AIBA President’s Message Historic Year for Boxing and for AIBA Welcome to this final edition of the AIBA Boxing News magazine for 2008. It has been a memorable year for AIBA and for international boxing and I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all those who have participated. Nine Olympic Games continental qualifying events, the incredibly successful 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, the AIBA Youth World Championships Guadalajara 2008, the AIBA Women’s World Championships Ningbo City 2008, the AIBA World Cup Moscow 2008 and the inaugural AIBA Annual Awards and AIBA Forum made for a very special year, a year in which AIBA has grown significantly. Each tournament proved to be monumental step in AIBA’s continued reform. Not only did athletes’ endeavours bring joy to faces both in the ring and around, but competing in the knowledge that AIBA is successfully implementing its reforms, has brought satisfaction to all involved in our beautiful sport.

AIBA has received congratulations from many different quarters including the Olympic Movement but we can’t stop. We must capitalize on this momentum and realize our dream of taking boxing to the top of the sporting world. There are still many projects and challenges which await us. The AIBA Boxing Academy, the World Series of Boxing and a proposal to include Women’s Boxing in the Olympic Games are some of the exciting developments in store for us in 2009.

3 AIBA Boxing News 4th Edition 2008 - October - November - December
AIBA Awards Ceremony Taylor and Enkhbat named AIBA’s Best Boxers of 2008 The International Boxing Association proudly announced in December that Badar-Uugan Enkhbat (MGL) and Katie Taylor (IRL) were named as the 2008 AIBA Best Male and Female Boxer of Year at the inaugural AIBA Annual Awards Ceremony at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Moscow, Russia. Enkhbat claimed gold in the 54kg Beijing Olympic Games to became Mongolia’s first Olympic boxing gold medallist (out of eight Olympic Games, Mongolia had previously won two bronze medals - 1988, 1992) and second ever gold medallist in its history. The 23-year-old is also the Asian champion and was a silver medallist at the AIBA World Championships Chicago 2007. Taylor, meanwhile, defended her AIBA Women’s World Championships 60kg title with victory at the 2008 edition in Ningbo City, China in November. Taylor convincingly beat China’s Dong Cheng 13:2 in an incredible display of speed and power in the final and was named Boxer of the Tournament. When accepting the award Taylor told the audience in Moscow, “I would like to thank AIBA for this very special award, it means a lot not only to me but also to all the female boxers who practice our beautiful sport. Women’s boxing is amazing at the moment, the level is increasing and
Katie Taylor is one of the most recognized athletes in women’s boxing
the recent Women’s World Championships were a perfect example of the very high standard we find ourselves competing in. This award is great recognition of the excellent progress women’s boxing has made in recent years and I would like to dedicate it to all the female athletes around the world who are training hard and competing in the hope that we will be able to participate in the 2012 Olympic Games.” In other awards, China’s Li Qingsheng was named AIBA Referee and Judge of the Year, Cuba’s Pedro Roque Otano AIBA Coach of the Year while Terry Smith (WAL) received a special recognition award for his performance as the head Technical Delegate at the 2008 Olympic Games. The award winners were selected by the AIBA Executive Bureau which consists of Executive Committee members from each Continent: AIBA President Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu (TPE), AIBA Executive Vice-President Mr. Gofur Rahkimov (UZB), AIBA Vice-President Dr. Humbert Furgoni (FRA), Dr. Abdallah Bessalem (ALG) and Chairperson of the AIBA Medical Commission Dr. Charles Butler (USA). The selection criteria was based on all international boxers’ performances both inside and outside of the ring.

AIBA Youth World Championships Guadalajara 2008 Frank Izla (64kg), Rey Recio (75kg), Jose Angel Larduet (81kg) and Erislandy Savon (91kg) all stood on the top step of the medal podium and were joined by two from the home nation - Oscar Rafael Valdez (57kg) and Oscar Molina (69kg).
Izla and Savon expectedly won their finals against Irishman Jamie Kavannagh and Ivan Dichko from Kazakhstan respectively while the last two bouts of the tournament finished with the same score 9:1 as Molina and Dawejko claimed the honours.
Other youth world champions were India’s Nanao Singh Thokchom (48kg), Jonathan Gonzalez (51kg) from Puerto Rico, Russia’s Magomed Kurbanov (54kg), Ireland’s Raymond Moylett (60kg) and Joseph Dawejko (+91kg) of the United States.
Meanwhile, Puerto Rico’s national senior champion Gonzalez surprised by convincingly beating Cuba’s Yuniel Robles 12:5 in the 51kg final while local hero Valdez left Maxim Dadashev (RUS) scoreless in the 57kg final, much to the enjoyment of the boisterous ‘home’ fans at the Unidad Deportiva López Mateos.
In a tournament ruled by Cuban boxers, Irishman Moylett caused the biggest upset in the 60kg division by beating Daniyar Yelelussinov (KAZ) against popular expectation.
The next AIBA World Youth Championships are due to be held in 2010 and will act as a qualifying event for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games.
India’s Thokchom was also sensational in the final of the 48kg class where he outclassed Russian youth champion Grigoriy Nikolaychuk 15:5.

AIBA World Cup December 10 - 14, 2008 - Moscow, Russia Cuba Top World Cup Podium Boxing super powers Cuba and Russia claimed six and three gold medals respectively at the 1st AIBA World Cup Moscow 2008 which was held in the Megasport Sport Palace in Moscow, Russia in December. brought the curtain down on an exhilarating year for AIBA and boxing which featured Olympic qualifying tournaments, the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and the Youth World Championships and Women’s World Championships.
With prize money of $10,000 up for grabs for each champion, and $5,000 for each runner-up it was a healthy pay-day for two of boxing’s proudest nations. Cuba’s brilliant performance at the AIBA end-of-year event saw the central American country total eight medals with six gold and two silvers from its eight boxers making for a total prize money pool of $70,000. Russia finished second on the medal tally with three gold, a silver and five bronze while Armenia and the Philippines tied for third with one gold apiece.
With a seeding system, where the top two seeds were split in the draw, in operation for the first time in AIBA history, Cuba will now hold its head high following an excellent performance in Moscow, during a week which also featured the inaugural AIBA Annual Awards and Forum, where Cuban coach Pedro Roque Otano received the Best Coach of the Year Award.
The inaugural AIBA World Cup, which changed from its former team’s event format to an invitation based individual competition,

AIBA World Cup AIBA World Cup Moscow 2008 Finals by Weight Category 51kg At 20-year’s-old Russia’s Misha Aloyan boxed beyond his years to complete an epic journey on his way to his second title of the year. The Czech Grand Prix winner produced an incredible performance to beat Cuban second seed and Olympic Games silver medallist Hernandez Laffita 20:6 in a repeat of the Czech tournament final which he won 20:11. It completed an astonishing run which saw Aloyan beat the top seed Vincenzo Picardi (ITA) in the semifinals and concede a total of only 11 points in three bouts. “It was my second bout against (Hernandez Laffita), so I knew what I had to do,” Aloyan said. “I prepared myself psychologically before the bout, so upon entering the ring I was already mentally prepared to win. I decided that I have to win and I did! During the bout I tried to pre-empt, to be faster than him.”
48kg Harry Tanamor, 31, added a World Cup title to his illustrious career after proving too clinical for the Cuban and Pan American champion Yampier Hernandez winning 15:7. Tanamor, a 2003 World Championship bronze medallist and 2008 President’s Cup winner stunned Hernandez, the 2008 Olympic bronze medallist, with superior speed and execution. “I am elated to have won this title, it means a lot to me,” Tanamor said. “I think I may have caught (Yampier Hernandez) on a bad day but I also had to perform well. This is a proud moment for me and I’m now looking forward to going back home to be welcomed by my fans, friends and family to celebrate this victory.”
54kg Second-seed Yankiel Leon Alarcon from Cuba lived up to his billing as the favourite in the final by completely outclassing Moldova’s Veaceslav Gojan. The match up saw the 2008 Olympic Games silver medallist versus the bronze medallist and Leon Alarcon, 26, proved the pundits right with an awesome display of finesse, conceding only one point in the opening round against 25-yearold Gojan, who had earlier knocked the 2007 world champion and top seed Sergey Vodopyanov out of the competition in the semifinals. “Everything was fine, I am extremely satisfied with the result,” the Cuban national champ said. “What helped me to win is all my hard training and, of course, my trainer. I am very grateful to him. The bout was difficult and exhausting because I had to take on an Olympian who won bantamweight bronze at the Beijing Games but I managed to do the job I had set out to do.”
57kg With both top seeds out of the tournament in the first round, the 57kg division was the only weight category not to include at least one seed in the final. The second Cuba v Russia bout of the day saw Pan American champion Idel Torriente outlast Russia’s national champ Sergey Ignatyev 12:8 with a storming last round which the 22-year-old claimed 4:1. “This victory is very important for me, it was my dream,” Torriente said. “The support of my coach and my team helped me a lot. Now I can concentrate on an exciting 2009 which includes the world championships in Milan.”
60kg One of the closest bouts of the day saw 2007 57kg world champion Albert Selimov of Russia put on a devastating display of power to claim a 12:10 win over top seed Hu Qing of China. Down 9:8 at the end of round three, Selimov overcame a distinct reach disadvantage before warming to the local support, charging home 4:1 in the final round to claim Russia’s second gold of the tournament. “The main difficulty was the fact that my opponent is taller than me and kept me at a distance,” 23-year-old Selimov said. “But I was prepared for it, so I trained with taller boxers before the World Cup and everything worked out well. Our coach Alexander Lebzyak took us off the team which competed at the European Championships in Liverpool so that we could rest and prepare for the World Cup here in Moscow, which was very important for us.”
23 AIBA Boxing News 4th Edition 2008 - October - November - December
AIBA World Cup 64kg Cuba’s third gold of the day came when second seed Roniel Iglesias Sotolongo, the 2008 Olympic bronze medallist, completely outclassed Mongolia’s MunkhErdene Uranchimeg 16:2. Uranchimeg, who had beaten top seed Alexis Vastine (FRA) in the semis, was no match for the Cuban national champ only scoring a point in the second and final rounds.
67kg
75kg The bout of the day saw Armenia’s Andranik Hakobyan sneak home against top seed Alfonso Blanco from Venezuela 10:9. The bout went point for point with the scores at 2:2 after the first round , 5:4 after the second, 7:7 after the third before Hakobyan claimed the decisive fourth. The win capped a remarkable tournament for 27-yearold Hakobyan who claimed his first gold medal in two years and his first AIBA competition victory in his career. “I am very happy. I had a very strong opponent, who was a World Championships finalist in Chicago but I was fully prepared for the bout and I knew I was going to win,” Hakobyan, whose last tournament success was the Grand Prix Usti nad Labem in 2006.
Another gold went Cuba’s way when top seed Carlos Banteaux Suarez outclassed 2008 President’s Cup champion Dilshod Mahmudov (UZB) 15:4. Banteaux Suarez, the Olympic silver medallist, was ahead 15:4 after the third round before shutting up shop in the last. “This bout was easier than I expected,” the 23-yearold said. “It was interesting to face Mahmudov as he is a tough opponent but I’m very proud of my victory, it’s a great honour for me.”
81kg Russia’s third and final gold medal came in the only final which featured the two top seeds with the mightily impressive Artur Beterbiev gaining his second successive win over world champion Abbos Atoev (UZB) in 2008. In a repeat of the AIBA World Championships Chicago 2007 final, which Atoev won 20:17, second seed Beterbiev was pumped up from the opening bell, riding on the huge support of the home fans to charge to an 8:2 lead thanks to an 8:0 run in the second round. The 23-year-old increased his lead to 15:3 after the third before closing out the memorable win for his third title of 2008, which also included victory at the Gee Tournament, where he beat Atoev in the fourth round. “It was not the first time that I faced my opponent so I was fully prepared for the bout in advance,” Beterbiev said. “I entered the ring determined to win but I was careful in the first round, trying to figure out my rival (Atoev led 2:0), and then I increased the tempo. I would not like to compare myself to a lion in the jungle but if you are strong, let the others fear.”
91kg and +91kg Cuba won the last two of their gold medals in the 91kg and +91kg with Osmai Acosta Duarte and Robert Alfonso Acea claiming the titles respectively courtesy of walkovers after the Ukraine’s Oleksandr Usyk (91kg) and Croatia’s Marko Tomasovic (+91kg) were ruled out with an injured shoulder and jaw respectively.

Ukraine dominates 2008 European Champs The 37th European Elite Championships, which was expertly hosted by the English Amateur Boxing Association, were held in Liverpool in November (615) with the Ukraine claiming the Team of the Tournament award and 57kg Olympic and new European champion Vasyl Lomachenko the Boxer of the Tournament award.
three boxers a great ovation for three of the most exciting boxers in the sport. They also got in behind England’s only boxer to reach a final, 54kg Luke Campbell from Hull. And the two-time national champion didn’t disappoint, claiming England’s first European amateur champion for 47 years after
beating 2003 World Championships bronze medallist Detelin Dalakliev on a countback after the Bulgarian tied the bout at 5:5 with seconds remaining in the contest. The result gives the 25-year-old 2004 Olympian consecutive European silver medals.
The 20-year-old Ukrainian headed a fantastic performance from the Eastern European squad, who collected four gold medals and one bronze medal on a finals night which saw all four of their boxers walk away victorious. Lomachenko, especially, was in sublime form, completing an excellent tournament where he only conceded six points in four bouts including a comfortable 7:1 win over Russia’s Araik Ambartsumov in the final. His award as the Best Boxer of the Tournament followed his Val Barker Trophy win, which is also awarded to the best boxer at the 2008 Olympic Games. Not far behind were his 75kg and 81kg compatriots Ivan Senay and Oleksandr Usyk who beat Russia’s Maxim Koptyakov and Siarhei Korneyev from the Belarus respectively with Usyk collecting the biggest winning margin on the night of 11:2. The Liverpool public inside the spectacular Echo Arena gave all

The 48kg winner’s podium (left to right): Silver - Jose de la Nieve Linares (ESP), Gold Hovhanncs Danielyan (ARM), Bronze - Eerhat Pehlivan (TUR) and Istvan Ungvari (HUN)
Equal to Ukraine’s medal count, in total at least, was regular powerhouse Russia who, after claiming nine gold and two silver in 2006, had to settle for two gold and three silver medals, highlighting the fact that there were plenty of new faces in the Russian squad. Russia’s two champions were 19-year-old national title holder Leonid Kostylev who won the 60kg title in his first international tournament by beating the 2006 bronze medallist Vazgen Safaryants of Belarus 7:3, and 24-year-old two-times 75kg national champion and 2005 World Elite Championships quarter finalist Egor Mekhontsev who beat Armenia’s Tsolak Ananikyan 9:2. Other countries to claim gold included Armenia (2), Belarus and Bulgaria with one apiece.
The Ukraine’s Oleksandr Usyk shows off his 81kg gold medal
In other key results, 21-year-old Hovhannes Danielyan claimed the first of two gold medals for Armenia in the first bout of the night in sensational circumstances after Spain’s José Kelvin De La Nieve was given a warning for a low blow with 18 seconds remaining in the bout. The warning, which earns two points to the opposition, saw Danielyan, a bronze medallist at the 2006 European Championships, move into the lead at 7:6, which proved to be the end result. Meanwhile, 19-year-old Salomo N’Tuve claimed Sweden’s first European Championship silver medal for more than 40 years after losing to the 25-year-old 2008 Olympian Georgiy Chygayev of the Ukraine 5:0.

European Youth and Junior Girl’s Championships Bright Future for Russia, Poland and Bulgaria The 1st European Youth and Junior Girl’s Championships were successfully completed in Yambol, Bulgaria in December (10-13) with Russia, Poland and hosts Bulgaria topping the Youth European Championships medal tally. Russia’s three gold, five silver and three bronze medals were closely followed by Poland’s three gold and five bronze medals. Bulgaria’s two gold, a silver and two bronze was enough for it to finish third on the medal tally but equal-fourth on the medal by total with the Ukraine having claimed one gold, two silver and four bronze and Turkey three silvers and two bronze medals.
A total of 12 countries claimed medals at the four-day Youth World Championships with Finland, Hungary and Wales rounding out the bottom of the table, claiming a bronze medal each. The week-long tournament (November 23-29) saw Azerbaijan claim six gold medals across the 11 weight divisions while Vastine, an Olympic bronze medallist from France, claimed the 64kg title by beating Nekrasov Searhei of Belarus 14:2.
Four countries, host nation Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, India, and Sri Lanka took part with full, 11-member teams while four continents - Europe, Asia, Africa, and America were represented.
