JOLIESTA OF THE MONTH
Susan Chyi
SUSAN CHYI
Susan Chyi was born in Penang, a serene little island state just off the west coast of Malaysia. At 17, she went to London School of Economics to do her degree in Economics and graduated 3 years later in the midst of the dot-com boom. She then set up her popular make up company, Jelly Pong Pong.
What made you want to start Jelly Pong Pong? I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur, to be in complete control of my career and my passion from the very beginning was in cosmetics. I started very early on by distributing different brands from the States and Japan, but without having a say in price, packaging and quality control, it made planning retail strategies really difficult. Jelly Pong Pong, which caters to the young & fun at heart, was a natural progression once I felt confident enough in my ability to manage my own brand. Having managed to sell the company last year to a group of investors that have been courting us for a year, I took 6 months off, did copious amounts of backpacking and went home to Malaysia to rest. Now I feel ready for a restart with So Susan Cosmetics.
Tell us about your new So Susan collection? So Susan is where colour meets science, fusing wrinkle-relief technology into your daily cosmetics regime. Our breakthrough serum-based foundations are not only made to cover flaws and imperfections, but are formulated to work on the skin using a patented combination of peptides, amino acids and antioxidants to reduce signs of fatigue & aging- letting your makeup work twice as hard for you. JOLIESTA OF THE MONTH SUSAN CHYI
Start from the inside, eat well, drink lots of water, have plenty of sleep and fit exercise into your lifestyle. Oh and moisturise, moisturise! Doesn’t have to be anything fancy- I use good old fashioned Nivea.
I’m also currently working on a range of Luminous Blushes that combine 2 textures and apply like a silky powdercream which lasts for 8 hours whether you have dry or oily skin.
What are your top beauty products of all time?
What advice would you give to anybody interested in getting into the industry?
I can’t live without Diptyque’s Luxurious Hand Balm, YSL’s Forever Youth Liberator serum & Rosebud Smith’s Rosebud Salve. As for colour, I only use Jelly Pong Pong- I love reds, so the Lip Cushion in Crush and Supermodel Stain in Cupcake Pout are my favourites.
Do your homework, either work or intern for a cosmetics company, or a PR company specialising in beauty. It opens your eyes to what a fickle, fastpaced industry this is, and prepares you for the hours you need to put in to make a brand work.
What is your best beauty tip? Having great skin makes such a difference to your cosmetics regime. Colours go on better, truer, and you emanate a glow and confidence that no amount of concealers or foundations can give.

Skin3 London Nestled in London’s Swiss Cottage is skincare specialist salon, Skin3. The salon uses the latest technology in skin analysis to create a tailored course of treatment designed specifically for you. I was lucky enough to spend an afternoon at this fascinating salon and test out one of their cutting edge treatments; the Active Vitamin Facial.
paigns!) Manisha then talked me through the other images, such as areas of dehydration as well as bacteria and congestion in the skin where spots are likely to form. Being the skincare geek that I am, I eagerly soaked up all this information. After reviewing the results from the scan, Manisha had a better understanding of what the best treatment and products would be to combat my skin concerns.
After meeting my lovely therapist, Manisha, the first step of treatment begins with a skin analysis consultation. This comprises of a Visia machine-, a high-tech camera that takes powerful images, scanning the face and revealing any hidden damage below the surface of the skin.
I was then taken downstairs to the treatment rooms where I quickly became relaxed by the salon’s signature ‘welcome touch’, a relaxing foot massage to help put you at ease. The first phase which prepares the skin for the active stages of the treatment starts with a combination of Pre-Cleansing Oil and Hydrating Exfoliant Masque applied to remove any make-up and provide a micro exfoliating effect.
The first image revealed my level of sun damage and although Manisha assured me this was the standard response, I was pretty shocked to see how much damage had been done completely unaware. The image basically exposed what looked like an exaggerated amount of freckles all over my face (we’ve all seen the Boots cam-

With skin primed, the Active phase of the treatment takes place. Manisha chose a Vitamin Serum that best works for combating oxidative stress and normalises sebum flow to effectively treat the congestion in my skin. After applying the serum, a probe which emits Sonophoresis (which is a low frequency ultrasound) and Iontophoresis (a modified electric current) was moved over my skin. The duo currents that runs through the probe allows the serum to penetrate deeper into the skin making the product more effective and allowing for more sustainable results. The next step of the Active phase involves the serum being re-applied to the skin with an Alginate Mask, a plaster mould that sits on top of the serum and acts as a conductor for the electric current. Metal clips are attached to the mask as the Iontophoresis current runs through the entire mask penetrating the serum even deeper. The mask goes over the eyes and mouth (if you feel comfortable with this) which are usually the areas that show signs of ageing first and are often not able to be treated so locally. This all may sound a little scary, but rest assured the most you’ll feel is a light tingling. While the mask is on for about 20 minutes, Manisha treated me to a lovely hand massage which was so relaxing I very nearly drift off.

I really rated the 3- step system; a personalised skin analysis, an effective yet totally relaxing treatment followed by a minimakeover leaving me with fresh-faced glowing skin!
The mask is then removed and the skin is treated to a nourishing Environ Cquence Eye Gel and Advanced Vitamin Skin Therapy Moisturiser. I was then taken up to the Jane Iredale make-up station where the Amazing Base SPF 20 mineral pow-

JOLIEQUESTION
CAN RUWAY BE WEARABLE ?
Can Runway beWearable?
Flicking through Vogue and Elle’s latest Fashion Week scoop is amongst one of our favourite things to do. However, when you see the latest season’s runway makeup looks how often do you think ‘oh that would be perfect for a first date’ or ‘that coral-green colour clash is just the thing for after-dinner drinks’? With all the dramatic, bold trends fighting for editorial attention on the catwalk, the chances are, probably not. With this in mind, we have made it our mission here at JolieBox HQ to take inspiration from these amazing trends, but try to adapt them in a more accessible, wearable way.
PURPLE HAZE The first trend is one of this season’s most daring; purple. From plum lips to lilac cheeks, it’s everywhere. Of course wearing a matte lilac lipstick is not the usual ‘everyday look’, so our Editor, Grace, has taken her hand to recreating this purple trend. Using purple as an accent or using softer, sheerer versions of the shade is the way to go. A dusting of lilac shadow over the lid can add a pretty, romantic touch. Plum eyeliner, like this liquid liner by Chantecaille or this pencil by Chanel is perfect for defining eyes without using black that can sometimes come across too harsh. In keeping with the colour family, Mac’s Breath of Plum blusher and this sheer(ish) lipgloss by Illamasqua is a great way to play with statement colours without the commitment (and guts) of a bold, brave lipstick.

CAN RUWAY BE WEARABLE ?
NEW GOTHIC Our second look is inspired by the runway’s modern twist on the traditional gothic trend. ‘New Gothic’ incorporates heavy, copper eye makeup with matching bold brown- copper lips. Editorial Assistant, Cat made it her mission to bring this provocative trend to the everyday lives of our JolieStas. Using something like this Paintpot by Mac (Indianwood) provides a good base for you to work other shades into, creating this warm coppertoned haze around the eyes. Apply the Paintpot to the lid and underneath the lashline then buff in a warmtoned brown making sure to blend well so there are no harsh lines. Line the waterline with a gel liner (Bobbi Brown) and finish with a sheer balm on the lips to keep everything modern and not too try hard. To fully embrace this trend, Mac’s lipstick in Siss would tick all the fashion-boxes!

2.NAIL PAINT IN NAVY
Bringing the ‘hot cloth cleanser’ to the masses, Eve Lom is a skincare wizard. This thick- delightful yet somewhat medicinal smelling- formulation dissolves immediately into the skin. Not only removing all make-up (including waterproof mascara) the muslin cloth that accompanies the cleanser acts as a gentle exfoliant, removing dead skin cells leaving fresh, radiant, renewed skin.
Set up by Barry Mero in the 80’s London, his bold, outrageous colours are still reflected in the Barry M stands that stretch the UK today. The formulation of these polishes is great- easy to apply, nice and opaque and they stick around longer than the price tag would have you believe. This navy shade is perfect for adding a stylish and sophisticated touch to any outfit.

LAUREN STEVENSON
PR Director of my-wardrobe.com
How did you start working at my-wardrobe? I started working for my-wardrobe back in 2007 when I worked at Hill & Knowlton and my-wardrobe was just my client. I was then asked to join the business in-house as PR Director to grow the PR here in the UK and globally.
What does a typical day at the office involve? A typical day starts with a latte from Pret and then catching up with the day’s news online and in the newspapers and magazines. It’s imperative to understand what is in the media agenda every day and to be fully aware of the developments and movements within the fashion and retail industries. The rest of the day consists of meetings with the UK team to review campaign activities, calls with the international teams based in Australia, Dubai and Oslo and meetings with editors, stylists, designers and journalists. I work very closely with the buying and marketing teams so I spend a lot of time reviewing and planning activity around the new collections.
What is your favourite fashion item of the moment? My favourite fashion item is a black Acne Rita jacket with a cream Shearling collar.

Working in a global consumer agency enabled me to develop an understanding of how PR fitted it the marketing mix and the importance of making a commercial impact through every piece of activity. CARNABY STREET, LONDON
For our special Fashion Week issue, we thought we would mix things up a bit and take inspiration from the beauties strolling around the streets of London! Our JolieMag Editor, Grace, hit the aptly fashionable Carnaby Street to take snaps of girls that embody why it is we love British Street Style. By pure coincidence, a lot of the girls are wearing make-up by British brandssome could call it fate!
2
1 El Bernardes
Tasha Franken
‘Grunge-chic’ personified. Firstly, what a head of fabulous hair that girl is rocking! We love El’s thick, full fringe and big bouncy locks that cleverly frame her face. Flying the British flag high, El’s nod to a lived-in smokey eye using a Topshop eyeliner and Rimmel mascara extenuates her amazing eyes. Her Benefit foundation gives a natural dewy glow that looks great with her pink blusher by Avon, adding a healthy flush to the cheeks. Oh- and we love those tats!
Tasha’s classic beauty is reflected in this simple yet effective make-up. This look is all about the eyes with this flick of Bobbi Brown’s gel liner to her upper lashline, framing the eyes and creating a pretty, old-school glamour look. To keep things modern, Tasha keeps the rest of her make-up understated with a natural looking soft blusher from Stila. Gorgeous!

4 Lydia Pang
Clarissa Nuztas
Wow! It takes a lot of guts (and the right colouring) to go out wearing black eyeliner, statement black eyebrows and matching black lipstick. But Lydia has smashed it. Her long black hair has been bleached blonde at the very tips giving the ombre look a modern twist. Lydia’s used the same Barry M eyeliner for her exaggerated flicks and dramatic brows. With no blusher, her black lipstick from Illamasqua breaks all conventions of any timid ‘English Rose’- we are in awe!
The first thing that attracted us to this Mexican beauty was that fab hair! The second was those lips. Clarisa’s big curls are gripped to the side in this effortlessly-cool do. With not much other make-up, her bright red lipstick from Mac enhances her South American colouring while keeping things laid-back and understated- we think she is adorable!

How did you first get into blogging and why? I started following fashion and beauty blogs and got so inspired from so many different sources that I decided to give it a go! From blogging, I then began a YouTube channel because I felt it was a lot more interactive and visual, but I love both blogging and YouTube for different reasons.
How does it feel knowing you’ve had over 39 million views on YouTube?! It’s insane! I can’t even comprehend that amount of people- it’s amazing but also scary! I try to take onboard all the comments in regards to what my viewers like to see and what they don’t like so I can keep my channel as interesting as possible. It’s amazing to have so much support and I’m so grateful. It still feels weird when people who I know watch me though, like my mum, she’s so supportive but I don’t think she understands it all still!
