now, then we asked the French JolieBox team to give us the low-down for this month’s JolieQuestion on pages 8 and 9.
This month JolieBox celebrates its first Birthday! Can you believe it’s been a whole year since the idea was born in France and six months since we launched into the UK? To celebrate we’ve gone back to our roots and packed this issue full with our French beauty favourites!
The final pages of the magazine as always are dedicated to you – the JolieMembers! We asked you to share your favourite product that we’ve ever featured in a JolieBox, so have a look on pages 22 and 23 to see what you all had to say. Remember to have a look at our JolieBox UK Facebook and Twitter pages to see how you can be involved with next month’s JolieMembers section!
Our choice for JolieSta of the Month was easy – it had to be Mathilde Lacombe, one of the Co-founders of JolieBox and acclaimed beauty blogger! Head onto pages 4 and 5 where she talks about all things JolieBox and her top beauty picks.
Au revoir!
From French pharmaceutical skincare to Parisian chic makeup, we’ve got it covered on our JolieShopping guide on pages 10 and 11. And if you want to know what beauty products are hot in France right JOLIEMAG

MATHILDE LACOMBE Co-founder of JolieBox and writer of Lavieenblonde.fr Tell us about your background? I’m Mathilde, I’m 24 and I’m a beautyaddict! I worked as a beauty journalist for ELLE and other French magazines for two years, before I started JolieBox in June 2011. What made you start JolieBox? I loved the idea of sample boxes and saw the concept developing in the US and realised that it didn’t exist in France so I thought, why not do it myself! Although I had the help of four friends, as finance and marketing aren’t really my things. What are your top three beauty products? I have so many, three is too little, I’ll have to say five! Firstly the Clarisonic Mia, I’ve been using it for two years and I’m still in love with it! A bit pricey but your skin will thank you. Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser is the best product for a perfect complexion. It gives a nice amount of coverage without looking cakey, that’s what I like. I used to have a lot of highlights so my hair is quite damaged but I find the Redken All Soft Shampoo and Conditioner are the best for making my hair really soft and shiny. Regenerating Body Oil when I get out of the shower on damp skin and it leaves my skin moisturised and glowy. My final favourite is the Aesop Control Gel – a great product to get rid of pimples. What is your best beauty tip? Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise! It’s the key to everything. I don’t believe in all the promises brands make, I believe in basic things that can really make a difference over time. And smile! Do you have any advice for getting started in the beauty business? Be passionate! I started my blog when I was still a student because I knew I wanted to become a beauty journalist but since I didn’t have any contacts in the industry so I thought having a blog would help me get noticed. And luckily, it did!

For this month’s JoliePlace, we wanted to open your eyes to something relaxing, tranquil and detoxifying and the first location that sprung to mind was this intimate hideaway in the serene surroundings of Versailles, the Vinothérapie Spa from Caudalie.
anti-ageing and regenerating properties. Grapes are known to increase collagen and elastin production and provide unequalled action against free radicals, the main contributors of skin ageing. The treatments on offer therefore leave you with firmer, healthier and more beautiful than ever skin.
We’re devout Caudalie users at JolieBox HQ, we especially cannot get enough of their Eau de Beauté Beauty Elixir, so we’re scheduling in a trip after hearing that Caudalie incorporate these awardwinning products into their soothing treatments.
The Versailles location of their Vinothérapie Spa is particularly peaceful. Having maintained the charm of its rustic surroundings the design was heavily influenced by the work of impressionist painter Corot, which can be seen in its intimate, yet modern finish. It offers the full range of treatments which all sound so achingly sleep-inducing we don’t know how we’d choose!
Set-up by Caudalie founders Mathilde and Bertrand Thomas in 2008, the Vinothérapie spas are havens for unique treatments centred around the grape and carried out by specialised Vinotherapists. The focus on grapes is due to their

From being treated to their honey and wine wrap to a 4-hand refreshing massage under a Vichy shower with grape-seed oil or Crushed Cabernet Scrub, you’re guaranteed to feel like a new person after your stay! If facials are more your thing, then the Anti-oxidant rich Caudalie Grand Facial treatment might be more to your tastes. This entirely manual treatments works for all skin types and relaxes your features, restores your radiant complexion, regulates moisture and accelerates cellular renewal. spray to revive our makeup throughout the day. We spoke about BB Creams in the last issue of JolieMag and in the UK while we’re going crazy for the Maybelline Dream Fresh, the newest BB Cream to hit the market, in France, the latest import from Korea is dominating their beauty pages the Eborian BB Cream. This 3-in-1 formula unifies your skintone to conceal all imperfections, moisturises and offers a satin-like finish to the skin. We can’t wait for this to hit UK shores!
It’s no big secret that the French love their skincare. While over here we’re racing to get our hands on the French pharmacy style micellar waters, like the TAAJ Himalaya Micellar Water that we featured in our February JolieBox, over in France oil-based cleansers are all the rage. We hear that the Shu Uemura Classic Cleansing Oil is top of the cleanser pickings. Rich in botanical avocado and jojoba oils with natural phyto ingredients, this is what the ladies in the French JolieTeam use to remove their makeup every evening.

Another hot product in the beauty world right now are facial spritzes, which we’re sure has nothing to do with a certain celebrity endorsement! But the Caudalie Eau de Beauté Beauty Elixir is causing a stir on each side of the Channel! It seems that both teams class this elixir containing grape, mint, rosemary and rose extracts as an absolute essential at the moment. We use ours as a toner and refreshing JOLIEMAG

Another wonder product that we’ve all repurchased many a time and whose popularity spreads worldwide is the YSL Touche Eclat. It seems that the French team can’t get enough of it and neither can we! This illuminating complexion enhancer pen has been around for 20 years and brings light and radiance to areas of the face in just one click. We love to apply this under and above the brows for some extra definition and it looks great swept over the cheekbones for a subtly shimmering glow.
So there you have it, these are the top five products that are making the beauty headlines in France right now. The excitement for some products has trickled overseas but we know that there’s a few products that have made their way onto our lists for when we next make a trip to Paris! Bon voyage!

A craze that has exploded onto both the UK and French beauty scenes is the concept of potted nail polish remover. A cotton pad-free solution where you pop your finger into the pot and it instantly removes your nail polish. These were first released in France by Sephora, with Bourjois quickly following with their Magic 1 Second Nail Polish Remover. We love this idea, it makes switching between nail polish colours so easy!

JULIEN AZENCOTT Co-founder of French skincare brand CODAGE Tell us about your background. Amandine and I are very close as brother and sister. We were born in the south of France and we grew up in Cannes. We both studied International Business and started our professional lives within the health and beauty sectors. In 2006 we founded a consulting company in the US, helping international cosmetics brands to develop their activity between there and France. With our experience in the industry we decided to create our own brand of skincare, CODAGE. Our second entrepreneurial adventure together but this time the one of our lives! What made you and Amandine create CODAGE? The idea of CODAGE appeared to both Amandine and I as the obvious thing to do. After working for many brands of JOLIEMAG
cosmetics and with the top cosmetic labs, CODAGE emerged to us as the only brand that could really be in complete coherence with our values. Giving customers maximum efficiency, customised products, dedicated service and most of all respect for nature and what it has best to offer us. In a nut-shell CODAGE is a brand strongly characterised by its essence of a rich French know-how, but located midway between the traditional French pharmacy and all the modernity of advanced research in active cosmetics. Tell us about the range. CODAGE believes in an effective yet simple 4-step skincare routine to offer the best efficiency. Firstly we offer a universal cleanser that removes makeup and all impurities. Then we suggest using topical nutrition for your skin with serums highly concentrated with active ingredients to nourish your skin from the outside. We offer a customised solution in the form 12
N째4 June 2012
of My CODAGE, a made-to-order serum strictly for you after a diagnostic online at mycodage.com, or a choice from our top 6 most effective formulas or you can treat your skin to a special edition serum that we release each season specific to what skin needs in certain weather conditions. We then suggest you protect your skin using our day and night cream formulations and finally we offer a range of dietary supplements to help nourish your skin from within. What CODAGE products are your daily essentials? Of course, we became totally addicted to our customised serums, and cannot spend a day without them. However, we are completely crazy about CODAGE Nuit, CODAGE’s night cream. In fact, it took us almost 2 years to develop this product as it’s been very hard to stabilise this formula as it’s highly concentrated with moisturising, anti-aging, regenerating properties, plus it smells great!
What is your best beauty tip? Treat your skin with great care, and always cleanse, treat and nourish your skin at night before going to bed so you wake up looking refreshed! Any advice for getting started in the beauty business? Think twice about it! It’s a very tough industry, and it takes a lot of time, years in fact, to develop products. You would need to be really passionate about it and to be a real believer that your products will be the best for your customers. So you need to have great dedication and solid connections with the scientific world in order to come up with great product formulas. For instance, it took us almost 4 years to come up with our customisation protocol and to start selling our first product. But it was worth it!

A tiny little tube that never leaves my side! It’s a great combination between a good moisturiser and a nude lipstick. Completely indispensable!
Ever since I tried this in the February JolieBox I have been hooked and using it everyday! It’s important to me that a product is natural and contains no nasties like parabens and I love the way it removes my makeup so effortlessly without leaving any residue.

This is all my hands need all-year round to keep them supple, soft and nourished. I love it because it contains a blend of Shea butter, almond oil and honey and smells great!
This balm is genius. I use it as a day cream during Spring and Summertime, but I also apply it once a week as a face mask as it leaves my skin looking bright and relaxed. JOLIEMAG

Inspired by his childhood in Provence, a young Olivier Baussan decided to recreate the traditions of his region after purchasing a steam distiller. Olivier harvested wild rosemary and produced pure rosemary essential oil and then sold this essential oil at local markets which was quickly picked up by villagers, therefore marking the birth of L’Occitane. We’ve always wondered where the name ‘L’Occitane’ came from, and it actually originates from Oliver’s ambition to create a company that celebrated MediterraJOLIEMAG

It’s difficult to pick out some of our favourite L’Occitane products, but at JolieBox HQ we all agree that their Almond Shower Oil is the ultimate bathtime essential. For our hands we can’t get enough of the Shea Butter Hand Cream, which helps keep our mitts nourished all year round. And their recently released Lipstick in Pivoine Délicate is all that has been gracing our lips lately – it’s the perfect au natural shade.
This Summer they’re releasing new highly hydrating additions to the Angelica range.
