Ways to Travel Smart this Holiday Season Follow these simple steps for a stress-free vacation.

1

SHIP AHEAD

The Christmas countdown has begun and you’ve got a long shopping list. The question is: how do you bring them all on board without incurring a hefty excess-baggage fee? One way is to ship your purchases separately. Alternatively, you can get your gifts online and have the retailers ship them to the recipient. Many retailers offer free shipping (or reduced rates) on orders to domestic addresses. To sweeten the deal, some offer exclusive discounts on online purchases that you can’t get in stores.

2

HAPPY CHILDREN = A LESS STRESSFUL TRIP

Traveling with young children can be a challenge, especially when there are unexpected delays. Bring along some of their favorite books, toys (avoid games with small parts as you will lose them along the way) and snacks in your carry-on luggage to keep them occupied during longhaul flights. Check ahead if the airline offers any children's programs, if not a portable DVD could be a good thing to bring along.

3 4

Security checks can be a tedious process. Don’t make them even more so by unwittingly flouting security rules. Make sure that you carry liquids, aerosols and gels in containers with a capacity not larger than 100ml, and that they are stored in a transparent, re-sealable plastic bag.

PACE YOURSELF

The holiday season is one of the busiest travel periods in the calendar, so be prepared for long queues and overbooked flights. If you have an engagement that you absolutely have to attend, it’s best to reach your destination at least one day in advance instead of on the day itself, since there’s no guarantee that your flight won’t be delayed. Several airlines offer online checkins, which is a great way to reduce the time spent queuing up at the airport. Also, if you have travel insurance, check that it covers flight delays.

RESPECT AIRPORTSECURITY RULES

5

CONTINGENCY PLANNING

Scan a copy of all your important documents like your passport, identification card and travel-insurance certificate, and e-mail them to your own address. This way, all is not lost even if you misplace the originals.

CRACKERS

Yule love it. Snow, Santa, storybook scenes and a menagerie of fantastic beasts ring in Christmas, from Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2009—850 trends, destinations, journeys and experiences for the year ahead. We give you the highlights.

REINDEER RACE, NORWAY When rock-and-roller Chuck Berry belted out Run, Run Rudolph, he surely had these guys in mind. On a bitterly cold morning in February, Tromsø hosts its annual reindeer-racing championships, where the locals compete on a short course through snowy streets. North of the Arctic Circle, between the frosted Norwegian fjords and peaks, the setting is pure winter wonderland. The hot breath of the reindeer as they gallop at speeds of up to 60km to the finish line, the swoosh of skis and the cheering crowds make for a wildly exciting event.

GENGENBACH ADVENT CALENDAR, GERMANY Remember the anticipation of opening those tiny windows in the countdown to Christmas? Set in the enchanting Black Forest, Gengenbach conjures up such childhood memories when its Rathaus (town hall) morphs into one of the world’s largest Advent calendars. Every evening at 6pm, one of its 24 windows opens to reveal a festive scene painted by artists or children’s-book illustrators, such as Tomi Ungerer. The giant calendar can be admired until Epiphany (6 January) and is complemented by carol singing, brass bands and a twinkling Christmas market for a gluhwein pick-me-up. — Extract from Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2009. 04

SANTA CLAUS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS, SWITZERLAND Picture the scene: a sleepy village in the Swiss Alps, a thick blanket of snow and 100 pseudo-Santas in all their red-cloaked glory. On the first weekend in December, Father Christmas wannabees descend on Samnaun to vie for the coveted title of world’s best Santa. This is no mean feat, with disciplines that include climbing a 5m chimney schlepping a sack full of pressies, delivering gifts by donkey, decorating gingerbread and horn-sled sprinting. It’s an utterly bonkers event for getting into the Christmas groove with Santa, schnapps and a helluva lot of ho-ho-ho-ing.

Room Service on the Go

Dreaming of a Green Christmas As the world is becoming more environmentally conscious, organizations and environmental groups are adopting eco-friendly festive initiatives. One group has even gone as far as renting out live Christmas trees. The Original Living Christmas Tree Company (livingchristmastrees.org) in Portland, Oregon rents firs out for a fee and then replants them so your tree can enjoy a new lease of life out in the open after the festivities.

Hottest Toys for Christmas

Changing Times

Which toy will top this year’s “Most Wanted” list? The answer’s still up in the air, but that hasn’t stopped leading retailers and toy manufacturers such as Toys ’R’ Us, Hamleys and Toyworld from releasing their own Top 10 lists. Over in the US, Elmo Live is touted as one of the season’s hottest toys. The most lifelike version of the Sesame Street character made so far, the little muppet can tell stories and jokes, and sing and play games—just like the real thing.

Given the current state of the economy, it’s no wonder people are tightening their belts and reining in extravagant purchases. Some savvy retailers are turning the situation to their advantage and giving shoppers a reason to smile. US discount retailer Target has teamed up with more than 20 leading designers like Anya Hindmarch and Sigerson Morrison to offer cheap and chic buys that won’t break the bank. Retail prices for the latter’s shoe collection usually start from US$200 (S$301) but Target shoppers will be able to pick up a pair of designer heels from US$29.99-US$39.99 (S$45-S$60).

The iPod has revolutionized the way people listen to music. Now it looks like they’re changing the way hotels run their business too. Runtriz, a Los Angeles-based software firm has come up with "Hotel Evolution", a web-based program that allows users to access a hotel’s services on their iPods or iPhones. Guests can either get the program installed on their devices or borrow an iPod with the pre-installed program from the hotel for the duration of their stay. After that, they can order room service, rent a limousine, arrange for a wake-up call, set their room to "Do Not Disturb" and access information on attractions and nightlife venues. "Hotel Evolution" made its debut at luxury SoCal hotel, the Malibu Beach Inn, earlier in October.

Leaving on a Jet plane Talk about flying in style. Swiss company LunaJets (www.lunajets.com) is offering passengers the opportunity to fly on a private jet. Travelers can book single seats (for flights up to two-and-a-half hours) or the entire cabin. Prices are fixed according to the flight’s duration. An hour-long flight, for instance, costs ¤890 (S$1670, inclusive of fuel, catering and landing fees) and you get a discount if you book three seats or more. Booking an entire cabin for a three-hour long flight will set you back ¤10,000 (S$18,875).

LIVE A BALLET FAIRYTALE

GRAND OLD DAME OF HISTORY

A fairytale comes to life in this gorgeous performance of The Nutcracker Ballet staged by the Singapore Dance Theatre (SDT), which will captivate the audience with its mesmerizing tale of wonder and adventure. It is a night when dolls come alive, mice dance and young Clara is transported to a fantasy land after being given a beautifullycrafted nutcracker doll on Christmas Eve. Exquisite costumes and stellar choreography make it a hit with grown-ups looking to relive their childhood. With an alternating cast of 200 dancers, eye-catching projections and animated backdrops and stage sets, this is one Christmas extravaganza that will hold both adults and kids in thrall.

Get a glimpse of Singapore’s past at the National Museum of Singapore. Don’t be fooled by Singapore’s youth—the country’s history, while brief, is a rich, diverse one. Established in 1887, the grand old dame was given a makeover and reopened in December 2006 with refurbished interiors and a contemporary annex. Visit the Singapore Living Galleries, which feature local food, fashion, film and wayang (Chinese street opera) and photography. Marvel at historical artifacts dating from the 14th century, some of which were unearthed from nearby Fort Canning Hill, or take in a movie at the Cinematheque. A Man Called Claus Going in search of the jolly red gent is an exciting yet challenging task. Text by Glenn A. Baker The Finns would certainly never be demanding about it but, just the same, they would like the world outside their borders to note a change of address. Santa Claus, contrary to common perception, does not reside at or near the North Pole. Thoughtfully, the jolly red gent left a forwarding address: Rovaniemi FIN-96930, Arctic Circle, Finland. Which is just as well, given that he receives and answers over a million letters a year, from children in more than 50 countries. Even those addressed to the North Pole manage to find their way into the Finnish postal system in time for a reply before the tinsel is taken down for another year. The scale of the operation is underlined by the fact that Santa has his own post office and postmark, and receives a substantial stamp allowance from the government, along with 50 helpers. In fact, the internal Finnair service, which bears visitors from Helsinki into the Arctic Circle city of Rovaniemi sports his visage prominently on the aircraft fuselages and tailfins, leaving no doubt at all that the upper half of Finland, at least in December, is Santa Claus Land. It is, of course, a great deal more. The immense allure of this part of the Arctic Circle was drawing visitors well before Santa's relocation. This is the glossiest and most seductive travel brochure come to life. Snowcovered from October, it is one of the world's premier winter wonderlands; an accessible; enveloping realm of fells and cliffs, reindeer and sled-dogs, shimmering ice crystals and snow-laden pine trees, and myriad winter sports carried on in the blue-tinged winter night, which occupies all but a few hours of each day. It is perhaps best known as the training ground for the very best Olympic downhill skiers, who hone their skills on the severe slopes of Ounasvaara, which rises from the banks of the Kemijoki River. But it was not for the world's most

adventurous and visually edifying skiing that I landed myself in Rovaniemi a few days into a new year. I came at the behest of the eternal child inside us all; I came to give life to a dream of longstanding. I wanted to meet Santa and discuss affairs of state.

"I wanted to meet Santa and discuss affairs of state." My expedition began in the midst of Rovaniemi, the heart of what has been termed "the most civilized wilderness in the world", at a snowmobile base. Here I donned plastic thermal overalls, moonboots, heavy gloves, a balaclava and hood and headed north along the surface of the frozen Kemijoki. If I was about to revisit my childhood, I couldn't have wanted a better preparatory playground. With this vast, wide river virtually to myself I left a joyful wake of doughnuts, zigzags and snow crest crashthroughs, stopping only to drill a hole in the thick ice cover for a spot of fruitless fishing. A detour from the Kemijoki an hour after leaving base deposited my party in a Lapp reindeer farm; the sort of impossibly perfect visual panorama that used to be painted on the lids of chocolate boxes and biscuit tins. There are only 2,500 real Lapps (the aboriginal Sámi people) in this part of the world, well outnumbered by 200,000 reindeer. A Lapp's relationship with his reindeer herd is not dissimilar to a Bedouin tribesman's bond to his camels. The noble beast provides warmth, labor, nourishment and transport, and is integral to the survival of the Sámi people. Indeed, when I arrived at the stable compound just off the Kemijoki, the finest specimens were arrayed for maximum emotional and aesthetic effect. They were all on hand—Prancer, Dancer and Rudolph, Dasher, Donner and Blitzen, the

whole team. The fulfillment of my dream was so near I could almost touch it. Surreptitiously, I checked their hooves for signs of scuffed roof tiles. After a round of welcoming rituals, we were off dashing through the snow. Not so much in a one-horse open sleigh as a humble three-reindeer sled sans handgrips. Perched precariously in the centre of a reindeer hidecovered wood pallet, I clung to any finger-hold I could find as I was hurled through a total white-out world at a dizzying, exhilarating velocity. Back at the farm a genial, considerate Lapp grandmother, who could have been Mrs. Claus, was thoughtfully preparing me a dish of sautéed reindeer with crushed cloudberries. On my return I hesitated but a moment before this unexpected repast; tracking down Santa would require a full stomach, even if it was full of the very beasts who had borne me so majestically. Nailing down old Saint Nick is often more a matter of good fortune than forward planning. As it eventuated, my hunt reached its conclusion at Santa Claus' Village at Rovaniemi. Led into his presence by a rather fetching blonde elf called Kirsi, I was put at ease instantly by an easy affability which, I was to discover, can be dispensed in some 20 languages. I'd hardly had a chance to assure

Japan, Poland, Australia, West Germany, Italy, the United States and England. The Brazilians are now coming on strong as well. He had recently received a single missive from Liberia and barely double figures from Romania, though its rate has steadily risen, like that of all its neighboring countries, since the political changes that swept Eastern Europe after the fall of the Wall. Even Cuban kiddies seem to have found his address.

him that I had indeed been a good boy all year and that I just happened to have a list of my computer hardware needs in my inside pocket, when he bravely plonked me down on his knee and proffered, of all things, a business card. Long and slender, it introduced him by his Finnish name, Joulupukki, neatly fashioned into a logo with the J appearing as a well-stuffed Christmas stocking. Santa, as fatigued as he must have been by his December duties, was a gracious and illuminating host, with a quick wit and a ready recall of interesting statistics concerning his mail deluge. It seems that children of Finland send him the most letters, followed by those of

Most of the letter writers are around 10 years old, although the British average is five to seven, and the Japanese spectrum ranges from infancy well into adulthood. The tone of the letters varies dramatically from countryto-country. While the children of most western nations hopefully trot out a log of claims, others wouldn't dream of bothering him with their materialistic desires; they just want to transmit their greetings and even confide in him their fears of war and disaster and their hopes for a peaceful world. "Japanese children don't want presents," Santa revealed, "they just want to tell me things about themselves and the world. They tell me they love me." Santa may be old but, as Finland Post's Philatelic Centre boasts he isn't too old fashioned to get wired. Parents and grandparents throughout the globe now arrange for him to add their little darlings to his mailing list by e-mailing him at www.santaclaus.posti. fi a few months out from the silly season. For a wee fee a small present is included with the ornate illustrated card. My own children, duly impressed that I had landed an interview of far greater significance than any mere rock or film star, were less than patient over the next year in eager anticipation of their own. The world does beat a path to his door. There are usually a couple of television crews wandering about, preparing stories for countries still relatively new to the Santa saga—such as India, Taiwan, Thailand and China. Joulupukki is not unaware of his influence for good in a strife-torn world. He has met with the Pope, once spoke on Soviet television at the personal request of Mikhail Gorbachev, and personally greeted more starry-eyed children than a calculator could tally. A decade or so ago he welcomed to his headquarters a 16-year-old Australian girl called Trudy Davis who was soon to undergo intricate brain surgery in Switzerland. When I asked him about his effect on the young and more than a few of the not-so-young, Santa gave a humble smile, a momentary shrug and said, "I hope I can do things that make people happy."

Mystique Factor: Arriving in Tibet takes your breath away. It is, after all, the roof of the world, at an average elevation of 4,900 meters, and at first sight looks like a set from a Hollywood movie. An autonomous region of China, its spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, has attracted much controversy. To experience the real Tibet, it’s necessary to delve deeper into the region and soak up its cultural offerings, before development gradually threatens to erode the authenticity of the place. Sitting on the slopes of the Himalayas, the capital Lhasa is a good starting point from which to experience the richness of Tibet. While tourism’s double-edged sword has brought about modern amenities and influences, it also reinforces the need to preserve historical districts of the city, like the old quarters around Barkhor. In the eastern part of Lhasa, the region’s colorful past comes to life through architectural landmarks like Jokhang Temple, Potala Palace and Norbulingka Summer Palace, which hold centuries of history. Don’t Miss: Spend time outside Jokhang Temple in the morning observing Buddhist pilgrims who have been prostrating for months to reach the temple. Wander through the Barkhor Street market nearby. It is one of the oldest streets, where local vendors hawking handicrafts can be found. Getting There: Do enough research to have a glitch-free trip to Tibet. Foreigners need the Tibet Tourism Bureau permit that can be obtained via tour agencies (www.alltibet.com/ tibet_visa_information.htm) for US$6 (S$9). Some areas also require an Aliens’ Travel Permit, issued by the Public Security Bureau in major Tibetian cities. Getting into Tibet by plane or train is a treat in itself. The QinghaiTibet Railway, which departs from Golmud in Qinghai and takes you to Lhasa, takes less than two days (www.accesstibettour.com/ ticket-price-timetable.html).

Jökulsárlón, South Iceland

ICELAND Mystique Factor: Sitting in the North Atlantic Ocean just south of the Arctic Circle, Iceland is a strikingly captivating island with vast landscapes that are nothing less than pictureperfect. Its location leaves it at the mercy of the sun during the different seasons—winter brings up to 20 hours of darkness, while it’s easy to lose track of time in summer when daylight can stretch past midnight. But spring and autumn, on the other hand see more normal hours and are a good time to witness the amazing works of nature which Iceland is home to. Glaciers and mountainous lava deserts formed by extensive geothermal activity cover more than half of Iceland’s land area. Geothermal activity is also why the island is dotted with geographical wonders, like a rift valley that divides the North American and European tectonic plates at the Pingvellir

Skaftafell National Park in the distance

National Park. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and also houses the world’s longest-running parliament. Vestmannaeyjar, a town on the island Heimaey, which is the biggest island of the Westman Islands archipelago just off the coast of the mainland, is great for bird-watching and hiking. It is also famous for the magical puffling season, where young puffins, attracted by the town’s bright lights, fly into the area. Nobody knows when the pufflings will arrive, but there are always families more than eager to take part in the joyous task of collecting the lost birds to release them back to the sea. Don’t Miss: Chill in one of the many outdoor geothermal swimming pools, which are mainstay of Icelandic life in the capital, Reykjavik. Head out to Husavik, the whalewatching capital in northern Iceland, where it’s almost certain you’ll spot a whale in summer. Tour operators like Eskimos (www.eskimos. is/english/) provide a range of day tours and excursions to see the Northern Lights and to take a dip in the Blue Lagoon. Both the young and old will also love fun activities like dogsledding, racing on snowmobiles and seeing waterfalls and caves. Getting There: Direct flights on Icelandair (www.icelandair.com) and budget airline Iceland Express (www.icelandexpress.com) are available from the United States, Canada and major European cities. If you’re adventurous, follow the Vikings’ route and sail into Iceland via the Smyril Line (www.smyril-line.com) from Denmark and Norway. 11

Eilean Donan Castle, Scottish Highlands

SCOTLAND Mystique Factor: Famous for its castles and highlands spread across vast green plains, Scotland, on the doorsteps of Ireland, England and the North Atlantic Ocean, will leave any traveler who has ever had childhood dreams of reliving the medieval era in awe. Stories of the world’s most famous lake, Loch Ness, and its mythical resident monster come alive with the beauty of the Scottish Highlands. The Highlands are also home to Glencoe Valley and the 4,406-foot high Ben Nevis, which is the highest peak in Britain. Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh, is also brimming with ancient charm of its own. Its commanding castle and medieval relics like Holyrood Palace in the Old Town serve as important reminders of history. Both the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh were bestowed World Heritage status by UNESCO. The city,

well-known for being a literary capital and for producing famous names like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and J.K. Rowling of Harry Potter fame, is also the world’s first UNESCO City of Literature. On the outskirts of Edinburgh, the Aberdour Castle and Silver Sands Beach are picturesque getaways from the urban landscape. Don’t Miss: Choose from famous hiking trails like the West Highland Way that starts from a Glasgow suburb to Fort William and goes deep into the heart of Glencoe Valley. Also take time off to explore the Mamores mountain range if the idea of climbing Ben Nevis scares you. Back in Edinburgh, wander through the Old and New Towns and try to catch a performance at the Edinburgh Playhouse (www.edinburghplayhouse.org.uk), Europe’s largest theater. Try to time your visit to

coincide with one of the many festivals (www. edinburghfestivals.co.uk) that Edinburgh hosts. Catch a 6 Nations Rugby Match (www. rbs6nations.com), which takes place every spring, and be amazed by the passion for rugby that binds the Scots. Getting There: Fly into Scotland via its five international airports at Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness. Major carriers like British Airways (www.britishairways.com) and budget airlines like Ryanair (www.ryanair.com) and Easyjet (www.easyjet.com) have direct or domestic flights from the UK. Scotland is also linked to England by train. Popular options include the National Express East Coast (www. nationalexpresseastcoast.com), which sets off from London’s King’s Cross station, and Virgin Trains (www.virgintrains.co.uk).

BALI

Pura Besakih, Bali

Mystique Factor: Known as the Island of the Gods, Bali, one of the 13,000 islands in the Indonesian archipelago, is well-loved by tourists and locals alike for its pristine beaches, thriving rice terraces and the deep spirituality which thrives there. The coast is a natural destination for surfers who want to experience spots like Kuta Beach, Dreamland and Uluwatu, where surfing in Asia first took off. But the true essence of Bali lies in its some 20,000 temples, which are scattered across the island. Uluwatu and Tanah Lot temples are two of the important nine kayangan jagat (“directional temples” which protect Bali from evil spirits). The Uluwatu temple is dramatically set on the edge of a high cliff overlooking the sea, and was first used for worship by a priest who brought religious law to Bali. Elsewhere in the central foothills of the island, the town of Ubud is famous for being an arts-and-crafts center. A large part of the town is devoted to galleries and artist workshops that showcase Balinese culture. Don’t Miss: Bali’s dive sites (www. divetheworldindonesia.com/bali-diving-sites. htm) offer a wide range of underwater sights like shipwrecks and ridges to navigate. The Liberty Shipwreck, a wreck of an American cargo ship, is considered to be the most popular site for adventure seekers. Be sure to catch a dance and shadow puppet performance (www.balitourismboard.org) in Ubud, and treat yourself to a spa treatment too. Photography buffs should definitely head to the lush green rice terraces near Tegallalang village in central Bali. Getting There: Low-cost carriers like Jetstar Asia (www.jetstar.com) and AirAsia (www. airasia.com) operate daily flights from regional hubs like Singapore and Malaysia. Try to change the required dollars on hand, as few currencies are accepted other than the rupiah. Visitors of most nationalities are also required to buy an entry visa (www.2indonesia.com/visa.htm), so check before you go. Security at the airport is also considerably heavy since the Bali bombings, so factor in enough time for checks. 14

When it comes to tourist spots in Kuala Lumpur, a few names come to mind–Central Market, the Golden Triangle, Petaling Street and, of course, Suria KLCC. All these are great…if you’re looking for a run-of-the-mill holiday while in the Malaysian capital. But if an adventure is what you seek (or if you have a few more days to spare), why not make your trip here more memorable by checking out the alternatives? Thanks to the city’s melting-pot culture and intriguing history, there’s plenty for one to do and see that won’t fall under “C” for “conventional”.

Want to be one with nature? You’ve definitely come to the right place, where parks and forest reserves are within easy reach. Love old buildings and unique architecture? Spend a day in Kuala Lumpur to be pleasantly surprised by what you see. After all, why go home with the same postcard-inspired pictures when you can have so much more the next time you’re there? Are you ready for your unique holiday in Kuala Lumpur? Check out some of our favorite spots. And here’s a hint–leave your guidebook behind and venture into uncharted territory.

FOR THE LAIDBACK TOURIST: Picnic in KLCC Park Spread over 20 hectares, this lush tropical garden in the city’s most popular shopping centre is an oasis of tranquility in the city. More than 1,900 indigenous trees and 66 species of palms have been planted in the park. The grounds are well-equipped with shelters, benches, rest areas, drinking fountains, a 1.3-kilometer jogging track, and a 43-meter elevated bridge to give you a prize view of the park as well as the Petronas Twin Towers. Not to be missed as well are the lake symphony fountains, programmed to move animatedly along to music. It’s an ideal spot for a quick picnic lunch. And if you have children, let them have a splashing fun time at the Children’s Pool, for kids 12 years and below.

FOR THE ARTS AND CRAFT FAN: Tour the

Royal Selangor Visitor Center Love Royal Selangor pewter? Take a tour of its factory and visitor centre to see for yourself how your souvenir is made. Learn all about the company’s history and see different pewter-production processes. Make sure you snap pictures when at the Pewter Museum, where the two-storey high replica of the Petronas Twin Towers is housed. And if you want to try your hand at pewter-crafting yourself, enroll in Royal Selangor’s School of Hard Knocks, an hour-long pewtersmithing workshop where you are taught to create your own pewter dish using traditional tools and methods for a minimal fee. It makes a great souvenir to bring home.

FOR THE CONTEMPORARY ARTIST: Spend a day at the Annexe Gallery Central Market You’ve probably heard of Central Market many times, but have you ventured into its nearby neighbor, The Annexe Gallery? A center for contemporary arts, The Annexe stands in an 1888 building, which was previously a wet market. Today, it hosts a variety of events, including exhibitions, talks, film screenings, workshops, theater and music performances, performance art events and even tango classes. Just want to feel the buzz? Take a walk around its art shops and private galleries, and watch true artisans at work. To find out what’s happening at The Annexe the next time you’re in town, log on to www. annexegallery.com or call (60-03) 2070-1137.

FOR THE NATURE LOVER: Explore Forest Research Institute Malaysia

Located just 16 kilometers away from the capital, the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) is a 600-hectare tropical forest containing a wealth of flora and fauna. Come explore the nature trails

Also, if you are up for thrills, do not miss the park’s canopy walkway. At 30 meters from the ground and stretching for 200 meters, it is just what you need to make your visit a memorable one. For more information, call (60-03) 6279-7525

FOR THE HISTORY BUFF: Check out the heritage sites in town Amid the skyscrapers and modern buildings in Kuala Lumpur are a few heritage buildings that, till today, remain popular sights for both locals and tourists. If you are an avid shutterbug, make sure you don’t leave home without photographing these buildings: the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station and Parliament House. Relics of the city’s history, these architecturally unique buildings are bona fide landmarks. The city also houses several distinctive places of worship that warrant at least a quick pop-by. Some must-see places include Masjid Jamek, the oldest mosque in town, which was built in 1907, Sri Mahamariamman Temple, a Hindu temple built in 1873 and filled with intricate carvings of Hindu deities, precious stones and hand-painted motifs, and Thean Hou Temple, one of the largest Chinese temples in Southeast Asia. Heavy Metal Glam It’s not everyday that you find the lead singer of one of heavy metal’s most (in)famous bands holding court in Changi Airport. Armed with cameras of all sizes, fans staked out their positions in front of the stage when Vince Neil breezed into Terminal 2’s Departure Transit Mall. In town for Mötley Crüe’s first performance in Singapore, Neil chatted amiably with emcee Jamie Yeo about music and when asked who his favorite band member was, he diplomatically answered how given that he had been with them for such a long time, he loved them all equally. Vince Neil is one of the many international stars who have graced Changi’s Meet the Celebrities Program, created to give travelers the best and most memorable airport experience.

Holiday Cheer at Changi Airport Christmas is in the air at Changi Airport! This year, we’ve gone all out to usher in the holidays for our passengers. We’ve decked the airport out in decorative lights—yes, even the external façade—and put together an exciting lineup of events and activities to get you in the festive mood. Plus, don’t miss the chance to get a snapshot with Mickey and his friends! We’ve invited the Disney characters to come down and add a bit of magic to our celebrations. You can catch them in the event

areas at Terminals 1, 2, and 3 as well as Terminal 3 B2 Mall at scheduled times from December 12-28. We’re also giving away exclusive Disney collectibles* and a trip for 2 to Disneyland! Simply spend S$80 with Visa or S$120 by other means at our transit areas, or S$50 with Visa or S$80 by other means at our public areas and Budget Terminal for a chance to win! *Redemption ends on Jan 4, 2009 for transit malls and Budget Terminal. Other terms and conditions apply.

Putting the S.M.I.L.E back in service You can’t have happy passengers without having happy staff. On October 7, the Let’s S.M.I.L.E Campaign 2008 was officially launched by the Minister for Transport and Second Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Raymond Lim, at Terminal 2. Short for Smiling, being Motivated and Interested in our passengers, Listening to their needs and going that Extra mile, the S.M.I.L.E campaign is part of an on-going effort to engage airport staff and help them improve their service skills. This service campaign is part of Changi Airport's ongoing effort to improve the service level at the airport and ensure an enjoyable experience for its passengers. Other QSM activities include a Quality Service Lucky Draw, in which staff have a chance to win a 3 day 2 night trip to Bangkok, Bali or Hong Kong. To date, over 1,500 airport staff have taken part in the QSM festivities, sprucing up their service skills through S.M.I.L.E!

I Write the Songs H

My second-favorite destination is Los Angeles. There’s a definite buzz about the place—it’s so eclectic and exciting, and the people are so open! Finally, I love Paris and London for their culture, architecture, history, museums—they’re so exciting and stimulating. You can feel the energy just walking down the street.

How ZAIA is different from other Cirque du Soleil shows Musically speaking, it’s much more lyrical than the other Cirque shows that I wrote the music for, as such, we spent a lot of time looking for our singers because we were looking for a specific color [in their voices], and this is exactly what we found in our two wonderful singers, Maria Andersson from Sweden and Rose Winebrenner (also known as Chicago Rose) from the United States.

the right opportunities to develop your talent. Finally, you need to be absolutely possessed by passion. Ask yourself: can you imagine your life without music?

What it takes to pursue a career in music There are three things you need. You need to have faith to pursue a career and put yourself into the void and you need to have faith in yourself. Next, you need patience to wait for

Her top three favorite travel destinations Macau is number one on my list. I love working here so much. I love the mix of cultures, the fact that the city is so connected to spirituality, its diversity…and [of course] I love the climate!

What airports can do to enhance the traveler’s experience From a musician’s perspective, what would be great is the creation of microcosmic spaces that allow people to go on a musical journey. So, you would walk through airports...getting from one gate to the other surrounded by the ambience and music of diverse countries. For instance, you could be walking through a “microcosmic France space” and you’ll hear accordion music, Edith Piaf, and then in another section, the whole setting might change to reflect a scene from Cuba... Of course, you’d need a musical director to find really good and authentic music, but still, I think it would really help travelers to relax before they board their flights.
