EDITOR’S LETTER In honour of this month’s Beauty in the City theme, we made it our mission to track down must-try products from around the globe. This issue of the JolieMag is packed with tips on using your new products, real life beauty advice, and much more. We kicked things off with an interview with our cover girl and latest crush, Birchbox Editorial Director Mollie Chen. The self-proclaimed snack fiend told us all about her beauty splurges and holy grail products (including a genius-sounding goofproof liquid liner). Next, this month’s shopping guide is inspired by our newly expanded family here at JolieBox—we’ve picked some of our favourite products from each of our headquarter countries: France, Spain—and now— America!

of JolieBox staff product picks, and a new JolieBlogger interview. We caught up with the hilarious Louise from Sprinkle of Glitter to find out her current beauty obsession and who she follows on YouTube.

What would a city beauty box be without a bit of street style? We hit the streets of London’s Brick Lane on a crisp Sunday afternoon to showcase the best of real life beauty. We were inspired by these fresh looks and we know you will be too.

And finally, we have a section dedicated completely to you, our amazing community. We’ve gathered some of our favourite posts, pins, and tweets from the last month. Check it out and then be sure to follow us on all your favourite social media channels. You might find yourself cropping up in next month’s mag!

You’ll also find a step-by-step guide to giving yourself an indulgent athome manicure on (hint: you can use one of your new samples!), a roundup JOLIEMAG

JOLIECRUSH

MOLLIE CHEN, EDITORIAL DIRECTOR OF BIRCHBOX

Mollie Chen, Editorial Director of Birchbox Describe your job. What does a typical day look like for you?

What is the biggest mistake you’ve ever made in beauty?

I know everyone says this, but every day is different! I get in early because I like to have an hour to myself with my coffee and my inbox. After that, I usually have tons of meetings about everything from editorial lineups to marketing campaigns. I’ll meet with editors about blog, article, or video ideas, collaborate with our creative team…everything! In between, you’ll find me at my desk playing with products (especially new lip colours!) and snacking on something delicious—I eat constantly!

Years ago, I was taking Retin-A for acne and forgot to tell my eyebrow waxer that key fact. She ended up burning me and my entire eye area swelled up. I looked like Quasimodo—and it was right before New Year’s Eve! Not my finest holiday look.

The 3 products you keep repurchasing? I adore Jouer’s Luminizing Moisture Tint. It gives me sheer coverage that looks natural and glowy. I don’t wear a ton of eyeshadow but I’m a huge fan of liner—I switch between Stila’s Stay All Day Liquid Liner in Black and Brown. The pen-style applicator makes them supereasy to apply. And I rely (heavily) on Benefit’s Ooh La Lift under eye brightener to keep me looking awake.

Your next/latest beauty purchase? I just picked up a tomato red lipstick from Beauty is Life. I’ll be wearing it all autumn and winter. Next on my list: MCMC Fragrance’s latest gorgeous scent, Phoenix.

JOLIECRUSH

MOLLIE CHEN, EDITORIAL DIRECTOR OF BIRCHBOX

The one trend you will adopt this fall/winter?

Do you wear perfume? Are you faithful to one fragrance or do you often change?

I just chopped off all my hair and got bangs! I actually let the Birchbox Facebook fans decide my cut—it was terrifying but ultimately turned out well!

I love scents but I always forget to put them on before I leave the house! I keep a rollerball in my purse, though, and a few fragrances on my desk. I switch it up depending on my mood—some of my favorites include Jo Malone, Pomegranate Noir, MCMC Fragrance Maine, Atelier Cologne Bois Blonde.

The biggest beauty splurge you’ve ever made? I am a skincare nerd and I’ll always spend a little more on great products for my face. I’m especially into anti-aging serums that use natural oils. This fall, I splurged on Joanna Vargas Daily Serum, which is actually really reasonable considering how concentrated it is! She calls it green juice for your complexion.

Favourite UK brand? I adore everything about Miller Harris, from the elegant illustrations on the bottles to the lush fragrances. I’d happily fill my apartment with their candles, soaps, and scents!

How do you take care of your skin? Ah, I am not as good as I should be. I wish I got regular facials but I don’t. I use an exfoliator a few times a week and apply a face oil and eye cream morning and night. Once a week, usually Sunday evenings, I apply a great mask—currently using June Jacobs Papaya Purifying Mask.

JOLIEPLACE OSKIA SPA, LONDON

Oskia Spa, London A quintessentially British brand, OSKIA goes so far as to take its name from archaic English. (Appropriately enough, it’s a combination of ‘delivering nutrients’ and ‘beauty.’) The stylish skincare line formulates all its products in Britain using 98% natural ingredients. All their creations are free of artificial chemicals, parabens, and silicones. Oh, and their packaging is gorgeous—simple, elegant, and modern. Their flagship spa in Covent Garden reflects this. I popped by earlier this month to try one of their bespoke therapies.

box! Spa manager Holly Webster started my treatment with a neck massage that helps to release tension, align the body, and kickstart the lymphatic system. After gently removing my eye make-up, she used OSKIA’s Perfect Cleanser to double cleanse my skin. Perfect, indeed—this rich balm contains prebiotics and fatty acids that deeply purify and decongest the skin. After applying it neat, Holly used a little warm water to create a milk, then massaged it into my skin and removed with a warm cloth.

Designed by celebrity facialist Abigail James, OSKIA’s treatment menu focuses on luxurious therapies that are customized to fit each client’s needs. I was lucky enough to try out the spa’s popular Signature Glow Facial.

Next, Holly used the Micro Exfoliating Balm to buff away dead skin cells. The balm contains tiny granules of MSM (Methyl Sufonyl Methane to be precise), which is the most bio-available form of mineral sulphur. MSM spurs collagen production, helping skin retain its strength and suppleness.

I began by filling out forms that specified my particular skin conditions and concerns, as well as my skin type and skincare routine. I noted that I have combination skin with areas of slight congestion and dry patches—nothing too unmanageable. I also warned her that my skincare routine was going to need a bigger

JOLIEMAG

By then, my skin was thoroughly prepared for extraction. Don’t be alarmed: this is not as scary as it sounds. While fragranced steam was projected onto my face to open my pores, Holly gave me a relaxing head massage that further eased my tension.

light serum softens dark circles, de-puffs, and smoothes out the appearance of fine wrinkles.

Once my pores were ready for action, Holly began focusing on areas of congestion, removing the comodones (blackheads to you and me) using gentle pressure. Although not entirely pleasant, Holly was so expert that I was left with minimal irritation. She finished with a toner to close my pores.

By this point, you’d think my skin would be fully pampered. But no—Webster followed with a suite of finishing products. First, a light layer of Nutri-Active Day Cream, followed by the Get Up & Glow™ radiance-boosting serum. This miracle product uses youth-boosting nutrients and polypeptides to brighten skin while also protecting against everyday environmental damage. The secret to its instantly luminizing effect: mica, a naturally shimmery pigment.

Next came my favourite part: the facial massage, which is designed to lift, firm, and contour. With the help of OSKIA’s Skin-Smoothing Massage Candle and warm rose-scented oil, Holly used acupressure techniques to stimulate blood flow. In addition to smelling luscious, the oil delivered nourishing beeswax and hydrating coconut oil.

Holly then gently propped me into a sitting position and worked the warm oil from the candle into the shoulders. This gentle sensation made the transition back to reality that much more bearable.

Webster followed the massage with the Renaissance Mask, which has passion fruit alpha-hydroxy acids and papaya enzymes to dissolve expired cells and uncover fresh skin. While it was working its magic, she treated my hands and arms to an exfoliation and massage.

I left OSKIA’s lovely boutique spa feeling giddily relaxed, and with plump, glowing skin to boot. The best part? Learning how to incorporate the OSKIA products into my (admittedly overstuffed) skincare regimen.

Once the mask was removed, Holly toned my skin once more and worked a layer of EyeWonder™ around my eyes. The

JOLIESHOPPING A FAMILY AFFAIR

A Family Affair

In honour of our newly expanded JolieBox family, we have selected our favourite products from each of our headquarters: France, Spain—and now—America! 1.

£28

2. BEAUTY FLASH BALM

£34

CLARINS French skincare at its best. This classic nourishes skin and leaves it primed for makeup (and you’ll never get that peeling and bobbling effect that can happen with other products). The creamy formula has olive extract to smooth skin, plus bisabolol to brighten. Try using it as a face mask, too.

1. ALMOND MILK CONCENTRATE

L’OCCITANE This nice hefty glass bottle has been our saviour this autumn. We love how the rich, sumptuous formula sinks into skin easily. As with most L’Occitane products, the fragrance is fresh, but never overpowering. Almond protein triggers collagen production that helps to plump and firm skin. (Translation: it defies gravity one slather at a time!) loccitane.co.uk

3. HOOLA BRONZING POWDER

2.

£23.50

BENEFIT San Francisco-based Benefit’s boxed blushers and bronzers are a firm favourite at JolieBox HQ. The highly pigmented formula blends in easily and each little box lasts (quite literally) a lifetime. We’re particularly smitten with Hoola, the rare bronzer that doesn’t have shimmer or glitter. The matte shade is great for adding warmth to the face and for contouring cheek bones.

Sweet yet soft and sensual, Zara’s perfume is the perfect balance of rose, sandalwood, vanilla, and caramel. The Oriental scent lasts from morning till night and works for any occasion. This gem is the best-kept secret on High Street...until now!

zara.com 5. LARGER THAN LIFE EYELINER

NARS

£17

NARS is a perennial trendsetter. Their colours are some of the best in the business, and these eyeliners are staples for any make-up bag. The intense formula glides on easily but leaves a budge-proof finish. Via Veneto is an intense black—perfect for smokey eyes. Abbey Road, a vibrant cobalt blue, and Rue de Rivoli, a mossy green, are two lovely ways to play around with colour this season.

AGUA DE COLONIA CONCENTRADA This unisex cologne has kept its original formula since 1912, making it one of the oldest perfume houses in Spain. JOLIESTYLE

BRICK LANE, LONDON

Georgie This red-haired lady embodies everything that is autumn. We love the berry-coloured beanie—on-trend and practical! Her statement rusty red lip, courtesy of MAC’s Dubonnet, is a shade that quickly made its way onto our autumn wish list. For the rest of the look, Georgie used UK favourite Rimmel London’s black liquid liner to play up her eyes and dusty pink blusher to brighten her cheeks. Street style beauty at its best.

1 With this month’s “Beauty in the City” theme, we thought it would be fitting to choose London hot spot Brick Lane and hunt down inspiring beauties. A central hipster hangout, Brick Lane is home to mile-long strips of Asian restaurants and vintage shops with retro finds, beckoning young beauties from all over. A couple of them had us turning heads...literally.

Lauren Brick Lane personified. This risktaker stopped us dead in our tracks with those lashes and lips. We had to find out how she created this gothicinspired look. The shocking lashes were from online shop Lashes Direct, while the lip colour is by indie brand Lime Crime. In addition to Boots No.7 foundation, Lauren created bold brows with the help of black Rimmel London pencil. Loving this feisty look.

JOLIESTYLE

BRICK LANE, LONDON

Lauren L We happened to find two beauty crushes with the same name on this crazy busy street. Their looks, however, could not be more different. Lauren L rocks a striking combo of platinum blonde hair and a commanding bold lip. She kept her base make-up simple with Bobbi Brown foundation and blusher with Bourjois mascara for major volumised lashes. Oh, and those lips? She’s wearing a few swipes of MAC’s Likable lipstick.

3

Street Style, Brick Lane

Jessica We first noticed Jessica because of her amazingly long, luscious hair. (In fact, we literally chased her down the street, fighting our way through oodles of people.) She is keeping things lowmaintenance with a combination of natural dewy skin and winged black liner by Chanel. Jessica used MAC Concealer to mask any imperfections and completed the wide-eyed look with a few lashings of Maybelline mascara.

BEHIND THE BRAND STILA

Learn more about stila at stila.co.uk and shop all their must-haves.

Stila

With on-trend shades and genius formulations, this California-based brand proves that pro-quality makeup can be seriously fun and ridiculously easy. It’s no wonder that stila is headquartered in Los Angeles. Launched in 1994, the brand takes a California cool approach to beauty, with products that are cutting edge and rigorously tested, but always wearable and approachable. Over the years, they’ve developed a line of user-friendly products for everything from natural, “what make-up?” looks to more adventurous creations. Sarah Lucero, the brand’s Global Director of Creative Artistry, creates signature looks for designers like Rebecca Minkoff and Betsey Johnson, then translates the runway into products for the rest of us. Their products also feature clever packaging—think flat palettes that pack easily and pen-style lip gloss applicators. (And yes, we love those wonderfully whimsical ‘stila girl’ illustrations.) Here are some of the brand’s cult favourites that make excellent additions to anyone’s vanity.

Stay All Day Foundation & Concealer

Convertible Color Lip & Cheek cream Who doesn’t love a good two-in-one? Stila’s award-winning lip and cheek color is a sheer, blendable formula that comes in nine dreamy shades, from petal pink Petunia to crimson Poppy. Use your fingertips or a brush for a goof-proof application.

Launched in August, stila’s latest skin perfector is a great combo tool: a velvety, full-coverage foundation with a matching concealer hidden in the cap. There’s a mirror for easy application, making it a cinch to touch up on the go.

BEHIND THE BRAND STILA

Lip Glazes These glosses are delightfully shiny but never sticky. But the real reason they have such a loyal following? The smart, pen-style applicator that twists to release just the right amount of pigment. The semi-sheer hues flatter all skin tones.

Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner “Everyone needs a good inky liquid liner in their bag,” says Lucero. We tend to agree—and this is the one to carry around. The marker-style tip (like a thin Sharpie for your eyelids) is easy to control, and true to its name, it really does stay put. As much as we love basic black, we’ve been experimenting with bolder colours this fall—bright green Moss and rich Indigo.

Eyeshadow Palettes Every season, stila comes out with a new batch of highly covetable palettes, each of which includes a rainbow of complementary shades. New for Christmas 2012, their Written in the Stars Palette features 12 wearable tones ranging from shimmery champagnes to peachy pinks.

Stila Holiday 2012 In addition to that dreamy palette, the brand has a collection of new Christmas gift products. Our picks? Their Seeing Stars Smudge Stick Set, with five vibrant shades, and their Christmas Brush Set, which includes a powder brush, concealer brush, eyeshadow brush, liner brush, and foundation brush—everything you need to create any look!

OJON

My (already thin) hair has been going through a bit of a dry, weak stage over the last few months. After some necessary research, I discovered Ojon. The Volume Advance Shampoo and Conditioner are rich in wheat protein and sesame seed oil, both of which penetrate deep into the hair shaft to repair and seal the cuticle. After just a few washes I noticed my hair felt stronger and—more importantly—looked super shiny and volumised.

LAURA MERCIER There is something about this time of year that makes me want to rock a bold lip. This punchy raspberry-red (or ‘brick rose’ as Laura calls it) has been my favourite all autumn. It’s a beautiful pigmented formula that has olive oil and vitamin E to keep lips feeling comfortable and hydrated throughout the day. The metallic packaging makes me feel very posh indeed.

I’m a little late to the party on this versatile product, but boy do I love it! I’ve been using it as my everyday toner, and I also keep it on my desk and spritz it on my face throughout the day. As the fresh grape, mint, and rosemary hit my face, I immediately relax. I’m not really a matte kind of girl, so I’ve been using this to set my make-up—it gives skin a lovely dewy look.

I am always keen to try new skincare so I jumped on the chance to try Dr. Nabet’s Rivitaxin Cream, part of the brand’s anti-ageing line. I am a little paranoid about fine lines and wrinkles, especially around my eyes, so I like knowing that this product specifically helps prevents those signs of ageing. I am keen to try the Eye Contour cream next.

RITESSENS

8. CLEANSING OIL

This product, which was featured in our October JolieBox, came into my life at an opportune moment. I was due to repurchase a new face wash when this godsend landed on my desk. I have quite sensitive skin and am typically wary of trying out new products, but since Ritessens is 100% natural and organic I didn’t hesitate. I am pretty much confident I won’t be shopping around for another cleanser anytime soon.

6. HIGH INTENSITY 24- ‘HEAVEN’ HEALING BODY BALM

BLISS

My obsession with Bliss began a few years ago when I discovered their body butters, and I haven’t looked back since. I love everything about the brand, from their packaging to their quirky product names. Winter can be taxing on my skin so every evening after I bathe, I slather on this thick cream to lock in moisture. It’s a rich formulation but sill smells light and fresh. I will be reaching for this all season long.

I got a sample of this from the Content Beauty & Wellbeing Store in Mayfair, one of my favourite hidden spots. The emulsifying cleansing oil leaves my skin clean, soft, and glowing—I was kind of hoping it wouldn’t work so well as it’s quite expensive and now I’ll have to buy it. I’m also using the Radiant Light Facial Serum, which has made my skin progressively plumper and softer to touch over the past five weeks.

9. FOREVER PINK LIP AND CHEEK STAIN

JANE IREDALE

After all the hype around this product, I thought it was about time to give it a try. I can happily say that it’s now my go-to in the mornings. It’s really moisturising and comfortable on the skin and leaves a lovely radiant finish. 9.

LOUISE FROM SPRINKLE OF GLITTER

Louise from Sprinkle of Glitter How did you get into blogging?

a daily basis though are Zoella, AThriftyMrs, ABeautifulMess, LilyPebbles, ViviannaDoesMakeup, EssieButton, LipSoFactso, CupcakesClothes, Bubblegarm, Charlotte’sWeb... (I’m a little obsessed with beauty videos—eep!)

I started blogging three years ago when I bought a ‘fixer upper’ house with my husband. I was reading a lot of interior design blogs, decided I wanted be part of the action too, and gave it a whirl. After six months, our house was finished but I was in love with blogging and quickly steered it towards one of my biggest passions: beauty.

What makes Sprinkle of Glitter different? (Other than the fact that you’re hil-arious!) Haha, why thank you! Sprinkle of Glitter is a beauty blog with a lot of personality. Whilst at its heart it will always be about beauty, I love to use it as a space to talk about love, life, bargains, and babies. For me it’s kind of like an outlet of my mind and a place I can talk about all the things that would probably bore my husband! I’m also really keen to promote a sense of community through my blog. I encourage readers (or Sprinklerinos as I like to call them) to create an online support network for each other and the comment section is always a very friendly and welcoming place to be. It’s a warm fuzzy all around!

What do you do in ‘real life?’ In ‘real life,’ I am incredibly blessed. My YouTube channel and blog help support our family and allow me to stay at home with my 1-year old daughter. Blogging as a career is fantastic. It allows me to do something I really enjoy and make a living from doing it. It really doesn’t feel like work to me at all and if I won the lottery, I would still happily chitchat away about skincare regimes and sparkly nail polish..

Favourite blogs and bloggers? This is such a hard question because I read so, so many! The blogs I check on

Favourite places to shop?

What is your best beauty tip?

Being plus-sized, clothes shopping can be a little more challenging than I would like. I have found great pieces in ASOS Curve, Next, H&M, New Look, River Island, and Primark. I am 100% a High Street brand kind of a gal.

My best beauty tip is a classic: cleanse, tone, and moisturise before bed. It can be quite a chore (and I too am guilty of a quick face wipe jobby), but it will pay dividends in the morning. You will be allowing your skin to breathe and replenish as well as saving your pillowcases!

Beauty-wise, I’m not too loyal. I love a splurge in Boots or Superdrug, but equally I enjoy the luxury of perusing the makeup counters in department stores beauty halls. I love the way all the products are laid out and the way everything gleams in the light, seducing you to buy gorgeous things and take them home with you in crisp, new bags. Heaven.

Skincare/makeup wish list?

1 Liz Earle Signature Foundation 2 YSL Glossy Stain 3 Lush Gorgeous Facial Moisturiser 4 Illamasqua Medium Pencil in Vow 5 Pretty much everything from NARS!

Favourite beauty product of the moment?

We’ve noticed Baby Glitter is back on YT! What’s it like being a yummy mummy blogger?

Absolutely my YSL Shocking Mascara. It makes my lashes look fantastic with its lengthening and thickening magic!

It’s a lot of fun! I really enjoy documenting Darcy’s life and sharing it with people who enjoy it. It’s so lovely to look back on her early babyhood and watch the moments that we might otherwise have missed. I also hope that one day she’ll look back and delight in all the crazy adventures we went on.
