Gray’s School of Art

AT ROBERT GORDON UNIVERSITY

“Why I love Gray’s? My learning experience has been incredibly broad. I have a depth of understanding in my own discipline but because of the teaching methods, I have been able to explore different ways of working and thinking about creative practice throughout my 4 years. The learning community is open, collaborative and encouraging of crossdisciplinary activities. Staff are great at challenging you and supporting you, encouraging reflection and questioning. I feel confident in myself, in my own work, and I know how to build upon that once I leave Gray’s.”

We believe that artists and designers change the future, so we educate you to think flexibly, critically, and expansively to take on new ideas and challenges. Our collaborative learning environment is empowering the next generation of enterprising creative graduates. Critically and socially engaged, you will explore how to work with others to become a future-focused creative professional. Our teaching is student-centred; you will learn through doing, thinking, challenging ideas and asking questions, not by routine. We offer a nurturing and dynamic learning environment where you will have your own dedicated studio space, ensuring you reach the very best of your potential. We understand the importance of digital and emerging technologies in equipping you for future working environments, and we respect the need to learn the traditional skills that underpin creative disciplines. These facilities also provide access to the best of traditional processes as well as digital manufacturing tools such as laser cutters, 3D scanners and fabric printers. You will be able to experience other creative learning environments and cultures through international field visits and study exchanges with our partner colleges. Most of our courses also offer a placement opportunity across the Scottish Highlands and major cities in the UK. We have long established relationships with industrial partners, creative agencies, and public bodies who invest their time and support in the delivery of live project work, funded awards, and sponsorships in partnership with the School. Our Guests@Gray’s programme involves a series of lectures and seminars delivered by national and international artists and designers, writers and curators.

Look Again, part of Gray’s School of Art, leads on the development of the creative industries in Aberdeen, creating conditions to support and retain world-class creative talent in the North East of Scotland. It delivers talks, workshops and networking events that you can benefit from.

Staging and exhibitions, across the University’s campus and at external venues, are key activities in developing your professional, traditional, digital and presentation skills. In your final year, you will have the opportunity to showcase your work at our annual Degree Show which is held on campus every summer. Industry professionals and members of the public from the local, national and sometimes international communities will view, critique and buy your work. The event is the highlight of the curriculum for all year levels and is a fantastic social occasion.
