Alternative High staff members Aaron Rogers and Kyle Shack recently presented “Mindfulness in the Classroom” at Michigan State University. Their commitment to helping students pause and check in with themselves throughout the day is paying big dividends in the classroom and beyond.

. . . the POWER of Education (A message from the superintendent of schools)
Kevin Harness Superintendent
Bigs in Business: Partnering with Perrigo for Student Success Approximately one year ago a group of local community, business, and educational leaders began meeting to discuss ways in which we can improve support for our students as they graduate from high school and move on to further education or directly into the workforce. Even if a student is well prepared academically for the transition, there is often a lack of knowledge and understanding of the opportunities that are available to them here in Allegan and beyond. Our goal is to broaden the students’ perspective and provide the necessary support to enable them to be successful in their chosen field. Members of the new “Allegan Advantage” team include Allegan City Police Chief Rick Hoyer, who was instrumental in initiating the conversation and Steve Ramos, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility for Perrigo, who was quick to join the group and provide incredible momentum and invaluable connections. Educators on the team include Allegan County Area Technical & Education Center Principal Linda Blakenship, former AAESA Economic and Talent Development Director Nora Balgoyen-Williams, and APS staff members Cheryl-Marie Manson, Jim Mallard, Dawn Hoyer, Laura Feffer, Aaron Rogers, and myself. This group has brainstormed several ideas to better prepare students for the educational and work environment after high school. The first initiative officially started last week with a “kick-off” meeting for an exciting new opportunity for our high school students. Students from both Allegan High School and Allegan Alternative High will participate in a program called “Bigs in Business.” Through our partnership with Perrigo and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kalamazoo, ten students have been matched with mentors from Perrigo. Students will have the opportunity to experience new people and new ideas in their mentor’s work environment. Mentors (“Bigs”) will meet with their students (“Littles”) every other week for about an hour. This program will allow students to form and grow relationships with an adult in the business community. Students will learn about possible career options and discover how their classroom education will be applied in the future. The “Bigs in Business” model has experienced great success in the greater Kalamazoo area with numerous partnerships between school districts and local employers. We are looking forward to the connection to our community this program will establish. The goal will be to grow the program in future years to provide the opportunity for a greater number of students. I would like to thank Big Brother Big Sisters CEO Amy Kuchta and their Allegan County Coordinator Allie VanHeest for their efforts in getting the program up and running. Their organization and expertise have been invaluable. This is the first time in my 22 years at Allegan Public Schools that we have formed a partnership with a local business to support our students with a mentoring model that emphasizes business and employment. I am looking forward to the development of the partnership with Perrigo over time, and the possibility to expand the program to other local businesses. The individual relationships developed will have a long-lasting impact on our students and their mentors. The organizational relationships will have a positive impact on our entire community. Thank you Allegan Advantage Team – we have taken a strong first step! Page 3

Back to School Bash The students and staff at AAHS want to give a gigantic THANK YOU to the Knights on Bikes/Knights of Columbus for sponsoring their first Back 2 School Bash. Knights on Bikes supplied food, a live band, and prizes, but most of all they had lots of love and support for our incredible AAHS students. As part of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation Youth Grant program, Allegan Public Schools was recently awarded a $2,000 grant. This grant will support our mission to have all third graders reading at grade level by the end of their 3rd-grade year. Funds will be used to purchase intervention kits for students who have not met reading benchmarks in grades K-3. Community involvement is a key to reading success. Middle School Matters On Va Cuisiner! Let’s Cook! 8th-grade French students put both their French and cooking skills to the test when they made crêpes following a traditional French recipe. They all had great fun in the cooking room and all the crêpes made tasted delicious! Bon apetit! Mme Williams

TIGERS Unite, L.E. White Middle School’s positive impact club, is growing! Currently, over seventy students have signed up to spread positivity and kindness throughout the schools and community. Already this year, students have started decorating lockers with birthday cards, handed out positive notes of encouragement at the homecoming parade, and participated in Dawson Elementary’s “Rock-A-Thon.” You can help support this group by turning in your Village Market receipts to the middle school office. More good things are sure to come!

News from Dawson, North Ward... Fall into Learning with Apples Dawson Kindergarten students have been taking part in fun fall apple activities. They predicted whether they thought their apples would sink or float, made their data into a graph, and then tested their predictions. They were amazed that all the apples floated even though many were very heavy. They also made teeth snacks by adding 10 marshmallow teeth to the lips made from apples. Finding combinations of 10 (teeth on top plus teeth on bottom) is one of their essential standards in math. Of course, they loved eating their teeth snacks after making them. (pictured from Mrs. Norland’s class l: Hannah Chalupa, r: Ella Hilboldt)
Tiger Pride
Schools across the district showed their amazing Tiger Pride during Homecoming week. Activities included daily dress up days, Tiger Olympics, Homecoming Parade, C.O.D.E. Orange “White Out”, and the Homecoming dance. And to top it off, the football team beat Otsego! Go Tigers!
Can you guess who these Pine Trails students are supposed to be? Hint: He’s the tall one in the middle.

Allegan Public Schools offers free daycare for elementary students from 12:53 - 2:53 during the twohour early release. Many families utilize this resource. Below 22 students from Dawson and North Ward had a snack, watched a movie, and played games during the two-hour early release in September. The next two-hour early release is November 15th. Pine Trails and West Ward Change is King!
Students at West Ward and North Ward Elementary Schools can now do their banking at school. With support from Honor Credit Union, West Ward’s “Tiger Treasures Credit Union” ribbon cutting and grand opening occurred October 10th and North Ward’s “Star Student Credit Union” was October 13th. All students are invited to open an account and make deposits. The credit unions are open once every two weeks. Each credit union “employs” about 15 student employees. Lola Modad at West Ward was the very first customer. Every cent counts - “Start Small - Save Big”!

“Imitation is the Sincerest Form of Flattery” According to staff from Howell Public Schools, who are designing an alternative program for their district, “We contacted the State Department of Ed and asked about the best alternative high schools in Michigan. They told us to visit Allegan Alternative.” It was an honor to host eight of their staff during a day of dialogue, classroom visits, and insights from a student panel. Principal Laura Feffer says she is excited to keep in touch this year and looks forward to visiting their alternative program when it breaks ground next Fall.
Like a Good Neighbor... Living right across the street from a school can have its challenges. AAHS has made an intentional effort over the last couple years to teach their students what it means to be a good neighbor. Our neighbors, The Goodwins, have taught us the meaning of being good neighbors. AAHS is grateful for the generous donation to their Eagle’s Nest and are excited to partner with those around them for the good of the students.
