ADVOCATE CHRIST MEDICAL CENTER
THE NEW PATIENT CARE CENTER
I
n Evidence Based on Design, E.B.D, there are many ways to design a medical center for not only patients, but also staff, such as making a home-like environment, ease of way finding, getting even natural light into the building, and biophilic design. In my design, in order to accomplish E.B.D, the main concept of the new patient building focuses on communication with users, communication with its neighborhood, and communication with nature. This “healing way”, uses the outdoor greenery spaces that are surrounding the building to attract natural light into several small atriums of the building, and articulates a dynamic building shape. The atriums become a “sign” to help people easily find their way. Each floor is connected to green spaces either horizontally or vertically within tow or three story high gardens. This means that each patient room can have equally good view and intimacy with the nature, even though they do not have the same orientation. Also, the bridge between the parking garage and the new patient building becomes a promenade for patients, staff, and the neighborhood. In addition, the Advocate Christ Medical Campus surrounding the parking lots would use as a place for wildlife through the biophilic design. The healing way starts from new park in front of the parking garage, and would be continuous along the west side of the parking garage and its roof garden, and finally connects with the winter garden. Lastly, the “healing way” including the arcade and several atriums would be the center of the whole Advocate Christ Medical Campus.

he site context is surrounded by huge parking lots. Also, there are few vegetations around the site. Thus, it is difficult to get nice views from the patient tower. Also, making a public space that closely connects with nature is very difficult. There are two strategies to solve the current site problems. First, heavy vegetation would be put on the parking garage. Second, we propose a vegetation path, a healing way that surrounds a patient tower. The path will provide good space quality by the connection with nature.

The marble-covered elevator core and an artificial waterfall gives lively spacial quality. Furthermore, a mimicry tree covers the column structure so letting the users to perceive nature-like atmosphere.

arger sized window allows more daylight into the room thus it reduces the depression of patients. Vertical vegetation on a parking garage provides perception of nature. The healing way adds connection to nature for the patients. These factors will reduce pain and stress. Cozy furnitures provide better quality of sleep by relieving spacial quaility. Also, darker floor color diminish hospital acquired infections.

his section study drawing articulates the concept of a sunken garden and daylight system. The sunken garden composed with step benches and oak trees provides a large exterior green park for the users. The sunken garden connects the existing buildings to the new buildings.
A pond in the sunken garden that combined with dining space acts as a light reflector which brightens the underground dining space. The 9 story high atrium on the north of the building adds more light into the building.

he experience of... the disassociation of a unitary space by means of screens and diaphragms. ...by starting... from a constructive volume of irregular geometric profile, disassociating space from it, preventing the integral and direct reading of it... by inserting in it free walls and diaphragms which thus come to support unforeseeable and uncertain boundary, spatial sectors. peaceful journey like stopping for a casual conversation, As if on the way to a place with beautiful flowers appearing to shine next to a tree,
With the scent of fresh bread flowing through the air inducing a feeling of satiation. Like the church over the bridge across the river. It can always be looked at, seeming to be waiting for my peace. An afternoon with leaves falling, A father who is pushing his daughter on a swing. A place able to turn coldness to warmth. Here is it for your all. One place that frees you of all the weight and pain of life; that place is here. ...

... A place within earshot of your voice. A piece of joy in calmness, to hear the boisterous sounds from children in a playground. Perhaps young in age, a place reminiscent of an older time, resurfacing memories of the past. Within this place, a presence standing over you, protecting you in the journey. A sense of nature approaching, within it, the way for me to go becomes clear. Leaving what feels dear to me for my voyage heading onward. To a place where my Lord always resides. A place where you leave your thoughts behind. The way of going to there is through a clarity of the place as itself. Spread open your thoughts. Unleash your dreams.

As a self-employment project, a very limited construction cost was provided. In order to deal with many issues and problems with given budget, utilization of existing elements was a key strategy for this project. Through the renovation, stronger interaction between the workers and customers was generated. As the chef being displayed, an enjoyable theatre-like atmosphere arised in the restautant.
