2016 Year 7. The time where you go from the top of primary school to the bottom of secondary school. This is one of the biggest changes to our lives as we made new friends, met new people, learnt new things, and started the long journey to Year 12. We had to navigate the extensive grounds of the College, learn what books to bring to classes and of course figure out how to use our locks - a quintessential secondary school experience. Some smashing tunes came out that year, including; Justin Bieber’s ‘Love Yourself’, Justin Timberlake’s ‘Can’t Stop the Feeling’ and of course Adele’s iconic ‘Hello’ and many more. The release of ‘JuJu on That Beat’ by TZ Anthem started the popular dance craze of the same name, which was joined with popular trends such as, ‘Damn Daniel!’, the Mannequin Challenge but most importantly, dabbing! We tended to keep to ourselves during the year, as we nervously became more familiar with our new school. We developed new friendships, while older ones from primary school changed. There were some highs, and some lows, as we all got used to being a secondary school student. It was also our first experience of JPC sports Carnivals, and MAD Day and of course our first Retreat. It was in this year where English and Humanities was combined
Year 7
as ‘LENS’, and we went on an excursion to Portsea
4
- our first of many to come throughout the years! We had the opportunity to take part in the Production of ‘Once On This Island’! All in all it was the start of an exciting journey at John Paul College.
5
2017 Year 8 was a time of many changes. Friendships grew and changed as we became more settled into the environment of secondary school and got a better grasp of the life of a secondary school student. We continued with subjects such as Italian, Art, Materials, Theatre Studies, Music and PE. In 2017, Ed Sheeran’s Album ‘Divide’ was released where we enjoyed songs such as ‘Shape of You’ and ‘Castle on the Hill’. We also danced to ‘Despacito’ by Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber and most notably Harry Styles made his comeback with a new album! These songs went hand in hand with the dance craze of Flossing! We enjoyed Year 8 Retreat together, and an excursion to Mornington where we completed a scavenger hunt through Main Street! We had the opportunity to take part in the musical ‘How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying’.
where we took part in activities that targeted our fears and how to overcome them; specifically high ropes, canoes, archery and the flying fox! It was a great way to continue getting to know others in our year level!

Year 8
We also thoroughly enjoyed Year 8 Camp at Alexandra,
7
2018 Year 9 was the year of changing friendships and everyone forming their own identities. At school it was the first year we could pick a few of our own electives. We went on MUSE and were able to go on a ski trip for the first time ever. MUSE was exciting and fun, for those who didn’t get into any arguments with their group throughout the week. We got to experience the CBD with our classmates. Fortnite quickly became the most popular game of the year and scrunchies were everywhere. Around the world the richest baby was born, the Kiki challenge was trending and Black Panther was the biggest movie of the year. Luckily we made it through
Year 9
the year of the biggest changes and made it to 2019.

2019 Year 10 was the last year before the pressure of VCE really began to kick in and our first year as Senior students. While some of us accelerated a year early, it was a fun year all round. We started the year in new Pastorals and in the new subjects we had selected. 2019 was the year of travel and camps. We embarked on a 3 day camp to the Summit in Trafalgar, where we completed adrenaline pumping activities. Some of us went on the Timor-Leste Immersion trip, where we spent 11 days learning how our faith connects us to people who live such different lives. Some students went on Snow Camp to Falls Creek or travelled on a trip of a lifetime to Italy. Towards the end of the year we had our Year 10 Formal. The event was held in the Stella Maris Centre
Around the world people planned to storm Area 51. Lil Nas X and Billie Eilish had the biggest songs of the year and Parasite and the Joker picked up at the Oscars.
10
Year 10
and everyone was decked out in their best outfits
11
2020 Year 11, the start of our VCE/VCAL journey! Who could have expected the crazy year we were in for!? We all started off stressed, nervous and excited for the massive workload about to hit us but we had some friends to enjoy the start of the year with! Exchange students from Italy graced our presence in February. Despite a blinding start, little did we know that a virus making headlines in Wuhan would soon shut down the State. Masks, restrictions and the dreaded online learning soon became part of our daily routine. No sport, no Carnivals, no parties and no Retreat! Despite this though, we persisted, and upon returning towards the end of the year had the entire school to ourselves. Blessed (or cursed) with flops like ‘Dance Monkey’ and ‘The Box’ really helped us to develop resilience
Year 11
skills needed to cope through COVID.
12

2021 Our final year of school! After thirteen long years of schooling, we finally worked our way up the JPC rungs. Year 11 left us all hoping for a fresh start and a return to normality, for the first half of the year, we did! We were able to enjoy our last Athletics and Swimming Carnivals and despite a few short lockdown hiccups along the way, we were finally able to enjoy the long anticipated Year 12 Retreat! Retreat really set the tone for the rest of the year, and allowed us to develop and strengthen our friendships and priorities, which, little did we know, would become very important a few months down the track! After a blinder of a start, July hit and things started to get a little hairy. The mixture of an extended lockdown, rising cases and heaps of assessments placed a lot of pressure on all of us, but looking back now we can truly
2021 produced a few … less trash songs to help us through. Shout out to Olivia Rodrigo for following us through every single radio station and TikTok for 3 months straight. 2021 was perhaps not the final year we wanted it to be, but one thing we can all be sure of is that we are some of the most resilient, caring and witty group of kids. Peace out 2021, we won’t miss you, but we’ll miss each other.

Central Australia A trip we would have never forgotten and still won’t forget because we never went.
The Central Australia trip is a significant adventure in any students journey at John Paul College. It’s a trip that sees Year 11 students tackle the red dirt and humidity for a once in a lifetime opportunity to the Red Centre. The Class of 2021 encountered many challenges when trying to embark on this journey. In Year 11 the trip was cancelled because of COVID - 19. Unfortunately, in Year 12 despite the College’s best efforts to organise another trip, COVID once again prevented these students from adventuring to Central Oz.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak Interesting. Was written from the perspective of death which was unique.

The Longest Memory
Gave an insight into life during World War 2.
by Fred D’Aguiar Sad book. Easy to read and was short. Gave an insight into slavery in America. #wehateSanderssenior #chaliza4eva
The Golden Age by Joan London Sort of interesting. Storyline didn’t develop that much. At least we learnt a lot about polio in Australia. Should’ve channelled Albert and ran away from the book. Sister Penny lived a good romantic life.
YEAR 9
Rich & Rare
Tracks
Edited by Paul Collins
by Robyn Davidson
SO SO bad. At least the stories were short. Pretty sure we only read one story from the whole book.
The book was set in Australia, we got to watch ‘Into The Wild’. Highlight of the book was the camels.
Romeo and Juliet Insight
Macbeth
by Shane Barnes and Aidan Coleman At least we didn’t have to try and interpret the play. The book did it for us. Leonardo Di Caprio in the movie was the best bit.
50
Ransom by David Malouf Mixed reviews. Some people hated it and found it painful to read. Others like that it was different and unique, and written in a poetic way. But one thing we can all agree on, is that none of us will ever read it again.
OR
by William Shakespeare Was actually good. Way better to read than Romeo and Juliet. We thought English was for reading books. Not reading plays.
