“We never know how we affect the lives of our family and friends on the journey we call life, hopefully it will help us open our hearts to believe that something extraordinary can always happen in our lives. Today isn’t about us from Dominican College, but this is about the legacy of a phenomenal Dominican College Alumni-Batch 87, who is determined to make a difference for their alma mater. Together, we will fulfill our duty as Dominicans to our community. Let’s continue to build the bonds of friendship and goodness through cooperation and mutual respect.

It is not about making our dream a reality, it’s about keeping the torch lit for entirety. With this, we are ACCEPTING the torch, THE TORCH that will continuously serve as our guiding light – the guiding light of Dominican College Batch 87 aka OCHO SIETE.”

welcome BACK... MANY HAPPY RETURNS!

2012 1987 ok, now talk to me! whatever concerns you, tickles you, or ticks you off about OCHO SIETE, i’d love to know. Bear with us if you don’t hear back immediately.

I

HOPE YOU WILL JOIN US this year in breaking out the noisemakers, party hats and raising a glass to 25 years of BATCH 87- OCHO SIETE!!! 1987 forward to January 28, 2012 --- that was then, this is now.

Our batch is fierce, forging an identity as a fearless advocate for women and offering unflinching coverage of all issues. We are fans of Dominican College, and I am always thrilled to the monthly challenge of blending humor, attitude and deep reporting on our lives with the lowdown on the latest splurge and steal and must-have vibrating mascara. To mark the occasion, we’ve packed this first and the only issue of OCHO SIETE with the latest information and whatchamacallits that we have collated in more than two years and not to forget, special mention to facebook, where we all got together. We are proud to give you our stunning portfolio --- a gift we can all appreciate. Cheers to Batch 1987!!!!

f r i e n d s a nd friendships Rachelle Datu Everyone has a story to tell from high school. These were the best of times where we can act silly, be funny, be serious and be what we want to be with friends around us and invent ourselves with high school as our lab. Friendship was developed slowly and gradually. Bonding time was spent during recess and lunch time with unending chatting and story-telling. We shared life’s memorable moments. We laughed together, had good and bad times together and enjoyed mutually liked activities. We would play around, chase each other and even have water balloon fights. Our wackiness and shall I say our being “fun-loving” was “misunderstood” by some … they even labelled us as the “notorious seniors”. I recalled some of the parties organized by our classmates… some were titled “Millennium Maudlin Moments….”, “A Dance Party Zany Zillion Zone…” whatever the title is and wherever it is – it was organized for us to have fun. We even organized a Halloween party where we made our own casket, dug graves, and decorated the whole place like a graveyard. It was a ladies party of dancing, laughing, eating, bonding, swimming and funnnnnnn! After graduating in 1987, most of us lost track and communication with our other classmates. Many of us become so busy with our own lives that they had let friendships slipped by over the years. It was March 2002 when DCAN ’87 yahoo group was created and we started exchanging email messages and personally catching up with each other. Some of us became active with the yearly DC homecoming. Meet up and bonding became easier. With the yahoo group it was easier to be connected to both Friendster and especially Facebook. Simple get together here in Manila and even in the US became more accessible. After two decades of not seeing each other and losing contact everything became possible and catching up felt great as if we never distance from each other. Building friendship takes time and includes obstacles and hardships. It requires risk, risk of requiring self-disclosure. Ours was developed through persistence. It was built on trust and mutual respect. Friends has a sixth sense because they they are there for you when you need them. Some say that if you find at least one good friend then your life can be so much better. Friends put up with your moods and antics; they listen to your silence. But for me – I found OCHO-SIETE, nothing is more meaningful than that. Friends and friendships are here to stay. Through the years, we have shared a special bond, a bond of sisterly love and support. A bond that will last till our next lifetime... friends are blessings – OCHO-SIETE is a blessing.

it all started here... december 2010. our first get together before the turnover. we got our official shirts!

with the team, started thinking about our plans...

25 reasons to be nice. 1. Give at least one sincere compliment a day and it doesn’t have to be much. Tell someone they have a nice smile, or you like their shoes or you envy their patience. If you look for it, you can find something positive to say about anyone. 2. If you buy something from a vending machine, leave the change in the change thingy for the next person. It’s funny how someone finding an unexpected quarter makes their day. 3. Make a bunch of small little notes that have positive messages like “Have a nice day!” or “Someone loves you” and hide them around a public area for random strangers to find. This is a good project for those who have kids. 4. Overtip your waitress. 5. Give an extra Php10.00 when you pay for something (retail, fast food restaurant) and ask that they apply it to the next person in line. 6. If you pack lunches for your loved one, stick a small note telling them to have a great day. Similarly, hide small love letters in your significant others pockets/bags/jackets. 7. When you see a mom with a stroller going into a building, hold the door for her. She’ll appreciate it more than you’ll know! 8. Send a random e-Card to someone you haven’t talked to in a while for no special reason. 9. Leave flowers anonymously at your colleague’s desk. 10. Make eye contact with people and smile. 11. Wave when someone lets you merge on the road. 12. Let someone who has five items at the grocery store go in front of you.

spread the love 13. Holiday season is a great time to recognize people who are underappreciated, leave some homemade goodies in your mailbox with a thank you note for your postman. `14. Buy a current bestseller and donate it to the local library. 15. Give blood to the Red Cross. 16. When a waitress or other service person has been exceptional, let their manager know. 17. If you take walks around the neighborhood, bring along a bag and pick up trash as you go. 18. During the holidays, bring some hot chocolate or coffee to the bell ringers who are standing outside in cold weather. 19. Thank a co-worker or employee out of the blue for their hard work. 20. Give a child's old toys to a shelter every holiday season instead of trashing them. 21. Buy a homeless person some water on a hot day. 22. Let someone pregnant or an elderly sit in your seat when none are available. 23. Thank your spouse, significant other, roommate, mom, etc. whenever they prepare a meal for you. It shows great appreciation. 24. When making dinner, double the recipe and deliver dinner to a neighbor. 25. Pay the toll of the car driving behind you.

Huge thanks to everybody involved and whose work in these pages is proof that there’s more to me than simply a moody b*tch with a pout.

Before closing this book, take time to think that this annual souvenir book is different. It’s not just about our year, it’s about every year that came before as well. It’s about both passion and progress, the latter being that much sweeter for being an added bonus of something we would have enjoyed doing anyway. Everything we do is driven by our commitment to building a great team. It takes talented and passionate people to create successful projects such as this much-awaited reunion slash get together party, and we are fortunate to have attracted more than our fair share. We aim to keep them and you, our schoolmates, blissfully happy in the coming year. see you soon!
