EDITHVALE SEAFORD WETLAND DISCOVERY CENTRE Edithvale Road, Edithvale VIC
Design Brief The project is to design a discovery centre for Edithvale Seaford Wetland. The subject is aim to teach students how to use various methods to the architecture to achieve sustainable outcome. The time for this project is 5 weeks.
Site Analysis The site is located just off the Edithvale Road, in Edithvale. There is no water and energy supplying to the site. The nearest train station is Seaford station is about 1.5km southwest of the wetland. The Edithvale road goes through the wetland and is a only access for the wetland and the site. The site will be flood during specific season.

M
The initial idea for the discovery center is using the shape of the fling birds. Then I simplified the shapes of the bird’s wing into two black lines open up in slop. And then I bring in a smaller symbol of the birds to give the layout more hierarchy. Also turn the two birds in a certain angle to make the layout more interesting.

The site will be flood in some season, so the building must be lifting up to the ground to avoid the flood. Therefore the building must have a ramp/stair to enter the building. The visiting of this discover centre will follow a linear route. For this reason everything has to follow the route of visiting.

The discovery centre is mainly open for school visiting, to take care of disable students the building must have special facility for disable, such as Ramp, Lift, Flat floor, Disable Toilet. Also the discovery centre needs some more facility for water recycle and electricity. As an institution which runs all around the year, the centre might need more facility such as office to keep employee to stay.

Double Glazing
Sustainable Feature For keep the nature environment as original and minimise the influence of the building to the wetland. The architecture needs several methods and technic to maintain the landscape. Firstly on the south facade I designed a glass curtain wall. Witch can ensure the lights can go into the building to save energy, in addition all the windows panel higher than the second raw is possible to open which can use the nature wind to cool down the place. To avoid summer sun heat I design the floor plate for second level is a bit smaller than the first level which makes the second level as shading for the first level also there is a wall built on second level’s south side to block the sunlight. The site had no electricity connection, which means the building have to have its own power supply. The solar power is the most suitable option for this project, because the equipment is small that the service facility will not affect the view of the landscape. The south side of the building have nothing to block the sunlight. The flat roof makes the solar panel very easy to install. as the electricity the site also had no water supply, which means the building will depends on truck to deliver fresh water. Besides fresh water, the grey water will also be used on the site. That’s the reason for four large water tanks to be installed on the east side of the building. Those are the main sustainable feature for this design. Other than that this building will have some other way to keep the building more efficiency and more sustainable such as all the glass is double glazing, all the timber is recycle timber etc.

Automat Hotel 80 Collins Street, Melbourne VIC
The subject is aim to learn how to complete a set of professional construction drawing for an Automat Hotel which is proposed to supply a low cost living and working environment for people to have a short term stay in the heart of Melbourne. The site is located on the most expensive block in the Melbourne CBD, the building surround the site had very strong historical atmosphere. Also the architecture on the north is higher than the proposed height of this project.

St.Kilda Childcare Centre 165 Carlisle Street St.Kilda VIC
Design Initiative This is a university project that I was done in my third year interior design course which called Interior Design Studio – Inhabitation (HDINT321). The project is to design a childcare centre in St. Kilda region. The duration for this project is about 5 weeks. Through the process of doing this project I start to understand the relationship of human inhabitant and the ordinary urban space. The complex of the site will have huge influence to the architecture in this project. Also as the building will be run as a childcare centre which make the design have more to concern. There is several tram come through the front of the site, on Carlisle Street have route 3/3a, 16, 79; on Chapel Street have route 78 and 79.the St. Kilda Public Library is across the road, and St. Kilda Town Hall is next door. In the other side is a homeless shelter. On the back of the site is St. Kilda Primary School. The Balaclava Train Station is about 200m on Carlisle Street. 2 3 The pedestrian flow around the site is huge and peoples have very wide range of social status. The undefined pedestrians will cause potential complication of 1 4 the environment.

The kids’ activity area is the most important area for a childcare centre. Therefore I put the kids’ activity area facing south so I can maximise the effect from sun light. Secondly the facility and service area is the heart of an institution but the machinery will produce noise and dusts, so it should be away from the kids’ activity area. The office is a place that has convenient access to any part of the building, where I allocated it in the middle of the institute. The storage room has the same need therefore the storage is placed opposite of office. Also as an educational institute they must have a place that allows the parents and the public to get enquiry and meeting. The public access area is a loading zone in between the kids and the society, which have to locate next to the entrance. Finally the entrance, for security reason the entrance better to make people cannot look through the institute which makes me located the entrance on the west side where have not direct contact to the street yet have access for vehicle and pedestrian to get access.

Concept Design
This idea is based on bridge. The childcare centre will have many kids in a building. The bridge can have more routs to let kids get access which avoid the crowdedness.
This is using the slop to create a hill shape building. The change of the ceiling in the interior will make the space more fun, also huge roof space can create a large space which to give kids enough room to play.
This concept is inspired by Lego. the structure will ensure every room in the building have enough sunlight and the shape will create shadow during different time in a day.
Design Development
From the previous concept I make the shape of the building more dynamic. Make the side wall straight to maximise the usage of the space. According to the summer heat in Australia, the shading must be provided to the building to avoid the high temperature and saving energy. For interior I plan that two children’s home room share one of the toilet which can reduce the size of the whole building.

Men-Tei Ramen
Take Away Sushi Menu
257 Glenferrie Rd, Malvern VIC Men-Tei Ramen is a little Japanese restaurant situate in the corner of Glenferrie Rd, Malvern. I was appointed to design the visual identities for this newly opened restaurant. I used the element of traditional Japanese brush calligraphy as typography to identified the Japanese culture. Also I used a red stamp same as the ancient Japanese calligraphy artists to put on their art work. Instead of the artist’s name that used to be on the stamp, I changed to a little pavilion which is reflect to the restaurant’s name Men-Tei (noodle pavilion).

Magic Hands massage clinic
The Magic Hands Massage Clinic is a massage clinic mainly provides remedial massage and relaxation massage. The shop is situate in side of a shopping centre, which side by side with many other shops, to make the client’s shop stand out I choose orange to make pedestrian’s focus. As the name Magic Hands normally designer will use hands as an element, but body parts might make some people feel nervous. Therefore I use hand print as element. The typography I chose is Arial which is a very traditional and clean typeface. Use all lowercase on massage clinic and uppercase on M and H in Magic Hands to give a hierarchy to the logo.

Masspro Massage is a health clinic to provide remedial massage, relaxation massage, and traditional herbal medicine. I used several hierarchy of green to provide an atmosphere of relaxation. The flower or leaf symbol can be interpreted as traditional herbal medicine. The colour from yellow to green indicate the patient will be better and better trough the treatment from the clinic. Lowercase character gives people feeling humble and affordable. San Serif typography provides a clean and professional image. Unfortunately due to some unpredictable reason the business is not open for practice.
