around the world) to bring the best quality costume jewellery- both on-trend and classical pieces. Our designs are based on current trends and customer demand.

What are your most successful pieces?

Connie Nam and Jenny Orlova are best friends and Founders of jewellery company Astrid & Miyu. They met at London Business School where they inspired one another to take a leap of faith from investment banking to the glittering world of fashion and costume jewellery.

Our best selling products are the rose gold pieces. They are very unique, delicate and classical. People often mistake them for very expensive fine jewellery! In all of our collections we use personally picked funky names. The Rose Gold collection for example was themed around love, our favourite piece was the Pink Martini bracelet called Love At First Sight.

What made you want to start Astrid & Miyu? When we were at work the only way to express our personal style was through accessories. While we were willing to pay high prices for designer bags and shoes, we were reluctant to pay an exorbitant premium for designer jewellery. We were trying to solve our personal pains by retailing designer quality pieces at affordable price points. And that’s how Astrid & Miyu started!

What are your favourite beauty products? - Connie: The products I return to again and again are the Fresh Sugar Scrub, Shu Uemura Oil Cleanser, Guerlain Midnight Secret, Kiehl’s Ultra Face Cream- and everything from Avene! - Jenny: I have been hooked on the Dior Hydra Life skincare range for the last two years for my moisturiser and eye cream. I’m also a big fan of Dermalogica.

Where do you find your pieces? We work with about 50 independent designers (that supply to high-end retailers

What is your best beauty tip? - Jenny: start using eye cream early (i.e. before you are 25) and get lots of sleep. - Connie: Invest in good cleansing products and have happy thoughts!

What’s it like working together? - Jenny: We have a lot of fun and we communicate all the time. I think that is key in any partnership. To check out the girls fantastic collections, head to www.astridandmiyu.com

- Connie: It’s been amazing to be able to work with my best friend. I guess this is in a way what marriage would be like!

What advice would you give to anybody interested in getting into the fashion industry? -Connie: Speak to people that can help you make it happen. Get your feet in the door as soon as possible. Be aware that it may not be as glamorous as it looks. -Jenny: Have good reasons for why you really want to do it (not just because you like shopping) be passionate and willing to learn!

JOLIEPLACE FOUR, LONDON

Four, London Standing tall in the heart of Mayfair is the fabulous hair salon Four. Created by four women, all specialised colourists, the salon prides itself on being the go-to place to get your colour just right. On arrival, the extravagant glass door sets the tone for the sumptuous salon inside. I was lucky enough to spend a good three hours having my hair revamped by these women who really are a cut above the rest.

brown with lighter sections underneath faking that ‘just been in the sun’ look. Denise decided to apply a darker colour through my roots and then randomly picked sections of hair that were lightened at the ends with a high lift tint. I then sat under the huge dryer waiting for the heat to activate the dye. After more chats and cups of tea, I was ushered over to the basins where Denise washed and checked the colour. Following her approval, I received a shampoo and a deep conditioning treatment that was left in to nourish my hair for a few minutes.

On their website it states, “We want somewhere you can feel ‘at home’ the minute you walk through the door; a nonintimidating, hassle-free environment”. Now, I may be very easily impressed, but my first impressions were ‘Blimey- this is posh!’ It’s only when I was in my seat and introduced to the lovely Denise that I started to relax and feel like I wasn’t in an episode of Sex and the City or some Kate Hudson film!

With freshly washed hair, Denise handed me over to the fabulous Carly (who, we might add, was rocking an amazing lipstick; MAC’s Morange) for the second part of the transformation. In my consultation with the girls, I had explained that I wanted my hair to look thicker and with this (and Olivia) in mind, Carly went for a ‘grown out bob’ as she called it. She cut a blunt square line through the back and sides so that the length would look slightly longer at the front.

After showing Denise, the colourist and Carly, the stylist, a picture on my phone of my hair crush, Olivia Palermo, they both had an idea of what I wanted. I wanted the overall colour to be a richer chocolate

After

Before Carly asked how I wanted to style my hair and I assured her to go with the flow- the expert always knows best with these things! Her drying technique was like nothing I’ve seen before. She started by spraying my hair with a volumising spray all over and at the roots to add texture. She then blow-dried using a ‘pincurl’ technique, which consists of blow-drying sections around a rounded brush and then curling the hair around itself into a loose bun, gripping into place. After a minute or two, the hair was set and ungripped, revealing silky smooth voluminous curls.

Four 62 Conduit Street. Mayfair London 020 7297 9600 www.fourlondon.com

We have the usual ‘before’ and ‘after’ pics, and I think we can all agree- the girls did very well! It looks thicker, healthier and I can tell its going to be much more manageable... I’m chuffed! If you take a look at their site, the prices may leave you a little wide-eyed. Yes, it’s not the cheapest in the world, but it’s not the most expensive around either. I can think of nothing more indulgent than visiting this salon for a special occasion or a one-off treat.

JOLIEMAG

I couldn’t recommend the salon more; gorgeous environment, lovely people and a fab hairdo- what more could a girl want?

JOLIEQUESTION

RECOVER FROM YOUR SUMMER

How to recover from your summer: the indispensable beauty must-haves.

MAC

Chromagraphic Pencil

There is no better way to relax than taking the time to indulge in a good ol’ soak. Aveda’s Stress-fix range is the perfect antidote for Londoners coping with the chaos the Olympics will have bestowed on our city. We recommend the Stress-Fix Soak Salts, a sugar and mineralrich salt infused with calming lavender, clay sage and essential oils to wash away all tension and leave your skin silky smooth.

Whether you have been lucky enough to take a trip abroad, camp out at a festival or get involved in the Olympics, this summer will have been an eventful one for many. Although fun, holidays and festivals can bring with it particular beauty concerns. Chlorine and sea water can have drying, colour-stripping effects on your hair while your skin battles with dehydrating air-conditioning and cabin air. At muddy festivals the abandonment of a proper skincare routine can lead to a build-up of impurities resulting in breakouts. So we thought this month we’d talk you through our golden products that will help you feel recovered, revived and rebalanced.

After campsite ‘showers’ and the often… ahem, inebriated night of skipping make up removal (we all have them) take the time to treat your skin to a proper deep cleanse. Aesop’s Parsley Seed Cleansing Masque from their popular range has got everybody talking. Its clay-based formula penetrates deeply into the skin lifting impurities and leaving you with a clarified and replenished base.

ESTÉE LAUDER

RECOVER FROM YOUR SUMMER

Advanced Night Repair To defend your skin from any harmful UVAs you may have picked up on holiday, follow up with the cult classic, Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum for the ultimate treatment in restoring your skin. Packed with hydrating Hyaluronic Acid, applying a few drops of this magic potion every night after cleansing and before moisturiser keeps skin looking plump and youthful. After the drying effects sun, sea and chlorine filled pools can have, your hair may have taken a bit of a battering this summer. To combat any buildup, we love WEN’s Sweet almond mint Cleansing Conditioner, a one-stop shop that cleanses and conditions at the same time. Don’t be alarmed when the shampoo doesn’t lather up, the SLS free formula contains no sulfates and harsh chemicals which are prone to strip the hair of its natural essential oils. Lucky for you guys, it came in last month’s July box, do let us know what you thought!

AÉSOP Parsley Seed Cleansing Masque

Our last product is more of a beauty tip and for it we recommend MAC’s Chromagraphic Pencil in NW25-NC30. Whether you have suffered from Hay fever or a lack of sleep, lining your waterline with a nude based eyeliner will cancel out any redness you may have making you look more awake and alert.

WEN Sweet Almond Mint

So there you have it, our five beauty essentials to get you restored, renewed and back on your feet in no time. Even if you are having a pretty uneventful summer, there is never a bad time to treat yourself to a bit of TLC. Enjoy!

products and writing for the magazine about all the new and exciting things hitting the market. There’s never a dull moment.

What is your most treasured beauty tip? A silk pillowcase. It’s much softer on your skin and doesn’t pull your face as much to give you any premature wrinkles!

What is your favourite beauty product of the moment? I was recently given a Supracor SpaCells Facial Sponge and am obsessed with it. It’s a small honeycomb mitt that you use to wash your cleanser off, I see it as the next generation of muslin cloths. It’s been developed by scientists at NASA and is totally allergen-free, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. It stimulates the blood and lymph flow too.

Angelica Hermon

Grazia UK’s beauty coordinator

How did you start working at Grazia? I had started doing a fashion journalism degree and after a year I just really wasn’t into it and felt I would get more out of working so I told my Uni tutor I wanted to take a year out and for a solid year I did back to back internships at nearly every magazine out there and luckily by the end of the year when it was time to go back to Uni I had been offered a permanent position at Grazia.

What does a typical day at the office involve? No two days are the same really - everything from writing for Grazia Daily to going to product launches to meeting PR’s at Dean Street Townhouse or my new favourite the Riding House Cafe. As well as looking at millions of beauty

This month French make-up artist for RIMMEL, Olivier Tissot, demonstrates how to create this universally flattering gold smokey eye. With newly bronzed holiday skin, the simplicity of this look is pretty, understated and effortlessly chic.

Apply an iridescent gold colour all over the lid and in the inner corner of the eye. Then line the upper lash line with a brown pencil.

Apply your base as normal. Olivier starts with applying mascara, this will reduce the risk of smudging or messing up the eye shadow at the end.

3

4 Mattify the skin with a loose powder and a touch of blusher, a peachy coral will look great with this look. Finish with a nude lipstick or balm to keep the focus on the eyes.

Work a warm toned brown shade into the crease and blend the two colours together, making sure there are no harsh lines.

JOLIETEAM ON THIS MOMENT

This month the JolieTeam take you through their stand out beauty products of the moment…

2. 3.

Grace, JolieMag Editor 1. ÉCLAT LUMIÈRE

CHANEL Under eye concealers, or ‘illuminating pens’ as they are better known is a favourite topic of mine. I am forever on the search for the perfect ‘one’. I’ve tried them all; the infamous YSL Touche Eclat to the Lisa Eldridge approved Clinique Airbrush Concealer, but my favourite of all time is Chanel’s Eclat Lumiere, which is the perfect mix of attracting light to the face (but not too much) while still concealing dark circles without being cakey at all.

1.

3. KATE LASTING FINISH LIPSTICK-SHADE 05

RIMMEL Kate Moss for Rimmel is a match made in beauty heaven. The formulation of these lipsticks are great, they glide onto the lips, are really moisturising and have an impressive staying power which is amazing considering they are basically a fiver each! For me, the star of the collection is 05, a flattering raspberry shade that can be dressed up or down- blot with a tissue for a more laid-back, worn in stain or reapply with another coat for a glossier dense colour.

2. NAIL POLISH

ESSIE Essie Nail polishes are the talk of the town in the beauty community ever since they launched their new and improved formula and brushes over in the UK. Cute as a Button is a gorgeous bright coral but if I fancy something more subtle I go with my favourite pastel shade Lilacism, which always attracts praise from friends.

JOLIEHISTORY ETAT PUR

Etat Pur, The Science of Skincare. Actives. You may have heard of them along the grapevine, or you could be discovering them for the first time, but actives are taking the world of skincare by storm and revolutionising the way we take care of our skin.

How does it work?

What is an Active?

The majority of the pure Actives comes from plant extracts or are pure molecules concentrated at its effective dose. These actives are not masked in complex formulas but included in a unique formula that allows them to act wherever the skin needs them.

An active is a specific ingredient that is selectively chosen for its capacity to act on a particular skin problem. For example, if your skin is dehydrated, with redness and sensations of discomfort, you should use an active well-known for its soothing properties. It brings the effectiveness to the skincare product.

Apply one to five drops, according to the targeted area (face, eye contour, leg etc), directly onto cleansed skin. You can use more than one pure Active, but the skin must totally absorb one before applying another. As the texture is very light, you can quickly follow up with your normal day or night cream..

Etat Pur, a new skincare brand, has selected the most effective and purest possible actives to correct all skin disorders. For each skin problem you will find a specific pure Active.

JOLIEMAG

N째6 August 2012

JOLIEHISTORY ETAT PUR

Pure Actives: The glossary

LW HYALURONIC ACID: Recommended for deep wrinkles and loss of firmness. Use at morning/night.

CITRIC ACID AHA: Gently exfoliates the skin, ideal for dull complexions in need of radiance. Use at night. MIMOSA TENUIFLORA: Regenerates mature and fragile skin. Very effective on wrinkles and stretch marks. Use at morning/night.

CAFFEINE: This pure Active is recommended for cellulite. Use at morning/night for at least a month.

SALICYLIC ACID: The 70 mg formula is recommended for blackheads. The 300 mg higher concentration is to be applied directly on blemishes and spots. Use at night.

What is the difference between pure Actives and Serums? The best way to understand the difference is to see pure Actives as being closer to a type of pharmaceutical remedy. Whereas a serum is a cocktail of several actives without any targeted effectiveness, there is a pure Active designed specifically for each problem; under-eye dark circles, spots, pigmentation, cellulite, there is even one designed for smokers skin! Aurelie Guyoux, Scientific Manager at Etat Pur explains that prevention against the signs of ageing can begin as early as 25 if necessary, depending on your lifestyle and environment. Antioxidants and products rich in polyphenols can protect and preserve a youthful and healthy looking skin. Argan, Green tea or Q10 pure Actives are particularly recommended. ESTÉE FROM ESSIEBUTTON.COM

Estée from essiebutton.com

21 year-old Estée is the face and brains behind her popular blog essiebutton.com. We discuss what made her start blogging, her favourite products of all time and what it’s like to have over a million views on YouTube!

essiebutton.com

How did you first get into blogging and why? I got into blogging a few months after I moved to England from Canada. I didn’t have too many friends in England yet and somehow one evening I stumbled across a few beauty blogs. From that point on I was obsessed and since I had a lot of time on my hands I thought I’d give it a whirl!

How does it feel knowing you’ve had over 1.8 million views on YouTube?! Although I’m extremely thankful, to be honest I don’t think about it. If I did think about it I would probably panic and never make a video again. That being said, my mom thinks it’s awesome! (Hi Mom!)

What do you do in your ‘real life’? Besides making YouTube videos and blogging, I work part-time and study Social Work & Psychology. Between those three things I don’t have too much time, but I love going to markets around London. I once saw a man carrying his dog on his shoulder like a parrot!

1 REN ROSE O12 MOISTURE DEFENCE SERUM 2 DIOR CREME DE ROSE SMOOTHING PLUMPING LIP BALM 3 NARS YACHIYO KABUKI BRUSH 4 LAURA MERCIER SECOND SKIN CHEEK COLOUR

Favourite beauty product of the moment? I’m all about the lashes right now so I’ve been testing out the Diorshow Maximizer Lash Plumping Serum. It’s basically just a mascara primer (you put under your mascara) that helps curl and thicken your lashes.

What are your five Holy Grail products of all time?

What advice would you give to somebody who wants to start a blog? I think one of the main things with blogging is that you have to have a "passion" for it. A lot of people don’t realise it takes a lot of time and effort to maintain a blog- not to mention keep up with all of the new products being released. Being yourself is key. Oh, and write posts that you want to read!
