. . . the POWER of Education (A message from the superintendent of schools)
Allegan Public Schools Providing Opportunities for All Learners
Kevin Harness Superintendent
It is hard to believe another year is “in the books.” I have lamented with several staff members lately that every year goes faster than the one before. There is much to celebrate as we close out the 2017-18 school year, some of which you will read about in the pages of this edition of the Our Schools. For this edition, I have decided to share some fun and exciting learning opportunities that Allegan Public Schools provides for our least and most “experienced” learners. Tigers Den Day Care and Pre-School For many years, APS has provided a day care for young learners starting at age 3. Housed at Pine Trails Elementary and staffed by Sara Phillips, Jamie Nagelkirk, and Chandra Morehouse, this program has a proven record of providing outstanding care combined with the first school learning opportunities for our children. Families throughout the district with kindergarten through 5th-grade students can also utilize the program for before and after school childcare. In addition, the legendary Judi McCall runs a preschool program for both three and four-year-old children. Judi has been guiding the learning of our youngest citizens in Allegan for decades. She is truly an early childhood expert with a huge heart for children, as evidenced by the popularity of her program over the years. Many of our families utilize our Tigers Den Preschool Daycare in tandem to achieve flexible program hours to accommodate parents’ work schedules and other responsibilities. Tigers Den Young 5’s Academy Tigers Den Young 5’s Academy will be offered at both Pine Trails Elementary and Dawson Elementary beginning with the 2018-19 school year. Staffed by Sarah Schulz and Kelly Nugent, this program is designed for students who are eligible, or nearly eligible for kindergarten but simply need another year of academic and/ or social growth to be prepared for kindergarten. Slots in all of these programs are limited, so I would advise families with eligible students not to wait until fall for enrollment. Life Long Learners Another opportunity you may not be aware of at APS that extends beyond the traditional K-12 educational setting is our Life Long Learners program for the seniors of Allegan and the surrounding area. This program has also been running for decades and provides a variety of activities for some of our most engaged and active learners. Led by Sally Trabulsi, the group meets weekly during the school year on Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m. at our Administration Building. Numerous guest speakers joined the group over this past year from a variety of organizations including Allegan General Hospital, Grand Valley State University, Allegan City Police Department, Wings of Hope Hospice, Michigan Sea Grant, Allegan District Library, Iron Bridge Quilters, and yours truly from Allegan Public Schools. I always look forward to spending some time with this enthusiastic group of “experienced” learners. Field trips over the past year included the Kalamazoo Nature Center, Christmas shopping at the Rivertown Crossing Mall, and a history lesson at Oakwood Cemetery (pictured above), not to mention lunches at the Allegan County Area Technical and Education Center. Pertinent topics are presented and discussed and the conversation is always enlightening. Snacks, an occasional potluck, and a weekly 50/50 drawing add to the fun. So if you are available on Wednesday afternoons, come join the festivities – there is no age requirement! Enjoy your summer everyone! Page 3

School Bell Award
At this year’s annual End-of-Year Staff Breakfast, retiring West Ward Principal Harry Dalm was awarded the prestigious “School Bell” award. Mr. Dalm is retiring after 40 years as a teacher and principal for Allegan Public Schools. As a graduate of Allegan High School, he returned in 1978 to teach at North Ward Elementary School. Fifteen years later, he became the principal of West Ward Elementary. Over his career, he has influenced thousands of students, including grandchildren of former students. In addition, he has witnessed countless educational trends from “Round Robin” to “Differentiated Instruction.” Mr. Dalm is supportive of any and all educational innovations which his staff deemed as good for the students. He truly believes in “family first” and feels that his staff members are part of his family. As such, it will be difficult to replace this family member of APS. Mr. Dalm will always be our “beacon of light.”
Allegan Online and Adult Education Celebrates Graduates
Allegan Online and Adult Education celebrated the success of their graduates on June 21. This year the Online program had five High School graduates and the Adult Education program had 35 GED graduates. The graduates ranged in ages from 17 - 52. These programs also had a very successful season with their Integrated Education classes. Eight students earned advanced certificates in the Health, Construction, and Manufacturing fields. Many of these graduates were able to enter the work field immediately at higher paying positions with the ability to continue on in their respective fields. Allegan Online/Adult Education is a program of the Allegan Public Schools offering another way for students to finish their High School education and gain additional skills to enter the workforce with skills for sustainable paying careers. If you know of anyone who has quit high school for any reason, this program is another option. It is never too late to complete high school. Classes will resume September 4, 2018 and are held at the Administration Building. Contact (269) 673-5431 for more information.
Thank you, Drozd Family!
If you have been to the Fieldhouse recently, you will notice the addition of two benches outside. Phyllis Drozd and family donated the benches in memory of Tom Drozd, a long-time supporter of APS. Problem Solving
Bringing History to Life
Civil War reenanactor Wally Coots recently brought the Civil War into the 8th-grade social studies classes. He discussed the daily life of soldiers during the Civil War and talked about battles and war tactics. Students also modeled Union uniforms.
7th-grade students in Mrs. Corey’s class researched a topic of concern to them; coming up with viable solutions to help solve the problem. They wrote to politicians, community activists, and business CEOs. Some have received response letters back. They also had a visit from Lynda Stein who is the Community Outreach Coordinator for Wishbone Pet Rescue, Allegan County. She went over many of the concerns the students wrote to her about. It was a great learning experience for the students to see they have the power to get responses to real world issues.
Delicious!
Mrs. Boysen’s Life Skills class learned the art of sushi making during a lesson in cultural foods. Students learned how to make sticky rice, spread the rice on nori, add their fillings, and roll each sushi rolls. Students also learned how to make homemade cherry pies.

Catch and Release
Ms. Eichbauer’s 2nd-hour Ecology class and Ms. Harlan’s 4th-grade class released salmon at the Allegan Dam. The Ecology students helped the 4th-grade students with a lesson on using a dichotomous key to identify fish found in the Great Lakes. Both classes then released the salmon that the Ecology students have been raising at Allegan High School.

At the end of the year, students and mentors are invited to an ice cream social Pictured are Gage Maillette and Mr. Abraham at the Pine Trails Ice Cream Social. Gage doesn’t have far to go until he is as tall as Mr. A! Page 10
Pine Trails and West Ward Elementaries The Dictionary Project
As part of Reading Month, the Rotary Club of Allegan donated dictionaries to all APS 3rdgraders. The Dictionary Project usually takes place during March Reading Month to encourage students to read for pleasure and information. Rotarians Kevin Harness (APS Superintendent) and Dr. David Ohmart, and Dawson Principal Erin Hafer are shown with Dawson 3rd-graders exploring their new dictionaries. The Dawson students loved the dictionaries and even wanted Mr. Harness and Dr. Ohmart’s autographs.
Battle of the Books
North Ward Elementary’s 4th- and 5th-graders experienced their first Battle of the Books during March is Reading Month. Each grade had two months to read six books that were selected by staff. Each class was divided into teams of five or six students. Then every week in March they “battled” the other teams in their class by answering questions about the selected books. Each team earned points for the correct answers. During the final battle, the students battled against their teacher to earn double the points. The winning team from each class won a Donut or Ice Cream celebration. This was a fun and exciting reading experience for North Ward students and staff.
Buddy Bench
Matheson Vernia, a fourth-grader at North Ward, has a giving spirit. Matheson saw a need and filled it. He witnessed the benefits of a “Buddy Bench,” then sold bracelets at craft shows and used the proceeds to purchase the bench for North Ward students to enjoy! Pictured below: Matheson and buddy Kohen Gillies trying out the new bench. Check out the video clip at https://goo.gl/8BTnGW

The AAHS Entrepreneurship Class has created their own business thanks in part to Junior Achievement and three amazing mentors from Perrigo. Their metal stamped jewelry and dog tags were on sale at the Blessing of the Bikes event held at Blessed Sacrament Church on May 12th.
It’s hard to believe AAHS had the final day of “Tony’s Baked Goods”. For four years, Tony has lifted the spirits of our staff and students with his contagious smile and love of life. We are thrilled that he is graduating this year and ready to start a new chapter down South. We love you, Tony!

Five Eagles earned national certifications this spring in the fields of nursing, construction, and production technician. AAHS is thrilled to have an ever-growing number of postsecondary options for their graduates. Congrats to Mason Jilek, Jon Gasaway Dimitri Berry, Maile Tucker, and Amber Caswell (not pictured). Jennifer Hamman has been hired as Allegan Alternative’s Restorative Justice Facilitator thanks to Mediation Services. While it is now the law that all school administrators consider restorative justice prior to punitive punishment, it is a philosophy that AAHS has believed in and have been using aspects of for years. Unlike traditional discipline models which are based on blame and punishment, restorative justice focuses on repairing the harm done to relationships and the school community. Page 12

Peer-to-Peer Mentors
L.E. White’s Learning Center coordinator Jill Scripps loves working in the Learning Center. One of her favorite parts is having amazing junior and senior high school students walk over and help students with their work as part of the mentoring class. These high school students set an excellent example for their younger peers! Even the high school mentors love this experience. Senior Kaleigh Arndt stated, “Mentoring was my chance to help students who needed a little push and to guide them into a better path of life.” In addition, Senior Weston Rife agreed stating, “My favorite part of mentoring was when you’d help a student and they have no clue what they’re doing, but once you explain it and help them through a few problems their face lights pictured: Weston Rife mentoring 7th-grade math students in probability. up, like, oh, I understand this now!” Page 13
College Visits
This spring, the 9th-graders at Allegan High School had the opportunity to visit two college campuses. Students visited both Kalamazoo Valley Community College and Western Michigan University. Students were presented information on the admission procedure, course of study, and degree options. In addition, students toured both campuses so they could see classrooms, libraries, computer labs, fitness centers, and dormitories.

Allegan Robotics Have Excellent Performance at AAESA Lego Robotics Challenge Allegan Elementary teachers Brian Price, Julie Eckwielen, and Geoff Nash worked with 34 fourth and fifth-grade students from West Ward, North Ward, Pine Trails, and Dawson Elementary robotic teams on building and programming robots to complete assigned tasks. These groups met for several months and concluded by participating in the EV3 Lego Robotics Challenge and Coding Showcase sponsored by AAESA on Tuesday, March 27, 2018. Students worked in groups to complete tasks by programming their robot to perform different challenges. Allegan captured first place in both events. Emerson Scripps and Breeze Keaton (pictured right) from West Ward took first place in the “Park Your Bot” challenge. Ellie Bishop, Mya Corbett, and Sam TerAvest from North Ward took first place in the “Stroll Through the Country - Farmer’s Helper” challenge with a perfect score. Page 14

APS Launches New Website
The Allegan Public Schools website has a new look. You can check it out at ALLEGANPS.org. We set out to design a site that is easier to navigate and highlights more of the amazing student learning that takes place in our schools each day. As you browse the new site, we hope you will recognize the following improvements: • Our menus have been simplified to help you quickly locate the resources you need. • We have created calendars that display all school events and athletic events happening in our district. • Each school home page can be accessed by navigating to a much shorter URL. • A greater effort is being made to post more timely district news. • Our athletics pages have moved to this site and will be updated with schedules, rosters, and results. • Our directory is more useful and easier to browse. • As with any big project like this, the work is never done. With that in mind, if you have any thoughts or suggestions, please email them to Rob Patin at rpatin@alleganps.org. We also encourage students to enter our website photo contest. APS students can submit photos that could be chosen to appear on our home page. Winners will also receive a cool Allegan Public Schools sticker. Follow the link on the APS home page
for more information. Happy browsing!
