectivity and the classy, user-friendly cockpit with its cool ‘floating’ centre console. A ‘death-defying’ array of airbags and crumple zones, coupled with paranoid seatbelt reminders, keep the V70 safe and sound in all situations imaginable. Even accident victims not inside the car are protected – the front end is specially designed to reduce the injuries suffered by pedestrians and cyclists who accidentally crash into the V70. Mr IKEA ought to try this car. He might like it even more than his trusty 240 GL estate. Of course, if he does buy the new 2007 V70, chances are he would still be driving it in the year 2021, but that’s another story altogether.

SUBURBAN SUBSPECIES Volvo’s new XC70 crossover is a different animal from the V70 on which it is based, thanks to its butch bodywork and rugged persona SUMMARY VOLVO XC70 3.2 (A) PRICE $180,000 including COE ENGINE 6 cylinders in line, 3192cc DOHC 24V POWER 238bhp@6200rpm TORQUE 320Nm@3200rpm 0-100km/h 8.6sec TOP SPEED 215km/h X Outdoorsy personality, advanced features, not afraid to get dirty

“I

magine you are driving on an open motorway, when you look out the side window across the bleak landscape, you are overtaken by a car driving in the rough desert with a trail of dust behind it. That was the vision in our minds when we started designing the all-new XC70,” explains Stefan Jansson, the car’s exterior designer. Singapore has wide-open expressways, yes, but we don’t have deserts and the only dust we suffer is at construction sites, so the XC70 is a bit out of context on our island. Anyway, this Volvo crossover isn’t meant for Asia or even Europe, places where multi-seat, multi-purpose SUVs like the XC90 are popular. The XC70 formula is only appreciated fully in the US, where it actually outsells the V70 by a factor of five. The Americans love the Volvo’s blend of urban station-wagon and countryside sports-utility, but the rest of us may find it pretty pointless when the V70 is already so complete and so capable in suburban situations. Having said that, the XC70 can do a few things that the V70 cannot. These include mounting kerbs at will, looking unusually good in a country club carpark and scoring brownie points with the kids on the school run. On a more serious note, the XC70 not only rides higher than the V70 but also offers a higher level of equipment, including bi-xenon headlights, the clever Personal Car Communicator key and Volvo’s newfangled active safety systems BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) and ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control). Off the beaten track, the XC70 offers grippy Haldex AWD, easy-does-it Hill Descent Control courtesy of Land Rover, useful ground clearance

of 210mm and a wading depth of 300mm. It’s tough enough for rural areas still untouched by the urban sprawl, which would mean the unspoilt corners of Singapore and most parts of Malaysia. More importantly for the target market, the XC70 looks like it can handle agricultural adventures, thanks to its ‘tiptoeing’ ride height, purposeful plastic cladding, underbumper skid-plates, and roof rails ‘growing’ from the front pillars like little tusks. The red reflectors at the rear are a tad heavy-handed though, but the standard “XC” branding on the 17-inch alloy wheels is a delightful detail. It might be a hardy beast on the outside, but the XC70 is a luxurious softy on the inside – acres of leather and carpeting, accents of cool aluminium, electronic everything on board, plus Volvo’s signature interior highlights of a super-slim centre stack, superb seats and a world-class audio system. Cabin space is good, boot space is great and practical compartments abound. Safety is of course a given in this new Volvo model, which comes equipped with enough

airbags, crumple zones and high-tech driving aids to survive any accident short of a Nicoll Highway collapse. On regular well-paved roads, the XC70 is refined and comfortable, with ample performance available from its 3.2-litre sixcylinder. The engine revs freely and steps up the pace once past 3000rpm, with the six-speed Geartronic auto playing its part to keep progress smooth and responsive. Incidentally, thirst for fuel appears to be a problem in this car, with the XC70 averaging just 6.6 kilometres per litre in our hands. Compared to the V70, the XC70’s cornering is a lot less flat and a little less steadfast, but there is impressive outright grip from its sporty 235/55 R17 Pirelli Scorpion Zero Asimmetrico tyres, which have the further advantage of being usable over rough terrain nearly in the middle of nowhere. In conclusion, if you like the concept of an Outward Bound wagon with the works, then the new XC70 is just the ticket. If you don’t, simply stick to the safe choice that is the XC90.

his humble, honest-to-goodness Mercedes costs a whopping $84k less than its allsinging, all-dancing sibling on the next page. If you ignore the big price gap and the hugely lower performance and specification of the C180 vis-à-vis the C350 and concentrate on the basics, you will discover that the entry-level C-Class is a decent drive and a worthy rival to the brilliant BMW 320i, which is high praise indeed. Apart from different badging, uglier alloy wheels and a smaller twin-tailpipe exhaust, the C180 looks like the C200, and it also offers the same inspired choice between the traditional Elegance look (tristar on bonnet) and the extrovert Avantgarde look (tristar in grille). Our C180 test-car comes in Elegance trim, but far more fascinating is its madcap combination of white exterior and oatmeal interior, possibly chosen by the Daimler product manager when he was in a drunken stupor at the company’s Oktoberfest party. German sobriety is otherwise the keyword for this car. Everything, from styling and engineering to the way the switchgear works, is measured; every element in the driving experience is mature. The detuned engine is down 28bhp and 20Nm compared to the full-blown C200, but the supercharged output is well-spread across the rev range and the five-speed automatic gearbox is well-grounded in shifting skills. On Singapore’s slow roads and in sleepy traffic, the performance is almost perky. Like in the C200, the C180 engine is quite a racket in the last 2000rpm leading

44

The C180 sits at the bottom of the current C-Class range, but it’s still likeable and strangely desirable

to the redline, but it’s refined during normal driving. The ride is pliant and pleasurable, and it gets even better as the speed goes higher, while the roadholding is quite excellent, assisted by the best C-Class steering yet in terms of connectivity to the road. The C180 cockpit is as comfortable as the C200’s, with the only omissions being the latter’s parking sensors and power-operated front passenger seat. Sober leather, quality plastics and an oversized owner’s manual continue to dominate the interior, along with effective audio and air-con systems. Last but not least, cabin and cargo space is good. The new C180 proves that a base model doesn’t necessarily have to be basic and boring. Indeed, the smallest and most affordable Mercedes saloon has come a long way since the 190E.

obody needs something like the Mercedes C350. He must want it. When the C280 is only slightly slower from standstill to 100km/h and nearly as punchy in the mid-range, while saving the considerable sum of $34k along the way, the C350 is clearly an indulgent choice that is also irrelevant in a place like Singapore where strict speed limits apply. But the desire to get the best in the range is irresistible and often illogical. Just look at watch fans. A standard Seiko and a Grand Seiko both tell the time, but those in the know are willing to pay a big premium for a GS. The same goes for the C350, the last word in C-Class performance until the C63 AMG powers into town. Externally, the C350 looks like any other V6 C, right down to the double tailpipes, but it boasts an AMG bodykit and blazing bi-xenon headlights as standard equipment. Most importantly, behind that bold new grille beats a 3.5-litre V6 developing 272bhp and 350Nm, enough to break the traction of the rear 245/40 R17 SportContact 2 rubber without breaking a sweat. Even though this powerplant is taken from the S350, it sounds dramatically different in the C350. The initial stepoff seems a little laidback, but the engine quickly gets into its stride and hammers away in concert with the splendid seven-speed automatic, pushing the car ahead with great gusto. It’s like riding on an impossibly smooth typhoon, cocooned in a black leather cabin full of creature comforts. The C350 can really corner too, thanks to its Advanced Agility performance package, also available on the C280. The adaptive damping

Helping it along are the accurate, well-weighted steering and the excellent driving position. The C350 cockpit is more of the same from the shiny W204 C-Class catalogue, but Daimler has sweetened the expensive deal by specifying a marvellous Harman/Kardon Logic 7 surround sound system that comes complete with a six-piece DVD changer and Linguatronic voice operation. I

had my first crush at the age of four – it was a stud named Sud, and he was an Italian with dashing good looks and performance to boot. And like any hot-blooded Italian, he charmed the socks off this little girl who was barely tall enough to see herself in his wing mirror. This began my love affair with Alfa Romeo. It was inevitable for someone who literally grew up with the Italian marque, with almost every other car in the family being an Alfa Romeo, sometimes more than one model simultaneously, and for someone who was almost named Giulietta, after the first Alfa model to have a name rather than a cipher or number. So how could I pass over the opportunity to visit Museo Storico Alfa Romeo (Alfa Romeo Historical Museum) and Centro Stile Alfa Romeo (Alfa Romeo Style Centre) in Arese, Milan? This is the place where every Alfa gets bestowed with its good looks. Muslims perform the Hajj, a pilgrimage to Mecca which every able-bodied Muslim who can afford to do so, must, at least once in their lifetime. For me, Arese is my Mecca and nothing is getting between me and my promised land; not even the non-English

■ 8C 2900B Lungo,1938 speaking navigation system in the Alfa Brera that I picked up from Fiat Centre in Milan for my drive to Arese, many a missed turn, or the passersby who had no clue as to what I was asking. But it was meant to be because I made it there, eventually. If you believe in miracles, believe me, this is one of them. And clichéd as it sounds, it was all worth it. Museo Storico Alfa Romeo is an enduring monument to technological progress on the one hand, and to social progress on the other. It bears testament to the industrial and technical developments over the last century. But more importantly, the collection celebrates the sporting personality and avant-garde engineering of Alfa Romeos over the years, and it is a fitting tribute to the work of those responsible in shaping this glorious Milanese marque. Inaugurated in December 1976, the museum covers an area of 4800 square metres spread over six floors and divided into four main sections. Arranged in chronological order to allow visitors to trace the evolution of the species, the first section is devoted to production and competition cars such as the 1910 24 HP

Torpedo (Alfa’s first 300-off production run when Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica di Automobili aka ALFA was first established in Portello) and the 1925 RL SS, which came in third in the 1926 German Grand Prix. The second section comprises 11 so-called dream cars and showcases some concept cars that were never put into production. Displayed here are cool designs with wild ideas such as integrated doors, upward-opening front windscreen and roof, and a driver’s seat with a built-in ejection feature. Alfa Romeo’s exploits in the aviation field forms the basis of the third section, while the fourth section focuses on Alfa Romeo’s glorious years in motorsports. Models such as the P2 (a supercharged straight-eight with a lucky clover leaf thrown in for good measure) and the P3 were World Championship winners. The 33 SC 12, a 520bhp 12-cylinder model, completed Alfa Romeo’s stellar motorsports record by sweeping all eight of the World Championship titles in 1977. Worthy of mention is the fact that every single car in the museum, from the very first to the most recent, is in running condition,

FEATURE and many of them are loaned to museums or exhibitions all around the world and make appearances during vintage car events. Before I had the chance to recover from the euphoria of touring my personal Garden of Eden, it was time for a visit to Centro Stile Alfa Romeo where I was to meet the man responsible for – and who wields the power to decide – how the next few upcoming Alfa Romeo models will look like. Meet Frank Stephenson, the newlyappointed Alfa Romeo Style Director. When I arrived, Stephenson was in the middle of a discussion with a group of foreign students on a three-month attachment to Centro Stile. I instantly felt right at home, surrounded by the design ateliers, the draughting stations and the presentation rooms, but I was also reminded of my days as an architecture student,

facing nerve-wrecking critique sessions from professors. But that should have been the least of my worries because Stephenson’s unassuming and friendly disposition immediately put me at ease. The first thing that struck me was his impeccable English without any European accent, which on hindsight should come as no surprise given his American background and education at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. In fact, as far as linguistics is concerned, Stephenson is a master of not just English, but Italian, German and Spanish as well. And evidently, Stephenson also speaks the language of design. The Moroccan-born automotive designer has big names such as BMW, Fiat and Ferrari under his belt. He replaces Wolfgang Egger, renowned for his work on the

Alfa 8C Competizione and the current Alfa 159. Stephenson is more than worthy as a successor, having spent 11 years with BMW, where he worked on the original X5 and created his best-known design to date, the 2001 new Mini. Joining the Fiat Group in 2002, Stephenson is the genius behind the Maserati MC12 and the Ferrari F430. He also oversaw Pininfarina’s work on the Maserati Quattroporte and the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti. Stephenson took me on a personal tour of Centro Stile despite his busy schedule and spoke with me about his upcoming projects, as well as what Alfa Romeo means to him. Check out the accompanying box story on the next page for our delightful dialogue.

In your new role as Alfa Romeo Style Director, is there a new direction that you have set for Centro Stile? There was nothing wrong to begin with, so there is nothing that needs changing. We just need to remain true to our roots and be passionate about what we do. Alfa Romeo has always been about unique and emotive design and we shall continue to focus on these qualities. Your first project with Alfa Romeo is the revived Junior, what is your vision for its design? The Junior is a small car that we are designing in response to market demands, but at the same time, it will embody Alfa’s unique qualities and values. It is what I would call a pocket rocket. Can you share with us what is in the pipeline for the next few years, i.e. what new Alfa models can we expect? After the Junior comes the 149, which is a good step forward from its predecessor and will pick up on the 147’s success. We are also planning an Alfa crossover that will fall within the step-down SUV category. We are looking into environmentconscious factors in our design and engineering of this new crossover. The 169, successor for the 166 flagship, is also in the works.

In terms of design, how do you strike a balance between form and function? Form is determined by design, whereas function relates to engineering. The design must remain faithful to the original intent and values, despite competing concerns over ergonomics, safety, fuel economy etc. Engineering is what it takes to make the design workable. What is it like working with external designers such as Pininfarina? I have worked with Pininfarina and Bertone previously. As consultants, they provide invaluable external opinions with regards to design, without the excess baggage that internal opinions may bring. And being Italians themselves, they also understand the intrinsic design values behind fellow Italian marques. But our own design studio remains the key driver behind every design. You were trained in California and you have worked with European brands like BMW, Fiat, Ferrari and now Alfa Romeo. Is there a European trademark style versus, say, American or Japanese car designs? Definitely. We all have our nationalistic traits. For instance, the French have their own design quirks, the Germans tend to be more engineering-driven and straightforward, while the English may be a little more conservative. The Italians are very much about emotive design. Can you give us an overview of the Alfa Romeo design process? The Product Strategy team first develops a brief for a car to fit a certain segment, while the Design team comes up with a design brief. The two come together and are developed into a series of initial sketches, from which about five will be selected for further development. Clay models of three of these will be made, followed by full-sized models of the final two options. When the design for the production car

has been more or less finalised, there will be feasibility studies by the engineering team who will advise on details such as whether the lights will fit into the body shape. This is when the design and engineering teams get together to build prototypes, resolve safety issues etc prior to actual production. Which is the most memorable car that you have designed in your career and why? This is a difficult question because every single car is special in its own way. The Mini started a whole new series of fun, small cars. The BMW X5 didn’t even exist before. The Maserati MC12 is a race car for the streets. The Fiat Bravo is a compact car that we developed in an extremely short time to meet the demands of this category. Which is your favourite Alfa Romeo? The Giulietta. Give us three words that best embody the Alfa Romeo spirit of Cuoro Sportivo Three words are difficult, but to me, Alfa Romeos are about passion, seduction and sensuality, just as you have described in your review of the Alfa Spider [Carma August ’07 issue]. Alfas evoke all your senses to arouse an emotional response. They are like Ferraris, but we can actually afford them. The People’s Ferrari, perhaps?

FORMULA ‘S’ The racecar development team at NUS School of Mechanical Engineering is gearing up for next year’s Formula SAE competition – here are the nuts and bolts of their endeavour

If you are someone with aspirations to emulate Adrian Newey or Patrick Head, read on…

50

A

n exciting Formula 1 season has just ended but here in Singapore, the excitement continues to mount exponentially by the day because for the first time in the history of the motorsport, one round of the championship will be held on our roads in September 2008. A proposed permanent racetrack, albeit for races other than F1, has only fuelled the local motorsport frenzy. It will be a while, however, a long while perhaps, before we can hear “Majulah Singapura” played at a champagne-splashed F1 podium prize presentation, but there are other areas of motorsport we can get into straightaway. If you are someone with aspirations to emulate Adrian Newey or Patrick Head, read on. Students from National University of Singapore’s School of Mechanical Engineering have designed and built one racecar per year since 2003. These specials are based on a strict Formula stipulated by SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers). Like F1 cars, FSAE cars must satisfy a stringent set of technical specifications encompassing dimensions, engine

specifications, safety requirements etc. The cars are not quite F1 in form or function, but are nonetheless racing machines in every sense of the word and they compete with one other at the annual SAE meet in May. The latest sixth generation of NUS’s FSAE racecar is currently being built. As in previous years, the entire programme begins with a clean sheet of paper. A concept is created, then the hardware specifications are determined after extensive engineering calculations and even cost evaluation, followed by 3-D CAD modelling. The students, who by then have undergone training in various workshop skills such as machining and welding, then begin the construction of the car. Yes, all by themselves, under the guidance of one truly brilliant and talented advisor. During the months that follow, the team members (12 highly energetic young men) literally sacrifice

their social life to spend nights at the engineering workshop getting the car into shape because the days are just too heavily occupied with regular lectures and assignments. As you can well imagine, progress is rarely ever as smooth as hoped and sometimes it is back to the drawing board to redesign a certain component or assembly. The car currently under development is an evolution of the 2007 predecessor, but it incorporates a totally new chassis in addition to various upgrades in the pursuit of better performance and handling. Some of the materials and components are deliberately chosen to be different from previous years’ so as to widen the technical database. A space-frame chassis is, when we went to press, almost complete. Unlike the cheaper monocoque chassis used in massproduced passenger cars, a space-frame chassis is constructed from a matrix of high-tensile steel tubes welded together. Tubes of larger crosssection are used where strength is required, such as at suspension mounts, and where stiffness is desired, several small tubes can be arranged in a truss formation like we often see in tower crane booms. The result is an extremely rigid structure

far stiffer than a monocoque of similar weight. The students weld the entire chassis together, with accuracy assured by their recently acquired datum table – a high-precision flat-bed with bolt-on attachments which accurately form the required dimensions and maintain the integrity during the welding process. The engine is a mass-produced item – a four-cylinder twin-cam unit off a Honda CBR600 motorcycle. The ’07 car used a similar engine with a six-speed sequential gearbox unit and its strong performance and reliability encouraged the new team to stick to the same powerplant. Modifications will be made to optimise the performance and to comply with the Formula. For the first time, the NUS boys (sadly, there have been no girls on the team, yet) are developing their own ECU for this car, which will incorporate traction control and launch control. The bespoke ECU will also provide data that the team can use to evaluate and/or diagnose engine performance. Another interesting new development is the carbonfibre air plenum and tuned intake pipes, which have obvious benefits in weight reduction as well as in gaining experience shaping and forming this material.

■ On standby here are the project car’s wet-weather tyres

■ The drawings of the uprights to be fabricated Black carbonfibre mats, which look like satin cloth with a dazzling weave pattern, are layered over a wax mould and liberal amounts of epoxy are applied. Once set, the low-melting-point wax is evacuated simply by applying heat. Gearbox is the standard Honda CBR sixspeed unit and though it suits the purposes of the FSAE racecar sufficiently, the data gathered from previous events have indicated that 5th and 6th gears are never used. So this time, the gearbox will be made lighter by the absence of all the components (gears, synchromesh etc) for ratios 5 and 6. A Salisbury limited-slip differential transmits torque to the two rear wheels. At the competition, in between ‘races’, the students have to alter the suspension settings, engine mapping, steering geometry etc in preparation for the next event, because each is vastly different from the other. Hence, the quick and accurate adjustability of these elements is a major consideration. Short of a 24-hour Le Mans-type race, the proving events cover every nuance in racing. So the FSAE is a comprehensive competition that trains the team members to become extremely competent in all aspects of racecar engineering. They must thoroughly understand how the car works, which is why once selected as a team member, each student undergoes an intensive seven-month course on fundamental principles of automotive engineering. Incidentally, the National University of Singapore offers mechanical engineering students the option of Automotive Engineering as a third-year elective.

The phone’s ergonomics are excellent, thanks to a bright and clear 2.2-inch display with auto photo rotate, illuminated camera shortcut keys, and touch-sensitive on-screen ‘buttons’ for easier user navigation. Last but not least, this new Cyber-shot phone provides fast 3.5G connectivity.

National Servicemen, including reservists, are not allowed to bring camera-phones to their camps. Samsung’s swivelling SGH-F200 has no camera function, so it’s ideal for our men in green. Best of all, it will entertain them during those inevitable lulls in training, thanks to its FM radio and integral music player, the latter able to read multiple audio formats and manage music files with aplomb. The F200 also comes with a friendly user interface – the phone mode is engaged when the phone is flipped open, while the music mode is activated when the phone is closed. Standby time of up to 250 hours and talk time of up to 5 hours, plus an expansion slot for a microSD up to 2GB and Bluetooth v2.0 connectivity, complete the F200’s repertoire. Sadly, army green is not one of the colours available for this gadgety buddy, with the recreational soldier having to make do with Wine Red, Deep Blue and Sweet Pink.

BLACK AND WIDE Pioneer’s latest widescreen plasma TV, KURO (meaning “black” in Japanese), is said to feature significantly deeper black levels, richer colours and sharper details. Its advanced television technology includes a Direct Colour Filter, errorless and noiseless video signal processing, a selfadjusting Optimum mode and superb speakers. The new KURO is available in 42- and 50-inch screen sizes in HD Ready format, as well as 50- and 60-inch in Full HD glory.

DELL-EGATION Dell’s direct business model is its signature, but the computer giant has recently diversified the way it sells its desktops and notebooks here by partnering Courts, one of Singapore’s largest retailers of consumer electronics. This groundbreaking partnership makes the Dell retail experience available to in-store IT buyers at all nine Courts stores islandwide, with special system bundles to boot.

KEEP IN TOUCH The new HTC Touch Dual is the second device after the original Touch to feature HTC’s innovative and intuitive TouchFLO user interface, which now includes the ability to view photo slideshows using on-screen controls and to zoom or rotate images with just your fingertips. Scrolling and browsing of messages, contact lists, documents and web pages on the Touch screen have also been smoothened, while a sleek slide-out keypad provides another operating option. Other notable features of the Touch Dual include HSDPA and GPRS/EDGE connectivity, a robust 400MHz computer chip, a useful suite of Windows Mobile software, microSD memory expansion and a 2-megapixel CMOS camera. The high-end HTC Touch Dual is exclusively distributed by SingTel.

SMALL BUT STRONG The new Creative GigaWorks HD50 stereo speakers are compact and short, but they pack a surprising punch in their audio output. This is made possible by HD50’s audiophile-grade components and revolutionary technology, all designed to deliver playback with syrupy smooth highs and nicely natural lows. The heart of the system is made up of titanium super tweeters, high-definition two-inch drivers and powerful Class-D amplifiers separately dedicated and matched to the tweeters and drivers to give improved ‘headroom’ and good old loudness. Built-in BasXPort, acoustically engineered to channel sound waves from each speaker’s inner chamber to the soundstage, allows the HD50 to produce more pronounced bass without needing a subwoofer. Creative’s new GigaWorks HD50 speakers have a suggested retail price of $249.

The three-course tcc merry menu starts with a light yet hearty seafood soup, goes straight into the main event offering either Oven-Baked Chicken with Spicy Brown Sauce or Pan-Fried Sea Perch with Sweet Pepper Sauce, and then rounds it off with the Jingle Choco-Nutty, an indulging pairing of warm chocolate fig cake and cappuccino ice cream, finished with sweet hazelnuts. On the log cake front, tcc is offering four delicious creations made to order – Strawberry Snowcake, Mango Diva, Cocoa Fantasy and White Christmas. Completing the epicurean holiday experience are tcc’s two festive beverages – Berry Oreo, a refreshing concoction of raspberry and Oreo laced with a touch of fruit, and Frosty Bailey, a chocolatey frappe blend with a minty fusion of Bailey’s and rum.

MOD JOB

JUMBO JET Add a pair of wings and this tarmac-munching Porsche may just fly!

H

A 520bhp, 720Nm car would me more than sufficient to satisfy even the most demanding of petrolheads. If the car in question was a Porsche, then even better as there is now a famous name to ‘drop’ as and when needed. The white SUV you see in these pages is a Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, which sits at the summit of the Cayenne range and the power and torque figures I mentioned earlier are its outputs.

Actually, they WERE its ouputs. It is churning out more than 600bhp and 800Nm now! To put things in perspective, in power terms, this is 3 times that of a Volkswagen Golf GTI and 5 times what the Suzuki Swift Sports can muster. Other cars that are currently available with 600+ bhp include the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 and Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLR. However, none of these million dollar supercars can produce anywhere near the huge amounts

of twisting force that this road behemoth has on tap! Before I go into the performance mods proper, let’s have a look at its ‘show’ enhancements. With its tall stance and inherent muscularity in its design, not much was needed to make this Cayenne Turbo S stand out from the crowd so only two things were done; the air intakes grilles in the front bumper were sprayed white so as to blend with the rest of the car, and a set of alloy wheels were added.

MOD JOB

And what an incredible set of wheels it is! Measuring a humongous 22-inch across and shod with superbroad 295 width Continental Sport Contact 3 tyres, it really provides additional ‘muscle’ to this already Mr. Universe-looking SUV. The only’ downside’ was that it made the Tarox brake disc rotors really small in comparison, even though the front ones at 400mm (16 inches!) were also the largest that I have ever come across. The Cayenne Turbo S is powered by a twin-turbocharged V8 4511cc engine which is dry-sumped and features two intercoolers, four camshafts and Porsche’s VarioCam technology. Supremely powerful with oodles of torque on demand, it has been further enhanced by the guys at JuzzForCars. Cooling and air flow is very important in ensuring that

engine efficiency is optimised and this is even more so in forced-induction units. Hence, the intercoolers were customised and upgraded to ensure that they can cool a greater volume of air, and a BMC filter was installed for good measure. Next up, the engine was ‘boosted’ with a DMS ECU which features DME remapping and a customised tuning performed by Rhommel of JuzzForPower. This effectively increased the boost pressure of the turbochargers, induced more fuelling and adjusted the ignition timing, which resulted in the increase in power and torque. Last but not least, a Blitz blowoff valve was installed to release pressure in the air intake, and a full Milltek exhaust system was installed

60

comprising turbo downpipes, a huge, stainless steel muffler, and four large diameter exhaust pipes. At idle, this prodigious engine emits a super-low, pronounced rumble, as it lies in wait. Step on the floor-hinged ‘go’ pedal and the V8 and its turbos come to life and the engine note hardens considerably. This is followed by a superawesome exhaust note which reverberates through the air as this huge, 2.4-tonne beast of a car

SPECS LIST leaps forward and ‘eats up’ tarmac on its way to a sub-5 second 0-100km/h timing. Watching it from a distance, I was amazed at how fast it gains speed, and how much it sounds like a jet plane taking off! Traditional Porsche aficionados, eat your heart out. This is a true blue Porsche, complete with supercar DNA; it just has two extra doors and a whole lot more attitude!

MOD JOB

VAN-BORGHINI DOBLO You don’t need a million dollars to get yourself an Italian two-seater

H

Who says owning a van has to be boring? Not the owner of this funky looking jet-black Fiat Doblo you see in these pages. Robert decided that even though he needed his trusty van to serve his daily working needs, he is still going to personalise it as much as he can, and make it fun and enjoyable to drive. After all, he spends many hours a day driving it around Singapore. Let’s start with the exterior makeover. The van was dressed up with an all-over decal job, comprising may Fiat logos and Italian stripes for good measure. The old, blue Fiat badges on the bonnet and rear doors were also junked in favour of the new, brighter red ones.

Next up, side steps, a roof spoiler and a set of Borbet 15-inch five-spoke alloy wheels were added for a sporty effect. Last (and certainly not least) on the aesthetic agenda were a chromed kerbside mirror mounted on the bonnet, and a pair of Hella fog lights mounted on the front bumper. If you think the outside looks like no other Doblo, or van, for that matter, then the inside is going to blow your socks off! First up, a full surround sound audio system was installed. This system comprises 10 Soundstream Tarantula speakers including ceilingmounted surround speakers and a rear door-mounted subwoofer, Soundstream amplifiers, a mega-sized Zulex 15.4-inch LCD display, and NEXTBASE 8-inch

dash-mounted LCD display with TVMobile console. Elsewhere, there are customised rear seats, which together with the front seats, are lovingly wrapped in leather complete with stitched Fiat logos, and for storage purposes, a shelf was specially made to fit the rear, complete with lockable drawers and removable mounting pins. To ensure that Robert has ample assistance when reversing with a fully-loaded rear, a roofmounted reverse camera was installed, complete with its own monitor. In all, Robert spent almost ten grand on ‘zhnging’ his Doblo, and judging from the smile on his face as he showed off his

ICECOOL

ASK FOR ONE GET TWO!

This ‘two-faced’ ICE setup caters to movies and music, for the whole family

H

Alan, the owner of this pristine Lexus RX350 you see within these pages, wanted a unique ICE ‘solution’ – two separate setups; one for his audiophile tastes in music, and another for his family who are movie junkies. Alan also had one more request (or should I say demand); he wanted the interior of his luxury SUV to remain as ‘showroom’ as possible i.e. no bright lights and definitely nothing protruding out from anywhere to upset the stylish ambience of the cabin.

With this seemingly ‘impossible’ task at hand, Miss Chan of Chuan Sing Auto Accessories, and her team went to work straightaway without even batting an eyelid. The headunit, the ‘brain’ of any ICE setup, is arguably the most important component and it was chosen from Pioneer’s top-of-the-line ODR (Optical Digital Reference) range. The backbone of the ODR range is its complete digital audio signal transmission which eliminates the occurrence of signal deterioration.

The result is pure unadulterated signals that are then ‘fed’ into no less than 4 Sinfoni amplifiers. For the all-important front stage, the Rainbow Platinum component speakers, which consist of himid drivers, and tweeters, were powered by a pair of Sinfoni Prestigio Class A amplifiers. These components were neatly installed on the dashboard in customised housings and looks like it was fitted at the Lexus factory. Taking care of the mid-level frequencies were the Rainbow Vanadium mid woofers which were neatly installed in the door panels

and tasked with supplying them ‘juice’ was a 2-channel Sinfoni 150.2X amplifier. Last but not least, was a single bridged Sinfoni power amp whose task was to power-up the Rainbow Vanadium 12-inch sub woofer residing in the boot, in its own custom enclosure. This takes care of the audiophile portion of the setup and for the movie-watchers in Alan’s family, more high-end Pioneer components were added. First up, the Pioneer AVHP6850DVD receiver was chosen and what a piece of kit this is! 2DIN-sized, 6 DVDs, 7-inch LCD, and 5.1-channel capable, it is one of the best in the market that money can buy. Next up, a pair of Pioneer satellite surround speakers and a centre speaker was added to fulfil the setup’s 5.1-channel capability. When installation was complete, Alan was pleased that a sizeable amount of space was still available in the boot and to switch between setups, all he had to do was just press a button.

So how does it sound? Playing the classic ‘Hotel California’ track from Eagles, the audiophile setup kept in sync with every nuance, every frequency and every note. From the strumming of the guitar, to the beating of the drums, to the husky vocals of Don Henley, the reproduction was stunning and this is also helped by the excellent soundproofing which is a Lexus trademark. Switching to the ‘Broken Arrow’ DVD, and selecting the scene where John Travolta and Christian Slater were flying the B-3 stealth bomber, I could make out the roaring of the B-3’s jets as it whizzed at the speed of sound. I could hear the ‘whoarrr’ sound coming from the front and then fading into the rear! It is not every day that we get the best of both worlds in anything we do but this dual setup in Alan’s RX350, ably put together by Chuan Sing Auto Accessories, proves that you can actually have your cake and eat it.

RALLY, RALLY GOOD! Cody Crocker clinched his second APRC title at the Rally of Indonesia and Carma was there to join in the celebrations

H

Supreme champion Cody secured his second overall title despite having only scored six points and fifth place with a timing of 3:11:15 after a series of hardships that contributed to a slower leg. This still enabled him to hold the lead after a perfect 64 point score from Cody’s first four stints of the 2007 APRC season. The winning time of 3:06:36 was scored by Jussi Valimaki and Jarkko Kalliolepo in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX. “We are all feeling quite

ecstatic really. This weekend has been most critical for the Championship. Although we had a tyre puncture on Day 1 and that cost us some time, what’s most important is that we managed to win the Championship title nonetheless,” said Cody. Cody’s Indonesian team mate Rifat Sungkar, was also hampered by a multitude of tyre punctures, which forced him home into sixth with a time of 3:13:15. “Indonesian roads are known to be very rough for rally cars but

our car was really awesome. The car handling was excellent and the engine was powerful. I was doing well in the first two stages but unfortunately, we met with tyre punctures along the way and that made us lose time,” said Sungkar. “I’d like to congratulate Cody on clinching his second APRC title and doing the Motor Image Rally Team proud in our first year of partnership. It has been an eventful weekend, marked by rough road conditions and obstacles. Yet despite these setbacks, Cody

gathered enough points to secure the overall title” said Glenn Tan, Group Chief Executive, Motor Image Group. For the uninitiated, the Indonesian Rally spans a total distance of 307.77km, spread out over 14 extremely hot (40 degrees Celsius!) stages that take place through expansive plantations. Another unique characteristic is the fine soil and gravel which result in blinding dust clouds, thus impeding visibility and even breathing.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE - THE GROUP N RALLY MACHINE H

A Group N racecar is a moderately modified production class of car that is sanctioned for competitive use. It aim is to provide a more ‘valuefor-money’ avenue for teams to participate in motorsports. Often referred to as the ‘Showroom Class’, Group N racecars are limited to only certain modifications unlike the all-out Group A race machines which compete in the World Rally Championship. In addition, 2,500 cars of the roadgoing version must be built in a year, and a further 25,000 units must be built across the model’s entire range i.e. 2,500 Subaru WRXs and 25,000 ‘normal’ Imprezas (1.6, 2.0, etc).

The Asia Pacific Rally Championship is one such championship to come under the Group N rule of cars. Very few mechanical modifications are permitted to the engine. The lightening of a few minor components and modifications which enhance durability such as baffled oil sumps are allowed. So the swapping of the turbocharger to a larger one is definitely out of the question! However, despite the lack of avenues for ‘power and torque’ modifications, one key area which is allowed is the programming of the ECU (engine control unit). Teams are allowed to reprogramme the ECU any which way they like, thus enabling them to maximise the power and torque.

Other key modification areas which are allowed include: – No restriction on springs and dampers – No restriction on gearbox internals provided that homologated gear ratios and change patterns are met. This is where most teams quickly swap in dog boxes, which provide lightning quick gear changes and longer life of the gearbox. – The suspension and bodyshell may be strengthened, as long as it falls within normal road operating limits.

LIVING, EATING AND BREATHING...RACING Even before the arrival of F1, a local race driver has been making waves in the regional motorsports scene

H

Everything about Hafiz Koh is about being swift and fast. Even our time spent at Performance Motor’s showroom during this interview was over in a ‘flash’ as he had another meeting to run (or drive) off to. That is not to say that this charming and personable young man, who by the way is Singapore’s only full-time professional race driver, is impatient. On the contrary, Hafiz exudes a natural, relaxed confidence which is a definite plus in the high-tension and super-competitive environment of professional motorsports. 1. For the readers who do not know, what is the Formula V6 Asia Series? Formula V6 Asia Series or FV6 Asia, was previously called “World Series by Renault”. It is a stepping stone into F1 for young and talented drivers.

2. How has the season been going so far? It has been a big learning curve for me as this is my first full season in FV6 Asia. Earlier in the season I was having difficulties trying to keep up with the frontrunners but by Rounds 5 and 6 at Sentul Circuit (Indonesia), I was on par with them. The level of competition is very high and you really have to be at the very top of your game to do well. In Round 7 and 8 at Cheng Du Circuit (China), I finished the Sprint Race in 2nd place and earned my very first visit to the podium. This shows how capable Singaporean drivers can be.

Marina Square, as the cars will reach their top speed of over 300km/h!

3. Which team do you drive for? I drive for TaraDTM Racing which is a Singaporean-owned racing team. 4. What is a FV6 Asia racecar? All FV6 Asia cars are built by Renault Sport and they are powered by the same engine - a 3.5-litre, 370bhp, 24-valve, V6 engine, and these speed machines have a top speed of 275km/h. However, the set-up of the car is modifiable and this is the factor that makes FV6 Asia interesting. Drivers, engineers, mechanics and the team manager work together to fine tune the handling of the racecar and this alone can shave up to 4 seconds off a lap. 5. How similar is it to a F1 racecar? Like a F1 racecar, springs are not used with the dampers. Instead, torsion bars which are flexible thick bars are employed and these flex as the car corners. There are also paddle shifters and a finger clutch on the steering wheel. These 3 features alone make a FV6 Asia racecar very similar to a F1 racecar. Last but not least, the dimensions of both cars are very similar.

6. Speaking of F1, what do you think of the street circuit which is going to be used for next year’s F1 Singapore Grand Prix? I drove along the street circuit with members of the press earlier this year and it is actually very wide and safe. It is also very interesting as the circuit passes many famous landmarks such as City Hall, Old Parliament House and the Esplanade. The mix of long straights, hairpins, and fast corners also make it very exciting for both the drivers and spectators. 7.

Which are the best places for overtaking, and hence for watching the race? The turn after the Anderson Bridge, next to the Fullerton Hotel, is possibly one of the best places to overtake. The long and winding section of the circuit along St Andrews Road, running alongside the Padang and City Hall, is also a great place to catch the action as the cars will be accelerating flat out at first and then slowing down as they pass the Singapore Cricket Club. Last but not least, another great place to be will be at Raffles Boulevard, near

8. What are your plans for next year? I will most probably be racing in FV6 Asia again as I am certain that I will have a good chance of winning the championship. However, everything boils down to the amount of sponsorship that I can secure. It is no secret that professional motor racing is a very expensive sport and a lot of money is needed. Hence, sponsorships from large organisations and corporations are very important for the sport to grow and most importantly, for the nurturing and development of local drivers, like myself. I am confident that with the ever-growing public interest in motorsports, more and more companies will come forward and help put Singapore on the world’s motorsports map.

RECORDS TUMBLE ONCE AGAIN EVOs rule the day as Singapore’s drag racers go faster then ever before

H

Drag racing is all about the power and speed of the car, and a good dose of driver instinct and ability. At the recently concluded Round 4 of the MPT Motor Trading Sprint Supersprint, there were fast cars and fast drivers aplenty as records tumbled like bowling pins. The 201m ‘drag strip’ at the National Stadium car park F has long been the home of drag racing in Singapore and thousands gathered on Sunday 4 November to witness our nation’s finest racecars and drivers battle it out for ‘dragging’ rights. EVOs dominated both the Sprint and Supersprint once again and Lester Wong of Garage R fame, ‘gunned’ his EVO 7 superbly to clock a time of 6.72 seconds, and in the process record the fastest time over 201m this year. This garnered him the Fastest

Time of the Year award for the Turbo category. Not to be outdone and outshone, Eddie Ng in his trusty Honda Civic (EG 6), walked away with the NA award with a time of 8.26 seconds which was attained in Round 1 earlier in the year. No one in this Round could get close to Eddie’s time and even Tan Jian Long’s best efforts in his Civic (EK4) could only clock him a time of 8.82 seconds; more than half-a-second of Eddie’s lightning fast timing. As for the rest of the speedsters that participated that day, the Supersprint, which is longer than the Sprint and features a figure-of-8 pattern, provided much excitement for the spectators, and also the drivers themselves!

Class 10 was a three-way battle between Joseph Tan (EVO 9 GT), Ong Tek Wee (EVO 9 GT) and Wong Teck Yew (Civic Ferio EG6). Though less powerful, the lighter Civic, in the expert hands of Teck Yew threatened to upstage the EVO 9 GTs and almost pulled of an upset. It managed a credible time of 104.38 seconds which was less than a second behind the two frontrunners. You could almost hear the collective sigh of relief from Joseph and Tek Wee when Teck Yew’s timing was announced. Teck Yew, however, was not to go home empty-handed as he easily topped Class 10A with a time of 105 seconds. Jason Woo, in his Civic (EG 6), trailed more than 10 seconds in 2nd place. Lester Wong, who already claimed the Sprint title earlier,

put in another awe-inspiring performance and showed that he is equally at home in a series of corners as he is in a straight line. His combined timing of 94.32 seconds was more than 6 seconds faster than what Teck Yew in his EVO 8 MR RS could muster (100.63 seconds). Other notable performances for the day include: Tan Jian Long, Sprint, Class 20A winner, 9.05 seconds; Wong Teck Yew, Sprint, Knockout (NA) winner; and Lester Wong, Sprint, Knockout (Turbo) winner. The MPT Motor Sprint Supersprint 2007 is organised by MPT Motor Trading, with Bridgestone as the Official Tyre, and sanctioned by the Singapore Motor Sports Association.

SEEKING SOLACE FROM THE SUN One of the best in the business tells you all about solar control films

H

Assuming that a car is in perfect working condition, what is the one component in a car that you cannot do without? I wager that most Singaporean drivers would say that it is the airconditioning system. Imagine what it would be like if it broke down and you are caught in a noon day traffic jam? Can you imagine the intense heat and humidity permeating into the cabin and making you sweaty and sticky all over? Hence, keeping the cabin of car, and hence its occupants, cool is a very important aspect of driving comfort. This is also the reason why solar control films are an excellent and essential complement to the air-conditioning system. And the popularity of solar control films is at an all time high. However, like in the case of most popular products and services, there will be ‘wannabes’ trying to make a quick killing in the market, hence you should always stick (pun intended!) with the ones that have been around longer and also have garnered more bouquets

than brickbats. DS Specialty, authorised applicator of 3M Solar Films, is one such company and they have been in business for no less than 6 whole years, at Changi Complex, located along Bedok Road. This is no easy feat but Danny, who runs the company, is very adept at both, the technique of installing the film and the art of explaining to customers what the film can and cannot do. For example, Danny said: “It is a common misconception that once the film is installed, it will keep the cabin cool even after the car has been sitting under the hot sun for hours. This is definitely not true and no film in existence today can do this.” He added: “What a good solar control film can do is reduce the temperature inside the cabin as much as possible, when compared to not installing the film at all.” “This way, my customers are better informed and hence, less unnecessary complaints to attend to.” Danny has had to turn away many customers because they wanted him go their homes

or offices, to install the film on their cars. “I will never do so because despite the fact that 3M films are of the highest quality, they still need to be installed in a controlled environment, like my ‘clean room’, so that their durability and hence, performance is optimised,” he said. Thus far, his good business ethics, coupled with his competence and the quality of 3M films, has seen his customer base grow considerably since the inception of his company. Many of his customers, some driving luxury sports cars like Ferrari and Porsche, have come to know about DS Specialty by word of mouth or through the good reviews he receives in car forums on the web. Danny added: “No job is too small or big for me to handle. And every customer receives the same treatment. Some are so happy that they have even asked me to do up their homes and even offices. Some larger commercial projects I have handled are Scotts Isetan, American School and Hong Leong Building.”

ABOUT 3M FILMS 3M Window Films are designed to: - offer fade protection for the dashboard, seats, and other surfaces - cut annoying glare - reduce up to 99% of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays - reduce excessive heat gain through the glass areas - provide increased comfort and fuel savings - prevent injury from glass fragments in an accident As a leader in both adhesive and film technologies, 3M brings together these disciplines to create the finest products available for residential, commercial, government and automotive use. 3M Window Films provide an elegant, yet practical means for solving many of the most challenging aspects of managing sun control and security issues surrounding the use of your home, car or business.

THE ONLY LINE OF DEFENCE The paintwork is the only thing protecting your car and it deserves protection as well

H

Taking hold of the keys to your new car is truly one of the greatest joys that can be experienced. This set of wheels is after all, most probably the second most expensive item you own after your house or apartment. And like your house or apartment, it is constantly exposed to the weather and environment which will cause wear and tear; especially to the paintwork. The paintwork of a car is like your face. It creates the first impression. And like your face, it will be blemished if it is not cleaned and treated regularly. A good cleanser is enough for your face and until recently, waxing was thought to do the same for the paintwork. But experience has shown that waxing does not last, and in a climate as hot and humid as ours, its breaks down even faster (about 3 car washes or 2 weeks).

Soon, the paintwork is fully exposed to the elements once again and worse still, the ‘brokendown’ wax acts like a magnet, attracting dirt and grime which can potentially damage the paintwork if left uncleaned. The savvier car owners, which know about the pitfalls of using wax, will turn to sealants which do a much better job of staying on longer. But if they do not clean the paintwork surface properly prior to applying the sealant, then the leftover acidic dirt will be trapped and over time, it will ‘eat’ into the paintwork. Does this mean that it is not possible to protect the paintwork of car? Enter Amazing Glaze, and Amazing Glaze AG 5 which is situated at the 4th level of Sin Ming Autocare. The main difference between Amazing Glaze and other grooming products is that it actually protects

the paintwork while the others only serve to make the paintwork look shiny and lustrous while offering little or no protection at all. In other words, Amazing Glaze is a proven paint protection technology system and before we go further into what Amazing Glaze does, let’s find out more about paint. Paint has two purposes - to beautify the car and to prevent the metal from rusting and corroding. The thickness of the original paintwork of a car is roughly that of a strand of hair. With each polish, micro layers of paint are being removed and along with these layers, inhibitors which prevent harmful UV rays from oxidising are also removed as well. Pretty soon, the paintwork will start looking dull and if nothing is done to rectify the situation, rusting and corrosion will rear its ugly head(s). Amazing Glaze works by

permanently bonding with the paintwork instead of merely ‘sitting’ on it. Its nano-sized particles seeks out the pores on the paintwork and ‘seeps’ into these pores and fills them up, leaving no room whatsoever for other foreign particles and pollutants. After curing, a super-durable layer is formed which almost impervious to anything Mother Nature and Father Sky can throw at it. Acid rain, road tar, dirt and grime, can all be easily removed with a

wash with car shampoo followed by a rinse with water. Amazing Glaze is so good that major commercial airlines companies use it on their entire fleet of aircraft. Imagine the stresses which the paintwork of these aircraft are subjected to each time they fly - extreme cold, direct and unfiltered sunlight while cruising at high altitudes (30,000 feet), and intense heat while parked under the hot sun. Furthermore, anti-freeze solution

Before

is constantly sprayed directly on the paintwork on the wings to prevent the controls and mechanisms from freezing. Amazing Glaze not only protects the paintwork despite these factors but it does so effectively. So much so that it is able to increase the lifespan of the paintwork buy a few years which amounts to thousands of dollars saved.

ABOUT AMAZING GLAZE Amazing Glaze is the first paint protection system officially certified by BOEING and AIRBUS and employed exclusively by United Airlines in 1993. It proved to be so effective that British Airways, Lufthansa, Qantas, and many others, authorises its usage on their entire fleet. Each airplane costs $800,000 to fully respray and the paintwork wears down after 4 years due to weathering. With the help of Amazing Glaze, this figure is now closer to 8 years. A good example of the durability of Amazing Glaze is when the Concorde flew for British Airways and Air France. This super-fast airplane flies at supersonic speeds which generate high amounts of heat on the exterior surfaces as a result of air resistance. Despite this heat, which would otherwise ‘melt’ the paint, Amazing Glaze ensured that the paintwork was not harmed at all.

The Reasons why cars’ paint turn Dull & Oxidize?

AG5 NanoTech Amazing Glaze paint protection technology is the only proven and certified technology used today by renowned major commercial Airlines, Marines and the Automobile industry. AMAZING GLAZE products’ technology is certified by BOEING and AIRBUS Industries. There is NO other product in the market that could ever match our impressive accolades/records.

Facts: Today’s cars’ paints are formulated with very advanced materials that give its glossy shine. Unfortunately, these paints properties are not acid resistant and it is not covered under the manufacturers’ paints warranty. In as early as two (2) months, your car paint’s will oxidize, and turn dull with watermarks spots formations on the painted surfaces because the car paint are being attack by daily acidic pollutants from the environments like acid rain, tree sap, bird droppings, Sun’s harmful Ultra violet rays, exhaust fumes, salty air element, industrial fallout, etc. AG5 NanoTECH AMAZING GLAZE is the only proven technology that was specially designed for the UNITED AIRLINES in year 1993, to prevent such harsh acidic pollutants attacks by providing an acid & UV resistant protective coating on top of the painted surfaces that would STOP acidic pollutants from coming into direct contact with paints’ molecular properties thus prevents paints from damages and oxidation. And today many commercial airlines like BRITISH AIRWAYS, QANTAS, LUFTHANSA, etc are adopting AMAZING GLAZE paint protection programme. AMAZING GLAZE paint protection is truly beneficial for brand new cars, especially BLACK colour. AMAZING GLAZE paint preparation and restoration. With 9 years “hands-on” experiences, there is no oxidized/dull paint that we cannot restore to brand new “showroom shine” conditions. Our expert preparation & restoration polishing skills will even transform brand news cars to better than “showroom” conditions.

We are experts in the restoration of black coloured cars (no matter how bad the paint conditions may be). NOTE: There is no “Shortcut” method in our paint preparation and restoration processes. Warranty (3 years protection warranty program) Once your car paint are protected with AG5 Nanotech Amazing Glaze, all you have to do to maintain its “showroom” shine condition is only to shampoo-wash your car (recommended twice a week) and dry off with our recommended micro fiber cloth that will significantly reduces hairlines scratches. AS GOOD AS NEW Once again, you can get great ‘bargains’ from used car dealers, as Jason discovers

ABOUT TRANSFER OF VEHICLE

H

Used car dealers.

Now, this is a term that has not been often heard in recent times as new cars have been all the rage the last few years. These cars are now a few years old and many have found their way into the hands of these used car dealers. So the time is right to go hunting again for a pre-owned bargain. And who knows, you may end up with a gem like the pristine 2004 Honda Odyssey you see here. Right until last month, this nicely maintained MPV used to sit in the showroom of Empire 90, a reputed seller of used cars, located in Concorde Shopping Centre at Outram Road.

It is now in the hands of Jason, a 39-year old who is married with two kids and doing sales. He used to drive a BMW 323i but he had been eyeing the Odyssey for some time now as he had always wanted to own a seven-seat MPV. “I was looking for a seven-seat MPV or SUV and I have always liked the Odyssey. But a salesman at the authorised distributor told me that a newer version is coming soon and the price he quoted was beyond my budget, so I decided to scout around for a used one which was still similar to the current version” he said. “Based on my calculations, I would be saving quite a sum of money in depreciation if I chose to buy a used Odyssey and I still it find it handsome and great to drive, with

more than enough space for me and my family.” Last October, he was recommended by a good friend to give Empire 90 a try and one weekend, he went down to their showroom to have a look. “A sales executive named Andy greeted me and I asked him about the used Odyssey I saw advertised on their website. He then proceeded to show me the car and once I was satisfied with it, I began doing a little ‘negotiating. Have to get the best deal right? Once the price was agreed, the necessary paperwork was completed like clockwork and all I had to do was wait for the day when I collected the car. It was that easy,” he enthused. “ Andy also kept me constantly updated on the status of my car like the transfer details, loan application status and insurance costs. And when the day came for me to collect my Odyssey, he handled the handing over process with consummate ease and ensured that everything was done properly; right down to the smallest detail.” He summed: “I have been driving my car since last month and everything has been great. The engine is in great shape like Andy promised and all in all, it was a straightforward and pleasant process and I will surely be recommending them to my friends and relatives.” Like I said, a satisfied customer.

NOT FAST ENOUGH? Dress up and ‘power up’ your Continental ride here

H

You’ve just signed the papers to your new Mercedes-Benz SLK. It looks good, performs even better and is an absolute chick magnet to boot. Then along comes a silly boy racer in one of those, oh lets say, 500-odd horsepower Mitsubishi Lancer Evolutions and makes a total mess of you and your drop top. Maybe you don’t want this to happen. Maybe you want to keep up with those corner happy WRXs and EVOs, or maybe you want something even more out of your German pride and joy. Enter KBS Motorsport. Conveniently located on the ground floor of Sin Ming Autocare, they are one of the biggest and most reputable workshops around. They share their premises with sister company MBM Wheelpower, which concentrates on aftermarket support for parallel imported cars, leasing of vehicles, body works, claims and vehicle maintenance using original equipment purchased directly from the original carmakers. In reality, they are a dedicated group of people that specialize

in accessories and serious, performance enhancing tune-up parts for continental cars such as Mercedes, BMW, Volkswagen and Audi (to name a few). There are some huge brand names behind the seemingly innocuous façade of this tuning outfit. They pack all under one roof, one of the biggest names in aftermarket performance enhancement for your continental pride and joy. AC Schnitzer, AMG, ABT Sportsline, Breyton, Brabus, H&R, Carlsson, Sachsm Kleeman and parts from BMW’s original M sport division are just a few to start with. They are also the exclusive distributor for HAMANN and KLEEMANN automotive products in both Singapore and the Malaysian region. A few ‘powerful’ examples of what they do? Take for instance, an already powerful Mercedes-Benz CLK55. In stock form, the engine produces 354hp and up to 530 Newton metres of torque. Throw in then, monstrous components such as a Kleeman

Kompressor, which essentially is a roots type supercharger kit, full exhaust modifications from AMG, modified camshafts, strengthened pistons, an LSD and other supporting modifications such as a bigger fuel pump, additional water pumps and cooling. The result? A terrifying, but extremely reliable 500hp and 650Nm. Scary. It is another well known fact that despite the huge amounts of power and torque put out from these aftermarket tuned vehicles, they prove to be extremely tough and reliable in the long run, thanks to obsessive-compulsive German ‘over engineered’ engines and meticulous attention from the extensively trained mechanics over at the workshop. In addition to earth shattering modifications, KBS realizes the importance of looking good while you’re going at it, hence a complete lineup of bodykits from the abovementioned brands.

ABOUT KLEEMAN’S WORLD RECORDS In addition to building some of the world’s most luxurious and exclusive Mercedes-Benz cars KLEEMANN also build exciting high-performance vehicles. A point clearly underlined when KLEEMANN clinched two world records as the fastest streetlegal sedan and SUV. KLEEMANN sets extremely high quality standards for all of our products and the two world records show the enormous potential of the KLEEMANN Kompressor and engine tuning programme. In 2002 Danish race driver Jason Watt drove 338 km/t (210 mph) in a 607 Hp KLEEMANN E 55 K (W210) making it the world’s fastest four-door saloon car and less than a year later a KLEEMANN tuned ML 55 K clocked a remarkable 282 km/h (175 mph) on Nardo in southern Italy.

‘SOLAR WARRIORS’ BATTLE IT OUT One of the best solar control films available challenges a competitor to the test

H

As one of the pioneers in the solar control film industry, VKOOL has continued to stay in front of the competition when it comes to solar control film technology and customer satisfaction. Ask around and you will find many car owners that are happy and satisfied with the performance of V-KOOL films. With such a respected name in the industry, V-KOOL could be forgiven for wanting to rest on its laurels but this is definitely not the case. Recently, they tasked the Eureka Lab, Technical Department of Novomatrix Pte Ltd to conduct a test whereby the cabin temperatures of two identical Nissan Cefiros were measured over a span of two days. The difference between the cars? One was installed with V-KOOL and the other was installed with solar control film from a popular competitor (Brand M).

The test was conducted on the top floor of Eunos Technolink at Kaki Bukit Road 1 and the cars were parked side by side in the open from 12.15pm on Wednesday 10 October to 3.15pm on Thursday 11 October. There was a break between 5.25pm (Wed) and 10.55am (Thu), where the intensity of the sun was at a minimum. On Wednesday, the air-conditioning systems of both cars, which were preset to the same temperature and blower settings, were switched on from 4.55pm to 5.25pm for a total of 30 minutes and the same procedure was done on Thursday from 2.42pm to 3.12pm. Two digital temperature loggers were placed in the cabin of each car – one was hung from the driver’s sun visor (where the driver’s head would be) and the other was hung from the handle of the left rear seat (where the left rear passenger would be) and the temperatures were logged throughout the two days.

86

86-87SecialreportVkool.indd 86

27/11/2007 12:47:03 AM

TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCE Comparing the corresponding front and rear temperatures of both cars, it was observed that the average temperature in the car installed with Brand M films is between 1 and 2°C higher than that of the car installed with V-KOOL films. Although this may not seem like much but from our daily driving experiences, we are aware that a 22°C temperature setting feels very different in ‘coolness’ from a setting of 24°C.

HEATING RATES Temp Range Temp Diff V-KOOL Front V-KOOL Rear M Front M Rear

Wed 10 Oct 45.3°C – 59.8°C 14.5°C 73 min 71 min 70 min 60 min

Thu 11 Oct 36.1°C – 50.1°C 14.0°C 22 min 22 min 20 min 11 min

On the first day, it took the front of the V-KOOL installed car 3 minutes less to heat up from 45.3°C to 59.8°C than the Brand M installed car. When comparing the rear, the V-KOOL installed car took a mindboggling 11 minutes longer to heat up than the Brand M-installed car. The second day yielded similar results with the time difference at 2 and 11 minutes. This meant that an item, like a child seat, would be significantly hotter after you have left the car parked for an hour in the scorching sunshine.

COOLING RATES Temp Range Temp Diff V-KOOL Front V-KOOL Back M Front M Rear

Wed 10 Oct 61.2°C – 46.8°C 14.4°C 29 min 26 min 41 min 33 min

Thu 11 Oct 52.9°C – 40.1°C 12.8°C 48 min 44 min 62 min 54 min

On the second day, there was hardly any cloud cover so the temperatures were generally high throughout the day. Thus we could only use the readings obtained on the first day. For the cooling rates, the shorter the time it took for the temperatures to come down, the better the performance of the film. The cabin of the car with V-KOOL film took 29 minutes (front) and 26 minutes (back) to cool down by 14.4°C, while the Brand M installed car required 41 and 33 minutes respectively to do so. Later on the first day, it took the V-KOOL installed car 48 and 44 minutes to cool down from 52.9°C to 40.1°C, while the Brand M installed car took 62 and 54 minutes respectively. In a real world situation, this meant that even when you get into your V-KOOL-installed car in the evening, it would take 14 minutes faster to feel cooler and more comfortable than the one installed with Brand M.

ABOUT SOLAR CONTROL FILMS SOLAR RADIATION In the morning, when the sun is at an angle (from the east), it tends to shine right throughout the cabin of the car. In such cases, even before the sun’s rays can heat up the cabin, the driver and passengers are already subjected to direct solar radiation i.e. direct heating of the skin. Hence, direct solar radiation was also measured for both cars (front) and logged by a pyranometer, which is a device with a specific sensor to measure solar radiation from a field view of 180 degrees. The average solar radiation that was transmitted through the windscreen of the car installed with Brand M film was more than 3 times that of the V-KOOL fitted car.

CONCLUSION As can be inferred from the results of the test, the V-KOOL film far outperforms the Brand M film with the following desirable benefits: Cooler cabin temperature More comfortable occupants Reduced wear-and-tear of the air-conditioning system; Improved fuel efficiency

Solar control films have become a necessity in our tropical climate. So much so that even car distributors and dealers are offering them as standard items with every new car purchase. A good solar film will not only keep the interior of your car cool thereby reducing stress on the airconditioning system, it will also help to keep petrol bills down and in this day and age, where rising oil prices are the norm, this will help you save money in the long run. However, as a result of this increased popularity, there are now many brands of solar control films available in the market and installation centres are sprouting faster than you can say: “Is it really that hot in here?” Hence you have to very meticulous when choosing a solar control film.

96 go-karters from various walks of life competed in the Caltex National Karting Challenge 2007 held at East Coast Park in October and emerging winners in the 4 age group categories were students, engineers, businessmen, managers and flight-attendants. SPedyz GOnZaleZ, a team of eighteen-year-old students, walked away with the first position in Category A (15-18 years). Winning Category B (19-25 years) was Team Apex, a group of four youngsters who came together for this challenge, just about a month ago. Speaking on behalf of Team IntegRaSG, winners of Category C (26 – 35 years), said engineer Charles Teo, “we met each other at a car club and we just thought it would be interesting to contest together as a team.” Last but not least, winners of the 36 years and above Category D were the Vipers, with the eldest contestant aged 55 years. Gracing the event was Guest-ofHonour, Mr S Iswaran, Minister of State for Trade and Industry, who also gamely participated in the “Special Guests Friendly” with well-known faces from AXN Asia and ESPN Star Sports.

HONOURING THE SCUDO The Fiat Scudo has just been voted “International Van of the Year 2008” after scoring 108 out of a possible 140 points from a panel of journalists from 20 European nations. The panel was particularly impressed by the mechanicals of the vehicle, which were also designed with passenger versions in mind. This means a suspension offering exceptional comfort, in addition to superior agility, handling, driveability and safety. This is all thanks to a bodyshell with differentiated rigidity zones, a new braking system with 4 disc brakes, ABS and EBD and a driver side airbag (standard throughout the range). Additionally, depending on the market and version, the Scudo is offered with ESP complete with ASR, front passenger airbag, side bags and window bags and anti-theft systems for the vehicle and load.

OUR VERY OWN RACE CIRCUIT

AWARD-WINNING ODYSSEY

The Singapore Government has announced that it will be developing the motorsports industry in Singapore by working with the private sector to build a permanent race track located in Changi and developing a comprehensive motorsports industry development plan. The race track will be a Grade 2 FIA-approved race track capable of hosting motorcycle and car races. It will also include a Grade 1 FIA-CIK-approved karting track. The length of the race track is likely to be between 2.8 km to 3.5 km or more, depending on the individual designs put forth by the bidders. Proposed events include at least 3 international races per year; two of which must be Grade 2 level race, and at least two national series a year. A Request for Proposal for the permanent race track, which is to be located on a 20-hectare plot with a tenure of 30 years, is expected to go out in May 2008. The race track is expected to be completed by end 2010 / early 2011.

LIGHTS ON FOR F1 IN SINGAPORE Singapore GP Pte Ltd has signed a letter of intent with Italy-based Valerio Maioli S.p.a. to design and construct the lighting system for the Formula 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix. Two lighting tests have already been conducted at the Paul Ricard High Tech Test Track in Le Castellet, France, and no complications were reported by the test observers or the drivers involved. The proposed system was then presented to the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) in Paris on the 10 October 2007. Under the proposed system, the entire track will be fitted with nearly 1,500 lighting projectors and will be powered by 12 twin-power generators. An overall average of about 3000lux levels is required to illuminate the circuit, which is enough to meet High Definition Television broadcast standards. As a result, the track will be almost four times brighter than a typical stadium.

‘SINGAPORE’ SUBARU WINS APRC TEAM TITLE Defending champion Cody Crocker of the Motor Image Rally Team has clinched the top spot at the final leg of the Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC) 2007 at Longyou, China. Crocker and co-driver Ben Atkinson had already won the APRC 2007 driver and co-driver titles respectively and only needed to cross the start-line at the China leg of the Rally in order to be crowned champions. This is their

H

second win in a row, having first won the title in 2006. Despite treacherous road conditions, the Australian duo put on an outstanding performance to win the China Rally with a time of 03:28:03. Crocker’s final overall point tally was 86, giving him a 37 point lead over closest rival, Jussi Valimaki of MRF Tyres. The victory was made all the

sweeter with the Motor Image Rally Team’s clinching of the much sought-after Manufacturer’s Title. A mere two points had separated Subaru and Mitsubishi after the Rally of Indonesia in September but Crocker’s podium-finish at the China Rally gave Subaru an additional 16 points, giving it the winning edge over Mitsubishi with a final tally of 90 points

Pro Fizion Fully Synthetic Engine Oil with polyol Ester (Group V) is a new revolution lubricant developed through nano technology. This new revolution oil contains Metal Fortifying Compound which impregnate metallurigically by the piston chamber at its mating friction surfaces. The metallurigical process creates a protection layer where the metal surfaces come into contact to each other. As a result of the Metal Fortifying Compound, friction will substantially be reduced and so does the engine wear. This will lead to major reduction of noise, vibration and great improvement of the engine stability.

“Our Paint Protection Saves you money” After your house, your car is probably the second biggest investment you will ever make. So doesn’t it make sense to look after your investment? If you buy any car price guide, you will see that the difference in price between a car in poor condition and a car in excellent condition can run into thousands of dollar services, and regular maintenance can help to keep your car in excellent condition. CS – II paint protection is not an expense, it’s an investment.

Q

A

What is the diferrent between CS-II Paint Preservation System and ordinary wax?

Q

Is is so good why do i need CSII Cleaner?

Q

The CS-II Paint Preservation System can last up to at least 18 months.

Q

Do I need to come back for recoating within the warranty period?

A

You do not need to recoat it as this could last you a long time, so long as you regularly use the Cleaner (preservation solution) to upkeep your vehicle.

Q

What are the best way to wash CSII coated surface?

Q

Why can’t I use CS-II Paint Preservation System Paint Sealant on a vehicle myself?

A

The application is a system including a series of steps, chemicals and special equipment that requires training.

What happens after the 18/24 month, do we still need to re-applied?

A

Under normal circumstances, up to 70% of the PTFE original protection will still be remaining on the paint. The old PTFE protection can be professionally removed and the product reapplied at any time.

Q

Should I applied CS-II Paint Preservation on my car when it is new or several month later? Prevention is better than cure. It would be better to get it coated when your car is still new cause it is less oxidize. It helps to protect your paint as it act as a barrier coat to your car.

CSII - Dec07.indd 83

A

While the CS-II Paint Preservation System will remain on the painted surface and continue to offer protection to the paint, road film, detergent residue, tree sap, etc will collect on top of the finish and reduce the paint’s gloss. CSII Cleaner is designed to remove these soils and return the finish to its original gloss. CSII Cleaner may be purchased from us.

A

A

How long will a CS-II Paint Preservation System last on my car?

A

Use a small amount of mild car wash with water. Sponge wash, then dry with a soft/damp cloth or chamois. Road tar, bugs, industrial contamination, bird droppings must be removed as soon as possible.

Q

Q

CS-II Paint Preservation System is the only paint sealant that contains sufficient quantities of “crystalline PTFE” to protect a painted surface. Crystalline PTFE unique qualities (a) it is the most corrosion resistant material made by man and (b) it has the ability to “lock” into the pores of the paint without drifting off or through the painted surface like ordinary sealants and waxes will.

Can I add wax or polish my vehicle?

A

Liquid polishes and waxes contain solvents that can remove the brighteners and/or drift into the deep layers of the paint. For these reasons they are not recommended. While pasted wax will not harm the finish and temporarily add to the paint’s gloss, it will not afford the paint any additional protection.

Q

What about scratches or marks on my paint?

A

Very fine scratches may be corrected with the use of CSII Cleaner as directed. Heavier scratches must receive professional attention. In some cases, where the scratch has removed the majority of the paint, you may want to ask us for touch up paint.

CONTEST & PROMO

2 ADM AIR CHARGER2 VALUED AT $680 EACH ARE YOURS TO WIN!

To win one ADM Air Charger2, simply answer the following question and send in your completed form by 31 December 2007 to: CARMA / AUTODESIGNS DEC PROMOTION Locked Bag 58, Macpherson Road Post Office, Singapore 913486

The ADM Air Charger 2 is an electrically driven Supercharger that forces more air into the engine increasing the engine efficiency. By allowing the engine to have access to more air easily, the engine will increase its power and torque output. The ADM Air Charger 2 is a variable speed system which has a separate electronic controller to monitor the engine load and vary the blower speed to match the engine load. As it is a variable speed system, the ADM Air Charger 2 will provide significant torque gains even at engine speeds below 4000 rpm where most drivers spend their time. Because the ADM Air Charger 2 does not require major modifications to the air intake system, installation will take less than an hour. The ADM Air Charger 2 takes up about 15 amps of current and will flow more than 500 CFM Cubic Feet of Air Per Minute even at 2000rpm when it detects a high engine load.

Question: How much CFM of air can the ADM Air Charger2 supply?
