Urban studies of Verona, Italy in my third year fourth studio to develop the area of the old roman theater. Given the objective of designing an ecological academy I developed a multi-use proscenium to give Verona a permanent stage around the thematic idea of Earth and Water. Connecting to the site ruins of the old theater the upper floors are pulled off of the old walls creating gallery spaces and making the ruins a permanent exhibit. Between the work and public spaces is a large multifunctional space designed to open for stage shows and close for indoor exhibits. Glazing protected by a brise soleil opens the space along the street facade connecting visually from the theater to the river. The purpose of choosing this site was to connect the urban wall along the river and connect this space back to the roman castrum of the inner city. This is done by taking the roman grid, dividing it into smaller units and laying it across the streets and public paths as an extension of the old grid.
