Olympic Glory Beckons The Olympic Games are amazing in so many ways and the 2008 edition in Beijing will obviously be historic but from a boxing standpoint, it is another excellent opportunity for fans around the world to witness the best boxers in action on a clean and level playing field. It is an honour to be President of the International Boxing Association at a time where it is reaching heights never seen before and as my first Olympic Games as AIBA President it makes me proud to know that our new Olympic champions will be crowned following a tough yet fair and honest journey to gold. Over the past 21 months AIBA has worked intensively to give the athletes the platform to perform to the best of their ability and to reward skill and excellence. All the athletes who have trained so hard and got this far, deserve it. I am looking forward to seeing the benefits of this and the numerous success stories in the ring during what will be a fantastic event. May the best man win but above all, may all boxers enjoy the experience, keeping in mind the key values of any good athlete – respect, honesty and fair play. Yours boxing, Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu, AIBA President

AIBA Tournaments 2nd AIBA American Olympic Qualifying Tournament Guatemala City, Guatemala - Cuba top qualifiers but Pereza misses out The Olympic qualifying process for the Americas came to a dramatic close in April with Cuba failing to register a full complement of boxers for the first time since 1972 – not considering when Cuba did not participate in the 1984 and 1988 Olympics. Julio la Cruz Pereza, in the 81kg class, was the only Cuban boxer not to make it to Beijing after losing to

Eleyder Alvarez (COL) by jury vote in his first bout of the 2nd Olympic Qualifier in Guatemala. He had earlier lost to Christopher Downs (USA) in the second round of the 1st Olympic qualifier in Trinidad and Tobago. Cuba still finished the American qualifying process with the most representatives with 10 boxers after Yampier Gonzalez Hernandez finished

third in the 48kg class, followed by USA, which saw its ninth boxer in Shawn Estrada (75kg) book a spot on the Beijing plane in Guatemala. A total of 16 different countries are represented in the final list of the Americas qualifiers, with Brazil, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela all qualifying six apiece.

A total of 133 boxers from 26 countries participated in the 2nd AIBA American Olympic Qualifying Tournament

AIBA Oceania Olympic Qualifying Tournament Apia, Samoa - Australia top Oceania event with nine qualifiers April’s Oceania Continental Championships in Apia, Samoa, which doubled as the regions Olympic qualifier, turned out to be an Australian bonanza.

Highlights on the final day saw Papua New Guinea’s Jack Willie become a three-time Oceania champion with victory over Kyle Freiberg (AUS) in the 48kg division while Australia’s Luke Boyd repeated his 2007 success with victory over Eugene Keto (PNG) in the 54kg class.

Australia, Papua New Guinea and Samoa split the 11 Olympic qualification vacancies on offer at the Oceania Olympic qualifying tournament with Australia topping the list with nine qualifiers.

In a repeat of the 75kg 2007 Oceania Continental Championship final Australia’s Jarrod Fletcher was again too good for Nathan McEwan of New Zealand while Australia’s Bradley Pitt retained his 91kg Oceania title by beating compatriot Adam Forsyth - a 2004 Olympian.

Samoa and Papua New Guinea each qualified one boxer apiece. The Apia tournament was the only qualifier for the Oceania region and represented the ninth out of 10 for the entire AIBA Olympic boxing qualifying process.

Dr. Wu acknowledges success of 1st AIBA President Cup It was a gracious AIBA President, visibly touched by the occasion, who acknowledged the success of the 1st AIBA President Cup on the final day of competition in Sinjhuang City, Taiwan in May. Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu, from Taiwan, spent the entire week at the tournament which was created in order to pay homage to the AIBA President who, since his election in November 2006, has been successfully reforming the sport of boxing across all levels. Following the week-long tournament, where a number of boxers were on their last hit-out prior to the Olympic Games, an impressive 26 out of the 36-participating countries claimed a medal with Uzbekistan topping the medal tally with four gold and two bronze.

18 months to make boxing what it is now; a transparent, dynamic and respectable sport. After making many changes to the AIBA and to the structure of our international boxing competitions we are now at a stage where we can be proud to be apart of a strong and united family with a very exciting future. With continued success inside and outside of the ring, a bright and fulfilling number of years lie ahead of us.”

AIBA Referee and Judges Workshop The 1st AIBA President Cup International Tournament also brought to a close a very successful AIBA Referee and Judges Olympic Games workshop where the AIBA referees and judges selected to officiate during the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing participated in a twoday theory course from May 21-22 in Beijing before attending the 1st AIBA President Cup in which they all officiated.

Final Day Results by Weight Category

AIBA President Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu (middle-left) was grateful to the host federation and to the athletes who participated in the event.

‘‘This week has been a very special one for me,’’ Dr. Wu told the audience at the Hsinchuang Stadium Taipei County. “I am very passionate about sport and boxing in particular and because of this I am grateful to the Chinese Taipei Boxing Association for their kind hospitality and excellent organisation of the tournament and also to all of the countries and athletes who participated in this memorable event.” “The spirit on display throughout the competition is exactly what has driven AIBA in the past

All boxers must possess an International Competition Record Book in which the boxer is certified fit to box by a qualified Doctor of Medicine. All boxers are physically examined and weighed on the eve of the competition and on the morning of each day when the boxer will be competing. The Olympic competition features bouts of four rounds of two minutes

Beijing Olympic Games Key Rules Valid Scoring Points Boxers must land a blow on his opponent with sufficient force on the body, without being blocked or guarded, directly with the knuckle part of the closed glove of either hand on any part of the front or side of the head or body above the belt.

Cautions, Warnings and Disqualification Three cautions for the same type of foul bring an automatic warning. Three warnings bring automatic disqualification.

Olympic Games Boxing by numbers:

Key Results Win on Points Win by Retirement Win by Referee Stopping Contest • RSCOS Referee Stops Contest Out Scored (20-point margin, not applicable in final round) • RSCI Referee Stops Contest Injury • RSCH Referee Stops Contest Head (if a boxer is unfit to continue after receiving several hard blows to the head) Win by Disqualification Win by Knock-Out No Contest Win by Walk-Over

Boxer Down When a boxer is “down” but ready to continue the bout the Referee counts from one to eight. If the boxer is continuously down the count is from one to ten. A boxer is “down” when: •

He or she touches the floor with any part of the body other than his or her feet as the result of a blow or series of blows. He or she hangs helplessly on the ropes as the result of a blow or series of blows. He or she is outside or partly outside the ropes as the result of a blow or series of blows. If following a hard punch he or she has not fallen and is not lying on the ropes, but is in a semi-conscious state and cannot, in the opinion of the Referee, continue the bout.
