Welcome New Board Members:

Allegan Public Schools welcomes two new board members to the Board of Education, effective January 1, 2017. Elected at the November 8 election were KD Lake and Jennifer Nicholson. Also re-elected for another 6 year term was Troy Carns.

Katherine D. Lake is a lifelong resident of Allegan. She

is owner of Hartman-Ellis Insurance and has been actively involved in Allegan school activities including Sports Boosters and the Educational Foundation of APS. KD and her husband John have 4 children who attended or are attending APS (Taylor, Olivia, Peyton, and Cooper). She was elected to fill the remaining 2 years of Mark Davidhizar’s term.

Jennifer Nicholson was elected to a 6-year term on the school board. She and her husband, Jack moved to Allegan in 2006 and they have two sons attending AHS (Austin and Brandon). Jennifer runs a business out of her home, and has been heavily involved with supporting our schools including being a member of the Dawson PTO and the Allegan Band Boosters.

Troy Carns, who was re-elected to a 6 year term, originally joined the board in 2011. He graduated from Allegan High School in 1989 and is an avid supporter of school sports and other activities. Troy is a self employed farmer and heavy equipment operator and is currently serving as Board Treasurer.

Mark Davidhizar resigns

Board member Mark Davidhizar has resigned his position on the Board of Education as of December 31, 2016. Mark served 12 years on the school board, serving as board president, vice president, and secretary and on numerous committees, including Building & Grounds, Personnel, and School Improvement. The school administration and the district will miss Mr. Davidhizar’s calm demeanor and always insightful and students-first approach to school matters. Thank you for your service to Allegan Public Schools!!!

APS Elementary Building Configuration – Time for a Change?

The Allegan Public Schools Board of Education, administration, elementary staff and parents have been engaged in discussions regarding our elementary building configuration and the potential benefits of a change in how our four elementary buildings are presently utilized. Currently we operate four K-5 buildings, with pre-school and pre-K programming being offered at two of our buildings. APS, as well as hundreds of districts across Michigan and thousands across the nation, have experienced a loss of enrollment over the past two decades. The baby boom “echo” population is no longer in the 5-18 year old age group attending our K-12 schools. Many school buildings across the nation have been closed due to a loss of enrollment. I am happy to say that closing a building is NOT an option being discussed here at APS. However, changing the grade level configuration at our four elementary buildings, and providing an opportunity for the growth of early childhood / pre-school opportunities through APS as well as other educational partners in the community is being talked about. There is NOT a budget shortfall or imminent financial need that has precipitated our discussions; however, our ability to maintain programs for our students over time would be strengthened by taking advantage of efficiencies that would occur through an elementary building reconfiguration. Three possible options being discussed are listed below. All options have pros and cons. The final decision may be a variation of one of the options listed. The Board of Education and administrative team is taking its time and gathering as much input as possible in order to make an informed decision that best serves our students.

Some items to remember as we move forward in these discussions: •

No decisions have been made at this point in time; nor has an implementation timeline been established, should a change occur.

• Input is being gathered from staff, parents, administration, and the Board of Education. All input will be considered in an administrative recommendation that is offered to the Board for their consideration. So far, the following has occurred (or is planned) to facilitate this information gathering:

-- Staff input (October 12 Professional Development time for teachers)

-- Parent Input (November 9 at Dawson, November 17 at West Ward, November 22 at Pine Trails,

December 6 at North Ward)

-- Board of Ed (September 26, November 14) • All buildings will remain open. Room for growth of our student population will be maintained.

• Enrollment projections for the future will be considered.

• Any change in building configuration would not result in a reduction in teaching/instructional staff. Class size would not be negatively affected. Administrative and support staff reductions may occur, which would be accomplished through attrition as much as possible.

OPTION #1 - Maintain present building and student distribution of (4) K-5 buildings OPTION #2 - (3) Neighborhood K-5 Buildings plus (1) Early Childhood Center

5th grade camp

(an adventure to remember!)

Allegan 5th graders escaped to the great outdoors during November for their annual camping adventure at the Outdoor Education Center in Dowling, MI. Students from Dawson, Pine Trails, North Ward, and West Ward built wooden shelters, dipped candles, canoed, danced, conducted a pond study, built a motorized vehicle that moved through the water, learned about predator/prey relatioships, and even held an 8-foot boa constrictor named Salvador! It was a great time team building, learning, and fun (and tired teachers)!!! The 5th graders would like to thank the PTO’s from each of our elementaries as well as the Educational Foundation of APS, for providing much of the cost of this trip. It is truly a lifelong memory for our students!

Wings Home “rake up”

Students from the Allegan Alternative High School raised their rakes to help the Wings Home clean up their yard. Wings Home is a four-bedroom residence that terminally ill patients from Wings of Hope Hospice use during their time of need. Classes from Alternative High School rotate in every other week to help neighbors in a community service project.

Thankful for our Veterans . . .

Dawson Elementary held its annual Veteran’s Day celebration where local veterans were invited in for coffee and donuts. The students honored them by presenting them with cards they had made and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance together.

Thanksgiving food drive

Student Leaders at Allegan High School held a food drive initiative this year and donated over 2500 non-perishable food items to the local Allegan Food Pantry. According to Student Leader adviser/ teacher Josh Lucas, the students wanted to help out local families that may be struggling over the holidays and they stressed the importance of giving back to the community.

Bus Drivers’ Treat!

The APS Transportation Department put on their first Trick-or-Treat event at the bus garage this year and it was a huge success with over 500 kids attending! The bus drivers would like to thank Dr. Lou Giovannucci and the many parents/citizens of the community who donated candy. They are hoping to make this an annual event and are already in the planning stages for next year’s event!

In honor of Veteran’s Day, students in 3rd grade at North Ward Elementary were challenged to create an American flag that they could raise and lower.

They were given supplies of 1 straw, 1 piece of thread, paper of red, white, and blue, and access to glue, tape and twisty ties. Their creativity was outstanding and their flags were upstanding!

Tis the Season for Benchmark Testing!

By: Cheryl-Marie Manson, Director of Instruction This school year marks the fourth year of implementation of our response to intervention (RtI) model. Benchmark assessments are an integral part of RtI. These assessments are administered at the beginning of the year, middle of the year and end of the year. Our benchmark assessments include DIBELs, Running Records, and DELTA Math for grades kindergarten through fifth. In the middle school, students took the NWEA for the first time. Our alternative high school also began using NWEA this year.

Benchmark assessments, along with grade level common formative assessments, highlight for teachers and intervention teams which students need interventions and who could benefit from enrichment.

Last year our benchmark assessments showed a dramatic increase in student skills throughout the school year. Likewise, our spring state assessments showed equally dramatic results. In the elementary grades, our students grew at the highest percentage rate of any district in our county.

Attached (right) are charts showing comparisons of last year's beginning of the year assessment and this years. As you can see, our students are already outperforming their peers from the year before. This shows that students are coming into each grade level this year with a higher level of skills than they have in the past.

Obviously, these results are exciting for our district. Through time, these skills will improve year to year. Eventually, we will see a dramatic increase in our graduation rates, average SAT scores, and the number of students accepted into post-secondary opportunities. Our next benchmark assessments are in January 2017. We look forward to seeing more academic gains!

Professional Development

Obviously, teacher training and professional development opportunities are very important to the success of our RtI program. To that end, APS teachers have been receiving training at the elementary and secondary level, as well as meeting with their specific grade levels or departments to fine-tune our curriculum to best meet the needs of our students. Apple Crunch Day!

Thursday, October 13 was “Apple Crunch Day” in Michigan and all Allegan Public Schools’ students and staff were treated to an apple, provided by the following local orchards: Square Nail Farm, and Brookside Farms, and Crane’s Orchard. Allegan’s Food Service Director Barb Elenbaas, along with Project LEAN Coordinator Mindy Sturman, helped coordinate the distribution of apples. Apple Crunch is in its 4th year in Michigan, and is a program designed to connect communities, families and schools with local growers!

Allegan Band “Notes” Marching Band Competition

-- The Tiger Marching Band finished their season earning 6th place at the MCBA Championship Competition in Detroit with a score of 88.40!

The Tiger Marching Band was placed into a higher division this year, facing bands more than twice as big as them, yet were able show that dedication and hard work are key to success. Congrats to our Tiger Marching Band, you made us very proud!!!

Doris Hankins was the first GED graduate of the school year! At age 68, we are especially proud of Doris’ journey, which began two years ago! Doris had completed school through the 8th grade and in her 60’s decided to go back to school to earn her GED! She spent countless hours studying. Doris’ smile and never-give-up attitude was an encouragement to others enrolled in the program. Now that Doris has completed her high school education, she is planning to follow her dream of becoming an ordained minister. We wish Doris all the best in her future endeavors!

Fundraiser + Donations = $6,000

The Alternative High School’s first community wide fundraiser was a huge success! The movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory was shown at the Regent Theater and 134 Wonka Bars were purchased for a chance to win Golden Ticket prizes. Thanks to the outpouring of community support, a donation from Perrigo Foundation, and matching funds from KD Lake with Modern Woodmen, over $6000 was raised to support the school’s Mind, Body, and Spirit program.

Middle School Student Council Student Council would like to thank the community for the support they gave with the 2016-17 L.E. White Middle School Student Council Fundraiser this fall. The fundraiser this year raised over $5,000 and will go towards helping support student sponsored activities, assemblies, and purchasing items to help improve the school. Some things that have been purchased in the past are drinking fountains with bottle fill stations and basketball rims for the gym. The next item they plan to purchase is a 3D printer for the technology class.

Learning to swim!

All 3rd and 4th graders in the district receive two weeks of swim instruction as part of their physical education. Diving is taught to students who are in the higher swim groups. They also receive lessons in swim safety and how to help someone who is struggling in the water. Shown learning to swim backwards in the pool is Autumn Wilson from Pine Trails.

Breakout EDU

Technology class at Dawson Elementary is a chance for students to engage in games that teach teamwork, problem solving, critical thinking, and troubleshooting. According to Technology Teacher Brian Price, BreakoutEDU is one of those games that presents students with challenges to ignite their natural drive to problem-solve. As a review of the Digitigal Citizenship concepts covered in computer class, several groups of students did manage to “Save the Password” in a recent challenge; however, this group of 4th graders pictured above, came Sooooooo CLOSE! Better luck next time, Noah Nabors, Jacob McLean-Evenson, Caleb Simon, and Aiden Letts!!!!!

SLIME!

West Ward 2nd graders Jayden Jordan, Gracey Wilkes, and Hayden Allen from Mrs. Sullivan’s class made SLIME as they explored the concepts of measuring and mixtures.

ART PRIZE 2016 FAMILY FUN NIGHT

TOTAL TREK QUEST TTQ is the boys version of “Girls on The Run”. The program is designed to instill positive self-esteem while teaching basic fitness skills to elementary-aged boys.

The culmination event is a 5K run which all the boys participated in! A big THANK YOU to the volunteer coaches Penelope Muenzer and Jill Vernia from North Ward and Ashley Martin and Jen Miller who coached West Ward’s team.

At Dawson Elementary, many upper elementary classrooms take weekly opportunities to read to lower elementary students. This helps build confidence and fluency for older students, and shows the younger students a love for reading! Allegan Kids Wrestling

This year’s Allegan Kids Wrestling program was a huge success with over 50 athletes in grades K-5 participating in a four-week training designed to develop basic wrestling skills. Ex-Allegan wrestler Ryan Pinnell ran these practices, with the help of wrestlers from the AHS team. The program concluded with an annual tournament. Now these youngsters may move on to participate in Allegan’s Youth Wrestling program (MyWay) where they have the opportunity to train and compete against kids of the same age and weight from around the state. All practices take place at the high school from 6:00-7:30 p.m.

Allegan Youth Baseball Signups Now that winter is slowly approaching, let’s skip to spring and the warmth of the sun and think BASEBALL! Allegan Youth Baseball will begin registration for T-Ball, Rookie, Minor, Major and Pony leagues on the following dates:

January 11, 6-8pm (High School front entrance) January 15, 8:15-11:30am (Field House) January 16, 6-8pm (High School front entrance)

Middle School Sports Update

Girls Basketball (7th/8th) and Wrestling (6th,7th,8th) practices will start on Wednesday, Jan. 4. Student-athletes will need to have a sports physical completed and on file in the High School Office before participating. Practice times will be announced before the holiday break at the Middle School and on the athletic web site.

Allegan Southwest Classic

16 of the top wrestling programs in the State of Michigan will compete in the Southwest Classic on Saturday, Dec. 10.

Wrestling starts at 9:00 am at the High School.

Wolverine Conference Honorees

TIGERS Unite!

L.E. White Middle School students had the opportunity to join a positive impact

club called TIGERS Unite this school year. Over 60 students showed up to the first meeting and more have since joined. TIGERS Unite is a student driven club. All ideas are generated by students, students must problem-solve ways to make their idea come to life, and they are the operators implementing their plans. The club is divided up into six teams: Student Team, Teacher Team, Community Outreach Team, Parent Connection Team, School Enhancement Team, and the Video Production Team. Teams are coached by Mrs. Calvert, Mrs. Baker, Mrs. Ott, and Mr. Weber. TIGERS Unite students have created a Wall of Kindness where students can write positive and inspirational messages, have created challenges for all students and staff to go out of their way to be kind and compliment one another, videos demonstrating how to be kind to one another, and more. Be on the lookout throughout the schools and community for random acts of kindness inspired by our very own L.E. White Middle School students!

Top Notch Bus Inspection!

The Allegan Public Schools Transportation Department was recently awarded a Certificate of Excellence from the Michigan State Police for our most recent bus inspection, with a pass rate of 100%. Superintendent Kevin Harness recognized Transportation Supervisor Darrell Stoughton, along with bus mechanics Gary Ramaker and Dave Edwards at the October Board of Education meeting.
