. . . the POWER of Education (A message from the superintendent of schools)

Kevin Harness Superintendent

Educational Opportunities Continue . . . Happy summer everyone! At this time of year with the previous school year barely behind us and summer just nicely getting started, (at least that is how it seems even though the Fourth of July is just around the corner) it is traditional to reflect and discuss the highlights of the past year. Instead, however, I have chosen to share some of the exciting opportunities for our students this coming fall for the 2011-12 school year. As I believe most everyone is already aware, Allegan Public Schools will be starting all-day kindergarten for our students this fall. A full day kindergarten program will be provided for all students at all four elementary buildings. Each classroom will be staffed with a highly qualified teacher for the entire day. In addition, a highly qualified instructional assistant will aide in student learning for approximately two thirds of the instructional day. This investment in our kindergarten students is beneficial not only for our students’ academic progress, but also for our families that have difficulty obtaining affordable day care or providing noon time transportation that our previous half-day program required. Also at the elementary level next fall we are continuing to offer programs for students in the areas of physical education, art, music, technology/computers, and foreign language. For the past three years we have added an after school music experience to supplement the school day program. A choir made up of motivated students from all four elementary buildings practices after school for several weeks, similar to our elementary athletic programs. In the spring, the group performs at the elementary programs and often at the high school or middle school spring concerts. The most recent addition to the elementary “specials list” is foreign language which was added for 2nd - 5th grades in 2009. Educators nearly unanimously agree that beginning foreign language instruction at an early age not only results in improved and longer lasting skills in the foreign language, but also provides positive benefits in other curricular areas. At the middle level foreign language instruction will continue to be provided for all 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. “Hands on” learning opportunities continue at the middle school with instruction in technology education as well as life management. A middle school Honor’s Choir was a welcome addition last year for students who love to sing! Students who may be struggling academically can receive help at the Learning Center which provides supplemental instruction as well as one-on-one tutoring both during and after school. Middle school students who are motivated and who qualify can accelerate their learning by moving to higher level classes than are typical for their grade level. The middle school and high school buildings being across the street from one another certainly facilitates this opportunity. High school students that are up for the challenge can enroll in Advanced Placement courses in English, mathematics, science, and history. Few high schools of our size offer as many A.P. courses. Despite the increase in the academic high school graduation requirements more students than ever are taking advantage of the vocational opportunities at the Allegan County Area Technical and Education Center. Once again our high school’s proximity to Tech Center and the flexibility in scheduling at both facilities will continue to make the educational opportunities at the ACATEC a viable option this fall. Students at the high school who need some extra help in meeting the rigorous high school graduation requirements can find help from one of our academic coaches who have been hired to assist students in virtually all academic courses. For students who struggle in the traditional high school environment, Allegan Alternative High School will continue to provide a supportive and creative educational option for students throughout the county. Wanting to avoid throwing a wet blanket on the many opportunities for our students this fall I hesitated to even mention the financial challenges facing school districts across the state. While we have been able to maintain, and in a few instances even increase, offerings for our students here in Allegan for next year, unless the state funding for education changes dramatically in subsequent years, many of these and other greatly needed programs for kids will disappear. However, despite my continuing acute budget concerns, and while the 2010-11 school year is barely over, I am already looking forward with excitement to the opportunities our students will have to learn and grow in 2011-12. The staff at Allegan Public Schools will continue to provide the instruction and support necessary for our students to be successful in meeting their educational challenges kindergarten through 12th grade and beyond. Looking forward to next year’s opportunities!

History Projects

2nd graders in Mrs. Bartz’ class at North Ward Elementary made projects in their social studies class that were about the history of America long ago. The projects included long houses, teepees, villages, forts, wagons, log cabins, gardens, and reports on George Washington, Paul Revere, and the 13 Colonies. A great deal of thought and creativity went into each project and students thoroughly enjoyed working on them, as well as learning about history while looking at other students’ projects. 2nd grader Justin Williams displays his Indian village.

A celebration for Dr. Seuss’ birthday was one of the highlights, with his famous Cat in the Hat characters Thing 1 and Thing 2 showing up in Mrs. Corbett’s kindergarten room! The high school choir also visited and shared the story “Jazz Fly” -- in which the students put their singing and musical skills into the highly entertaining story. A big thanks to Mrs. Balkon and the choir! Mrs. Corbett (Thing 1) and kindergartner Joey Kavanagh (Thing 2).

Career Day

What do you want to be when you grow up? Students at West Ward Elementary spent the day hearing about over 16 different kinds of jobs (everything from a firefighter to a farmer)!

Blood Drive Saves Lives

Martin Lowenberg answers questions from students Casey Taylor, Tom Hyde, and Don Kridler.

Holocaust Survivor Tells Story

The students of Allegan Alternative High School received a powerful lesson on the true cost of hate when Holocaust survivor and international speaker Martin Lowenberg spoke to the school on Tuesday, May 17. Lowenberg, 83, is a German-born Jew who now resides in Southfield, Michigan. Lowenberg and his sister Eva were forced into the Kaiserwald concentration camp and ultimately survived while his parents and twin brothers were sent to the Auschwitz death camp in Poland. “I will never know what happened to them,” Lowenberg told the students, “I can only pray that they did not suffer too badly.” Many of the students have been learning about the Holocaust including Laura Feffer’s English class who just completed reading Elie Wiesel’s memoir Night. “I called synagogues, history professors, and museums trying to get a lead on a survivor in our area,” Feffer explained. “I knew that nothing I could teach my students in a classroom would have the same impact as hearing it straight from a person who lived through it.” Senior Kyle Dressler described the event as, “a once in a lifetime experience.” Senior Brandon Kloth commented, “I learned how hate can devour you, and love can heal.”

Students from the Allegan Alternative High School held a blood drive on June 2, under the supervision of teacher Mark Horn. According to Principal Brenda Nyhof, this was the first time they attempted to organize a blood drive and it was very successful. “Next year we will change a few things to make it even better, but this was a great opportunity for our students to serve the community,” she stated. The American Red Cross Blood Drive Coordinating Nurse reported that enough blood was donated to save 60 people in need!

AEA Provides Scholarships

The Allegan Educational Association (teachers union) awarded over $9,000 in scholarships this spring to Allegan students. High School students each receiving $1,000 for college were: Shelby Pattok, Joe Granger, Lindsey Pegg, Michael Wallace, CeCe Rivera, and Garret Tyrrell. Twenty-three elementary students also received scholarships of between $80-$160 to fund summer camps and other learning opportunities, including: “Summer Buddies”, “Lakers Writing Camp”, and “Mark Kistler’s Imagination Station”.

Teachers Receive Mini-Grants

The Educational Foundation of Allegan Public Schools recently awarded teacher mini-grants totalling $12,000. Approximately $5,000 was awarded to teachers for science and math related grants, funded by the Perrigo Foundation. Items such as 5th grade camp “tuition”, anatomy models, and graphing calculators will be purchased. Mini-grants totalling nearly $7,000 were awarded to teachers to fund general items such as kinesthetic ball chairs, genre unit books, and technology items such as projectors, document cameras, and clickers. The majority of these mini-grants are made possible through the Ed. Foundation fundraiser -- the Cash Party. Page 10

Students in Ms. Dykstra’s Parenthood class had the opportunity to work with their “subjects” this spring, as they brought in “guests” aged 0-5 to visit their class. Students were able to interact with children of all ages while they obvserved their behaviors and play.

A “Capitol” Experience

Two Allegan High School students, Travis Hunziker and Casey Dunn, both had the opportunity to write bills which they took to Lansing and presented in the actual Legislative Chambers, as part of the Michigan Youth in Government conference. Casey wrote a bill that would make the procedure for obtaining a marriage license more in-depth; and Travis’ bill would ensure that all passengers in a vehicle would be required to wear a seatbelt whether in the front seat or back. Their teacher, Nichole Dykstra, said this is a unique experience for students and she hopes to increase the size of the Allegan delegation next year!

Spanish and French Cuisine (yum!)

Donna Liebelt and Juan Gonzalez show off their “Top Chef” skills!

Film Contest Award Two AHS students, Benjamin Brooks and Damien Arthur, were one of 60 finalists in the “Meijer Great Choices Film Festival”. Their film submission was a Public Service Announcement entitled “Healthy Choices” and depicted a boy faced with the delimma of whether or not to smoke. Their teacher, Kim Sparks, said this was the first time in 3 years that an Allegan student has placed in this contest!

Spanish and French students from AHS got to experience authentic cuisine, while learning some cooking techniques of their own. The Spanish Club traveled to Chicago and visited the Chopping Block Culinary School where they learned how to clean, peel and dice chayote squash, cilantro, poblano peppers, avocados and tomatillos. Then they got to enjoy eating their masterpieces--chicken enchiladas verdes, Mexican rice, and ensalada loca. French students enjoyed a delicious cooking demonstration by Chef Richard Centala, who treated the class to garlic grilled chicken, cheese puffs, pear tarts, and LOTS of French bread!

Spring Break in Puerto Rico!

High School teachers Mr. Westgate and Ms. Ojeda-Greig accompanied a group of 24 students and parents on a Spanish immersion adventure in Puerto Rico over spring break. Highlights of the trip included exploring Taino Indian ruins, professional salsa lessons, banana boating, hiking, swimming, and zip-lining, as well as a visit to an Old San Juan Spanish fortress (pictured above). Allegan Offers Full-Day Kindergarten Beginning with the 2011-12 school year, Allegan Public Schools has exciting new changes to our full-day kindergarten program in the fall. The district has decided to staff the kindergarten with certified teachers all day. In addition to the regular kindergarten curriculum, students will experience “specials” that may include art, music, and physical education. “In spite of budget challenges facing our district this year,” stated Superintendent Kevin Harness, “we are confident that this program will make a huge impact on our youngest learners!” If you have a pre-school student who will be 5 years old before December 1, 2011, be sure to register him or her at your neighborhood elementary school.

Girls on the Run

Ashlynn Anderson, Sidney Modad, Hanna Curtiss, and Alison Bishop celebrate their 5K race finish!

Sixty-five girls from Allegan elementary schools participated in this year’s “Girls on the Run” program. The 10-week program culminated in a 5K run in Holland on May 20. Girls are “coached” by volunteers who not only help them develop running and endurance skills, but also work on social and self-esteem issues. A huge thanks to the coordinators from each school: Penny Bishop (Pine Trails), Shelley Baker (West Ward), and Cindy Tibbitts (Dawson)

Students cheer as Annabel Bishop completes her 100th mile on May 31!

Run, Annabel, Run!

North Ward Elementary 2nd grader, Annabel Bishop, completed 100 miles this year in the school’s “Mileage Club” program. Designed to increase interest in fitness, all students together accumulated over 1,500 total miles during recess time!
